@Boba Fett This is why I decided to quit my retail job last month, retail is good for maybe a year or 2 but after that just get out, get a good skill and move on. That industry is soul sucking.
At the Wal-Mart I work at its not the customers who are the problem. They are usually surprisingly nice or at least normal. Its the employees and definetly the managers. Not just that but being a sales associate has been boring to the point that I constantly think of suicide while at work.
Secret shoppers are bulls**t. Retail is stressful enough without having to worry about some jabroni watching you and reporting you to management for not doing everything perfectly. One of my favorite things while working retail was catching people trying to cut in line. A lot of them storm off like little 5 year olds when you catch them and say, "I'm sorry, but the line starts right over here."
It's funny... Over time, I started to just get a kind of sixth-sense about secret shoppers. I could almost always pick them out. (There was usually something just *off* about the way they started talking about what they were looking for. They would always sound the way that upper management assumed customers sounded like, not how *actual* customers talked.) Once I learned how to pick them out, I always got some of the highest scores of whatever district I was in. That said, the secret shopper Rich describes is TERRIBLE at doing the job. The entire point of the process is supposed to be to find out how an employee behaves when a customer *isn't* making a scene. I can't imagine why that particular customer forced the issue in that way.
I doubt I can really put it into words; it really was a matter of the hairs on the back of my neck standing on end after talking to them for a few seconds. Have you ever heard about how terrible "a smile that doesn't make it all the way to the eyes" can be? It's that. The insincerity of the whole exchange just stuck out to me. I guess about the closest I could get to a specific example would be something like this: When an actual customer walks into a store looking for a thingamajig, they will typically walk up to the counter and ask something like "Do you have thingamajigs?" or "What thingamajigs do you have?" What an actual shopper would *never* do is hang around the part of the store vaguely in the vicinity of where the thingamajigs are, wait as long as it takes for an employee to approach, and then ask "What can you tell me about thingamajigs?" The questions just don't track with the kinds of things real customers usually want to know about.
@@scroth0303 Worked in retail for a couple of years and after a bit it becomes pretty obvious when they come in to secret shop you. One of the biggest giveaways was they would always act like they knew everything about the item they were looking for, but then you'd ask a couple questions and realize they were actually clueless and didn't act like a normal customer.
Bad customers NEVER affect my day nor my attitude because the reality is that they are the ones with a problem, not me. My happiness does not depend on other's people behavior. I NEVER entertain my mind with my previous customer experiences. As soon as I finish with a customer, my mind goes right back to my loved ones, hobbies or entertainments (positive things and actions). It takes some times to get used to that but remember this and you will get used to it pretty soon.
That sounds great mate, but I'd wager you're an outlier and not the rule. Good on ya though, and yeah that positive thinking does help but you have to have the right kind of mind for that; as a very analytical sort of private person I can definitively say that what you're suggesting would work for about maybe 5 or 10 minutes for me and then it wouldn't. I agree. I’m a “sales associate” for a small chain of hardware stores. My managers are all really nice. I’m close with all of my coworkers and managers and I love DIY building, grilling, fishing, and I’m also a handyman for the properties that my grandmother owns. The store I work at fulfills all of those interests, so I genuinely like working there because I also get to lear a lot. All that being said … customers in the store are really some of the most terrible people with some of the most difficult attitudes to deal with. And many of them are regulars at the store. You would think if you have to interact with someone on a regular basis who is just trying to do their job, and their only job is to help you, you would try to treat them with a little bit of respect
I was a cashier at a specific gas station for a couple of years. I've worked at multiple gas stations but this one I worked at mainly. This guy came in as I was eating my lunch, since I was the only one there they allowed me to eat at the register. I can multitask, it's not hard. So this guy walks in and throws a crumpled up $20 on the counter and without even looking at me he demands gas at whatever pump he's at. There was no retrieval of fuel that day, so we were out of gas. I tell this guy that and he doesn't care. He thanks me and grabs the bill from the counter and leaves and I proceed to eat my lunch. He comes back in a few minutes later saying I stole the cash he put down because he didn't have it. I told him I didn't have it and he called me a liar and told me he would kill me that second if I didn't put a $20 bill in his hand. I got pissed and told him I didn't have his money and that I watched him put it in his pocket as he left. He continued to call me a liar, got my name from my nametag and called my manager over. He ranted and raved about how it was an act of aggression and that I had an attitude (wouldn't you if someone threatened your life?) My manager looked at the footage and it clearly showed me chowing down on my food and him shoving his money into his pocket. So my manager told him what happened. The man STILL proceeded to call HIM a liar and told both of us he was going to file a complaint with corporate and vowed to have both of our jobs. He came back in a few weeks later apologizing and saying he found the bill as soon as he got back to his car. No one gives a damn about retail employees. I guess we're all expendable assets. What backwater community would tolerate such a motley crew of unhinged individuals? I'm surprised any business would be considered successful under the reigns of such a team. John sounds like an excellent movie character.
It all comes down to attitude really. I've had plenty of people flip out because they couldnt see something right in front of their face. Other times someone says something nicely to you and you're only all too happy to gesture or even go get one for them.
Your shoe section story reminds me of when I worked at Macy's. I would work this department called BOPS (Buy Online, Pickup in Store) and we would have to find a specific item people bought online in the store. There was no way to easily find an item if it was in the wrong spot. A dress could be in any of the overstock rooms, dressing rooms or even in the wrong floor or side of the building. When shoes would come up. I would have to go into the shoe backroom. It was over 50 aisles and stacked by color/style of shoe. Not brand or size. And it would take me FOREVER just to find a single pair of shoes.... *I do not miss this job*
The story about the cleaning guy at the gym was hilarious! I did not expect the ending. Thanks for sharing those stories. I’m glad I subscribed to your channel. 👍
Yeah, I worked a service job, and there is good Valhallan energy for those humans who make the effort to respect the employees, especially in stressful situations.
So if one employee doesn't clean other people's fecal matter with their bare hands, you fire them. But if another employee does drugs at work every single day and chases another emplyoee around the store with a blunt instrument intent on physically assaulting them in a quasi sexual manner, every single day, and you get told about it, that is somehow NOT cause for termination. Really great priorities at this store.
Oh, how I can empathize with you Rich! So much so that after I paid off my house and all my debts that I abandoned my full time position and negotiated a part time contracting position at my job to where I no longer fall under the umbrella of corporate bureaucracy, policy and pervasive "BS" that presides over all of my former coworkers. I now fully understand almost twenty years after my dad passed away why he ran his own small business independently, because only he knew how to deal with his clientele and above all had autonomy over his professional services in that he instilled quality with his work in making a genuine, honest living by reputation, rather than lying to people in order to make a daily quota of revenue. My dad was one of the very few who endorsed the philosophy of "quality versus quantity" and now I myself am embracing this mantra as I believe that money is not everything in the short time we're here on Earth. Time and life are the most important factors in my life.
ironically enough, my dad is the same way! Sorry for you losing your dad, though. :c My dad runs a home improvement store and he's the manager, and even though the store got bought out countless times, he always kept his job.

As long as you dont work at taco bell and give people 1 mild and 1 hot after they ask for a lot of fires your fine because that actaully happened
dragonator 101 as a taco bell worker, I can say we do this because some people will take 1000 packets and always end us up shorting other peoples sauces before our next trucks.
dragonator 101 I’ve done that twice on purpose cause they pissed me off
@@lrblazeofficeofmadness297 oh... Well then it must have been a mistake because i was like 8 then and my dads really nice so idk
Aww.. that cleaning guy one was kinda cute and sad at the same time.
I feel sad for the guy in the wig, lol. He didn't want you to go, Rich! Why did you have to doo thaaaaat!?
I always love your stories, Rich! This video reminds me of the time you told us about your stalker...how is Ralph by the way? ;)
We need a Ralph update, STAT
@@zake64 My thoughts exactly! RICH, make it happen! 😂
"Your callsign is...DOGMEAT" - Sewer Shark (Came to mind when you did your impression of John)
John’s character reminds of Trevor from GTA V lol.
What backwater community would tolerate such a motley crew of unhinged individuals?
I'm surprised any business would be considered successful under the reigns of such a team.
John sounds like an excellent movie character.
my condolences to folks who work retail
meme material 5:28 folks ^.^ - can I use that clip in one of my videos?
keep up the good work bud
I missed these types of videos from your channel.
You really never realize how stupid people are until you work retail
"where are the straws"
Literally points to the straws right in front of them
It all comes down to attitude really. I've had plenty of people flip out because they couldnt see something right in front of their face. Other times someone says something nicely to you and you're only all too happy to gesture or even go get one for them.
Or fast food
@@robertfota4109 I've had someone say to me that they were gonna call management and get me fired because we didn't have and dr thunder in stock lol
I think Rich should work as a voice actor
Man I've been in retail for 20 years and kind of want to die.

Hi Justin
You are low-key creeping me out, I see you everywhere man
When did you come back?
Go away get a life
Some of these stories are more scary and fucked up than all of Mr. Nightmares content
i worked retail for 9 months, footlocker made me a lil crazy lol. especially on holiday seasons
Someone animate these stories!
Been working retail for 13 years and the customers nowadays are batshit crazy
Customers never bothered me.
It was my managers and lead supervisor who I couldn't stand.
Bunch of uptight geezers.
What you like to Enlighten us please

It’s both.
Job #1: call police and have psycho john thrown in prison for repeated assault charges. Report the store to the city for health violations.
I wondered why he didn't just call department of labor when he got fired. NY State doesn't play around when it comes to underage workers.
@@Undecided0 probably because he was too young and ignorant of many things.
@@lime6862 That and maybe it's one of those "Times were different" things.
@@alchemistnezumi9780 true
So if one employee doesn't clean other people's fecal matter with their bare hands, you fire them.
But if another employee does drugs at work every single day and chases another emplyoee around the store with a blunt instrument intent on physically assaulting them in a quasi sexual manner, every single day, and you get told about it, that is somehow NOT cause for termination.
Really great priorities at this store.
Hey Dickers, it's Ralph, I haven't heard from you in a while, let's grab a coffee sometime.
My dad runs a home improvement store and he's the manager, and even though the store got bought out countless times, he always kept his job.
Yes, Retail Horror Stories! I had bad experience with working at Radio Shack as a teenager, I had one customer threatened me, almost hurt me, it was scary!
lmao! I love the vids you make like this. This and the legendary story of Ralph will forever be great
I feel like we're going to get a lot of Dickers jokes from now on. Im still shocked how frequently people bring up stalker Ralph in the comments.
Rich, let's talk about this over a coffee...
O.G Rich fans will remembers this; OH yEs!

The Part about the guy not knowing how to say bye to you had me shed a tear a bit! When you're a good or better worker than some of the higher-ups to the point where customers and other people and associates know and acknowledge it, make you feel great! As a person at this point in time that has been working retail for a bit now can say, every day's an adventure. Whether it's good or bad depends on the day and the people around you. If you younger folk haven't worked retail, even if it's part-time take a gig. It thickens the skin for real-world tolerances!
As a long time off an on Subscriber Rish thank you for this video and here's to many more!
The problem is retail is the easiest job to get into.

Haha, love the "Bobo, Stern show" reference! My g/f and I cracked up when you said that.
You know after being on basically a youtube binge of retail horror stories I realized my 2 years in retail weren't really that bad by comparison. Sure I was an idiot magnet with people asking me things like "when's the tuesday sale" or "where are the socks" (while looking directly at them) but I haven't had much crazies.

Your Retail Horror Stories are Classic! When you were telling the story about having a talk with " Peter " I actually felt like I was in trouble.
That sounds so awful, I'm sorry you had to go through all that, especially with that John guy. I hate that people have to suffer like this just to make a living, so sad.
