I totally agree with you on the zero waste patterns. I've thought a lot of those "appendages" that they add here and there in seemingly random places are truly a waste of fabric. There is so much that can be done with scraps so they aren't wasted. I would get them caught on everything and have a torn garment. Your dress looks gorgeous though. It's the only zero waste pattern I've seen yet that I actually liked. There are patterns out there, even free ones, that have you print off the bodice and give you the dimensions for the skirt if it is made of rectangles, or even the whole thing if it is boxy, and to me, that is truly zero waste when neither fabric nor paper and ink is wasted. The ink on a printer disappears astonishingly fast, and is really expensive to replace.

Thanks for watching, Linda! It was definitely an interesting foray into the world of zero waste patterns. I'm big into pattern tetris and scrap busting projects, so I think I'll stick to that as a way to reduce waste in the future!!

Wow great that you made two dresses for the challenge. My favourite is the Bardon Dress, the fabric is beautiful.

Lovely makes. I must admit, the Bardon is my favourite. I have a very wary attitude towards zero waste for the very reasons you spoke of, but it is a fun result.

Thanks, Jacquie! I agree and will probably not bother with zero waste patterns in the future, but it was a fun one to try, nonetheless!

I've had the same thoughts as you about a zero waste project, you just end up wearing the extra instead of having scraps to use for other things. I try to avoid directional patterns as they're inherently more wasteful and just try to make used of every bit of fabric I buy. But it's a great dress, such a good match of fabric to pattern and love the first one too

Thank you so much, Sarah! It's good to try things out so that you can learn what you like, but I think I've officially confirmed my suspicions about zero waste patterns!

    Nice dresses!
I totally subscribe to all your comments about the "zero waste" dress. But I think it also illustrates so well all the dilemma we are encountering with producing less pollution , taking it out here only to encounter it there. Nice interesting dress though, very70s, flowers and love!

Thank you, Jacqueline! I think you're absolutely right. It's not realistic to over simplify our impact on the environment and assume if we change one small thing, the problem is solved. These things are unfortunately much more complex! Thanks for stopping by and sharing your thoughts!

That is actually one of the reasons I haven't attempted a zero waste pattern is because I feel like it just shifts the 'wasted' fabric into the garment itself. That seems like something I'd be less likely to wear too so perhaps even more wasteful as it sits in my closet unused. I much prefer to play pattern tetris and piece a couple scraps together to make facings if needed. I even been known to piece together some jersey to get a t shirt out of just under a yard of fabric. Scraps that are big enough get used, small scraps get cut up to stuff the odd pillow or pin cushion. Much less wasteful to my mind.

It's interesting, isn't it? I hadn't bothered with zero waste patterns before, and I don't think I will again. I agree, I love a bit of pattern tetris. It's so satisfying to squeeze a garment out of not very much. Still glad to have given it a go, though!

Your dresses turned out really cute!! There’s really nice shaping on the zero waste dress. Too bad it didn’t just come with instructions but good that you can re-use the paper:) I recently bought a different zero-waste Envelope dress pattern (instructions only) but after my first attempt I’m definitely adding some shaping. I like the concept but if it’s not me I’m not going to wear it. Glad I stumbled across your channel 😄

Thank you so much for watching, Rikki! I agree, a lot of zero waste dresses are pretty oversized/loose fitted, which isn't really my style, either. I hope you manage to make your zero waste dress more "you"!

Both are amazing!! I forgot the pink one had the little people 😍 the waist tie was a great idea! I don't wear long dresses I'm thinking of this now 😉
And the zero waist dress❤😍 love it! Wow that's alot of paper!😳 maybe put a binding on the neck? Like how potholders have? I'm not experienced with woven! So idk if that would help? It's still really pretty and the fabric is amazing❤ yes 70s vibe 😍

Thanks, April! I agree-I think bias binding is the answer for the neckline on the zero waste dress. I really loved both of these fabrics and am so happy that I found great uses for them both!

The bardon dress turned out to be gorgeous! Yes, I feel the side straps make the dress look better, on.
The zero wast dress is lovely but with 72 pages, I would not have made it. I did make some of these in the 70s and I loved wearing them. However they were made with a piece of fabric, the length you wanted, with a hole cut in for the neck, which was finished with bias binding. They had side seams and some had the wast ties. But they did not have sewing for the arms. They were often made full-length, but fabric was less expensive in those days.
Oops, don't rant! Regards Christine 🙋‍♀️🇦🇺👍🏻😍😊🤗😉

No, I loved hearing about those dresses from the 70's!! I absolutely love 70's style, and this makes my dress feel a little more authentic 70's!
I agree, 72 pages was tooo much. I probably should have just used my noggin and worked it out without killing a tree in the process! 😳😉 And bias binding for the neckline would have worked a lot better. I love hearing your thoughts, Christine-keep them coming!

your zero-waste dress is so interesting. it reminds me of a 60s flower child (in a good way). the wasted paper thing would drive me nuts though. i thought zero-waste patterns typically just give dimensions and have you draw them out on the fabric. i've never heard of a printed pdf for that type of garment before.

Hey glad to see your channel! I just subscribed. I’m not good at the zero waste concept in sewing but care about it a lot in everyday life etc. I think there is a pattern very similar to this one you used that is simply instructional. I’m not sure if you are familiar but maybe out it out there. This was so hypocritical of schnitzel to even call it zero waste. I’m annoyed right now and it isn’t a huge deal, but I annoyed because you went into it in earnest and in a conscientious way. That sucks, I feel like writing to them.you are a very talented person and I look forward to seeing more content from you! Thanks for sharing and I’ll see you soon. I’m stating a channel one if these days, I was meant to a while ago but have life business to handle. I will let you know when I finally get it together because I’m going to do a giveaway and I’d also like to see what you think ok? Take care. Oh I saw a girl named Cassie I think that is really switched on in the zero waste sewing realm, it’s fun to see how she approaches it. When I find her I’ll pop a note here if you want me to, ok?

Thank you so much for your comment! I have since learned that there are a lot of zero waste patterns that don't ask you to print out a single page and just use a ruler to work out your pattern pieces. I'm not too upset about this one-I've learned my lesson, at least! I'd love to check out your channel when you get it up and running. Good luck with it, and keep me posted!

You're probably right, there. If it bugs me too much, I'll swap it out for bias binding, but then it defeats the purpose of zero waste, etc. But yeah, if you're not looking for it, I don't think you'd notice!

For the "zero waste" dress, wouldn't be easier to just say to cut on the fold? That eliminates half the pattern pages right there.

💯!!! It's so unnecessary! If I'd been able to work out what the pattern pieces were doing, I could have worked that out myself, but it was so hard to see what you had until it was printed and pieced together. Still, nothing ventured nothing gained! 🤷‍♀️
