- Around the city of Melbourne, you may notice that the bins have solar panels on top. Why does a bin need power? Are smart bins a thing? Here’s why. #shorts

Imagine dropping your phone and shoving your hand inside to retrieve it and then hearing compaction mechanism start.
@@lockhrt999 I would imagine they’d have engineered the bin not to turn someone’s hand into a very nice rectangular prism but I’m not seeing an E-stop (a button to stop the machine from operating) so your phone probably isn’t safe if you somehow hit a dude perfect truck shot and sink that bad boy in a garbage bin
Imagine having butter fingers
@@SauceChef imagine dropping a phone, when its basically all you do all day.
That's amazing.
Never anticipated being jealous of another city's bins
Melbourne: Come for the Coffee, Stay for the Bins.
then go check out amstredams underground bins :/
Saw one in Taranaki NZ
Americaner here... Jealous of another *country's* bins.
@@christopheroliver148 Melbourne is a city. Whether you're from America or Mars! It's still a city. The best city in the world, actually 😁
We also have these in Portland. During our heat wave when it was 116f, they lit on fire. That heat was ridiculous.
Wait really?? How didn’t I hear about that?
@@mkay2925 800+ people also died across the PNW during that heat wave. Unless something crazy happens in the next 15 days or so, it was the deadliest natural disaster in the world for 2021.
Oregon or Maine? Cause I’m in Portland Oregon. And I had no idea. Ig I haven’t left the house much
Was that with or without the help of antifa arson
In defense of the designers, they absolutly weren't expecting 116f in Portland. And honestly who could blame them.
When the “Internet of Things” was being hyped years ago they were talking about internet connected fridges where your fridge detects what’s low and orders it, or your sprinkler system is online connected so you can water your garden whenever you want. However I never thought we’d see IoT public bin!
“Sir my cat got stuck in your trash can, can you help get him out?”
“Well ma’am,”
*VRRRRRRRRRMMMMMM*
Also Bin: *This trash taste kinda funny boss-*
I hope the cat still has its other lives left because that is one hell of a way to go
@@motifity3416 the cat might, but not the raccoons lol
Oh no and birds can get caught too :(
Yeah, that's my main concern. Some people even throw pets in the trash because they're trashy people.
I know that there's been an issue with these bins where paper maccas bags get caught in the entrance. A team of people are hired to ride e bikes around the city all day to make sure they're not clogged.
What’s your job? Well…
@@JulianOShea yeah haha. I'm pretty sure it's part of a program to get young people off the streets and give them a job.
@@JulianOShea their job is to keep the streets clean basically. A pretty good job if you ask me
More jobs lol
Ah an Australian classic a job getting made because something got stuck
everytime i see those blue things on poles i go: “that’s for fire hydrants” loi
I LOVE this idea. My only question is does the reduction in bins mean more littering?
That’s what I was thinking. Sure, looks better to have less bins, but after 10 minutes of looking for a bin there’s definitely people out there who’d just go ahead and litter at that point.
@@ExcludedShadow fr
@@ExcludedShadow Yeah, in Finnish cities we have a lot of small, dark green bins. You don't really notice them unless you are looking for them. You don't have to walk far in a city center to find them, and even in suburbs you will find them in every bus stop and front of grocery stores.
They do have to be emptied more often, but since they are the size of a normal trash bag it can be done on foot rather than a huge truck.
Yes. Though Philly was horrible for littering anyway but these definitely made it worse.
No.
I had no idea about these, I should go into the city more to appreciate them.
Bin day trip!
I kneel and pray by the bins to worship them
Bin tourism
What are we ibises now?
Same.
They put one at the park near my home (Northern California) when it was built in 2012. It lasted a few years before it failed mechanically and was vandalized periodically. It was replaced with a normal bin because the cost to repair outweighed the cost of picking a regular bin up more frequently.
where i live aside from normal bins, in moderately active areas the bins are smaller but with underground deposits and in very active areas like coastal area of the city which has a lot of tourists we have smart bins (work similar to those) which have been working just fine for ages

Australians are pretty smart. It's nice to see a city where the majority of residents are actually invested in keeping the city clean.
That definitely isn't Melbourne, most of them don't even care about recycling, it is just too much effort for them
We've had these in the UK for menu years now, am over the country aswell, even in the most rural locations
We've had those same bins in Nottingham. After a few years they required so much maintenance so regularly that they weren't actually saving that much. Eventually they just started collecting more regularly again and stopped the extra upkeep of the bins...
We have dozens around here in Philly, they work so great that the city has been installing more and more. They're wonderful systems and I have quite literally never seen one broken outside of one time recently when one got run over, and actually sort of acted like a bollard reducing damage to the house.
@@tealmer3528 Give it time. All tech fails to the point where it becomes more costly than it's worth, and filling the landfills with endless tech garbage, just like computers.
@@dragons_red We installed most of those bins about 15 years ago.
Yeah, as is the norm with things in Australia, they waste our tax dollars on some new nifty system that's supposed to be modern but by the time it's rolled out it's so hilariously broken and out of date it's useless.
I came here to say this, have seen them for many years in Nottingham but had no idea why they had solar panels.
Worst sandwich press ever.
I did a case study on Bigbelly Solar back in business school.. so awesome to see them have a worldwide impact!
In my city we have talking bins. Kids love it, and I have seen many of them ask their parents if they can throw the trash out.
Awesome videos! They remind me a lot of Tom Scott's videos on YT. So much I never knew about my own city!
Glad you like them! Tom Scott makes such great stuff.
@@JulianOShea your videos are amazing man. I have already watched all of them within 2 days. Such good quality and great voiceover and passion you show. I never thought i would fall in love with Melbournes designs but here we are.
Poor guys who risk their arm while looking for food.
I remember seeing these at Scenic world in the Blue Mountains. Someone there told me how nasty it was whenever small animals would crawl into the bin and get squashed by the compactor :(
considering the amount of possum poo around the bins at my high school I can see how that would be a problem
I guess Darwin awards for the Animal kingdom as well then.

@@LordZonaxe but they are just trying to get a meal in a world that's constantly destroying their habitat and the ecosystem.
The problem with some of these is they where put in shady areas so they always overfill and don't work. There used to be some at Southern Cross station at one point but they replaced them now.
These are everywhere in savanna GA. They are amazing because the city also makes sure you never see them being umptied until very early mornings when almost nobody is around
We have them in Cambridge, UK and I've been wondering what the solar panels are for! Thankyou for explaining ☺️
They're all over the UK - the ones near me are even the same design and company, bigbelly, as the ones I Melbourne!
"What the solar panels are for"
How subtly do British complain about their weather patterns sometimes...
Joke.
Joke.
I believe in the UK the solar panels are merely a status symbol
I have actually helped develop a similar system for the bins here in the Netherlands! Fun fact, we ran them on Raspberry Pi's!
Almere even has a big stationed vacuum to suck trash out through pipes underground ✌🏻
On what now?
@@JennifuhhGilardi Raspberry pi's are credit card sized mini computers that are also fairly cheap! They're great for alot of things ranging from hobby projects to enterprise wide implementations into things like automated coffee machines, terminal screens at stations and thus also smart garbage bins!
Raspberry pis are an outdated computer with severe bugs and issues. Me step-dad had to work on atms and the most common thing broken in those atms were the Raspberry pis
@@TobyLechtenberger I wouldn't suggest using pi's for security sensitive applications. And yes they break too in "always on" applications, most often the micro SD's.
I do remember, my sis was responsible for coding... This was she working with team on bin... Notification part, it's was smart City related work
Nice! We have BigBelly bins in Norway too. I had no idea why they were solar powered. Thanks for explaining.^^
It's been a long time since I've been to the city. So much has changed.
That is actually great design, an awesome example how progression in technology can improve even the simplest things like a trashbin
They are crap, only works for a few years then cost of repair outweighs cost of more bins and more frequent pick ups
New York desperately needs more of these
We have those too here in Finland, and I couldn't be happier how they chance the street outlook.
Had these for years in the Neighborhood I work in the USA, right outside Washington DC. They smell absolutely horrible in the summer.
I was expecting to hear "you can charge your phone here"
Me: "oh there's a rubbish bin. Do I need to charge my phone?"
That's a great idea! Usually these bins are broken and still overflowing, so having the option to charge phones is a great backup 😂
imagine being a raccoon thinking you found a gold mine 🥺
Never thought a bin would become smarter than me.
Should do a video on the new High Capacity Trains, been wanting to ride it
That’s a fun idea.
Great storytelling as always.
Thanks, mate. Appreciate it.
Sydney has actually implemented these as well in major areas, pretty cool
In practice though, we need more bins. There are some that are always overflowing with litter on the street because people won't walk up the block for the next one.
I love your videos, gives me a greater appreciation of Melbourne.
I really love the idea! Tho I doubt the solar panels them selfs do very little if anything at all. The middle of a street, between buildings, close to a tree, laying flat under a non flat (rather dirty) cover. The only way to make it worse would be to put it low enough for people to sit/walk on. Why don't we put the solar panels on the roofs of buildings in cities? Still nonsense, but at least they could theoretically operate at a noticeable level.
Yeah, that was my thoughts too, wondering if they're actually plugged into mains power underneath?
I assumed the solar panel just needs to power the sensor and send a signal, it's not an electric compactor. The solar panel on a calculator can operate on only indoor lights because it doesn't need to put out much power, this is similar running a cable 10 storeys up a building wouldn't be worth it. Plenty of buildings and homes have put solar panels on their roof to save some money on their bills (and also reduce the reliance on coal/gas power) but they are using it to power the building itself not the bins outside.
I live in Melbourne. I did NOT know this. Thank you.
A network of "good inventions for better cities" should follow.
While these are a neat concept, according to my father who works for his local council and was around during the initial run of these being installed, they just don't work well, they can compact some stuff, but the crushing power just isn't very strong at all and is very much like one of those sillicon valley startups with a cool idea in concept only
Early stage of real life Wall•E 😂
can start moving itself anytime though
Alot has changed since I left Melbourne
Miss it so much

Some UA-cam creators would turn this into a 10 minute video to increase their revenue. You, on the other hand, do a perfect one minute video that covers it all. I salute you.
That's great! 👍
London needs this system.
Ohhhhh how i miss going back to melbourne after 21 years since my last 2 years of stay.😥😥
Things have changed alot and i missed my Flinders Street, the monthly, yearly card for the train, the Melbourne central, the suburbs such as BoxHill, Camberwell, Glen ..... etc.
World of Drama.~
We had those in school in NC. Sweet.
I absolutely love smart city building. We can have clean safe intelligently designed cities where people thrive. It is in inevitability so long as we work together towards a common goal.
You can keep your bins and we'll keep our guns! lol
These kind of bins should be in every big city!
We have these in Nottingham, UK too! Great idea compared to traditional rubbish bins
Have you thought to do video on the vast underground system that goes around the city from the shrine/library/hospital and more?
We have solar compacter trash/recycling bins here in Boston, MA. too!
New Orleans of the US needs these.. like yesterday!
Instead of making the wifi faster than 1.5mb, they make Bluetooth bins.
Some trash cans called big belly solar powered compactors exist in other places, I’ve seen them everywhere, it’s pretty neat.
That’s amazing. More cities need to adopt this idea.
I'm getting old, all this technology just blows my mind!
Holy shit NYC needs these
Every so often, I come across something on social media that makes me unexpectedly happy. This is one of those 😎
Still doesn't help with the litter problem. People piss and throw trash everywhere in Melbourne. It's almost as bad as Sydney.
Not to mention that it improves the city’s overall visual appeal
My country needs this!
We need this EVERYWHERE
Melbourne looks really nice
"What's that Lassie?! Timmy got stuck in the trash can?!"
there are a bunch of these in boston and cambridge too! really cool
Yeah we have these in the Netherlands too! Really cool bins👍
*I ALWAYS APPRECIATE A GOOD SCOTIABANK REFERENCE*
They have these in Kingston as well
These kinds of bins are all over the Netherlands, just without the solar panels. I really like them.
New York severely needs this
They have these too in my city, and I live in New Jersey, USA. Ever since I learned about these I have loved the idea. Good to see other places have them too.
We have smart bins in Oslo too :)
They tested them out in the town in live in, was nice to not see overflowing bins being picked out by the ravens and possums.
They also are now using them in some rural locations in Victoria. I have seen a pair in the town of Derrinallum. (Yep, it's a real place.)
Come to Sydney and do some content on that city please. It would be super interesting 🙂
Will do!
This is also available in Expo which is pretty cool
Port Jefferson New York had had these for a long time. Surprised I don’t see them more.
"I enjoy videos about bins" perfect tinder bio
I've seen some in Assen as well in the Netherlands
Hillsboro, Oregon has had some of these in the downtown area for years
The whole Melbourne city is just one gigantic bin. Useless council, these bins are smarter the councillors
NYC definitely needs these, lol.
Such a nice clean city.
I wish london could have something like this. But it's nearly always overcast so that wouldn't work and it's not windy enough to be wind powered.
Ive seen these in montreal for 10 years already
This is why simple solutions are the best with today's technology. This is just brilliant
The City of Brampton has them as well and Toronto and Mississauga are following suit.
3am would be an unfortunate time for these bins
From America here but Australians never cease to amaze me with their adaptability Innovative bastards Hope to see Australia someday On a vacation or something
I live around here and never new that there was solar and panels
Me as Japanese,
“Why there are trash bins on the streets?”
We have a few of these in a marina town near where I live in New York.
Love the idea, they just need to have the exterior cleaned every once in awhile. Get pretty crusty.
Man we need these near my apartments, honestly might save a lot of money. Honestly might deter dumpster divers.
New York did it first. But I do have a question does the recycle ones compress all the glass, plastic and cardboard into one soggy sharp shard cube?
I think Needham MA or Boston did, seeing as that is where they were designed.
Realistically, I wonder if these are tied into the power grid. Those panels are small, and in a city where there not really any direct sunlight they aren't generating very much energy at all.
My city of Bath, UK also has these but I literally never realised what they were until this video
