Greetings from Northern Ireland Mick
I spent an enjoyable evening sorting out my Grandfathers Suffolk Colt , it hadn't cut a blade of grass since the summer of 1974, and it's now running! It's hard to believe that my son put his phone down and joined me in the garage!!!! He wants to strip it down and go for a full on restoration to mow the lawn and he's never said that before👍👍👍👍.His plan is to sit down tomorrow night and order all the necessary parts to "leave it like new". I thought he was going to have a quick look and go back to his phone again!!!!!
Fantastic... All I will say is enjoy it.. and I hope the small engine repairs stick.. it's a great way to educate and have fun at the same time.. let me know how it goes..
@@themowerman Hello Mick we are gradually working our way through things. At the moment we are using a modern spark plug cover because we can't get an original suppressor to fit the lead as it's too large to screw in. The original has disintegrated with age,at the moment we switch the fuel off and let the carb empty.
This was exactly what i needed in researching how to get my non running machine going. Legend
happy days mick got the old girl working
EIFION DAVIES she’s a runner mate. So pleased
Takes me bk this old mower mick
Well done Riley boy and mick 👍
Ta very much. Think I have another one in one of the sheds somewhere
Fantastic video , I did exect the same today without seeing this video , I have bought a Suffolk mower and it did not run , cleaned everything , and now it runs again , i still have to do a few things , the clutch already is engaged , it could be stuck during the no use for years. I also want to know the year it is build , the difference i can see is on my machine the starter is plastic and it has a cover over the shaft and clutch .
These machines have to be saved for the future , it is evidence of the building of things that last forever .
I enjoy restorting old mowers but as a rule I buy running mowers but this time I bought a none runner then found your vid on the same mower, great. This has helped me a lot so cheers.
neil farnall yo how you doing. So pleased you found my channel. More to come on this mower. Thanks for the comment
Great video Mick there is not much beats you as a child all the toys my parents bought me I would always take them apart to see how they work 👍👍
Alan Dykes lol I was the same lol my old man was always telling me off for using his tools and taking stuff apart lol
Hi Mick, great video, have just bought a punch mower with the same carby, so really going to help me , it is a runner but it’s a bit lumpy many thanks.
Just brought a colt lawn mower to restore this video has help so much.
Keep up the good work. Hi five to your little man So willing to help you.
Fantastic if you email me some before and add after photos I will show them on my weekly live stream
Hi Mick, I bought the same mower about 2 years ago as its what my Dad used to mow the lawn with. You're right, they are mowers to be treasured and with abit of care and attention it fires up perfectly. This video is the best I have seen on how to give it the love deserved. Thanks.
Your little lads adorable mate and top video lots of information keep it up mate 👍🏻
Ta mate
Sweet old mower
Hi Mick and Rileyboy I would just like to say a big thanks for the video you have gave me so many memories back when I was young lad using one of these Suffolk lawnmower
peter hodge well that comment makes me happy. Glad you enjoyed the video. More to come on this mower
Now Mick, I had today off as holiday and was not planning on watching any videos today. Your video of this Suffolk, I had to watch 3 times lol. I am more of a cylinder and vintage mower person myself, as worked as a Garden machinery mechanic in the 80's and cylinder mowers was the best sellers in those days. So many great memories seeing this one. Great video as always and would welcome more cylinder mower videos. Hello Riley boy.
bedfordpump lol 3 times. It’s going back on the table for more work so will be with me for a while yet.
@@themowerman Sat here waiting. lol
@@bedfordpump lol
im hitting the play all on your videos all afternoon
Cheryl Hotaling your a sweetheart thanks
Really enjoy your channel! Absolutely wonderful how you restore these old lawnmowers. These lawnmowers were made to last. The modern ones are just the rotary type, poor grass cut, and cheap steel and plastic.
Martin, keep up your excellent work!
Ta mate I appreciate the comment
Really cool old machine awesome bud good to see your son back at there with you. To cool teach them young I need to get my hands on some old machine's like that. Thanks for sharing this ❤️
Tampa Boys Customs ta mate for the comment. It’s a nice old engine hay
@@themowerman it's ok bud I understand it's a good one for sure.
Great video I enjoy the old stuff geting back runing in good hands
Bama MUDMOWER more time come on this one. The drive is stuck. Hope your good mate
Oh yeah, that's an old reel mower, and the engine is in excellent shape. Works great on golf courses. Great job, clean and shine it as it exists, Mick. You'll keep the antique value.
999thenewman yeah That’s my thoughts. It’s a nice running mower hay
What an awesome little machine. If it was me i would redo it myself, but ive not seen any on my side of the pond. Good time as always my friend have a great day!
max l I will post it over lol I may restore it yet
Great video - I just picked up a job lot - 2 suffolk punches and 1 colt. The punches need work but the colt just needed a blade sharpen. This video will come in handy! Subscribed and will check out your other vids 😀 👍🏻
Glad it helped
great video Mick just picked up the same not been started for 20 years front wooden rollers are gone (rotted away) so i will need to find some engine is seized but oil is going to sit in the bore for a week Mate
Great video, Mick. Not many videos out there showing this detail. It is going to help a lot of people out - including me.
Adrian Steventon well thanks for the comment. It’s coming back as I have to look at the drive. So more videos to come. Enjoy
i remember these in 1964. when i was a child. nearly everyone had one or an atco.
Yeah. And there is still a lot around.im currently doing a Ransomes marquis they too are a fantastic mower
Hi Riley and Mick. Watching it now. #smallenginenation 2 That looks really old. bye Riley for now. Sounds good great job Mick. omg that things really took off lol. awesome mail too.
Kathy Durbin yeah it’s a runner
Great fix. I was hoping it would run. 🍻
dirtriderkx500 me too. It runs like an old train hay. I love the sound.
I love restoring old mowers, I have quite a few riders from the early 60's in various stages of repair. As of right now, I don't have a good painting setup, So i really can't do it properly. So i let them go as running machines, In hopes that someone will restore the paint as well. Good job on this Mick!
Dan Lester hi mate I have put it up for sale so hopefully someone will restore it
Cool ! Haven’t seen or heard of these engines before ( in Canada ) . Thanks !
Andrew Woodward hi bud. Well thanks for popping over to my channel. More videos on this and other stuff so keep an eye out.
Great that you got it going Mick.Say hi to Riley for me.
Barbara widdowson will do. Hope your good
A great video Mick. Brilliant mowers, strong, sturdy built to last. I will have a gander at your wish list and see what I can do. Take it easy fella 👍🏼
Your a star mate thanks
Wow I agree I did a few of these when I was little I’d get them and tech myself, it would make great content to see someone actually restore one as I don’t think anyone has recorded one yet. That drive is working, that’s this they used to work until the late 50s or so you just adjust the throttle to disengage the drive and there is a little clutch lever to completely disingenuous the drive so the blades spin without
Jacob Bates yeah mate I need to have it back in the table as the drive stick will not roll free. More to come.
Alsway look forward to these MICK good learning tool awsome
bradley hatchen hay mate your very welcome.
Interesting video mick thanks for the time and effort you put in doing these videos. 50 years ago my dad had a similar mower, I can’t remember if it was an Atco or a Suffolk punch but I do remember it had a kick start pedal as well as a pull start. Also had a long flat metal lever that went from the handle bar to the clutch and all you did was move the lever sideways to engage the clutch drive. It was spring loaded so when you release the lever the drive stopped.
nigel burton sounds like a punch. Glad you enjoyed the video. It’s going back on the table for a drive problem so keep an eye out for it.
Great fix don't see many mowers like that anymore cracking engine sound great for a old machine might be better to sell on for some one else restore it have a great weekend
UK scrapper yeah that’s the plan. Sell it on for someone to do. Thanks for popping over
Good to see it running Mick. I’ve just bought a new to me Suffolk Punch with a Kawasaki engine, it’s like new and only £85 locally on eBay. Sell the super on, the restoration will only be for enjoyment and not profit.
Yeah mate its sold however I have just been given another lol got it for free. Nit been run for 4 years
that will make good mower mick . love the music aswell it put a smile om me all the best to you and riley.
Brad Hoult hi hope your good. Yeah I’m adding stuff all the time to make it more interesting.
It really does have a lovely sound. Also amazon and its package never cease to suprises me with there crazy packaging 😂
Scotti Godwin Vlogs yeah I know always get a small package in a massive box lol
looks like that was supplied by Old Forge Engineering of Ingatestone! My dad had one of these but it was an earlier version it had a side exhaust with a proper small silencer on it and no recoil starter, just a trumpet that you used to wind a starter cord around with a wooden ball at each end. I would love to find another.
We'll keep looking they are out there
I was so happy you got it to fire. It runs great Mick. It reminds me of my old tiller. (older though)
Bruce Pender it’s a nice old girl. And runs sweet. Got to sort the drive out soon.
Nice to see that running. I re built an atco 24" sit on mower on it was a good time when I got it running and now I ride round the garden on it. (Lawn isn't big enough to cut the grass but it's fun lol).
Chris Hale still fun hay.
Great Tunes ,,Mate !
clide kiddlehopper ta very much I’m trying to make it more interesting
That was a quick 45 minutes lol 👍
HI . I WORK ON OLD MOWERS LIKE THIS . I HAVE DONE VIDEO,S ON OLD VINTAGE MOWERS LIKE THIS TOO .
Cheers mate , I have the Suffolk punch standard and needed the carb info , much appreciated .
OFP2 hay your welcome and glad my video may of helped.
You got it going 👍🏻
MCEngineeringInc yeah it’s a runner
Great vid mate and the old girl is purring like a kitten
jayjays motors mowers and machines yeah mate no sick kittens here lol
I believe it is a 1960 model, my dad had one., if you pull the large roller away from the smaller one it should disengage the rear roller drive.
Yes your correct
They look good powder coated Mick with zink plated fasteners.
Vielen Dank für das Video, bin gerade dabei einen 98G14 zu restaurieren. Das Video hilft mir sehr ! !

Mick, I’ve got an old 17” Suffolk Punch, Engine type 98G14 Model number 2A
How do I find how old it is. Did you find out please, it’s like this one
Good work Mick. If I remember correctly the dipstick comes out without removing the filler cap though. Certainly does on my Petter engines with that arrangement.
Benedict White I will have a look thanks for the tip.
It would be sweet to watch Martin work his magic on the old girl now that you've got her running so well. Just a thought....
Ohio Hillbilly yeah I know. I have some more work to do on it so it will be coming back.
cool little video give it a service and ask if they'll send updates on the mower restore
Donald Dooley yeah that is what I was thinking.
Just got one in , same fires but cuts out. So after watching this the sonic cleaners coming out. ill let you know how it ends up. Cheers for the vid.

Good to see it running mick. I you may remember, I had a Colt and a Punch.
I managed to get the colt to run, but the restored Punch wouldn't start. I have now scrapped the Colt as it was too rusty and have swapped the engines. The Punch won't run now even with the good engine.
I will have a look when the weather improves.
Well done once again.

Diecast Powder Coat and Restoration shame mate. I’m sure you will sort something they should run with a little TLC
I used to repair these 4 a living do not remove pull cord 1st just remove full tank then the cowling with the recoil pull cord attached then you will have access 2 the points clean rebuild happy days
Yeah I understand.. however some people are doing this as a hobby.. and that way it shows all aspects.. but I appreciate your comments
Awesome video Mick she runs great i would let someone else restore it
AJP Garden Machines don’t know yet mate. We Will see
I have restored a few of these mick, they don’t have dates of manufacture on them.. looking at the carb and muffler I’d say this is early to mid 70’s
Btw the dipstick pulls out you don’t have to unscrew the cap to check it 😉
Ta mate.. I have another one to do plus two more Ransomes Marquis.. they will be winter projects.. hope all is well
@@themowerman all good bud, now about to start a Suffolk resto myself 👍

Mick glad to see your son in the video, i help my son with his Eliminator Performance Small Engine Repair business in Canada and we would like to see if we can contribute to your son getting a set of drums. Gladly start your sons drum set fund out with a $10 Cdn. donation if you contact us with some information about how we can send it. Maybe your subscribers read this and also want to make a contribution to a drum set purchase. Always important to make someones dreams come true.
Wayne Stefinashen it’s a great idea. Think we are getting him a set for his birthday in April anyway. But many thanks for the offer. Ta for watching and hope you enjoyed the video
Hi Mick, just watched the video, the best I have seen.... I have a Suffolk Punch that leaks fuel when turned on, it starts for a short period then stops and won't start again. The gasket at the top of the bowl on the carb looks knackered, could this be the issue as no vacuum for fuel? Got a replacement gasket coming.
Did Riley get his drum kit?
@@richardburnell2978 It will be a sticking or upside down float causing the carb to overflow and the engine to flood. Make sure that the float is in good condition with straight spindles, and that the longer more pointed spindle is at the top. Take extra care when assembling the carb to ensure the spindle goes into the center of the brass fitting in the top of the carb.
Engine runs good mick, say hi to riley boy. take care!
wild bill will do bill. Thanks for popping over
The British mowers the scare the crap out of me are the hover ones.... Lol
Lol why?
@@themowerman I can see someone mowing a hill with it, and slipping and the leg going under the mower.... Yikes.... But I have seen them in person here in the states, and they cut wonderfully, and if you use them on level ground they are fine, but on hilly terrain I'd be apprehensive for sure.
@@knighthawk86855 you can get them with back wheels too to help with the hills

Good morning Mick. From South Africa. Where would I be able to find replacement parts for my Dual Drive Suffolk Power Punch. I only have a Robin EY 13 on mine. My sister lives in Wales, and might be able to source the parts from there.
I would say eBay is a good place to start mate...
Hey Mick. David from Adelaide here. I have a Qualcast Suffolk Super Punch similar to the one on your clip. I've broken the throttle cable. The little cable end which is located in the throttle leaver broke. I'm looking for a replacement cable. Do you know where I can get one from?
Hi Mate can you email me some photos of i at micksmowers01@gmail.com
Hi mick im having some trouble with getting spark on one of these. Ive sorted a stuck exhaust valve and cleaned the carb so i have good compression and all. But ive cleaned the points and set them to 0.20 but still nothing. Do you know if you can repair the coil or if theres anything else i can look at? Thanks in advance :)
Do you know if the different models had different size sumps? I have a spare engine but the clutch housing is larger and the sump is deeper yet the block seems the same.
Hi riley boy and mick
Donald Dooley hi mate

Great video- want to get mine working again - stopped in July! What liquid did u put the carb in?
Hot water with some white spirit
Can't beat a old cast iron suffolk, and did you know it was based on a 1940's Briggs and stratton, even down to the zenith carb. Also the little leaver with the black knob on the chain case side disengages the drive to the rear roller
alan lake yeah it’s locked up so will be having another look at it. More to come on this mower.
