  • Guitarist and longtime Taylor product specialist Marc Seal walks through the different pickup positions and expansive tonal palette of the Taylor T5z with the help of touring/session guitarist and producer Sam Yun (Demi Lovato, JoJo, Tayla Parx). Marc and Sam demonstrate why our hybrid hollowbody electric makes such a versatile tool for guitarists, delivering a full range of amplified acoustic and electric sounds. Sam is playing our T5z Pro Denim model, featuring a figured maple top and hollow sapele body. The three-pickup configuration incorporates a magnetic acoustic body sensor, a high-definition neck humbucker (concealed under the fretboard extension) and a high-definition bridge humbucker. Five-way switching dials up this array of settings:
    Position 1: Neck humbucker and body sensor (closest to neck)
    Position 2: Neck humbucker only
    Position 3: Bridge humbucker
    Position 4: Neck and bridge humbuckers in parallel
    Position 5: Neck and bridge humbuckers in series
    Marc also explains how to use the volume and tone controls (bass and treble) to explore other tasty tonal flavors. Notable design specs include a 12-inch fretboard radius, jumbo frets, 24-7/8-inch scale length, 1-11/16 nut width and electric medium-gauge strings (.011-.049).

    Wish I'd have found this one before I bought the 12 I now have... Amazing versatility in the sound. A guy could reduce the amount of gear they're packing in and out of gigs significantly. Electric, acoustic and hollow body... one guitar and a myriad of diverse tones and sounds produced. Looks to me like Taylor has a solid winner here.

    Hey Marc thanks for posting the video. I saw you at a demonstration years ago at Jim's Music in Tustin CA and your demonstration of this guitar, as well as your playing, was phenomenal. You really brought it home how great the tone was and how your could hear every string equally and clearly. Everyone there was truly impressed! I recently found a T5z at a guitar center to try out myself and this really is an incredibly well-made guitar. Plays like a dream. I am definitely going to order one now that I can afford it, as soon as I figure out which one. Thanks again!

    The T5z was the first electric guitar I purchased. I got it in 2016 (T5z Pro Borrego Red). While I have purchased a few more since then (the standard "must haves"), the T5z remains my favorite. (1) The playability; (2) the tonal versatility; (3) did I mention playability. Simply, the most fun-to-play guitar I own.

    Been playing my Z for several years now. My only complaint is that it has spoiled me for playing other guitars... I can get good acoustic sound but it is much easier to play than most any full acoustic. Easily adapts to playing swing, western swing, country, folk rock, light rock- all just using a Fishman Loudbox with a little reverb and chorus. Can get a bit of distortion that works with a Boss overdrive pedal. Or fingerpicking originals, at home with no amp at all, sounds really nice. Great for acoustic players with hand arthritis issues. And so light and compact. You don't have the kind of upper neck access like a Strat, so don't expect that.

    I have a koa one. Looks stunning and sounds fine. For more electric sounds though it lacks a lot of what a strat or les Paul gives. It’s biggest problem though is that you get a lot of feedback into the amps from the hollow body. I use the same amp and on solid body guitars no feedback but when I plug the T5z in it has very bad feedback on the strings. Touching the strings stops this. Initially I assumed it was a grounding issue so I’ve done it with wireless transmitters but it’s still there. Pity as the guitar is lovely apart from that

      @@chrismccannIRL Have you seen the Grateful Dead Documentary?
      They solved all their feedback problems with a 5 degree phase shift. Owsley came up with the idea. That's why you see them with two mikes on each stand. They are phase shifted 5 degrees apart. So to do this with a guitar, I assume you would need a splitter and a phase shifter, which I'm gonna try on an electric violin, cause the whole instrument feeds back. Worth a try.

    It sounds good as far as it goes but I think It needs a blend knob ala PRS. It's nice to be able to use some acoustic sound under the humbuckers. 30% acoustic and 70% electric sounds pretty cool on a PRS with their Bangs system and two output jacks but this guitar can't do that apparently. The first position seems to be 50/50 and if you put some overdrive on it, you would lose the acoustic character.

  • @robb9uk
    @robb9uk Рік тому

    Interesting. Very full and rich output, pleasantly surprising. Very impressive as an all-round, versatile instrument, always though maintaining the undertones of its acoustic base. Nice range of genres covered (both the T5 and Sam 😉). Tbf, Godin can do much the same with LGX-SA multi-voice guitar, although their acoustic sounds are created rather than intrinsic as in this T5. It would be helpful to know what the rig is as the amping is a big factor in sound delivery and quality, especially the reverb and projection (all excellent btw). What kit did you use? A submerged humbucker in the neck, liking that a lot. 😎

  • @JTroskaTV
    @JTroskaTV Рік тому

    Is the G string unwound? Looks to be. And would be better for bends on the electric side. But I’m wondering how good the intonation can be up the neck with that seemingly uncompensated bridge. I have a Gretsch with an uncompensated bar bridge and it’s totally workable but chords do get a little wonky up the neck by modern standards.
