    Attention Attention.
    This may be lengthy mainly for the beginners feeling lost or looking for explanations because you want a real feel. This series of navigraph videos have me amazed at the precision, real world information and awesome depiction. I'm a new FAA ADX. (licensed/ cert aircraft dispatcher). Flight planning is what we do....and then some. In the interim of landing my first job as such, I practice my flight planning to keep things fresh and wanted to find some videos to also help. I found these videos. I'm in complete awe. Well spoken depictions/ demonstrations. Highly recommend. I have been a navigraph fan for 10 years but today they have really set even higher standard than before. Navigraph was one of the software programs that got me sooo curious about aviation til I couldn't help but to pursue a career in the field. Stick with navigraph. Amazing everything!!!! I am not paid for this review. I can't wait to get back into simming now that I've reached a major pinnacle in my journey.

    Your statement about the 2000FT and 3 miles is incorrect. You state that if the weather IS 2000FT or less or the visibility IS 3 miles or less you need an alternate. 91.169 states that an alternate is NOT REQUIRED if the weather is AT or ABOVE these conditions. In other words, if the weather is forecast to be a 2000FT ceiling AND the visibility will be at least 3 statute miles from 1 hour before to 1 hour after your ETA an alternate is NOT required.

      Hello, you need to be more specific, I couldn't understand your respond at first, now I understand why this video is incorrect, I hope to be right if you have 2000 FT ceiling or more and 3 SM visibility or more you don't need to file an Alternate, this video has to states that if you have less than 2000 FT ceiling or less than 3 SM visibility you need to file an alternate, RIGHT?

    Keep in mind that you may be able to use your departure airport as an alternate - especially if it is available and closer.

    Though it can be a good learning environment, UA-cam is not an Authorized Source, and should not be treated as such. Your first statement of when you need to file and alternate is incorrect. Part of being a pilot is knowing if the legal requirement begins at a prescribed altitude or stated visibility, above it, or below it. Alt mins are required unless the ceiling and vis are AT LEAST 2000 feet and 3SM. Not at those numbers or below. So if your destination airport is forecast to be 2000 overcast and 3SM vis within the 1 hour before to 1 hour after of your ETA, there is no legal requirement to file an alternate. Also, a very important caveat is in 91.169. This "1-2-3" rule only applies to airports that have an approved standard instrument approach procedure, or special approach procedure that has been issued by the Administrator to the operator. In other words, if you file an IFR flight plan to your destination airport, and it does not have at least one approved instrument approach under part 97, you must include an alternate airport.
    Sec. 91.169
    IFR flight plan: Information required.
    (a) Information required. Unless otherwise authorized by ATC, each person filing an IFR flight plan must include in it the following information:
    (1) Information required under Sec. 91.153 (a) of this part;
    (2) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, an alternate airport.
    (b) Paragraph (a)(2) of this section does not apply if :
    (1) Part 97 of this chapter prescribes a standard instrument approach procedure to, or a special instrument approach procedure has been issued by the Administrator to the operator for, the first airport of intended landing; AND
    (2) Appropriate weather reports or weather forecasts, or a combination of them, indicate the following:
    (i) For aircraft other than helicopters. For at least 1 hour before and for 1 hour after the estimated time of arrival, the ceiling will be at least 2,000 feet above the airport elevation and the visibility will be at least 3 statute miles.
    Some of the most important words in the FAR/AIM are the small ones like "AT, ABOVE, BELOW and AND".

    Why are you using the forecast before 1300Z on the TAF. The forecast before the 1300Z was released at 0911Z? That doesn't fall between the 1 hour before and hour after mark?Correct me if I'm wrong please.

      I noticed that too. In fact the prior time stamp was from a Metar that is generally current Wx data. So i don't consider the Metar data fell within the 1 hour before or after the ETA.

    What about a brown airport?

    • @AFO3310
      @AFO3310 7 років тому +1

      brown airports don't have approaches. if you choose 2 brown airports the weather must be VFR from MEA, approach and touchdown.

    • @AFO3310
      @AFO3310 7 років тому

      This is basically FAR 91.169 in one video

    • @robertdavidson1067
      @robertdavidson1067 6 років тому

      The destination brown airport has to have an alternate listed no matter what the forecasted weather is. The rule you are stating applies to the alternate airport.
      (c) IFR alternate airport weather minima. Unless otherwise authorized by the Administrator, no person may include an alternate airport in an IFR flight plan unless appropriate weather reports or weather forecasts, or a combination of them, indicate that, at the estimated time of arrival at the alternate airport, the ceiling and visibility at that airport will be at or above the following weather minima:
      (1) If an instrument approach procedure has been published in part 97 of this chapter, or a special instrument approach procedure has been issued by the Administrator to the operator, for that airport, the following minima:
      (i) For aircraft other than helicopters: The alternate airport minima specified in that procedure, or if none are specified the following standard approach minima:
      (A) For a precision approach procedure. Ceiling 600 feet and visibility 2 statute miles.
      (B) For a nonprecision approach procedure. Ceiling 800 feet and visibility 2 statute miles.
      (ii) For helicopters: Ceiling 200 feet above the minimum for the approach to be flown, and visibility at least 1 statute mile but never less than the minimum visibility for the approach to be flown, and
      (2) If no instrument approach procedure has been published in part 97 of this chapter and no special instrument approach procedure has been issued by the Administrator to the operator, FOR THE ALTERNATE AIRPORT, the ceiling and visibility minima are those allowing descent from the MEA, approach, and landing under basic VFR.
