I used to have this problem with a squeaky door but solved it by putting a bit of olive oil on the hinges.

You were in Eastern Highlands Province, that is part of the highlands they say is a bit more civil then other highlands provinces.
Coastal provinces vary in attitudes and behavioural patterns...You survived Png, as we say...if you experienced the highlands of PNG, other parts of the country would be a 'piece of cake living:
I'm a Papua New Guinean and I agree with everything your saying and it's still happening it's now at a worse rate....... You won't see axpatriats walking freely in Port Moresby City, they mostly drive around with vehicles, unlike other countries where expatriates walk freely....
Is it because there's a risk of kidnapping?
Expatriates are more likely to be robbed if walk on foot in the city...
I see them walking freely at Vision city, food world, the airport etc...etc...

That's sad that you and your family had to go through that in PNG. Everything you said is true. And it happens still today in many parts PNG. It's not always safe for women and girls and even young boys to be out at night and even day time. So many hooligans and opportunists. But it's good that you had your good experiences there too. And my condolences to you and your family for your loss. Things like that never go away from your memory.
Definitely agree that the school where you lived at was quite scary back than, it's different now, a lot of things have changed, there's still a couple of expatriate teachers there. I'm sorry you had a scary experience there but I can assure you it's different now. Maybe one day you can come back and visit, it's your home. Rape and domestic violence is still an issue, but things are coming into light. But for visitors from other countries or travellors wanting to come explore, I'd recommend you get in touch with a local or get a guide, someone who has lived in Papua New Guinea for more than 4 to 5 years and they'll get you safely around.
Depends what people you are around. Normal locals avoid crazies & dont like them. Still yeah it still can be very unsafe - usually cowardly/opportunists if you are vulnerable

I am sorry that you have to go through this with the negative experience you had at that whatever particular location you were at in PNG . I do not agree with alot of negativity and the generalization. PNG is a beautiful place and from where I come from (New Guinea Islands) is the most safest and you will enjoy with out a second thought.

Every place and country on earth has its limits either to go or not to go..There are some parts of PNG were you can walk freely and there are some were you can't if your not from that territory just like every other country..example, in PNG it's ok to walk to a shopping mall in Port Moresby(Capital) however, you can't walk through a settlement filled with violent gangs..keep it in mind and always research about were you at. Take care.
Nahh man, not sure where you've been, but now a days, no one can walk freely "to the mall" without getting harassed, even in Moresby, it's still not safe....
But I'll agree that there are limits to places you can go in different countries, but in PNG, in recent years, you can barely go anywhere anymore without being attacked

In Papua New Guinea once it's dark you HAVE to head home. Of course there's places that are no-go areas in every country/city but not enough where I have to fear for my life walking around midnight

Well, I would say that, every country has it's owm problems, I would not like to compare Png to any other country, becaise its is different in itself.
Papua New Guinea is a country with thousands of tribes and people with different customary upbringing united together trying to make sense of each other while being thrown into the westermised lifestyle, with the mindset still in a state of gradual transition,
So if an expatriate comes to Png, each will have their own experiences, depending on the nature of their occupation and environment they are placed into.
The best expatriates in Png that will provide an outsider a better view of Papua New Guinea, are Chinese, Sri Lankans and Bangladese.
These three nationalities of people can be seen living within tbe ranks and among ordinary Papua New Guineans.
There are also Pilipinos among locals here, who have married to Papua New Guineans and mingle amongst.
Chinese, followed by Bangladesh and Sri Lankans, speak Tokpisin and interact with locals.
But, they draw interaction boundaries so the locals know their lines.
Png is a nation of tribal groupings, and you have to network with locals in order to know how to move around among them.
Applies both in urban and rural areas.
Don't be disheartened with the comments, people have positive and negative experiences everywhere in world. Some people might just be unable to focus on the positive and exemplify the negatives just for content. I think Png is a interesting, unique and awesome nation which i would like to visit one day.

Filipinos are very laid-back people, that's why they are often shocked by the way PNG is. Not every country is laid-back, kind and easy going as Philippines.
Unfortunately there's lawlessness and violence in PNG but there's a lot of good in PNG as well. It's a resource rich country, with people owning most of the land tax free unlike Philippines where the top 20% own most land while 80% own 500sqm or less.
Port Moresby City And Lae City is liveable cities where so many Filipino OFW's are working and living.
I'm still wondering why there are so many papuans here in cebu being maids and acting like slaves

Your one experience from a particular place in PNG doesn't portray everyone here. Many locals in PNG are peace, loving and caring. Hospitality is in our nature to look after people.

I'm a Papua New Guinea and your absolutely right about a majority PNG men are very ugly on the inside and have animalistic behaviour. I go University of PNG and most women including myself get harrassed on a daily basis. I hate PNG men like this. Not all of them are like this it's just a majority of them that do this and give PNG a bad reputation. So sorry.

This country is not what people imagine.
Unlike Papua Indonesia, access to this country can be said to be quite difficult.
Access to the nearest country can only be via land route to Indonesian territory.
To buy some basic necessities, products made in Indonesia are the cheapest. But the problem is that the access from Port Moresby to Jayapura is a vast wilderness. And there is also no road access to Indonesia.
Although Papua New Guinea's currency is quite high. I would never want to live in this country because there are often quite serious riots.
Better to stay in Jayapura. Even though the situation is no different from PNG, Jayapura is safer. 😢

I guess in the Philippines it's just the same as PNG and some Cities around the world. Port Moresby the Capital City of PNG always portrays the bad image about PNG in general. Trust me, the rest of PNG is not like Port Moresby, it's more relaxed, safer, friendlier etc. It's great to see expatriates getting jobs in PNG like the Philippino's because the jobs here pays lucratives wages that improves their lifes back home.

Can you specify where exactly in PNG all this occurred? Our country is as bout as dangerous as any other country in the world, most might even say it’s less dangerous. Shouldn’t write PNG as a whole just because you had a bad experience in one particular place in PNG. Foreigners come here and are so biased.
