I can remember being so excited when I got the Nintendo NES for a 🎄Christmas🎄 🎁present.🎁 As I've said before, after that, well I was hooked when I got an Atari 2600, also a 🎄Christmas🎄🎁present.🎁 I loved video games and I got my first ever job which allowed me to buy more systems and games. Heck before that I would shovel ❄❄snow❄❄, 🍃rake🍂🍁leaves🍃, clean up people's yards, wash cars, whatever, and save my allowances too. One other system I feel wasn't given much credit or time was the TurboGraphx-16. Bonk's Adventure and Bonk's Revenge were two of the best "side scrolling adventures" to ever come out. Now decades later channels like this are going to help me in my quest to regain some of the best retro games that were released. Quite a few of them are available, but extremely expensive so knowing and seeing them played helps a lot!

If there was any old-school racing game to remake from the "Crusin'" era of racing games, this would be at the top of my list. The stage designs are really unique - bringing out the more exaggerated representations of California was a huge reason I dropped many quarters into the arcade and got the N64 version! Dat moment: --when in Silicon Valley, you end up driving into a computer; --when in San Francisco, you bypass all the traffic by driving on the cables on the sides of the Golden Gate! Those stuck out the most for me. =)
There are also the Fuji, Clover, Oval, San Andreas and California tracks that weren't covered here. The first three are dedicated racetracks; the San Andreas track puts you in a canyon on the fault line, and 'California' supersizes you and sends through the entire state like Kaiju NASCAR.
I'd never seen this before, very impressive - much better than Cruisin' USA. This has a grand sense of scale - think the huge waterfalls in Yosemite, and every track has something unique and iconic. Looks like the artists and designers had a lot of fun with this one. The music is quite varied as well, and mostly quite good.
The N64 version honestly doesn't have some of the effects as the actual arcade game does like there's a Stealth fighter that tries to bomb you when going through Fort Mojave.
I don’t understand the criticism this version has, You guys gotta understand the limitations the N64 had, N64 cartridges were small in space and couldn’t hold much (a regular N64 cartridge only held like 16-32 mb), that’s why it’s not exactly like the arcade version but I like both the arcade version and the N64 version the same, both get a 4 out of 5 in my books UPDATE: Ik N64 cartridges reach 64mb but 64mb N64 cartridges were non-existent when this game came out in 1999, the max at the time during this game's release was 32mb, 64mb N64 cartridges did not exist until Conker's Bad Fur Day which was released in 2001.

Then they made arcade games where you could actually sit down inside of it, like a car, sort of, but not completely. Then the Moto GP 🏍🏍Motorcycle🏍🏍🏁🏍🏁 game. They also made an excellent arcade game with a 🏍🏍motorcycle🏍🏍 you "rode" including the throttle. It was awesome. Then of course they were released for the home gaming systems. There were straight-up racing games, and then they added some unique features. For example Road Rash. Another 🏍Motorcycle🏍 game EXCEPT in this game you also had to battle while you rode. Using a bat, ⛓chains⛓, and other implements in order to 🏆win.🏆 This was a blast and I immediately bought it. Later another battle game was Twisted Metal. More of a demolition derby than a race, but still epically fun! This is the main reason I love the Retro games. They may NOT be as graphically advanced as the newest games, but they were extremely creative, unique, and most importantly they were FUN TO PLAY! They didn't have agendas behind them, or political ideas shoved at you. Just plain FUN! I MISS THOSE DAYS IMMENSELY! 😪

when i was 10 or so i used to play this with the neighbor all the time. i remembered it and downloaded a rom recently, only to find out what a boring game it is. sure reminds me of fun times from a long time ago, though.
This game would have been so much better on the PS1. From looking at ROMs, the arcade version comes in at around 600MB I think while the N64 ROM is just under 15MB.
Most of that rom size are just the FMV files of the arcade and higher quality textures. The assets themselves and their textures would be still be downgraded on PSX but the audio FMV will be nearly the same as the arcade. Then again, the precedent set by the PSX Rush port being ass put any possibility of this port aside.
1gb is actually enough for this emulator, whats make it difference is the processor you are using, but having 1gb more ram can improve performance especially if you have some program running on the background
how come every gameplay video of California Speed has people using WASD instead of analog steering? it's just jarring to watch. Also since you're not using analog steering, you're going to oversteer every single time.
The graphics are bad. Flat out bad. Actually, "flat" describes most of what you'll be seeing it's still a decently fun mindless racer when you get used to the control. Mindless racer being the type with absolutely no technique, just press gas and watch the screen unfold.

I've logged many hours of this eith my siblings back in the 90s. Love this soundtrack too. I remember every melody and I havent played since 02.

This game is disappointing as a port, but on it's own it's a great and fun racing game.
