A video combining two of my favourite interests! An absolute pleasure making (another!) fab appearance, one day the world will be ready for the full multi-hour design musings and ramblings of this yearly production behemoth!
8:00 But using the Northern lights for the logo is just perfect this year. Due to the 11-yearly rise in solar storms on the sun, this year the Aurora Borealis is visible in a way larger area. Last night it was even visible throughout almost the whole of England. It's almost like they knew that the night before the finale it would be visible in a surprisingly large area....
While the logos and theme art remain interesting, I HATE that Liverpool 2023's slogan "United by Music" has been stolen and co-opted by the EBU as the defacto slogan for all shows going forward. Not only does that take away creative choice from design teams looking pair the theme art with a bespoke slogan, but "United by Music" was chosen very specifically for the context of Liverpool having to host the contest on Ukraine's behalf due to the war. Take it away from that context and it becames stale and generic.
The fact that Aurora Borealis was visible from near enough the entirety of the UK for two whole days makes the comment about Malmo being too far south kinda hilarious.
I was working at one of the Eurovision venues in Malmö this year. (Got home a couple of hours ago lol) We actually got a faint aurora during the event.
9:53 as great as this logo is, I think we all just have to accept that four-way rotational symmetry was ruined by a certain German political party in the first half of the 20th century. Once they get hold of something, you can't get it back.
Hi Linus! I recently started studying how to speak Arabic, and I was thinking how cool it often looks written down, but then I started thinking about typefaces and how they might work in different languages! I do not have the network to see how this works, but maybe you do! Do you think that you could make a video on how typefaces look in different languages?
While I didn’t watch the contest this year due to ethical reasons, this was a really fun and interesting video that really taught me a lot about the history of its style.
When you say the song contest was set in Microgramma, the Istanbul example you showed just before was set in Bank Gothic (at least, the first line was).
As an American I've never had much exposure to Eurovision (I only just found out yesterday that Céline Dion's international career was launched by her winning 1988 performance!), but I always appreciate your design insights and it was fun to take a trip through design history while learning about Eurovision along the way. I also really appreciate you providing high quality captions, which unfortunately even some creators with millions of subscribers fail to do--it really makes a big difference in intelligibility compared to the autogenerated ones, particularly for specialized language! I did want to point out a few points for correction, though. I've divided them into two sections: the first section contains all the critical bits that significantly impair meaning, and the second section is a superset which also includes minor errors including nitpicky style aspects that are debatable. i have the heart of the eurovision logo tattoo'd! it means a lot to me, and this channel covering it is very interesting this year, especially since i've been boycotting it. your insights are always worth it.
Funnily enough, due to the incredibly strong solar storm yesterday and the day before yesterday, the Northern Lights could be seen as far as the Alps. So, the Aurora Borealis theme was actually very much on point.
5:16 Why is this logo part of the first section? It's for the Eurovision Song Contest itself, not Eurovision Network (like the first two logos) Eurovision Network was still using the "corporate" logo until 2012, then switched to their present logo which isn't even in this video.
It was very interesting seeing you and Fernand go through these logos, I was very much unaware of what Eurovision looks like in general, let alone before 2004. It's fascinating to see how many of the logos / art styles are a reflection of the periods they were used in. To me it really exposes how Eurovision helps shape the aesthetics we associate with those periods. The 1985 logo is the most obvious example to where it almost feels like a parody today, but the 1997/2000 have a distinct cybertech-ish feel that would fit right in with that Matrix-y vibe. Going back a little further, those 1970s logos used for the Dutch festivals feel really, REALLY 1970s to me. Even the more modern styles you guys highlighted (ones that that I consciously lived through myself) really LOOK and FEEL like they are "of that time". 2007 is almost a perfect reflection of what the internet/computer aesthetics felt like in that era - the Myspace era right before modern social media, platforms like ICQ giving way to Skype, a "macromedia flash"-like quality to the animations. It ties in a little with a late "frutiger aero" aesthetic. 2011 gives off those quintessential talent show TV program vibes - it looks and feels exactly like generic swipey text effects for an American Idol/America's Got Talent style television ad. My favorite might actually be Dublin 1995 though, it looks like a logo for a jazz festival, not Eurovision.
It's always humbling to see programming from outside the U.S with such huge viewership compared to stuff we think is the biggest in the world over here 😂
for some reason i was allways really interested in the visual presentation of eurovision this video feels like it was specificly made for my weird nieche interest lmao
As a Eurovision fan, thank you for this! And thanks for inviting a fellow fan to explain these things. I wanted to ask last year, when the contest was held in Liverpool, if you could do a design review of all the participating broadcasters's logos. Watching clips of Eurovision performances from before made me fascinated by the idents that always appear on the top or bottom of the screen.
It was fascinating to see how well each of these map directly into CARI aesthetics. 7:32 Cyberbougie, baybee, which was unexpected and kinda funny because I've struggled to find examples of it in the wild! 9:45 Supergraphic Ultramodern, a defining style of the 1970s with all those geometric, flat logos. 10:50 This isn't quite pure Memphis Milano, it belongs more to the styles that were emerging at the same time and eventually melded together into what CARI calls "contempo-eclectic", which came to define the 90s. I like Memphis Eclectic myself, I think it's a little more useful a name. The logo is very early Contempo Eclectic (see also the MTV logo in the 90s), but the stage design looks more like 80s art deco revival to me (Deco-Luxe in CARI's termonology) 11:19 this seems to sit at the limit of Laser Grid style and Silicon Dreams. Those stripped logos look very Laser Grid to me. 12:12 circling back to Memphis eclecticism again, but with a different take. The 90s were recognizeable and yet extremely plastic because Memphis eclecticism was borrowing and merging together a bunch of influences like new wave design and art deco (especially for its figurative motifs) 12:38 I'm surprised you're not making a dig at this for being a triple-swoosh logo lol 12:43-12:48 I think these would belong to Global Village Coffeehouse, a really weird place to encounter it! The second one does have aspects of Corpo Grunge/Memphis eclectic, though. 13:33 I see a little bit of Abstract tech (that one is from Aesthettics wiki, not CARI), but this is not really grunge. It looks like typical Corporate Gen-X Cyber to me. 14:24 We've moved all the way to Vectorheart now 14:52 We're in a somewhat late appearance of Ultramodern Revival here 15:16 This one is a little harder to sort because I'm not as familiar with it, but I'd say it's CARI's Synthwave. 15:40 This looks like Hexatron with heavy Metalheart influences. 16:00 Before Corporate memphis took over we had Vector Minimalism. This is it. 16:20 the way patterns were use is Corporate Memphis, which goes to show the grip that that style managed to achieve.
As someone that knows nothing about Eurovision, this is very confusing. Maybe I missed something but the contest didn't get it's own logo until 2014 but then you go back to show logos from before that time?
To me Eurovision has always been the "what not to do in logo design" example. If there was a way to pay to not hear or see about it I would do that in a heartbeat! 😂
it's a good time to post this, considering there should never be another eurovision again after how terrible this one is going while they unabashedly continue to support israel's war crimes
REally dissapointed with isreal gaining so many votes despite their army commiting war crimes and genocide at the exact same time as the show is going on.
The northern lights fact is actually not true. You can even see it all be it rarely in the Netherlands. Actually last night it was even visible in the south of The Netherlands.
But isn't it fun, that Eurovision "sent" northern lights south as far as Munich or maybe further. Since in the nights of Friday to Saturday and to Sunday they could be seen. 😉

that joke/complaint about aurora borealis is so poorly timed lmfao.
Damn you solar storms, ruining my pedantry!
It might have ruined a decent bit of pedantry, but it was *so* insanely badly timed as to end up as a laugh out loud moment - you win some, you lose some!
Aged like milk. 😂
@@RichardPolhill But with potential for a fine cheese?
8:02 Such a bad timing for roasting the Northern Lights theme accuracy, as just yesterday it was visible even from Hungary, haha!
2:54 - Sanremo, not San Marino, but easy mistake to make, they do look rather similar
Oh hello there!
As an Italian who doesn't follow those things I was extremely confused, so thanks for clarifying
oh that makes so much more sense, given that san marino isn’t italy. was confused for a second

Man, going from that timeless first logo to the abject horror that is the 90s design felt like being dropped from 30,000 feet without a parachute.

There's a new Linus Boman video, I click.
2:52 I think you mean Sanremo, not San Marino. Easy mistake to make!
4:17 The new logo actually debuted during the end credits of Eurovision 1994.
Great video, thanks for show us the variety of logos and graphuc resources of Eurivision.
If someone is qualified for a Eurovision video, it's Fernand. So happy to see another collaboration between two great video creators.
im so glad to see this collaboration i love them both
7:53 funny you note this literally the same weekend there’s a solar storm and northern lights can be seen as far south as Spain 😂😂🤣🤣 great video!
The fact that Aurora Borealis was visible from near enough the entirety of the UK for two whole days makes the comment about Malmo being too far south kinda hilarious.
Thanks for the introduction to Fernand's channel, I'll go subscribe immediately!
I was working at one of the Eurovision venues in Malmö this year. (Got home a couple of hours ago lol)
We actually got a faint aurora during the event.
and when the world needed him most, he came back with a relevant topic

This was so incredibly good, I actually with this was a multi-hour analysis of the styles for every year
That 2011 theme art looks like the intro played at AMC theaters before each movie.

5:16 Why is this logo part of the first section? It's for the Eurovision Song Contest itself, not Eurovision Network (like the first two logos)

One could even see the Northern Lights in Germany this year, so it’s totally ok for Malmö to use them.
The Aurora was quite visible in the Gothenburg area this weekend, just about 25 km from Malmö...

the netherlands logo also looks like the insert you used to play a 45 record

That was the 2020 logo, which was brilliant. The 2021 logo was a bit as good take on that…

I also really like the Eurovision jingle (not necessarily the event logo). Im not a TV expert, but I believe it signals the handover to the EBU feed.
I watched another video showcasing the Eurovision Song Contest logos about 5 years ago, and that actually got me into Eurovision.
Error: San Remo not San Marino at 2:53
Sitting here at the 52nd parallel with aurora photos I took just the night before this video. Oops. 😂
Another Australian designer up at 5am ✋ Let's see what next year's logo/winner is!
what's that font with the weird "a" in the storyblocks insert? :o

The 2018 Lisbon had amazing visuals. I found it more interesting than the examples from the 2010s you gave. But overall good progression
i saw the northern lights in england the night before the final so idk
You don't leave your house?
This was so interesting! I never noticed, that there were so many different logos. I think the butterflies were my favourite.
