The angel of the shannon. Beautiful. I was unaware of this tragic event. Best wishes to everyone connected to this documentary and tragedy. From Limerick Eire.
Amazing! I'm 72, and have a very vague memory of driving past Blackbush, and seeing loads of Connies, they cercainly were beautiful A nightmare to build, I'm sure, but almost "art deco". I have flown in a Handly Page Hastings, similar vintage.
Thanks for another great video. As you mentioned covering other disasters in this period, you might consider the 1948 KLM Constellation crash near Prestwick; the captain was the legendary KD "Dirk" Parmentier. Do please have a look into this one. Thanks again. Cheers 🍻!
@@petermcgarrymusicandflyingThe Prestwick Connie crash was a very complex incident. I was fortunate to get help from the Dutch Air crash investigater. The aircraft was Nijmegan. PH - TEN.
@@petermcgarrymusicandflying I have info about the Hugo de Groot crash. There was another KLM plane lost in 1954 as well as the Triton. I think it was a DC6. It left Shannon on the final leg of a NYC to Amsterdam flight and crashed into the North Sea. All aboard were killed
Very interesting. I think Capt Viruly was harshly treated. There were some mechanical issues but he appears to have gotten 100% of the blame. I hope all of those on board are now at peace. I have some interesting information on the Hugo de Groot crash. Pl provide me with an e mail address.
@@skweekmouse9712 I know that as I live about half a mile from there. There is a mass grave but a separate grave close by with a Dutch inscription where a baby girl from the flight is buried. Some in the mass grave were later reinterred in their home countries. Others are identified but others remain identity unknown. I think a plaque should be erected to display all the victims' names, including all 65 whose remains were never recovered.
The photo at 3:52 and 10:09 is of an early model standard Constellation, not the later Super Constellation involved in the accident which was about 17 feet longer, had rectangular windows replacing the round windows of the early models, and had a significantly more powerful version of the Wright 3350 engine.
Me neither. I was born in 1959 and grew up in Cork. My mum's sister had a family in Limerick and we used to visit. One time when I was about 9 or 10 (no idea really) we were there for the weekend and for some reason my dad was going to pick up someone for them at Shannon Airport the next day and I was due to tag along. I got bumped off and I've had a hissy fit and been miserable ever since! I was so looking forward to it. I moved to Dublin and took a few flying lessons there in the 80's. I've been in London 37 years. Not only had I not heard of this crash, (and only 10 minutes in I don't know exactly what happened yet but I will) ........... ............. but now I hear there are at least FIVE air accidents out of Shannon alone? I was dumbfounded. I've nearly always followed air incidents through magazines (US "Flying") and in recent years by following several YT channels. Don't worry Mr Leahy, I will finish this video and catch your original story from late last year; and also try to read the book soon. Terrible story, especially the Flight Attendant who had a similar time to Anne Frank during the war, but survived, though her parents did not,and was thriving. Thank you.
My dear Sir, the correct word is STEWARD or Stewardess, but NOT (flight attendant) which is not a very good word whatsoever, because the word is facist, and there is no reason whatsoever to utilize the ugly language or word 😢😢😢😢😢😢😢
This is such an inept and unprofessional film. The people behind it should be ashamed, If you cannot do the research and present in a humane way stop now!
I’m definitely not seeing what you are seeing. The film expressed nothing but sympathy for the victims and an understanding of their plight. It also expressed an understanding of the time they were living in and the technological limitations of that time. Inhumane it was not so I’m at a bit of a loss to understand what prompted your vociferous venting.

Thank you kindly. We thought it fitting to remember the 70th. Thanks.
Flew on a KLM Constellation from Milan to Amsterdam in 1960 at night. It was empty. Beautiful plane. Had no idea they had so many crashes.

Thank you. Who knows maybe someday we will do a piece I'm Prestwick. The biggest hurdle is finding local interviewees. Thank you so much.

My Mother was a nurse at that Hugo De Groot crash. She is mentioned in Peters video on it.
I saw that video. My late mother was a nurse in Galway Hospital at that time. If I had Petes e mail, I have more info.
Many of the dead of Hugo De Groot crash are buried in Bohermore Cemetery, Galway, particularly those who could not be identified

Are you also a train spotter ;-)..and a stamp collector ?
@@anthonydowling3356I like trains. Zero interest in stamps. Mostly aircraft after spending 35 years in the airline industry.

Glad you enjoyed the film. On this channel all of the crashes are documented. The book is called Falling Stars.

There have been many crashes at and around shannon, you could get another two books out of tham
As far as I know, in the post-war years, there have been 7 crashes in Shannon involving fatalities.
I have a comment for the journalist. The correct word for flight deck is COCKPIT, period 🎉🎉🎉😮
first have heard about this L/Constellation Disaster.........................so sad.
I can remember the accident.
Thanks Michelle. I hope you got something out of this. The full Triton film is on this channel. Filmed in December 23.

Hi Mark. The original documentary was recorded in December 2023. If you can't find it further back on the channel I will send you a link later.

What on earth are you rabbiting on about Spielberg?
Thats a bit harsh! They are probably not professionals, but they are doing their best. It's not the BBC after all!
