    I've had three Dahons, a Speed 7, Silvertip (VERY unfortunately stolen!) and now a Mariner D7. About 30 months ago I got a cheap little electric-a Plug with 16" wheels and a single speed. But only 35lbs and 350W. I have to say I love electrics. I have 10,000kms on it now. Recently I went back to the Mariner thinking I might lose weight, but no, it's not that simple. I think I rode farther on the electric. Anyway now i am back to it, at least when it is windy. The riding effort seems about the same. The Dahon weights about 10lb less and it has gears. It's only on the steep climbs I miss the motor. And the into incessant wind we have here on Vancouver Island! It's hilly here, too. Anyway, I've been riding since '71, so you can imagine how old I am! BTW, if you EVER try an electric, you WILL buy one. And even the cheap ones are good.

    I own a Dahon Cadenza from 2009 and they are a quality folding bike maker behind Brompton, the leaders in folding bike industry. The Unio E20 seems a good product. The quick release seat post can be a problem, but if the bike is always with you, it would les of a problem. Thieves tend to steel the whole bike.

      @Techtablets  Рік тому +3

      Yes they do make quality bikes this is a good one alright. Still a lot battery is expensive to replace and just adding a lock to the quick release is what most brands do. They told me they will be adding it.

    That makes a lot of sense, I really like it. It is strong enough to help on sloops, and it looks cool, and it fits into a boot, too! And then 16 kg! Good one I will consider, if my wife releases the dough ...

      The combination of the mid drive motor and the gears works well with the climbs. Good build to, hopefully I'll review more of Dahon's ebikes.

    What would you recommend for a tail light and locking mechanism of some sort for this bike? Just purchased it and couldn't agree more I wish it had those two features built in! Not sure if there is a 3rd party recommendation you could make for either of those :) I am in Chicago and a bit worried about going in for coffee or something and my battery will be gone. PS thanks for this GREAT video! Was super helpful in learning my bikes features!

    • @Techtablets
      @Techtablets  Рік тому +1

      Many tail lights you can get from bike shops etc. As for the quick release lock for the battery I'm still searching AliExpress for one.

      Bell makes a cool rear light/turn signal that Walmart sells for abut $20. I just use a beefy U-lock from a known company like Abus or Bell. ANY lock can be cut with a cut-off wheel but thicker ones take longer and discourage thieves. Leave the bike in a public place during the day and take it in at night. Mine fits just in front of the door or folded in a closet. Securing the seatpost - no idea but I don't think a thief would realize it was in there, nor would he have a place to sell such a unique item. My battery is inside the main tube.

      Wear or carry an empty backpack while riding and ALWAYS take the battery out to carry WITH you whenever you lock up and leave your bike anywahere. It's a very small and light battery.Probably not more than 5 pounds.I hope Dahon engineers a decent lock for its stealthy seatpost nest in future iterations...without inflating the already healthy cost!! BTW, Thanks for the great hill test and your informative review! I'm in the usa and considering a dahon k-one mid drive with similar specs .But it weighs42lbs.without fenders or bike rack!!Hope i can find the Unio E 20 on sale here.

    The unlockable battery is a bit of an oversight for sure! Otherwise a great foldable ebike, with very good build and ride quality. The mid mount electric motor, with the battery located above it, makes all the difference doesn't it Chris! A very efficient design indeed! 👌👍

    I'm seeing one big drawback to this frame. Suppose you want to utilise the foldable design to store it... and you want to charge the battery separately, eg. store the heavier rest of the bike in a bike-locker in office building, but take the battery upstairs to the office to charge it for the ride back... you kind of cannot, cause the design uses bottom part of the seatpost battery for stability when folded, without it the bike can roll on its rear or on its chain/front blade, either way possibly damaging itself or, if storing on carpeted or better upholstered surfaces, either damage or get the storage location dirty. Had they put mid-mounted horseshoe kickstand under that engine/pedals, it could have been used whether folded or unfolded or when the stand was folded it could have served as a stable platform to rest the weight of the bike on without the seatpost battery in...

    • @haipengsong8625
      @haipengsong8625 Рік тому

      There are very few scenes where you need to fold and not be able to let it lie down...

    • @barrybogart5436
      @barrybogart5436 Рік тому

      It would have to be a long commute to require a midday charge. Anyway its time for bike lockups to have power outlets! Mine just fits inside the door, by the fridge where I plug in the charger. I NEVER go out without it, so it is no trouble there. My battery is inside the frame and hard to remove.

    • @marcin_karwinski
      @marcin_karwinski Рік тому

      @barrybogart5436 Well, yes and no... if you recharge each time you get to drive it, or prior to it to be exact, regardless of actual power left, you're going to wear out the battery sooner. If you do it only when reaching low charge remaining, you might end up requiring to charge exactly after reaching the workplace. Otherwise, your ride back home will require far more of you... in other cases, your destination so eg the workplace may be a long ride away at well over 40km, and if you want to get there without a sweat, regardless of any hill climbs along the way, you'd be using assistance a lot on the way to... now, to get back without a sweat, you'd need to recharge the battery midday, during your stay at to location, to have enough juice for the way back to from location... and while bike lockers at work should have power outlets integrated, it's kind of the same as with other EV infrastructure as that is rarely given, only slowly getting there. So you might need to fold it for storage and take the battery with you upstairs to the office/apartment to charge it where you can supervise it safely or basically where you can charge it anyway. And if you live in a block of flats, you might have a bike locker in a communal space or can "arrange one yourself" in a dedicated cellar storage compartment, both located in the underground level, both may lack power outlets, as these places/options were for a long time simple storage only purpose, not built with your EV "parking" places in mind. Then, to charge your vehicle, you need to store the bulk of the bike in the storage downstairs and carry just the battery upstairs for the juice-up or for eg. winter/bad weather/other prolonged period of storage. Especially since carrying this heavy vehicle multiple flights of stairs may not be something you'd be willing to do regularly. That means you may need to fold the bike downstairs and remove the battery, hoping folded design will not fall over and break, dirt, or misalign anything on the bike or around it. A simple horseshoe-like extension deployable from the support area could very well serve as the best support for the bulk of the folded form without any fear of it rolling or falling to either side...
      So yeah, it would have been better if all bike lockers or cellar storage compartments had grounded and secured power outlets with fire detection and suppression for the compartment in case there is an unwanted spark or overcurrent or overheating issue or other battery plus charger worst case scenario playing out. But alas, in many a block of flats or offices/parkings there is nothing yet. Maybe some newer buildings may have them, or maybe some building owners may adapt older designs to current needs, but it's not a given in far more places than it is available now... and prepping for such situations is something the engineers may have to take into account when designing the products.

      @@marcin_karwinski All I can say is that I have had my bike for 30 months, and have charged it every night. I usually do 25kms a day so I have 70% left. I have 10000 kms on the bike. Batteries last longer than you think. Area 13 guy says 1000 charge cycles at least. My bike has 16" wheels and weighs 35 lbs. so it is convenient. I don't know why people buy 80 lb fatties.
