The Drill Sgt who trained and later caught a Private trying to break back into basic training has been found! I provide some more information on the now infamous Drill SGT and share a fantastic cadence he brought to light. May the Coveted P.O.B. show others how you've gone above and beyond in your service. Doesn't matter if you're Army, Navy. Marines, Air Force or Coast Guard, you too can get a P.O.B.

He's a drill sergeant for the 89B's in training at E Co 832, absolute unit. Man was practically everyone's favorite drill sergeant since he barely cared about regs and always took care of his soldiers, whether he pt'd them to teach a lesson or he worked with them to accomplish a goal or solve a problem. I was in the 89D platoon so i wasn't directly under him, but he was still a regular face and i was happy to be one of his soldiers.

I deeply apologize for letting everyone down with my misleading caption of given them the smoke. Seeing as in today's army if you actually post something even remotely close to given them the business, you're done for. So I'd actually like to keep my hat and badge. We gave them the smoke with the cadence. They thought they would outdo us but they were sadly mistaken

Drill Sergeants may at times come off like they don't have hearts or souls, but nothing could be further from the truth. The only things they have more of are balls and loyalty. I remember basic training when they first started bringing the females into mixed basic training with the guys. We were out tossing our grenades on grenade day. Young lady in the bunker next to me limp-wristed her live grenade up and at our bunker. Before I knew what was happening, my DI had slammed me to the ground, wrapped his hand around my hand holding my grenade then covered my entire body with his. A thud later, paint chips falling off the walls, he got up, ordered me up and we both looked to our right. The young woman was getting it full blast from two if not three DI's. Potentially, he saved my life. My respect level for DI's went off the scale after that incident.

What I remember most is the muffled explosion as I stared at the wall, seeing the flakes of old white paint pop off the wall then fall to the ground. Now if it had made it over the wall to the inside, yea, that would have been bad news.

I literally stopped dead in my tracks as I have heard that SAME voice hundreds of times over again. I don't know what possessed me to do this, but I did an about face and sure as shit, there he was. Drill Sergeant Baker was standing there staring through my soul, again. First words out of his mouth, "What the fuck are you doing here? They haven't kicked you out yet?" I about shit a brick but we talked for a bit and shook hands. One of the coolest/scariest moments that I have ever had as a private.

We had a Drill Sergeant in Basic that was 61 years old, Native American, and loved having fun. He always screwed around with the trainees, cracked jokes, and if you didn’t see him there was a 50% chance he was directly behind you. One night when he sent us all to bed, we had all watched him exit through the front entrance. Then we proceeded to all have conversations as one does after lights out. Five minutes later we heard, coming from the latrines, was the Drill Sergeant saying “Good night, Trainees.” As he walked yet again to the front entrance.

Here's a little wisdom for everyone: we "manage" paperwork, projects & budgets. We LEAD people.
Managers aren't necessarily leaders. It may seem a bit pedantic here but think of (Army specific here) the difference between a MSG and a 1SG. Which spends more face time with troops? Which gets more paper cuts?

We were marching back from our group graduation photo and as we turned a corner we came face to face with two trainee's who apparently were not where they were supposed to be, drinking soft drinks and be-bopping down the street. They saw two platoons of nothing but DS' bearing down upon them. One of them actually screamed, dropped his drink, turned around and ran. The Army called them Dining Facilities forever. DFAC, is short for Dining Facility. But that all changed when they started calling them "Warrior Restaurants". And the Barracks are now "Junior Leaders Quarters" but nobody calls them that, except the higher ups, cause they get in trouble for saying DFAC or Barracks.

Best drill I had later became my pl as a chief, man came from the marines, joined the army, became a infantryman then sniper and ended up as a drill in arty land, dropped a packet for warrant.
This man was an absolute unit, he was harsh as drills should be but if he saw one of us or all of us struggling with something and pull us aside and talk to us like a human being at the moment.
He's part of the reason I got out of basic without being recycled ( I dislocated my shoulder in the first week and didn't report it for fear of being recycled, needless to say I caught a shit storm for it) before every major event he asked what the profile was and if I felt I could complete the task, of course I responded that I thought I could and I did. Told us all his war stories, dialed down for those of softer hearts, literally taught several people how to use a rifle and worked with them until they could pass the Qual, I know they are supposed to but he went above and beyond. He gave us top tier pointers and gave us a few compliments here and there, mainly at the range.
Tldr: senior drill from Sill was an absolute unit that I would gladly serve under again and go through the fire and flames with. Helluva warrant too.

My favorite Drill Sgt. story was when my dad was in Marine Corps boot camp. One of the Drill Sgt's heard a recruit say something stupid and lined all of them up in front of the lockers. The Star Wars prequels were coming out around this time, and said Drill Sgt. was a massive Star Wars fan. Right when the Drill Sgt. got in my Dad's face, the first thing my dad did was wave his hand in the Drill Sgt's face and go: "This is not the recruit you're looking for." The Drill Sgt. had promptly put his cap in his face, and walked into his office, where another Drill Sgt., who saw my dad be a smart ass, told him and a few recruits next to him to drop and give push-ups. I still laugh at that.

I own 2 cars, a brand new home in the place I fell in love with: Manhattan, KS. (Duty First, Fort Reilly!)People complained about Basic and AIT.... I laughed with a warm bed and food to eat. And I learned some things along the way. The Army was the best decision of my life.

People focus way too much on Drill Sergeants yelling, and say to just fly under the radar and keep your head down. What shitty advice! Afraid to get yelled at so don't be noticed? The people I saw who had the most development and advancement in Basic Training were those who stood out, got smoked and learned from their short comings. There's a difference between "volunteering for shit" and just being a tool. The guys who did well in PT, volunteered when asked, and made mistakes were some of the most hardened soldiers when graduation day came.

I remember getting my ass chewed out by an Air Force MTI by the name of Evans. We were still fresh in our dorm/barracks security, and he was trying to get into our dorm. I saw that he was with our MTIs, so I thought that it was okay. He then began to yell in my face that he could've been a bad guy using my instructors as bait or way to break in. He taught me a valuable lesson that, when it comes to security, even if you know the people who are out there, no one is above reproach. If you do not know, or even do know, that they do not have authority to enter, they are not allowed inside, and to always follow procedure, in and out of life or death situations. So I applaud him. That, and he was a funny guy when we were able to relax after graduation, even thought that our impressions of him were spot on.

I remember every single Drill Sergeant I had through training by name... Drill Sergeant Nordloff especially. He was our Drill on the cattle truck from the cookie cutter in Ft. Lost in the woods to the Alpha 35th barracks where I spent my Basic and AIT. On the way to the training area, I remember his speech. He said, "I am Drill Sergeant Nordloff and on behalf of the Company Commander, Cpt. Aident and the Base Command Sergeant Major Jackson, we would like to welcome you to your stay here at Ft. Leonard Wood... Now put your F***ing faces in your bags"!!!! The rest was kind of a blur because he got real loud and I was scared. Then there was a Private at the back of the truck who started giggling... He got real quiet for a second before he said, "Private, if you don't stop laughing right now, I'm going to turn into Super Man, fly over everyone, and get you". Not going to lie, I had to peak a little. I see this guy grab a hold of a couple Privates as he pulled himself up and on top of them, then he low crawled his way across the top of everyone in a direct B-line path straight for that kid. He kicked some kid in the face with his boot and blacked his eye. He got to Mr. Giggles and put him up against the truck wall and proceeded to cuss him up one way and down the other. He then got silent out of nowhere for a couple seconds before yelling out, "Holy shit, Private, did you shit in your pants"?!!!! Followed by, "Drill Sergeant, yes Drill Sergeant"! That kid was Private shit stains for the rest of Basic.

In the Barracks he'd act normal when no Drills were around......I shit you not this guy would act scared of the DS's ALL the time we'd be in line for chow and another Drill would scream private from another platoon and this kid would turn towards the yelling at parade rest thinking the Drill was yelling at him. SO as you can imagine this guy was spinning like a top!! The only way he got out and maybe by this time he really was crazy he decided to attack the CSM of the Base!! My grandpa served in Europe after VE in WWII but because Japan hadn't surrendered he is considered a WWII vet. My grandpa was a third grade dropout and would be classified as a punk kid by today's standards. He served in the Army among a bazooka squad. He came home, married my grandma and had his family. He suffered from dyslexia and possibly ADD but he passed his qualifications to become an electrician and joined the Union. He started a side business selling CBs in the 70s that allowed him to retire from being an Electrician to focus on his business. He became a successful millionaire. When I was growing up, he instilled discipline and my love of learning always telling me that he didn't want me to drop out but succeed. Even if he doesn't get the POB, I am still proud of him. He passed away but I wanted to share his story to hopefully inspire people to overcome their obstacles in life. Love you Grandpa.

Oh my gawsh! I 100% nominate my husband for an Angry Cops POB! He was an MTI (AF Drill) at Lackland and a Trainee ran away on his second day of basic. My husband (Michael) dumped all the paper work he had in his hands, it went flying everywhere, called out to the squadron, “WE GOT A RUNNER!” and took off on foot after him, taps on his boots and everything. His flight just stood there absolutely astonished at what was happening. This kid flagged down a car that was passing by said, “HELP THEY’RE AFTER ME!” and jumped in. Michael continued to chase him down and finally the driver stopped and the kid jumped out and darted into the mini mall that was full of PP, civilians, workers, and other trainees. Michael was able to catch him in the back corner of the small BX and get him to the care he needed. Then he went back and made sure his flight was ok and provided mentorship about the situation to ensure none of his trainees were panicked by what happened. There are so many details to this story and funny parts, but I wanted to just lay the outline for the nomination! My husband is a HUGE fan of your channel and we watch your videos all the time. Keep up the solid work, Drill! 🖤

Senior Drill Instructor Ssgt Smith in the Marine Corps remembered my husband and played cross the street in front of my car with him. I found that story quite touching about how even Drill Instructors have big hearts and they genuinely care about people. He was (and still is in my husband's mind) my husband's Drill Instructor the other two were Sgt Mezic (k?) And Sgt Blue. So if anyone knows them let them know, we, as a family are reveling in the great stories of my husband just wishing he could have been shot at for real in boot camp just to gtf away from those 3. Apparently they were evil, cruel, mean and nasty... I say they were just misunderstood but then I've been called all that too. They sound like fun loving friendly individuals who have big hearts and care about people. They let my husband live through boot camp and for that generosity I believe they should be remembered as epic and given a POB (he's still traumatized to this day. Lovely work gentlemen, well done. Please teach me your skillz... )

1986 at Ft Knox, graduation day and we have been released to our family. I was in the parking in the van my dad rented to bring the family. I just to got in for the dive back to Va. and Drill Sgt Scott walks up and starts yelling for me to get out of the van! I thought I would die. I get out and he begins to tell me that I belong to the Army now and I better not forget it. Lol! My parents about had a heart attack because they thought I was not going to go home. Well played DS, well played.

I graduated US Navy basic at Recruit Training Command Great Lakes , Illinois in 1985 . Company 85093 , 11th Division . I'll never forget my Company Commanders , IC1 Adgie and ABE2 Green . During one morning muster we came up short one recruit . The local cops found the recruit sitting on a park bench feeding the pigeons bread and brought him back to RTC . After the CCs had long talk with him in their office he continued training and graduated with the rest of the company . The CCs could have ASMOed him back to day one or had him discharged , but they saw some sailor potential in him . My Company Commanders designated me Laundry Recruit Petty Officer , which made me responsible for my company's uniform washing and distribution . They forgot to pin a Recruit Petty Officer crow on me . On the last day of basic when they collected the crow badges they asked me for mine and I told them I never received one . They found an extra crow in their desk . When I got to OS 'A' School I discovered that I had been meritoriously advanced to E2 by my CCs . So I went to the NEX and had Seaman Apprentice stripes sewn on . Thank You , Petty Officers Adgie and Green !

When I went to basic training, my brother was somehow in the same base, same battalion, and same platoon.
For two weeks, one of my Drill Sergeants didn't know that he had a pair of brothers in his platoon.
"Hold up... THERE'S TWO OF YOU?!"
    "Uhh, yes Drill Sergeant!"
    "And you're brothers?!"
    "Yes Drill Sergeant."
    "Who let that happen?!"
The other DS: "You said you'd take them both."

Calling cadence... Vietnam war era, Ft. Polk, Louisiana, our basic training company was marched down to the church on a Sunday morning with every drill sergeant in attendance. As we entered the church parking lot, with all the Ft. Polk service members and their families getting out of cars and heading into the church, one of our younger Drill Sergeants started calling a cadence we used sometimes, "Do your balls hand high, do your balls hand low, can you tie them in a knot, can you tie them in a bow, can you throw them over your shoulders...." Suddenly all of other Drill Sergeants vanished into thin air, like magic, except the young one calling cadence. They were all a lot smarter than he was, and wanted no part of it. The looks from all the brass and families heading into church was wonderful.

Larry Lepkowski was one of my drills at Leonard Wood back in the '80s. Smartest and toughest guy I ever met, but funny all day long. One day while out rucking somewhere, a Duce 1/2 rolls by in the opposite direction, "Waters, grab that truck". I fall out and run after the truck. Eventually, the driver stopped and asked wtf I was doing. I explained. He turned the truck around and drove me to the class area. When I got there I reported that I had caught the truck as ordered. He then ordered me to "Set it free Waters, set it free". Then he pulled me aside and shook my hand.

Yes, DS’s leave a lasting impression. My SDS, DS Binkley, of A Co. 2-10 in the summer of 2018. I remember only him calling out “Re-Up and Join” cadence. A cadence about going through the branches and what they do, kind of making a mockery. But when we get to “REUP and join the Army…” and after what the Army does, he would yell, “GET UP OFF YOUR LEFT!” And it was like the most, “FUCK YEAH, LETS GO😈” motivating shit. I got to call it once while marching the platoon back from EST and I BELTED it with a metal scream as loud as I could and I was told he smirked. Possibly made him slightly impressed.🤷🏻‍♂️ He was a HARD DS, but, I absolutely respected him and my other DS’s; DS Horton and DS Largen.

Don't think I can ever forget my Company Commanders (Company 117, Great Lakes) from Navy Bootcamp in 1978. From the first night with the shit can sailing into the barracks spaces to drilling. Our Company Commanders asked us if we wanted a break, then asked if we smoked. No smoke, no break. later asked us if we wanted to go to church services on Sunday. Most said no so he said basically "Great, then lets go drill on the field!" Their prep talk, "I have 90 people in this Company, I never graduate with more than 60!" Started out in wooden barracks at Camp Moffett before we were transferred to the luxury open bay barracks.
I served 23 years and retired as a Chief Petty Officer (CPO / E-7). Can close my eyes and still see and hear them.
