- ►The first-ever Red Bull Sledhammers challenged riders to a unique head-to-head hill cross competition on the slopes of Ski La Réserve in Quebec, Canada. On hand to take it in were mountain bike icon Darren Berrecloth and snowmobile legend Levi LaVallee. The catch? They both brought different machines: Berrecloth brought a snowbike, LaVallee brought a snowmobile. Go through the differences of the two together with Alex Pettit. Watch them put their machines to the test! Who would win in a race of jumps and turns? The snowmobile or the snowbike?

Don't want to sound mean, but wouldn't have been a better comparison if we had a snowbike rider who was considered a pro MX racer at some point in his career?
I was just thinking the exact same thing. You've got a pro sled racer dude against some guy that isn't a pro motocross guy.

Would be better if the two engines were similar in size as well. I'm guessing the bike was a 450, I bet the sled was much larger (and multi-cylinder).
Wouldn't have mattered snowmobiles are considerably faster. I'm so pissed that they replaced sno cross in the x games with snow bikes!
bonemaster J snowmobiles run a twin 600cc 2 stroke motor so yeah it makes more power

this was a very biased race because of profession, bike engine size, and they only race once giving more room for error.
Terrible angles on the video making it hard to actually tell the difference, in my opinion. I was pretty sure about the outcome but a bit more distance would give a better perspective of how big the difference is.
We all should have known the result when you have a machine that has more than twice the horsepower of the other. Not a really fair comparison, but cool to watch anyway. Thank you Red Bull!

Man. That was all in the motor. Snowmobile has a clear power advantage and can transfer it to the snow so much more effectively, makes sense why he was waiting for him at the finish

Plus, what does that sled gear(track& front sled) add to that KTM, 60lbs, 70lbs or ? I don't know, but it's a helluva lot more weight then a pair of excel rims + hubs and dunlop mx 32's.I think that's a 450 too which is around 70hp, still far off from the snowmobile 2 stroker.
Try closer to 200hp race sled. Levi dont ride a stocker.

@@rando6969 Stick KTM/Husky 450s make 63hp outta the crate. Pipe and a quick remap will get you 70 easy. I guess I should add that I race a 20 450 SFX with those mods and more. Also, why are you writing me about something so trivial 2 years later...you need to find a hobby homie...

FastPips Modern fuel infected 450 makes more power than an old 500 2stroke. KTM SXF/XCF 450 is rated at 62 crank horsepower stock and no need to jet it.
FastPips An old 500 makes 60 plus HP and is completely different on how the power is put to the ground it would do awesome in the snow just like the dunes, love 4 and 2 strokes, so I'm not haten, but a sled has way more HP.

Great video... Up until the lame emding simply with text flashing up saying "snowmobile wins". The presenter should have come on after that. There should have been post race interviews of the guys with their feedback etc etc
I'm thinking they could make a snow track kit for dirt bikes with 2 skis up front which could be made to work much better than a single ski up front.

I have watched snowmobile racing for years. They are considerably faster than these snowbikes. I really can't believe they replaced snocross in the winter x games for these bikes! Way slower! Your talking a 600cc sled pushing 150 hp vs a 450 cc bike with maybe 70 at most!

Snow bikes use the factory sequential transmissions not cvt like a sled. That is their weak point.
It's really not even that fair. Sleds are so powerful and fast with a much greater top speed. That bike is really working to drive the track!

A snowmobile has way more horsepower and a snowbike is terrible on packed snow. Put those two machines on the mountain in deep powder and we'll see how many times the snowmobile needs to be dug out, while the snowbike just tears right through the powder. These are two completely different machines, and are not even fun to ride together on the mountain. Snowbikes and snowmobiles should not mix. Period!

It's a matter of power to weight.
Snow bikes are still new, and there are bugs to be worked yet..power, keeping the engine temp up where it should be, better gearing utilization, give it time.
They'll figure it out.
once again 2 cylinder 2 stroke vs 1 cylinder 4 stroke. Take Yamaha Phazer to make race fair or put snowbike kit on 700cc Maico.
Of course the snowmobile wins. If you’ve ever ridden both you know the snowbikes are sluggish in comparison.

450 snow bike weighs in give or take 350lbs and has 65hp
600r race sled weighs in around 400lbs and has 160+hp
Do the math....

A 450 4 stroke can't compare to a 800 2 stroke. The snowbike with the kit probably isn't coming in that far from the sled in the weight department. Also I have seen lots of people do some steep climbs with 2 guys on a sled, never seen two guys doubling in the mountains, nor do I think I will haha.
Take a Yamaha 700cc Superjet engine and mount that on the frame... You ride it, I'll watch!
Next time bring a single cylinder snowmobile just to see if their still able to beat the snow bike. Like the 400cc single cylinder Arctic Cat snowmobile.
Why? Comparing the best of snowmobiles vs the best of snowbike seems fair...
@@matisvanasse5905 450 isn't the biggest dirt bike you can put a snow track kit on. It's more like the minimum requirement. Try maico 700cc 2stoke or 80hp electric stark varg. And you can also use 2cyl adventure bikes.

@@vectraB97 Agreed for the stark or the 700 2 stroke but adventure bike aren't dirtbike.. But let's say we give them the best start possible, a 700 2 stroke turbo ~120hp. Still won't compete with 180hp of 850 turbo or even worst if you see a built mountain sled, 900 2 stroke turbo making 250hp while almost the same weight of a snowbike and 4 time the traction. Even worst for chutes build with at least 400hp 4 stroke build
@@matisvanasse5905 bikes are built for wheels. That's why they usually don't need that much hp. It rolls way easier than tracks. You can have 400 hp on a sled but a 160hp street bike will typically have higher top speed. 90hp on a snowmobile is next to nothing. 80hp on a dirt bike is insane power.
Still tho compared to the difference in power the snowbike wasn't that far behind
But if they switched routes I wonder who would win..

How is it even to have this mountain biker vs a pro at what he does? You have this bone stock 450 against a pro level snow sled. This really wasnt set up well for the bike.
It was for fun but no bike could have compete let be honnest.

I'm not trying to be mean but the part of the track the snowmobile got was a straight a way well the dirt bike had to do a lot of sharp turns thats not fair. The dirt bike would of won if the track was fair
Complete Kaze the track was the same for both. Only difference was the mx rider went under a tunnel first then the sno mobile racer went under one second. Plus the dirtbike has much better cornering abilities than the snow mobile.
