  • This video reviews 2 methods of icd 10 pcs book tabbing for your upcoming CIC or CCS inpatient coding exam or CDEI exam prep. As part of our PCS coding tips series we will also discuss some best practices and have a look at the appendices found in the 2021 ICD-10-PCS book from Optum.
Although ICD 10 PCS is not the only code set necessary for AHIMA's exam, strategic tabbing and a thorough dissection of the ICD-10-PCS book is always helpful in your CCS exam prep!

Hi Krashclifton! It's been 2 years already?! Oh my! Thankfully the basic idea of PCS tabbing doesn't change with the passage of time. :) Hope you will do great on the exam!

Hi Ann, you mentioned that AAPC allows handmade tabs. How about AHIMA? I heard they do not allow. Also does AAPC offers inpatient coding which involves PCS book? Thanks

Hi Jenik! So AHIMA is interesting because officially they don't allow tabs but I heard several people stating that the proctor didn't bat an eyelash and let them keep what they had. I had the same experience. My books were tabbed to the max and nobody said anything. I have to assume it depends on the proctor you get. As for the inpatient course: yes, AAPC does have one, it is called CIC. Certified Inpatient Coder. Please keep in mind though that if you want to do inpatient coding you will need the CCS credential as that is more respected and accepted than the CIC.

@@TheMedicalCodingGuild I'm prepping to begin studying for CCS. I combined both methods and I find it helpful already. Your videos will definitely be a study tool for me. I'm currently a profee coder.

@@shewhoisme3677 I see. Yes, the CCS is a huge shift from profee, but you already have a great knowledge base to start with. Let me know under the corresponding videos if you have questions!

Hi Swapna! No, I am not working for Optum at the moment. I did for a year or two in the past. I just like their books. :) You can apply with Optum online, they often need risk adjustment and other types of coders.
