      alaras I can’t really see it as GOO pact. The patron is more of a divine entity than an metaphysical being of horror/insanity from how it sounded in the story. But hey, it’s D&D, everything is flexible flavor wise.

      @@SilentZieth Oh have you read about angels in the bible? Divine Entity's are eldritch horrors. Trust me angels are actually pretty terrifying. There is a fine line between a Warlock and a Paladin.
    I once had a PC paladin who after barely surviving an encounter, lay in his hospital bed and pleaded with his deity for the power to rid the world of these evil forces.
    The deity came before him and spoke something along the lines of "when you swore your oath, it was not in service to me, but in service to those who use my power.
    You were merely pawn of an institution that seeks to control the masses.
    Take of my power, become my champion, and you shall have the strength to which you seek.
    All you must do, is serve me for all eternity, and rid this world of corruption and evil"
    He accepted, and arose the next morning a Paladin of Vengeance/Hexblade Warlock.
    In truth, there really isn't much of a difference between a Paladin and a Warlock. Both derive their powers from otherworldly sources. As such, there's no reason for why a Paladin couldn't make a pact with their Deity directly.

    Also funny thing I heard about patrons, it doesn't particularly matter what you do with the power you're given, the patron knows that when you die it's power shall be returned, so all that really matters is that you grow stronger so that they can get more power when you die, which means you could have a pact with devils and do only good things as all that matters is the power you'll give your patron when you die.

    Tieflings are one of my favorite races to play as. I especially like playing as a NG tiefling. Tiefling are made to be the subjects of supernatural fear, especially when their appearance (horns, tail, reddish skin, and eyes) is a constant reminder of their dark origin. My favorite character I've ever played was a tiefling bard (not the stereotypical bard that tries to get in everyone's pants) named Leucis Gelmori. He may take part in some light flirting, but no farther than that. His heart already belongs to a young (for an elf) wood elf woman whom he used to be in a party with in his backstory. She was the one who had given him the lute he carries with him now. He has a fondness for people and likes seeing the smiles on their faces.

      Got a tiefling of my own. Chaotic Neutral warlock with pact of the fiend. Her patron is all about chaos and keeping things from being stagnant, rather than trying to push good or evil higher up on the scale. For her, she views the world as a form of entertainment like we would watch TV. So long as she finds things interesting, she lends her power, and in this case, finds great enjoyment out of the antics my tiefling and her party gets in. Even if said tiefling is constantly trying and failing to be the voice of reason.

    My favorite race is Tiefling. But then I've always loved the demons and devils of D&D. And since most DMs won't allow me to be half-fiends, or full fiends, I have settled on Tiefling as a good alternative.

    • @craigtucker1290
      @craigtucker1290 4 роки тому +8

      The modern version of tieflings have sucked since ownership of D&D changed hands. In their PC version, tieflings were amazing in that they had no set set appearance or set powers. Instead, a player would roll on 3 tables for abilities, appearance, and special traits. If you had a good DM, you could work with them to make a specific tiefling that would be descended from a particular fiend. Aasimar had the similar but different table as well. This made both races more interesting than the stock race they became in later editions.

      @DoomsdayR3sistance 4 роки тому +4

      @@craigtucker1290 Just looking at that UA for Fiendish Options... one day, maybe, perhaps. But yeah things got pretty messed up in 4E.
      Notably going by XGTE, tieflings can be born of a devil parent and either a tiefling(7) or human(8) parent from a d8 roll from the "this is your life section". So Tieflings do not have to be of the Asmodeus bloodline anymore.

    • @craigtucker1290
      @craigtucker1290 4 роки тому

      @@DoomsdayR3sistance A tiefling back in the day was only ever a quarter-fiend. If a devil (Baatezu) had mated with a mortal, the result was a devil-kin, not a tiefling, just like if a demon had mated with a demon (Tanar'ri), the prodginey was either a cambion or an alu fiend. It was from these half breeds that tieflings were descended from.
      Things have been pretty messed up since WotC took over and started dumbing down things. It started when WotC removed consequences of player choices in 3rd edition. Not only that, but WotC has messed up the cosmology of the planes with the current version just being a disgrace and making absolutely no sense with the most implausible explanation of its current state. While I do like the quite a few of the mechanics with the current edition, the cosmology and the settings are a mess, though to be honest 4th edition ruined a few of those settings before 5th finished making a mess of the cosmology.

      @@craigtucker1290 I don't disagree, that teiflings can be essentially half-fiends thing does go a bit far but does mean at least that variety should be around again. However I can't say that 5E has been a bad thing (4E for sure) but 5E does feel like it has a lower bar for entry.
      As for the lore overall, yeah, it's a complete mess and even most of the WotC staff don't even seem to remember what is canon or not to the lore of Forgotten Realms these days.
      Also why is it impossible for two tieflings to have children (just a bit of lols when looking at this section in XGTE)

    • @craigtucker1290
      @craigtucker1290 4 роки тому

      @@DoomsdayR3sistance WotC has consistently retcon'd the history of the campaign settings to the point that it is not very believable and the settings lack that verisimilitude they once had.
      I do not like the idea of tieflings being half fiend since these are actually several different types of creatures that are half fiend like the Cambion, Alu-Fiend, Devil-Kin, and Demon Fey, according to canon. I remember this statement on what a tieflings is:
      "Well, when a half-bred fiend mates with a mortal, the result is a quarter-breed - a tiefling." Faces of Evil: The Fiends, page 96.
      That is canon on what a tiefling actually is while every half-bred fiend is something else with most being named. Allowing tieflings to be half-breeds is WotC retconing what actually was into something that it isn't and at the same time making it more simplified and not as diverse by making tieflings almost cookie cutter in appearance. At the same time, certain cross breed races have been lost like the Tanarukka, the Demon Fey, Devil-Kin, and the Fey Ri (the last two were optional as a PC playable race). Sure they have been mentioned and there might be some updates, but as WotC plods on, the richness of what was has been lost and canon all but forgotten.
      I liked the tables that were part of the randomness of the fiendish parent in that if someone wanted to create a tiefling specifically descended from a marilith, it was possible to pick certain traits that fit that lineage. This would require a competent DM willing to work with the player of course, but it did create some interesting characteristics and backstories. From canon, tieflings were capable of procreating, it was actually on one of the tables where the tiefling might be sterile (about 1 in 2000 tieflings cannot reproduce). Once again, retconing this to something else seems pointless, but someone felt like changing history for a reason.

    Lizardfolk have some really nice lore to run with and I adore their aesthetics. But my heart will always belong to kobolds.
    But this story was amazing in any case. For me, the touching part was not so much that he passed judgement but more that all of this, all his life originated from a mere coincidence surrounded by death and violence as greed and savagery clashed in his old home. They must have had some reeeeally good preachers to never have him wonder where his parents were, why no one else looked like him and so on.

    A 4e character of mine was Fray Tejon the gnome luchador-priest of Segojan Earthcaller. I modeled him on King from Tekken and his real life inspiration Fray Tormenta.
    He was a Brawler Fighter with the Ordained Priest heroic theme who was an orphan raised by the church of Segojan Earthcaller and became a priest (not a cleric though as he hadn't reached that part of the training yet) who found out the orphanage that raised him was facing financial trouble and was in danger of shutting down. So what's a strong, stout, and devout gnome to do? Why turn to prize fighting of course! So he won, and kept on winning, with all the money going to the orphanage naturally. All those "holy warrior" elective courses he had taken on his path to priesthood helped a lot, and he was a quick learner for the unarmed techniques used in the ring and even improved many of them such that he could pin those more than twice his size, he eventually became the unbeatable champion of the prize fighting circuit he was part of, so to spare the newcomers embarassment, and to get even more income to help even more children, he retired from prize fighting and became an adventurer.

    My favorites tend to be the planetouched ones, there's just something compelling to me about the multiverse being such a chaotic mess that sometimes people are just born with obvious signs of planar influence that in any other world would be prophets or chosen ones, but are really just normal people with a little weird magic.

    I like all playable reptiles and with an interesting background like this, Chuu is especially loveable. Accidentaly devouring the cursed hearth of a forgotten god. That seems like something only lizardfolk can happen. I hope the backstories of the other partymembers are as interesting as Chuus.

    Okay, so this brings me memories of my roommate's goofy World of Warcraft character back in the old days: Horsdouevres. He was a warlock, but he roleplayed the character as a paladin. He always talked in character, despite not being from an RP server. His hellfire was his consecrate. His fear was his "turn evil". His imp was actually his "Noble paladin steed", which he would promptly emote as sitting on and squishing.
    Out of character, the roommate talked of the character as being "trained wrong, as a joke" by some pranksters at Northshire Abbey.

    For a Pathfinder Planescape game I decided to take Lizardfolk in a different direction and came up with the premise of an enclave of Lizardfolk in the Outlands who had been influenced and nurtured by a Couatl into a civilization of peace and culture, who favored a simpler lifestyle but were not unsophisticated. They were capable of richer emotional response. Their lore stated that the Ancestral Mother was gifted seven eggs by the great Quet'Zhual, Lord of Feather and Fang. Each egg gave rise to one of the Seven Clans of the Xi-Couatl, the Couatl-Kin Lizardfolk, who call themselves Atzo'e-Ma or Spawn of the Seven. The Atzo'e-Ma have feathered crests and further tufts of feathers at joints and tailtip, and each clan is distinguished by a distinct color of the rainbow. Some develop rich multicolored crests, which mark them as destined to become Questing Knights of Quet'Zhual. I played one such, Naxtlacotl of the blue-crested Za'Extli-Ma clan, a Paladin of Xymor with his bonded mount triceratops named Chotaka'e or 'Threefold Piercer of Falsehood'. In keeping with the Couatl theme their aesthetic is very Mesoamerican in style, which always looks good on lizards. So Naxtlacotl ran around wielding a giant two-handed Macuahuitl alongside an intelligent living bulldozer with the temperament of a happy puppy. I need to do more with the Atzo'e-Ma and their marshy home in the Sea of Trees.

    My personal favorite race in Pathfinder is the Catfolk. They are very much like humans, but even more varied. The best and the worst are found among them. I have a Catfolk character in a currently-running campaign, and her story is still being written. CW: fictional descriptions of assault and torture with a focus on overcoming adversity
    Baz'neh Verasii was born to a doting, loving mother and father. She was born with tawny fur, a brown brush tip to her narrow tail, and a single bright green eye with her left socket being empty. She had an elder brother who she very much looked up to, and quickly became something of a tomboy. What her brother learned in the use of the blade, he taught her as well. However, her family scorned the use of magic because they saw it as an abuse of those who came before them. Now, this wasn't an issue for the other three, but when Baz'neh cut herself when she was practicing with her brother she instinctively healed it with magic. It was then that she was given two options by her parents. Give up or be cast away. She decided to give it up, but this lasted only a short while. Her hand was forced. She was severely wounded in a scrap that left her father dying in the street. She had no choice but to heal him as best she could, stop her own bleeding, and flee while leaving a path of tears behind her.
    Of course, she knew nothing of survival, being from one of the civilized families, but she adapted as Catfolk do and learned quickly. However, she was captured by an awful dwarf and forced into slave labor. He had many of all non-dwarf races, the boys shoved daily into mines, and the girls made to work the farms. She constantly drew her master's ire for patching up the wounds on her fellow slaves, because she was keeping more hungry mouths around than needed be and therefore was cutting into his profits. She refused to let up, a fire in her belly hotter than the forges his kind so skillfully used. As a result, her punishments were particularly brutal, the worst being when he sealed her in a wooden box with only her head exposed and then buried it. She was stuck there for a week because nobody else knew where she was and was told to extricate herself. That's exactly what she did. Her master was shocked to find her hobbling back, emaciated, exhausted, but alive and with a furious expression on her face. She ate her ration, rebuilt her strength, and was put back to work the next day. Eventually while out foraging, she chanced upon a pure white Rabbitfolk, similar to a Catfolk with different bonuses and a more Eastern flavor.
    This rabbit was named Kouneli Yojimbo, and together they formulated an escape plan. On the day, however, she was just about to leave when she stopped. She couldn't just leave everyone else behind. After some convincing, she did wind up leaving. To this day she knows she condemned all of her compatriots to death, something that weighs heavily on her mind and still thinks about daily. All the practice healing she had, however, had made her something of an accomplished Cleric at the tender age of eight. The two girls were inseparable after that, grew up together, traveled the continent, and eventually, Baz'neh entered into a pact with Aleria, the Lawful Good goddess of gardeners, healers, and lovers. She swore to minimize suffering as much as she could, and was given Aleria's sigil, two meadowlarks perched together in the silhouette of a heart. The intrepid duo just did odd jobs in major cities, though Kouneli had a penchant for thievery by taking things that nobles would never realize were missing like small amounts of money or a jewel or two that could be sold.
    One day 18 years after their escape they found themselves invited to a party at a large tavern. They sat down at a large table and ate great food, sharing stories with other adventurers. Sitting across from her, however, was a hunter named Aglum who specialized in escaped slaves. Of course, they kept Baz'neh's childhood a secret for the moment. They were invited to sleep in the tavern, each party was given their own room. When Baz'neh woke, however, she was not where she went to sleep. She was in a sunless, windowless room with that same hobgoblin hunter and her companion nowhere to be seen. After a challenging fight against some undead ghouls, the two were reunited, and Kouneli informed everyone trapped down there with them that they were in the Undermountain, a haven for skullduggery and lawlessness. Now, the two as well as Aglum, a human archer named Alison, a human warlock called Dharsa, and a half-orc barbarian named Jaakuna must find their way back out of their predicament with no foreknowledge of how they got there or the route out.

And really, Chuu is doing exactly what he wanted anyway: undead need to be destroyed, integrity is its own reward, don't lie, cheat or steal, and pursue justice. He's like the child that wants One Thing more than anything else, and he got it and more. Sure, Chuu might not be exactly what that God had in mind both in terms of personality and in seeing his ultimate goal done, but the spirit of it is intact. And really, could he have asked for a more devout follower or contract partner?

    I don't know about a "favorite" race in D&D so much as "the race of the week" for whatever Character build intrigues me the most at the time... Half-elves tend to be "stand-by's" or "go-to's" when I'm without an inspiration to anything else... BUT I'm just as likely to play almost anything else. It's particularly likely when I can add to a Party who's head-count reads like a really bad joke.

    Great character! A warlock who sets out on a redemption path...redeeming his god/patron, not himself. He needs no redemption, because he's just too guileless for evil intentions to ever take root. This character would be great even if he wasn't of an odd race to be either paladin or warlock, as lizardfolk care little for the planes and their denizens. Almost a new class: Palidlock or Waridin.

    They are not as simple as made out to be - they are, instead, not complex. They are not heartless, and I disagree with Volo's guide - they can feel a full range, but that range is muted by hard living and a sense of practiccality.

Plus wouldn’t he gain some wisdom/intelligence as time progressed, with him fighting what is a stereotypical warlock and showing the world what he really is, in a way maybe...huh what if at levels 5 10 15 and 20 he hit story crossroads, where he would become more knowledgeable about what and who he is, making choices on which path he followed. Where if at the end of level 20 his final choice if he choose all the right choices, the being he became connected to would either become a god, or a true devil?

    • @levikarkiainen331
      @levikarkiainen331 4 роки тому +6

      This did come up and it was basically described that the reason the artifact couldn't be destroyed wasn't because it was durable, it was because it always regenerates.
      It can be physically damaged and destroyed but it just always comes back.
      However, this also meant that Chuu always had a belly full of meat and he could never starve.
      I had to cut a lot of Corners to make the story shorter than a full-length novel. But there's a lot more details to it and explanations as to why I'm old God of order and justice is considered Unholy and even evil but along with Chuu cannot be destroyed by the light.
      There's a lot to it but... I never really got to play very much with him. Just a campaign I myself ran which made Chuu sadly more of an NPC than a character.

    But my top choice of these are Fetchlings. In essence, humans who were once enslaved in the Plane of Shadow, and grew to adapt to the environment.
