Hall & Oates- 70's Scenario

- This song is from the 1974 "War Babies" album written by Daryl Hall. In my opinion, this was one of those albums that Daryl Hall and John Oates stepped completely outside the box. They brought in a musician that played over 40 instruments and was a magician at production. His name was Todd Rundgren. Just listen to Rundgren's guitar work and backup vocals! To me, this song is the "gem" from this outstanding, obscure album. Enjoy!!
In bed sittin' and reading by the T. V. light
Stay away from the window, thunder and lighting
And the rain, the rain keeps fallin' down
That's something that hasn't changed
Yeah, there's something inside me, it's quiet when it rains
At the end of the rainbow, there ain't no pot of gold
And the light in the morning, hardly ever shows
Ain't no easy living, everybody knows
And it's all around us........
70's Scenario
She called me a prisoner, in a prison of the mass
She said acceptance from the future, is freedom from the past
and I laugh, and say "that's alright"
Things really ain't that tough
As long as I'm still able, to turn the T.V. off
At the end of the rainbow, there ain't no pot of gold
And the light in the morning, hardly ever shows
Ain't no reason living, everybody knows
And it's all around us........

70's Scenario
I remember listening to this song during a period of emotional turmoil in my life in the 70s. The first time I heard it was on a rainy cold winters evening when a thunderstorm was moving through the area. It seems so relevant like it was speaking to me. As long as you're able turn the TV off.
Me Too!! It's raining all day in Denver and I needed to hear this. I usually play this in October..MJ
"As long as I'm still able to turn the TV off" What an empathetic lyric.
The whole album is just superb but this just gets me, tears me up ...
Masterpiece! Look up " how to write a hit!!"
this gem just stirs everything up inside of me and then it's peace.... that bass though.... ♥

Hi from England
Fantastic album
A Todd Rundgren production with most of his early Prog-Rock band Utopia. John Seigler bass (pre Kasim Sulton) Willie Wilcox drums, Todd guitar & Don York keyboards. Killer stuff ...
chic, cool R&B.
A beautiful, crystal voice of Daryl when he was young.❤️🎵
シックでクールなR&B
ダリルの若い頃の美しい
澄んだ歌声❤️🎵
VERY UNDERRATED SONG
I bought this album in Germany while stationed there in the early '80's. Pure Rundgren genius...would put on headphones, listening to it in the dark. Close your eyes and it sends you places...
I was right there with ya Pard!
I love every track on this album
I’m still listening to this masterpiece
There is 70's hall and oates then there's 80's. They did their best work in the 70's
These lyrics will go down in History!!!!
Absolutely right, great album great producer.
Other worldly
Our kind of "SOUL"!!!
Shreds my brain then puts it back together better.
I totally agree. I still have my vinyl but I manage to find a limited edition on CD that Atlanta Records released back in the nineties. Todd Rundgren makes this whole album special. Thanks for posting.
I still have my copy on wax plus like you bought the 50th Atlantic Records CD with original cover & songs.
Apart from Todd Rundgren, I think Daryl has already showed his vocal ability, smooth as "Thai Silk". Not only this song but loves whole this album.
The whole album is a gem. Probably my favorite.
Superb song from the best album ever made
todd rundgren production makes this album a masterpiece.
this is a great album. brings me back. this was produced by Todd Rundgren
This iz a Super Classic Album....1 uv My FAVORITES.
Stickey bass line... This shit is so fkn great...
And it was all around us....
"All You Want Is Heaven" and "Time's Up (Alone Tonight)" won me over!
Just heard this song on the radio. For the first time. I love it
When was THIS on the radio?? Very obscure song, what station?? It's impossible..
FANTASTIC!
Yeah, there's something inside me, it's quiet when it rains
This album should've been called emotionalism. What a piece of beauty
Class. That is it. That is all 🖒
Even though i have half this album on a Hall And Oates compilation i made. I ordered the wounded bird issue of the cd and it arrived today. This is such a great album and so different from anything in the H&O catalogue.
When Todd's Utopia kicks in it just slays me!
Todd's influence is clearer on this song than maybe any other on the album. not only musically, but vocally, Daryl sounds just like Todd here.
Andrew G. Yea, I noticed that too! Wonder if Todd dubbed his voice over Daryl’s!
Think it's the other way around actually. Daryl is older than Todd and Todd said he learned about singing from producing Daryl.
If you check the credits, you'll find about 2/3 of the players are from Utopia. Timing is interesting, too - smack between Something/Anything & A Wizard/A True Star. Listening through War Babies, you can already hear some of the things Todd was cookin' up for AWATS
I'll be getting this album next. I have many but not this one yet. I also want "X-Static"
As long as I'm still able, to turn the T.V. off...
YOU ARE MISSING FUCK ALL ON TV ....IT`S FOR SHEEP.
My Theme Song!
Portable Radio The Woman Comes and Goes !
In the piano intro (and then throughout) you can hear that DH had already absorbed some jazz chords, i.e. "4th stacks," which aren't hard to play but have to be learned (from, say, Herbie Hancock). I doubt that is Todd playing that. Later, Daryl showed on "I'm in a Philly Mood," total mastery of 4th stacks, and I know he played that part.
I don't know what the song means. But no finer first verse was ever written in the history of rock. Cool totally cool.
To me, it's about the hangover from Watergate, the end of the Vietnam war and the resignation of Nixon. Awesome song !
Wounded Bird is a great company for finding obscure music. Matter of fact, they have taken my advice and got the rights to release to a few albums that were very rare and out of print.
Un chef d'oeuvre que cette chanson !
Is there a live version of this anywhere? I would love to see this live, still no luck :(
its so hard to find anything of theirs old on youtube, it sucks because this is my favorite album of theirs
@@99Doogs Yeah, I personally think H2O, X-Static, or Private Eyes are their best releases, maybe even in that order. War Babies is definitely one of their best 70's album. I just wish they did more album tracks in concert, especially in the later 70's.
I saw them a half dozen times in the 70's and they did play this in concert a few times for me so that is where you might find it
@@tonyc8908 Any idea if they're hidden in UA-cam somewhere?
@@nickdidomizio7328 I searched but nothing...however, there is a Hall and Oates live 1973 55 minute concert that is excellent. the version of "she's gone" is fantastic. Try their website
I've got a lot of "obscure" vinyl, but not "War Babies". I'm an eclectic. Got "Abandoned Luncheonette", "Runt", etc...
the boy taught to become a man ..... not ready to go but must ...... not understanding what will be waiting on the other side of the rainbow ....... that shows up everyday in a tropical place ....... trying to do what I was taught .....but out witted by the locals ..... that understood how to live that life .... looking at the rainbow every day .......
Yes they are i have War Babies and the first Mama's Pride album from 1975. You said they have taken your advice what do you mean you emailed them and suggested some albums to reissue and they did it. In that case i would love to see Bobby Whitlock-One Of A Kind 1975 & Rock Your Sox Off-1976 issued on cd.
That's what I did. I just emailed them. The got the rights to issue Ellen Foley's "Nightout" CD along with Randy Meisner's first two solo CD's. If you could find them, they were going for well over a $100 on eBay. Hit them up!!
BTW, if you're on Facebook, do a search for Bobby Whitlock. He posts great stuff pertaining to what he's doing now plus a lot of info on Derek And The Dominos. Check him!
can anyone share their thoughts about what this song means , I have my own opinion , just wanted to hear others?
How important is this song Dennis?!
