Want to buy some movies? Here’s $15 in free credit to buy movies on WhatNot! www.whatnot.com/invite/filmsathome
When it come to anime some is worth a lot depends on the studio and the special editions.
I remember when Apocalypto went for $80-120. Then a reissue came out and they're worth $15-20 now. Be patient unless it's a movie or edition you absolutely love
I got it for cheap, fairly recently... I must have missed the period when it was $80, but I don't track these things closely.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 It was out of print for over a decade. I believe it was reissued in 2020. A 4k would be cool someday
I picked it up for $3 at a thrift store in 2022.
Are people really needing to collect this film?
@@robertt9342 $3 in 2022 makes sense. I think people paid more for it just as a fomo thing, because the movie itself is just okay
Just like Lawrence of Arabia 4k.
The fact that Netflix didn't even bother to put HDR grading on the Stranger Things S01 4k set says all you need to know about Netflix.
Dude, the UHDs had plain ol' Dolby Digital and the INCLUDED BDs had TrueHD! Wtf????
This may have more to do with Target than Netflix. They sure did spare no expense on the VHS style case and slip cover though.
I have a pristine copy of Morbius on dvd
Even pristine copies of Morbius are desecrated
That's not even worth anything 😂
I worked at Target when those Stranger things sets went on clearance. Some copies even made it down to like $2 before finally got rid of them. Crazy to see what they are worth now.
Bought Them both and still own them. Netflix is terrible in releasing their properties glad I bought them when I did.
Fortunately I picked those up at the time also but really annoying they have not given season 3 and 4 the same treatment on physical media.
My Target never has anything good on clearance. They still have 8 year old sports games for $20
@@davidstring8301 Man that bites, the Target closest to me Northridge Ca. never restocks it actually is very frustrating 😢
I actually picked up two of them for about 5 bucks each. The copy that looked like a VHS tape and has a really bad ass poster inside
I went to an estate sale last year and ended up getting a lot of these OOP titles for like $3 each. I was screaming to myself lol
With Disney’s new deal with Mill Creek, I’d expect to see a fair amount of the Anchor Bay releases of FOX titles as they’ve said the deal only includes previously-released titles. So, films like Dutch, Lucas, and Airheads will probably get re-released by Mill Creek.
The Mouse-Mill Ck deal is only for distribution. Mill Ck will not be releasing any Disney titles under the deal.
I bought all those blu rays years ago when they first came out...Had no idea are worth that kind of money now
One of my favorite movies "The Fall" from 2008 is a visual masterpiece and I was looking at buying a copy for a friend. I was shocked to see that it's going for over $80 nowadays. Sadly it's not streaming anywhere either.
Owned it since day one. One of my all time favorites
My library has the blu-ray and I'm so grateful because it instantly made it to my top ten
That’s a great movie, ended up scoring a used blu-ray copy at Disc replay for 7.99, and it was practically brand new.
I've been waiting for that movie to drop in Price for years but It only keeps going up
Wowwww!!! Amazing film, I had no idea it was valuable. Got it myself from my local video rental store for 5 bucks ❤
Very helpful! Would love a part 2 at some point!
Ernest Scared Stupid is another oddball one
Fairly common on DVD but the BR re-issue was a Mill Creek release that now goes for upwards of $50 despite being a barebones budget release like you'd find for $5 in a Wal-Mart bargain bin
Another one worth mentioning is Galavant, the musical TV show. I bought the DVDs new for $30. A few years later, it's $140 on ebay.
I have Airheads, Dogma, and Sleep Away Camp with sleeve in my collection. I also have a couple other oop bluray titles that go for upwards of $200. Those titles are Dutch (1991), and The Chipmunk Adventure (1987). My copy of Dutch is sealed. Anways, great video as always. Keep up the great work.
Yeah, Dogma has crazy prices! I ended up buying a bootleg copy. I don't really like doing that but I will for certain ones. I sold my Splash blu ray for £118 & bought a bootleg one for £9.
Once Upon a time in America varies from $30-60. Got it at walmart for $5! Same with Sling Blade
Yeah I sold my sling blade for $25 but there is no way I would sell once upon a time in America the producers cut because it's one of my favorite movies
I had to pay about $30 for Sling Blade a few months ago, but IMO it's a masterpiece level movie, so I didn't hesitate.
@@hxhdfjifzirstc894 it is a great movie but for some reason it creeps me out
I scored a copy of the Black Christmas remake blu-ray right before they went out of print. Needs a 4K Scream Factory release!
Hey man I enjoy your channel and just wanted to give you some constructive feedback if you wouldn't mind. Can you keep the image of the movie you're talking about on for the duration that you talk about it? It makes it a lot easier for thumbnail scrolling, passive viewing etc. Also, It looks like the lighting is a little off today (maybe too orange?) Idk but it just looks kind of odd on this video. Anyway, hope this helps the channel.
I have the 1st Sleepaway Camp on Blu-ray. I got it in a box full of movies a friend gave me for helping him clean out his garage.
Arrow’s limited edition of Reanimator is supposedly going for a decent amount of money now. My most prized DVD that’s OOP (unfortunately I couldn’t get the Blu-ray edition at the time) is my Criterion digipack of The Third Man, which is also one of my favorite films.
Also the society set is even more rare.
@@GCBaXia Thanks for letting me know guys. I have both of them, but it would be hard to part with either.
I have a few of these and funny to see what ends up being hard to find. Personally won't sell them and gives me good reason why I still keep buying physical and keeping my copies.
Off the top of my head my best pawn shop finds are Once Upon a Time in America and Sling Blade. $2 each
I have that Black Christmas on dvd. Had it since it was released.
Yeah, the Anime market is insane. Specially japanese market exclusives that were released in limited numbers.
I also remember Stranger Things sets on clearance at Target, but they were Blu-ray/DVD. Wish I found 4K
Haven’t watched yet, but I noticed Airheads in the thumbnail and wanted to share that I literally couldn’t even find this movie to rent on Prime!
I have E.T. on VHS still in the plastic wrap. It's probably not worth much, but I kept it just because it is still shrink-wrapped. Lol
This was interesting thanks, the only one I have from this list are Dogma and the Sleepaway Camp movies.
I recently found Dawn of the Dead from George Romero Blu-ray Anchor Bay release for like $3 at a pawn shop
9 to 5 on blu-ray sells for crazy money too. Glad I have mine!
I bought Dogma brand new for $10 years ago. It insane how much these OOP blu rays are.
Others to look out for:
Robot Jox
No Man’s Land (1987)
License to Drive
Hound of the Baskervilles (Twighlight Time)
Seven Ups (Twighlight Time)
Rapid Fire (Twighlight Time)
No Holds Barred
The Killer
Hard Boiled
Face To Face (Kino)
Blacula Double Feature
Madhouse (1974)
The Mummy (Hammer)
I have the sealed Seve Ups from this list.
The greatest weapon is the control of information to control what people think.
Buy physical (DVDs, Blue Rays) video media before it is gone forever.
With the anime point. The way studios know what is popular is my merchandise, including the DVD/Blu-Ray sets. They already upmarket the price and have semi limited runs.
That along with some rights issues many shows that aren't popular climb the ranks in pricing.
Terrific video Jeff! Very informative.
I find it funny that The Ringer staring Johnny Knoxville is like $130.
You’re kidding. I’m going to my local pawn shop tomorrow, they’ve had a copy there for about six months now but I don’t like the movie so I never bought it
@@Tomhyde098 let us know if you get it!
I bought the Stranger Things season 2 4k and paid $19.99 for it at a second hand store. I'm glad to have it and hope the rest of the seasons are released.
Sexy Beast on Blu-ray falls into this category. Super underrated movie too.
Honestly, I saw that in the theater and it totally sucked. I should have asked for my money back.
I missed out on Dutch when it came out. All of the other OOP titles outside a few Shout titles, I've been randomly been able to find at used stores which is always exciting to find.
I like director Peter Bogdanovich (Targets, Last Picture Show, Paper Moon) almost bought At Long Last Love for $20 on Amazon
I have the Black Christmas (2006) blu-ray in my collection. I knew it was rare, but didn’t know how sought after it is.
Never Say Never Again is usually more than $75. The one I wish I bought was Pink Panther shout factory set. That got crazy quickly…$250-$300
Others I am aware of that I own are Dutch with Ed O'Neill. Taxi with Jimmy Fallon, Stuck on You with Matt Damon, and horror wise Darkness Falls
I picked up ST2 4k set on eBay imported (im from uk) a few years ago and it was pretty hard to buy even then and it was even pretty expensive back then. I'm just glad I got it when I did but I wish the other seasons will be released on 4k
Nice video. Thanks for doing the leg work!
The only one I have is Airheads, which I imported from the US here in Australia about 10 years ago haha
I actually have the Sleepaway Camp blus with slipcovers and Slumberparty Massacre 2 and 3 with slip. Bought them all when they were first released
Hate to be that guy, but Slumber Party Massacre II/III didn’t come with a slip 😉 I just picked it up myself for 85 bucks. I was happy with that purchase.
The Fall (2006) I swear went out of print a month after I bought it.
And holy crap, I have both seasons of Strangers Things unopened!!
Well it looks like im going to thrift stores and goodwill for a while!😅 You should make a video about rare VHS tapes because its crazy on eBay with the prices
You ok? Or is the color settings on your camera off?
Color was a little off. I am tired though. The tired dad eye bags are real.
@@JeffRauseo I figured. Hope you get some sleep soon!
@@JeffRauseoyou are literally turning into an orange fruit like in that 1 movie where people slowly transform into fruits
My Super Ex-Girlfriend was released through Fox’s deal with Anchor Bay, which when it expired, it went OOP hence the high price. Same situation with Lucas and Airheads.
Dogma, I got lucky. Found it at a swapmeet back in 2018 for $2 and immediately snapped it up. In some ways, I feel bad for the seller as he left so much money on the table but what a great find for that price.
I wish I had gotten At Long Last Love when it was available. Same with Stranger Things 2.
Free Willy is a weird case. It came out and went out of print fairly quickly, which is why the price went up fairly quickly. I initially got rid of the DVD ahead of the Blu-Ray release but never got my hands on it. By the time I was ready to buy it, it was already OOP. I since reacquired the DVD and have no regrets. At least for now.
Aah, been looking for a new podcast. Thanks.
I was able to pick up Dogma recently for $70. I would love Airheads on Blu Ray, they really need a re-release.
I have that Airheads bluray but it's a bare bones disc. Hopefully if it gets a re-release they port over the bonus stuff from the DVD.
I’ve got airheads on blu ray and I wouldbt sell it no matter how much it’s worth lol
My Slumber Party 2/3 Blu-ray has been gathering dust since I picked it up new at a horror con in 2017. I finally got around to watching it at the beginning of 2023, wasn't a fan and sold it on eBay for $75 before fees. I guess the buyer got a great deal!
Now checking my copies of Dogma and Dead Alive...
I’m not shocked at the Godzilla Blu-ray being expensive, those movies have a history of once they go OOP jumping up in price tremendously. The Sony DVDs of a handful of Showa era films where selling for like $200 at one point.
Great info! Much appreciated! 🙏
Great video. Haha I had about half of these you mentioned and sold them all at the Berkeley flea a half dozen years ago for 2 to 3 bucks a pop before I moved to Japan permanently and started rebuilding my collection here.
Maybe it falls under the collectors column but it did have a theatrical release and was at least to me a big movie in the mid 2ks The Fall by Tarsem was the movie I regret most letting go because I can't even buy it again here in Japan it's going for about 300 in USD I really just miss that movie it is one of my favorites.
For some reason, the Lawrence of Arabia 4K Steelbook is nuts right now.
When a blu-ray is too expensive I can easily settle for the DVD version. Thanks for the list.
Oh wow! I have all the Godzilla 2 packs! Awesome video!
Sleepaway Camp is so good, I still have my old Red Cross DVD Collection and never bothered to upgrade to Blu Ray. Shame.
Thanks man! I have a literal mountain of movies I appreciate this. Gonna get to it 😅
I have that 2006 Black X-mas blu. Its from 2008 and was only distributed in Canada. I definitely found it a step up from the US DVD. I also have the Canadian blu of Martyrs.
Been trying to get Martyrs for years, but the price was to high back a few years ago. May pick a European copy if it has English subtitles.
@@mikefisher2673 Umbrella Entertainment released a new edition a few months back. It's Region A friendly and can be found for a reasonable price. I picked up the limited edition (limited to 250 copies) from them despite already owning the Canadian release, but a standard edition has also been released. Both the Canadian edition and Umbrella's edition use the same film transfer. Google "umbrella entertainment martyrs" and it should be one of the first results that shows up.
Fun list! Now I just need a bunch of old VHS's to become the trend again!
I do have both of the Stranger Things 4K sets but I would love to have Dogma on Blu-ray.
I don’t have most of these, because they’re just not part of my desired collection, except for Deadalive, the Godzilla, double feature, and Stranger Things, which I picked up because it was on sale. There’s also quite a few movies I just won’t buy until there’s a 4K version. Thanks for the list.👍🏼
That Black X-Mas was a Canadian blu ray release. It wasn't for sale in U.S. stores. I bought it online on Amazon Canada for $9.99 when it came out. The movie Fido on blu ray was the same way....Canadian release. Try finding that one !
Recently i`ve gotten into buying the HMV Premium Collection , most were on sale for 2 for £15 (now 2 for £25 there normal price) some of the out of print titles are going on eBay for crazy money.
So, I've just checked my college DVD/blu disc binder and I have a loose Dogma Blu Ray. I'm not finding any listings for either just the case or for the disc alone, anyone know if the loose disc would be of any interest?
You should a part 2, I’m sure there’s plenty of oop movies that we don’t know about
I was able to get that Godzilla double feature for $5.99 at Disc Replay recently, and the case and discs were like brand new.
Also got the Blacula double feature for $6 there as well.
Long ago I found a copy of "Thursday" on DVD (for a reasonable price) when it was selling for $100+ on ebay. Then some enterprising ebayer began manufacturing counterfeit DVD copies and selling them which gutted the used market price and help motivate the rights holders to dust off their master and release a proper Blu-Ray. My advice is don't buy media as an investment. Sell anything you don't/no longer care about for a tidy profit when the opportunity arrives. But, never make an unreasonable purchase for hope of a future windfall--collectable media pricing is extremely fickle. Buy only what you love and stream/Redbox the rest. Thanks again for another informative video.
I was stationed in Japan around 1990 and (this is CD, not video) got a copy of Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young’s 4 Way Street. When I got back to the US, I found that they had not put out a pricing in the US. Of course, in the mid 90’s, there was not the internet we have now, but I’m sure it would have gotten a lot, if I could only find interested buyers. Later, they did release it here in the US, and my dreams of making money vanished. I still enjoy the music, though, so all is not lost.
My point is, with the ability to take advantage of out of print DVD/Blu-rays, you need to act quickly or they may rerelease your movie and you’ll be stuck with a once valuable movie that is now just something that you can enjoy.
I’m kicking myself for not picking up Can’t Hardly Wait on Blu-Ray when it came out in 2018 from Mill creek. Love that movie and now it’s going for $50-$60 bucks and very hard to find.
I never knew Dead-alive was ever released on Blu-ray...
I have the DVD. Would love to have a blu-ray
Godzilla vs Biollante and the the double pack that you showed really hurt me when I decided to collect all the Godzilla films. Turns out I was a year too late for the double pack (not sure when Biollante went out of print) and it is so annoying seeing all the other films lined up with those three movies being DVD not to mention the dub is the only option when watching. I hope one day they'll re-release them on blu-ray.
As far as finding out about something in my collection becoming expensive I don't know of any other than them being expensive when I bought them. I guess the only thing I can think of that really expensive (all on DVD as there are no Blu-rays would be the He-Man and She-Ra sets that when you put all the box sets together makes a mural of Castle Grey Skull, Snake Mountain and whatever the Hordak's base is called; I am missing The New Adventures of He-Man Vol 2 box as that is super mega rare I only saw one listing of that and it was hundreds of dollars. I also have all three Volumes of the 2002 He-Man series and Gargoyles season 2 Vol 1 is quite pricey. The Simpsons season 6 box seems to be rare and is quite pricey if you can find the correct box as most will give you the homer head which completely clashes with all the other box sets and is cheaply made which is why they later came out with a set that is like the others but there aren't as many from what I can tell.
As for video games I have a few that have become expensive. Kid Icarus Uprising(3DS case and manual), Metroid Prime Trilogy(Wii case and all inserts), not a game but related; The Art of Ratchet & Clank book and all six issues of Ratchet & Clank comic. Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem (GC in case and all inserts), and my most expensive game is probably Godzilla for the PS4. Technically the Skylanders series is my most expensive as I have most of the characters and Lego Dimensions though I don't have that many of the figures due to it being Lego so they are already a bit pricey but I mostly wanted the Simpsons, Dr. Who and Portal packs anyway.
Biollante is a weird deal. For whatever reason, it's rights are not tied to the overall TriStar deal that the Heisei era films otherwise had. I had Biollante on VHS, and I think maybe it only ever had a Japanese DVD release. This is just from my recollection. I'm sure if you look up a Kaiju website or channel they might discuss it.
@@thechairman74 Biollante is currently in the middle of rights hell. No one knows who has US distribution rights.
@@ZodsSnappedNeck I don't think anyone has the rights, and it's been that way for decades.
yep, me too. I'm only missing Biollante.
Very cool! I have 3 of these, good to know their value.
Glad you mentioned anime blu rays. I have a decent collection size wise but value wise they command some series only high prices.
I picked two expensive hobbies; anime and movie collecting 😆
I live in the UK, but have a US/Region One DVD release of Dogma. It is the extended edition that was not made available in the UK.
Great video! Another one to look out for, that I just found for a pretty good price, is The Velvet Vampire(shout!)
I own the 2006 Black Xmas Blu-ray. Had no idea it was so scarce now. But I suppose I’ve never went to look again for it since I purchased it.
Yeah a lot of the FUNimation titles have been going Out of Print due to Crunchyroll buying them out and even before then some titles were discontinued because the their licensing expired. The ones that we look for are the Dragon Ball Yellow Dragon Boxes Sets and the collector Anniversary sets like the new YuYu Haksuho that was released last month and is now on there for over $300 to $1000.
Those dragon boxes are expensive, but also one of the best ways to watch DBZ. The Orange bricks dvds are artificially in widescreen and are DNRd and even new special edition blurays they put out are 4:3, but also DNRd. I opted for the Funi singles for the Faulconer score.
Crunchyroll didn't buy Funimation out. Sony bought out Funimation first, then brought Crunchyroll so they could drop the Funimation name. Now, Sony is gutting all the M rated titles in their catalogs. Seven seas for me!
Picked up dogma for $3 in a pawn shop years ago. Still have the DVD too, which I think goes for about $30
I love Free Willy. Such a cool 90's family movie with a great soundtrack!
Thanks for the video. I have Dogma and first 2 Human Centipede Blu-Rays in my collection.
Omg on that stranger things….at my local Goodwill someone most likely Target dumped around 100 copies of sealed season 1 4K Blu-ray sets. I bought like 5 and they were only like a Buck each because the manager wanted them gone because there was a huge backlog of movies he needed out the back room.
Black Christmas (2006) got a 3 disc edition with all the different cuts in Germany last year
Lol, I threw away the packaging for that _Stranger Things 2_ 4K set and put the discs in a regular Viva case...always hated that stuff. They're not quite as outrageous as the ones you covered here, but I'm still irritated that _Silver Streak_ and _The Thirteenth Floor_ are $50-$60 and OOP. That's a bit much for me for a single film, but they're (relatively) awful discs on top of it. Still hoping those two make a comeback at some point so I can at least get them for a reasonable price because I love those titles.
Carpool on DVD is really hard to find now
I have a full set of Godzilla that I would never sell but worth noting Godzilla vs Biollante also out of print and worth a significant amount
In summer 2022 I bought the first print Blu-ray box set for Adventure Time. It was around $220 then. Later the most recent print went out of production, so there’s no way to get the whole series on Blu-ray other than secondhand. The first print box set is going for $600+ now.
Criterion blu-ray of Rosemary’s Baby is another one that’s been out of print for a while. Kills me that I don’t have that one considering it’s one of my all time favorites.
I see that getting a 4K for sure. Plus When criterion titles go out of print it’s usually because someone else has a license or the license lapsed, so someone else can purchase it.
@@JeffRauseo It would be interesting if it got a new 4K. With the director essentially being in exile, would we get a “Director’s Approved” transfer or will Criterion supervise their own? I feel like rereleasing it at all will be met with controversy regardless.
@@JeffRauseo yeah I’m just holding out for the day it gets announced on 4k. I have the standard Paramount blu-ray so I’m content with that until the time hopefully comes. Could look really amazing on 4K if it ever happens.
Damn. I have the Criterion Rosemarys Baby. Good to know!
Criterion Rosemary has been dropping in price lately
My wife “accidentally “ threw out my beloved Halloween box set from shout factory a few years back. Still haven’t forgiven her for it. Watch over your collection like a hawk.
Divorce her
I had just bought a new copy of Dogma (dvd), while in a Walmart about a month ago! I was shocked, and only paid $16.99 for it!
Found the Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah/ Mothra Battle for Earth double feature at my local used store for $8!! Thanks for the heads up, Jeff!
Wow congrats man! That was quick. Good profit there if you sell
Several movies you’ve listed, I’m happy to own, and I bought most of them on release day:
Dogma
Dead Alive
Airheads
Stranger Things Season 2 4K
Sleepaway Camp Trilogy w/Slips
There are a couple more $100 plus titles to note that I own:
Freaked
Hellraiser: Deader
Dutch
I sold a lot of dvds about 15 years ago thinking digital was “it”. I kick myself all the time for that….
I bought the German Mediabook for Black Christmas (2006) for $55. It includes the Unrated cut, European Cut, and the R rated cut.
I got Free Willy, Dead Alive, Dogma, Airheads, and both Stranger Things 4K VHS boxes. Didn’t know any of them were rare or valuable. Wish I had got the Sleep Away Camps and Black Christmas.
I know hundreds of folks who have every one of those films. In fact, just about everyone I know has these... in DVD, that is.
In blu-ray, though? Of course not. After they got them on DVD, nobody double dipped. We're all waiting for the 4Ks of 'em, thanks.
Went to a record store a couple weeks ago to buy records. Then I came across this bin filled with VHS tapes. One of them was a still sealed VHS copy of Top Gun from 1990. It was only $2.99. I knew that sealed copies of that movie are worth a lot of money. That VHS copy was selling on eBay in the hundreds of dollars mark.
I have this one. I used to see it on Ebay for $100 on up but none now. Spy Kids 3-D: Game Over/The Adventures of Sharkboy and Lavagirl 3-D (Blu-ray Disc, 2012, 2-Disc Set, 3D)
Twilight Time’s copy of La Bamba sells for almost $300 on eBay and Amazon
