On August 13, 2015, a routine day out at the Cedar Point Amusement park for special education teacher James Young ended in tragedy after a spur of the moment decision resulted in deadly consequences. After riding the Raptor Roller Coaster, one of Cedar Points star attractions, he realised that his phone had dropped out of his pocket. Rather then wait until the end of the day James made a fatal decision that would change his families life forever.

Happy Thursday everyone, nearly the weekend
And the only reason that the park refused to a relatively simple request by the family for safer fencing certainly wasn't the cost involved nor was it because they had total confidence in its safety. It's obvious they refused because doing so would be an admittance of guilt on their part for having an unsecured secure area and would open them up to lawsuits. And that's the only reason that they would not help that family and their one Request.
Dude Raycon has awesome products, shoutout to you for having them as your sponsor. I own the Everyday earbuds, the Everyday headphones, and the boombox. Them and Sony have great audio quality in my opinion 👏🏻

Cedar Point is in no obligation to change anything. If you scale two fences and ignore signs the consequences are on you. I sympathize with his family but their frustrations are misguided
Much like your haircut

All due respect to his family .... he clearly wasnt sensible and to say its because the fence too low is ridiculous
"The fence is too low" is an acceptable excuse if a 4 year old can get over it. Not a grown adult who is supposed to be responsible enough to teach children himself.
@markwilks1896 That part of this whole case really threw me for a loop.. he was an adult. That climbed TWO fences. I feel terrible for those that were closely impacted by his loss, friends, family and students.. but good Lord.
@@leroybrown96 some adults never mature or they resort back to their childlike behaviors
@leroybrown96 my mom is 63 and acts like a child and she got checked for dementia and she's clear. She just thinks its okay to lose her manners at her age because she's old and fragile. She claims everything is elderly abuse if you dare call her out on her childish behavior. My nephew was 6 when he got caught in a lie by his dad and to save himself he said my mom (his grandma) had told him to lie. She holds that against him even to his this day now that he's 13! And after that happened, his dad (my brother in law) chose to believe his son so my mom got super angry and held it against his dad also. She didn't see them for 6 years! Recently the dad finally came around and brought the kids to see us. What does my mom do? Start issues like always!!!! She claimed my other nephew (15 and the older brother of the 13 year old) had flipped her off when she was turned around, just because my 9 year old niece said but then she said she was joking to get her cousin in trouble. My mom chose to believe my niece and holds that against my 15 year old nephew! She pulled my nieces hair when she was only a couple months old because my niece (an infant at the time) pulled her hair. When my sister tried telling my mom kids make mistakes and they lie she replied "well then i will make mistakes and lie also!!!" like a toddler. When we told her she acts childish and worde than kids she claimd we were verbally abusing her! She even told me she hopes she gets dementia so she could have an excuse to hit us!
And she is always saying bad stuff about my niece because she doesn't get along with her mom (which is her own daughter!!) She has basically wished bad upon my niece to hurt my sister (again her own grandchild and her own daughter!)
She's truly a sad broken and evil person.
Once again, a phone is not worth risking your life for. It can be replaced- you can't be.
Not everything on it can be but I do agree not worth dying for.
@RickRando001 agreed on that front- I unfortunately had my phone stolen a couple of years ago before I was able to back up some photos and messages, so sadly they were lost forever. But still, I'd rather lose those than my life.
The phone wouldn't even need to be replaced. He just had to wait a few hours, but selfishly couldn't handle that.
Strong likelihood that his phone was broken anyway. Should have just come back for it the next day and get a new phone in the meantime.
How tf is the park to blame bc some dumbass climbed a fence?
“Maybe ppl don’t realize how dangerous it is under a rollercoaster” DAFUQ???? I’m glad the park told them to feck off. Whole thing was dudes own fault then his family wants to get paid and blame others
I think I remember the guy had consumed alcohol too
Very true
I agree 100%! Family just didn't want to "publically" admit that he did something dumb.
Wasn't he RETARDED?
Just as bad as the kid who jumped a fence to get his hat & got decaptitated...
This man endangered the lives of those on the roller coaster.
This one wasn't really a disastor. It was someone making a very very bad decision. Heartbreaking for his family. 😢
🎯
Hard to empathize when a grown man ignores signage and multiple fences
A grown man who was starting a new job as a high school counselor. He should have known better!
@@Mrsjam96 ~ Seriously!! He was getting ready to be someone who was going to counsel high schoolers regarding their school and regular life choices. The irony is not lost on us.🙄
@@cindys.9688 it’s scary actually!
Sorry, but this was a bad decision. Period. The man might have been a nice person, but it was still a selfish, unlawful act he committed. The family should be apologizing to everyone who witnessed the accident and maybe even starting some sort of program for people who are so addicted to their phone that they cannot live without them for a few hours.
Yes!
Could have hurt somebody on the ride too
@@owenross7470 I believe he did. Mentally. Imagine witnessing this?!? Also the people on that ride were stuck up there for over an hour!
You can't idiot-proof everything
As the saying goes “God simply invents a better idiot”.
Its always hard to wrap my brain around how people even entertain the idea of going over the fences.. having the same accident happen this year at Kings Island (Banshee) really shocked everyone. When a guest reports to us that they lost something, we are always quick to retrieve said item at the end of the night. And depending on the item, such as medical needs (i.e inhaler, etc) we are able to take the ride down to retrieve. A phone, hat, whatever, is NOT worth your LIFE. The danger zones are just that.. DANGER zones. Please please please, just alert an associate.. and try to be patient.
Or put your stuff in a locker
@Mrsjam96 Never said to not put it in one. Lockers are great, I think there should be more (at Cedar Point) near all large rides, even those with bins. Though I can't fault someone for not wanting to pay for one, I always encourage it to guests when applicable, or to bring a fanny pack.
@@leroybrown96 I was just adding to your comment. People have many options and choose to climb the fence instead.
With the Banshee one this year, the dude didn't want to wait until close (which was around 2 hours of after the time he lost his keys on the ride) to get the keys back... And from what I heard, he had two kids with him who literally begged him to not go into the restricted area. A very sad and avoidable incident..
@EvanMediaArchive Correct, multiple people tried to stop him, including his kids. My heart aches for them and those who had to see and deal with said incident. 9/10 times people are going to be staying at the park till close anyways, why not ride and enjoy while you wait.. I'll never understand.
You know after watching these disasters they're not really disasters that are stupid people
It amazes me every time I see a “smart” person climb multiple fences to retrieve an item! I don’t care how high they make the fences. There will always be someone who climbs them and dies!
Smart and dumb come in many, many flavors
I’ve noticed some parks put spikes or barbed wire at the top of their fences for their rollercoasters to keep people out. Wild they have to go to that extent.
@gothikvnt all this really only applies to inverts though. Other coasters aren't nearly as dangerous. Noticed how this happened at Banshee in 2024, Raptor before, Batman the Ride in Georgia. All inverts. That's the common denominator.
I went to Cedar point once, but I remember that my glasses had broken and I didn't have contacts so I was walking around nearly blind. Most hilarious part? Know those ring toss games where you try and toss a ring onto a bottle? I fucking nailed it while unable to see what I was throwing at, got like a 4 foot tall stuffed animal for that
What kind of animal did you win
Giant-ass panda, maybe. Have you ever seen the movie "Adventureland?" Great movie...
I feel the same way about fools who break into a dangerous animal's enclosure. Those enclosures are meant to keep the animal in, not necessarily a human out. The fact that there were two fences and plenty of signs should have been warning enough for him to let the staff handle it and not resort to self help. Ultimately, it was only a phone.
Next time the park needs three fences, and even more signs, because teachers can't understand two fences and signs
The rollercoaster isn't safe unless it's surrounded by a 12ft electrified razor wire fence. Two fences with DANGER RESTRICTED AREA signs might as well be an open door with a welcome mat 😂
And armed guards!
i hate when people blame the fences for being too easy to climb. ridiculous
the fences are to stop wandering kids from climbing it.
there are already TWO FENCES. stupid people are stupid people and will climb anyway
My 3 year olds know not to climb fences!
I'm sorry for his family, but I would argue that being such a tall man, he should've realised he was even more at risk of being struck by a train passing by, since his height made him take up even more space under the roller coaster. Either way, in my opinion, beyond reasonably tall safety fences is where the individual's own reaponsibility begins.
If I’ve learned anything from years of customer service, it is - people will NOT read signs, no matter how many there are, or what they say! And even if they do read them, they will defy them!
Same
This is what happens when the general public doesn't know those fences are called DON'T DIE FENCES.
A wise man once said "The difference between bravery and stupidity is the outcome"
the thing that surprises me most about all these "retrieve my phone/hat" deaths is... how the hell are you not able to time the rollercoaster? do they just run for it without getting the timing of the coaster?
I wondered the exact same thing! Like maybe look to see when it returns to the station because you know you’ll have a window of at least a few minutes! 🤷🏻♀️
@@BrokenFootRailfan yeah exactly. do counts in your head to figure out when exactly its gonna pass. These people all need to play Mega Man or Dark Souls or something to figure out when things are safe to do. Imagine be so reckless with your REAL life than most people are in video games. its madness
All these coasters are all inverts though. Banshee, Raptor, Batman the Ride at over Georgia. All inverts. I guess suspended coasters could be hard to dodge too.
@@michael7054 i still dont see how they cant be timed unless they are coming at all different rhythms and its impossible to get a read. at least get on your hands and knees and crawl instead of standing. I wouldnt risk it myself, but if youre gonna do it, sit there and study when the danger is coming, where the danger spots are, etc
@@GregHuffman1987 yeah I totally agree. If it's dark like with the Banshee incident it could make it a little harder.
I have 0 sympathy for people who do dumb shit and get hurt at theme parks. And it’s even more gross when families try to sue or come at the park in any way. It’s common sense, the park shouldnt have to change anything when there are fences that are literally blocking getting to the coaster.
Oh the fools, if only they'd build it with three fences, when will they learn?!
I really don’t understand why people ignore signs like they are there for no reason and I agree with the park they shouldn’t have to change anything because people don’t take heed to the warning signs even though it’s sad what happened to him
The raptor is one of my favorites (the millennium force is by far the best, the view from up there is so amazing) at cedar point, and it was always surrounded by fences. It takes effort to get in there. It's unfortunate that he made that series of choices, but... I feel worse for the people in the train that hit him and the witnesses.
This reminds me of a You Tube video I've seen in which a couple on vacation in Australia went too deep into the Outback and got lost. They both became dehydrated. They split up for some reason, and the husband died trying to drink automobile windscreen washer fluid. And another one in which the husband of a couple on vacation in Hawaii drowned when he got sucked down into a rocky whirlpool that he thought it was okay to play in. Moral of the story: there is no truth to the idea that "I'm on vacation, so it's okay if my brain is, too! Nothing will harm me, because I'm on VACATION!"
BOTTOM LINE : "DON'T GO IN RESTRICTED AREAS, ANYWHERE, BUT ESPECIALLY AT AMUSEMENT PARKS!" 👎🚫🔒
*Says your famous catchphrase with you!* : "AS ALWAYS, THANK YOU FOR WATCHING!!!" 😁🙂👍📹🖤❤
James was told to wait til the end of the day but he ignored the park, warnings on the fences and took the risk which unfortunately ended up taking his life. Phones can be replaced, loved ones cannot. RIP James 😢
The same thing happened this summer at Kings Island on Banshee. That is a newer roller coaster that replaced Son of Beast. I feel bad for the people that work there and the people on the ride when this idiot was hit.
His loose cell phone had no business being on the ride with him. That's why many parks will not allow recording devices of any kind on fast rides, not even a GoPro that is securely strapped on. Idiots tend to ruin a situation for everyone else.
Raptor is my favorite coaster. That first dive and loop is awesome.
I had my own Cedar Point near death experience where the amusement park employees were reckless and held responsible. I was riding the Wildcat. This was the largest wooded roller coaster in the world before it was taken out of service, soon after my incident. As soon as the ride started, and we started the descent from the very top of the coaster my harness flew completely off. I decided to crawl up in the fetal position, where your feet are located. I wanted to create as much friction with my body and reached above my head to grip the handrail. Although everyone was screaming to stop the ride, whether on the ride, or spectators, none of the employees were paying attention and had walked away from the controls panel area. I rode the entire ride in this position having to reset my body on straight sections to keep from falling off the ride. The main control person was a heavy-set lady that had her feet propped up reading a book. As soon as the ride ended, I requested a Amusement Park manager and requested that everyone that was scheduled to work this ride to be terminated or I was going to file a lawsuit. Besides risking my own life, the harness could have hit other passengers on the ride or landed on the spectators far below, which would have caused serious injuries or death.
Glad to hear you're safe. That's crazy.
The family hooked up with a greedy ambulance chaser
Phone addiction and entitlement. Ignoring signs not to take loose items on the ride, being unwilling to wait for the employees to retrieve his phone, ignoring signs and climbing not one, but TWO fences. Sheeesh. I guess the parks need to put up 10 foot high electric fences.
Not Cedar Point, but I was at Knotts this Spring, and went on a couple of rides. They have cubbyholes to store your belongings.
It's not only climbing fences, but also the fact that you have to go searching for the danger area.
I bet if this man would have survived, he would agree that he made the wrong decision.
Lucky nobody on the ride was hurt. His family needs to calm down
Their heads gone. No question.
doesn't matter how tall the fence was, he could see all the warning signs AND STILL went over them. 0% fault on the park.
Darwin Award winner here.
He already had children.
Fine - fences’ fault? Electricity the fences or cover with barb wire.
Oh wait - all it will take is someone getting an ouchy from that and the park gets sued regardless of any warning sign.
And, y'know what? If any fence surrounding a restricted area is barbed or electrified, you know some moron will sue because they got hurt while touching it!!
As soon as you said his phone fell I knew where this was going. I know accidents happen but as a guest you need to be smart with your belongings
It’s his fault. He traumatized innocent people.
Man, it really only takes one lapse of judgement to die in such a preventable way and get reduced to a punchline.
I find this so crazy. Just for your phone that you don't want to lose so you go in and lose your life instead? How much is a phone worth these days? At the very least you know its been dropped. Who knows if it works. If it were me I'd just wait. You knew where it was at and the staff said they would check. Better than losing your phone somewhere and realizing it may be gone. Absolutely crazy how people can't wait. Sorry for his loss, but just wait please people...They aren't being mean to you, but stopping a ride for 1 person who didn't secure their belongings which they told you before riding (I'm sure) isn't going to happen unless its an emergency.
So, a guy who ignored verbal warning, 2 fences, and multiple signs was educating children.... sounds pretty on brand for ohio
You spelled Florida wrong.
I get it, when someone you love dies, you want to blame someone, anyone for it. That is all that is happening here. They know in their hearts that their loved one made a terrible decision. They are just hurting. The park is blameless obviously.
Bro, your kid earned a darwin award, taller fencing won't fix irresponsibity.
He already had children.
When a piece of plastic and metal is more important to you than your life. Couldn't be me.
I feel bad for the people on the coaster and every person who had to get involved in his fatal stupidity. His family wasn't the only group directly affected by his actions and (having seen the fences myself) Cedar Point was blameless.
After scaling the two fences, all he had to do was get prone and crawl to the phone and back. Does not take a brain surgeon to figure that out. Sorry for the terrible loss. These silly phones are deadly in more ways than we can imagine.
The qoute at time marker 9:09 shows that the family member understood Jim was at fault and that he disobeyed the law. Cedar Point was not at fault.
There's always one idiot. If anything he put others through trauma because of his stupidity.
exactly, he ruined everyones day there by being an idiot and putting that on the kids and families there
Unfortunately this is not a case of fences needing to be taller or signs to be bigger, but people needing to be smarter.
Oh yeah phone fence jumping decapitation guy. This really is a famous one. Thanks for the details.
This is in no way on Cedar Point, if you scale not one but two fences with warnings posted on each fence you get what you get. Stupid is as stupid does!
Even if the accident hadn't occurred, the next riders, or perhaps park employees would have seen him scaling the fence and/or searching around underneath. He would have been reported, caught, and ejected from the park. A boneheaded decision, even if the best case scenario had occurred.
Terrible and tragic! He made the wrong choice for sure! Another park a young man died same way trying to retrieve a hat! Neither one are worth dying for! RIP
The family can't possibly blame CPoint for their son ignoring multiple warning signs and multiple fences. He should have followed the rules, such a tragedy.
James had some criminal info on his phone 📱probably regarding disabled kids. HE couldn't risk someone finding it.
Probably was distracted by looking around making sure no one catches him in the restricted area, while should've been watching the roller coaster instead.
Well, should've not climbed there in the first place, but you know...
This is almost exactly what happened at king's island this year.
1 idiot does not = disaster
He was in fairly decent shape to be able to scale 2 fences. He was just too dang cocky and careless.
Maybe he thought he could move faster or duck down lower than he could.
I feel sorry for his family and friends, who I'M SURE had to hear about it.
I mean RIP to this guy, but again, why die for a phone? I’ll never understand 💐
Dumbass couldn't follow a simple rule and causes a load of grief for a lot of people.
These kind of stories infuriate me. Blaming the park because James was so desperate to get his phone, he couldnt wait until the end of the day when staff said they would get it for him so he ignored signs and went to get it himself. How the hell is that the parks fault? Oh, because the fence wasnt high enough so a 6ft man could easily climb over? Seriously? Families can be so blind to their loved ones own stupid actions, but you need to hold them accountable and stop looking for others to blame. James was told he would get his phone back later - ignored. The fence is there for a reason, to stop idiots getting to areas they shouldnt - ignored. Clear warning signs - ignored. Yeah totally the parks fault **eye roll**
At some point there has to be some personal responsibility for your actions. When a place is completely negligent a person is injured or killed, then they are at fault. When a person goes out of their way to disregard safety measures that are clearly in place, then it's their fault if something happens
I know they're coping and shit but the family stilll trying to put blame to the park despite knowing very well everything happened bc the dude stupid actions is embarrasing. A simple "no tresspasing" sign should be enough to persuade everyone with a brain to not enter to restricted areas.
Cedar Point in the 1800’s? Yeah. Right.
This is not the first time this has happened ( you, yourself have done instances like this) and this won’t be the last
The cell phone has been the issue of many mishaps. Yes, thru choices. Sorry for the outcome.
I'm sorry for his family's loss but if he was going to ignore fences and warning signs to retrieve a phone, bad things are bound to happen. This is not the amusement park's fault.
🙏🏻 But He Was Drinking That I Did Not Know But Forgot.

Also, it’s 2024, why are people still taking their phones on coasters???
James had serious injuries to his brain...
and then he got struck by the rollercoaster
It’s always sad when someone is hurt doing something when they should have known better but the culpability is with themselves, others are not to blame. Although higher fences wouldn’t be a bad thing to try to deter people.
They could make the fences 10feet tall and there will still be an idiot that climbs it and dies
@@Mrsjam96 I know but then the park would be 100% beyond reproach, cover themselves and make it more difficult for people to climb

It's the fence's fault? That's a good one. He just got off the ride, he knows what the fence is there for, and he ignored it. He's lucky he didn't hurt anyone on the ride.
If I’m not mistaken, this is the reason the raptor has those lights near the bottom when the cart is coming. I never knew cedar point was so old, but then again The Blue Streak is ancient and had my head thrashing around like the waist of a hula dancer 😭
Full offense, his stupid ass decided to scale the damn fence and grab his phone when he could’ve asked ride operators or park security to help him. His own dad admitted that climbing the fence shouldn’t have been done so like…. Common sense is not that common and your son is not as “sensible” as y’all claim he was.

Family's not winning this case.
Another winner of a Darwin award
It's truly tragic what happened. His family is grasping trying to find some piece of evidence against the park. When sadly James made a bad decision that day. Thats all it was.
The only change parks could make is a secure cubby system for guests' loose pocket contents.
They actually have lockers.
All parks have these
This ride has bins for your items that they lock up for each train. So there was no reason for him to have his phone in the first place
I always struggle leaving a like on sad videos but recognize i have to show as much support as i can i thank u for the work u do
Idiots will die for their phones, don't be like James.
Dumb person dies over Smart phone.
I remember waiting 2 and a half hours to ride the Raptor😂
People's stupdity is insane all for a poxy phone. There's a reason why warning signs & fences are put in place it's to prevent folk from getting clattered into. If a person blatantly ignores those warning signs & gets stuck that's on the individual. Ultimately he paid the price for his own stupdity which I do not have any compassion for. The ride was in perfect working order there was no negligence from any staff it's solely down to the actions of the individual. It really annoys me when the victims family blame the park when they did nothing wrong in any capacity.
James could have hurt someone else besides himself by disobeying the rules. He had already gotten an answer about the retrieval of his phone. like the park said many people drop their phones because they're irresponsible in securing their phone before they go on a ride such as a roller coaster. James, and educated man acted irresponsibly, and it cost him his life.
need to seperate the content into Stupid people doing stupid things vs true accidents.
Yeah, because majority of the people who ride those things are over six feet tall.

Sad story. Love that ride.
I fell sorry for his family and witnesses. He was an adult and a teacher he should have known better, sorry if I sound horrible for saying this but a phone is not worth your life. He couldn't have cared much for his family to put them through that. A teacher is meant to be a role model he was not.
James was clearly responsible such a stupid thing to do and he was a teacher 🤔
Oh noooo...
The consequences of my actions.
He was not responsible he was impatient and it caused him his life. The park was not to blame.
He was a teacher to even worse 😂
