  • In 1975, the late Maysles Brothers' documentary put Grey Gardens on the map. The iconic East Hampton estate was the home of Big and Little Edie Beale, the aunt and cousin of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, who lived in the house in a state of shocking squalor. Bought and renovated by late Ben Bradlee and wife Sally Quinn, the house has now been restored to its former glory. Last summer, fashion designer Liz Lange rented the house and we were privileged to visit. Join us for an insider video tour of this iconic home. To see more, visit Quintessenceblog.com

Thank GOD Little Edie demanded the house not be torn down, she had the fore-sight to know it's magnificent history and to know tearing it down would have been a disaster! and thanks for posting this video, what a treat to see the house in all its glory!

Quinn and Bradlee undertook the extraordinary restoration. They understood and honored the home's spirit. Since Bradlee's death, Quinn has rented the property. It is currently on the market (July 2017) for a little under $20 mil. Though Liz Lange is not the owner (she rents) she is so spot-on about the disgusting McMansions that come with heli-pads and bowling alleys. The vulgarians who have no appreciation or understanding of the Hampton heritage.

Agreed! She fully embraced the house and its gardens. If anyone deserves to own it, she does. (Hey Liz... it could be yours for $18 mil)

Well said - I am from the UK my great Aunt is mixed Irish/American heritage and used to have friends who she would regularly visit in the Hamptons. As children she used to tell us wonderful stories about life in that area that fascinated me and she told me about Grey Gardens - which i watched and loved, I always had a plan to visit myself. However my Aunt said exactly the same thing that so many houses and buildings have been put up and has changed the entire character of the area - she last visited 15 years ago and said she wouldn’t return as it’s no longer the place she remembers as being so wonderful. So perhaps I will just keep my memories of her stories and the pictures she left us (she passed a few years back) and not visit. I have been to New York city a number of times and it would be easy to have visited but I haven’t yet. We have a similar problem in the UK where new people build absolute monstrosities with no respect to the local area or it’s history. it’s hard to believe people move to a fascinating historical area and have no interest in it - also thanks for introducing me to the word ‘citidiots’ it’s perfect for some of the people who move to small English villages only to build ugly city dwellings 👍

Sometimes I wish these episodes would be longer. Being from the area, I know some of the people who were involved with the Beales and their story. A lot to it. The current owner keeps the house and property lovely.

You have done a fabulous job in restoring the Grey Gardens. I remember the house years ago when I lived near by. It was a complete wreck with animals, fleas living in it. I wanted to buy it but instead bought another “Please save me home” on the Coast of Maine. You are brave and saved a great home❤️

It was actually Sally Quinn and Ben Bradlee who renovated and owned the house when we filmed. Liz, who was renting for the summer, has since bought the house. We hope to get back and see what she's done!

I'm going to buy this house. It has everything I always wanted in a home. Love the sweet history set in stylish, yet humble country home decorated with period furniture. The wrap-around porch, hammock, beautiful and delightfully surprising garden, plenty of room for guests, the pool, the pergola, the thatched hut I would use for my garden potting and planting come spring.
I love how all the nooks and crannies of the garden are so mysterious and intriguing. I especially love the wooden floors, built-in cabinets, cupboards, window seating, bookcases, glass doors, wood stove, fireplaces, grand entrance, sun room. It just overwhelms me because it fits my dream home so perfectly! I even have a fabulous mahogany four and a half-foot Baby Grand Aeolian piano from the 1930's that could be placed in just the "right spot". Plus, I would take it with all the furniture that's there! To me, it's move-in ready. There is so much character in older homes. Many homes like this...you can tell its history was filled with love, and more good memories than bad. Only two things I would change. The tennis court would become an extension of the garden with lovely precious tea rose flower beds, with a shaded place to sit or linger under a couple of fruit trees, preferably an apple and pear tree. Along the road in the front, I would add a matching wood fence to encourage newly-planted climbing roses to clamber over and along it to frame the gorgeous home in even more abundant glamor and charm. Grey Gardens is going to be mine...someday soon.

sylvie girl I'm going to buy this house as well. It reminds me a bit like a huge doll house. What a wonderful place to live. I love the grounds around it. I think I would sit there for hours with the scent of the flowers, trees and grass and ocean. You just do not see houses like this anymore with all of its charm. It may not ne everyones taste, but it sure is mine. The price tag is a bit hefty so I best win a lottery or something.

If someone can find the old article, there was a issue of ( I think it was ) Town and Country, maybe 10yrs , 15yrs ago ?.., which discussed the first days of the new owners going into Grey Gardens to see how they were going to go about restoring the house to it's original state. When suddenly either the new owner or one of the design, archetict team was startled to see a apparition of Big Edie, standing in the middle of the living room area, down stairs. The person who the apparition appeared in front of , said , Edie don't worry, we will respect your beautiful home. With that, Big Edie supposedly vanished. See if someone can find it, I had the old magazine but no longer have it. I remember being shocked by the paragraph in the article, but I remember reading it quite clearly. I had chills but was also happy to know Edie was watching her home.

Hi Tobias... The video is a little misleading... It gives the impression that Liz Lange owns the place. Actually, she rented it from Sally Quinn, wife of the late Ben Bradlee. It was Quinn and Bradlee who restored Grey Gardens in the spirit of its glory days. (Currently on the market for $18 mil.)

LIKE!! Wonderful to see the house still standing, and in such beautiful shape that all these years later, people can enjoy it. The story of the Beales is a sad one, but something of those ladies lives on in their home. While I don't believe in ghosts, I do think some essence of a person remains in a place they inhabited for many years. I always felt something comforting about the 1927 bungalow we rented when we were first married, even though my husband worked nights and I was there alone. Thank you indeed Liz! Amazing that so much was left and preserved by Liz in the way of books and things. And ironic that her last name is Lange as well - any relation to Jessica that played Big Edith? LOL Big question for me is was the pool always there? Little Edie certainly liked swimming in the ocean. But it's a wonder she didn't point the pool out in the doc being a shame she couldn't use it as well. The whole story of Grey Gardens, which now includes documentaries & a movie, made my heart skip a beat when I saw that Quintessence had a video. I agree with others that we want & need to see MORE. MORE is better in this example.
