Lucky Mom. You got this! Keep it simple, don’t over water (meaning let them dry out well between waterings), don’t let them sit in water too long, make sure the roots have access to air circulation. They need some light but not a lot. Good luck!!!

Hello Randy! I don't know how I got your videos into my feed, but I'm TOTALLY inspired to get my first orchid as part of my new 2021 resolutions. I've always been afraid to try orchids since it seems they take such special care, but you have so many helpful tips, I feel like I might be successful. Just moved to Vegas, so we've got definite temp shifts from night to day. Subscribed and will keep on watching (& go to the 'gram too)❤🌱

Hello Randy, you are truly so kind to follow up with subscribers this way. To be honest, the little one is doing well. I've reported and removed all the "funk" and did my first full soak on Sunday. The blooms are happy and it seems great. I'm waiting on the bigger, 2-stalk plant. Its blooms are quite nice, so I'll likely wait to repot but did cut the funky roots and drilled holes into the plastic holder. I was top watering, but I really think I'll shift to soaking so that the roots/ bark medium really fill up. They always seem crusty & dry the day after I top water. Love your photos and everything you're doing, thank you!!!🙏🌱💕

Depends. I’ve had some bloom within months and some take years. I grow in a very primitive way compared to those that control every variable and can predict results.

Randy, thank you so much for the tutorial. I was given a plant that i believe is from the genus (VCD-434 D. Nida Stripe) yesterday evening. We were at dinner with some friends and the topic of Orchid came up and I had no idea that my friend was into Orchids. After dinner, he took us into his Orchid room and gave me a started plant off the end of a stem that looked like it was dying and on the way out. He also gave me a pot similar to what your using and a small bag of bark which now that I'm home, I will put in the pot and begin to soak for an hour or two. Thanks again. Your videos are great and maybe in a year, I might have an Orchid of my own.

    Sup Randy,
    Thank You for the insight.
I've been mixing my sphagnum moss in with my bark and will definitely place a layer across the top.
Also, I've started to soak my plants for a few hours myself which I prefer to flooding with water.
I do have one question, I have a plant that has never bloomed since I got it a few years ago. It's in the same light conditions as all the others, has some of the largest leaves and continues to produce leaves, currently 8, but unbalanced 5 to 3. I have another that has a balanced 13 leaves 7 to 6 which usually spikes annually but the spike is short (10 inches) and thin, but the flowers tend to last the longest. Again, all plants are in the same lighting and temperature conditions.
Where did you get that green glazed orchid pot with the circular holes in the video? That's tight!

    • @RandyMHarris

      DJ,
What's up? Thanks for stopping by. From my experience blooming is a product of temp changes more than is is about light. It may just be far enough from the window that it doesn't get the same temperature fluctuation. I would move it closer to the window. Odd that you are getting an off count leaf patten. Might just be a stubborn plant....LOL The pots come from Callaway's nursery. Good price and a decent selection usually. Hey keep in touch. If you are on Instagram look me up @blkorchidproject. @@RandyMHarris Randy, thanks for the reply. It does seem that this orchid is stubborn, actually it was the closest to the window, so moved it back.
As far as the leaf imbalance, I have taken 2 leaves from that side which died and the next leaf that is sprouting is on the short count side. I'll probably lose a bottom leaf from the heavy side as well. So I'm not too worried about the leaf count, IT JUST WON'T SPIKE... damn, Damn, DAMN!!! [[[[Terracotta Shatters]]]]
But out of the 8 plants I have (Wifey won't let me buy any more) 5 showed me Love with blooms... not too bad of a ratio. Down to my last one so I will repot soon.
One last thing, have you done a video on Orchid Leaf Fungus?
I have only one plant with the problem. I applied hydrogen peroxide with a cotton swab which seemed to have stopped the spread, leaving a "white patch" with a brown or green stippled border at the area. Just have to wait for the affected leaves to die off it seems. Just wanted some insight on how you'd deal with it.
Anyway, what you do is truly appreciated!!!
Stay Woke Brotha and Be Safe!!
      DJ

Are they in good health? If so, wait until the blooms drop. The stress from the repotting can cause them to drop off. If the plant is in bad shape repot ASAP to get it healthy.

Thanks for your informative videos. I have not had much success in getting my orchids to rebloom. I’m going to try again, with your helpful videos, to keep my new orchid alive and hopefully rebloom. How often should I water my orchid? What brand or kind of medium to you use to repot your plant? Do you mix your own?

    • @RandyMHarris
      @RandyMHarris  4 роки тому

      Hello Janice,
Blooming tends to be more about temperature fluctuations. Most phals. need about a 20 degree change for night to day, with a low below 65 or so. This triggers the plant to spike. Watering depends greatly on the size of the pot, medium and climate. My advice is to always wait until your plant has been dry for a day or 2 before watering again. Phals like to dry out some between waterings. I've been using a mix from Dr. Delphinium here in Texas. I'm also trying some of the hardware store brands (video coming soon). FYI I have moved my orchid content to a new channel The Black Orchid Project ua-cam.com/channels/0Vek_K6UlhF5eyJlhOCHlQ.html If you would like to follow along.
