  • The root system is the life source for every plant, especially orchids. Root rot is the primary cause of the demise of most orchids. Knowing how it works and keeping it healthy is essential to keep your thriving. In this video I break down the root system and how to get it healthy and keep them healthy.

Thank you for all the great information you have shared. I have learned so much and I’ve only watched two videos. I have a small orchard from a grocery store and it’s dying. Im going to try what I’ve learned so far and I’m so excited to see what happens. I am new and I have subscribed. Thank you.

I have a question you mention you talk about using clear pots and adding extra holes to allow air around the roots.
Could you use clear soda (soft drink) bottles with sufficient drain holes.
The plastic is food grade and recycle the bottle. Thankyou please keep posting
    Neil.

Just watched one of your previous videos about repotting a phalonapsis (sic). I never knew you could salvage the bare roots. All these year's I've been cutting away any thing that had been exposed without that green "sponge" coating .
I've just purchased my first dendrobium, after years of the phal rescues. Slowly expanding my horizons.

Well, as long as they don’t dry out too much, which is hard to avoid if the cover is removed. If you catch it early enough they may still move water to the plant.

Thank you for your information. I bought my first orchid and did not know that it had rot until I repotted it. Maybe I can save it but if it does die, I know now what to do and what to look for.

Hi! If you get to this question...Do you ever cut the leaves that have damage? I got some orchids from Lowe's which had been in water and outside a few days in cold. The leaves were water logged. The roots are good but there was some mushiness and rot that I cut off. No one talks about cutting the leaves or should you. Parts of the leaves came back but the part that became mush did not.

Hi Randy I am new to these beautiful Orchids I have two that have flowers on, I bought a one from the store and it was very dry, I repotted it put in new media and watered it. Where is the best place to put your orchids I have mine on my kitchen window but take them away when the sun is on the window.

Great tips! My orchid plants look beautiful. I’ve had my orchids for two years. Two of them are in beautiful bloom. They became very compacted in the original pot. . I purchased orchid pots with holes and orchid potting soil. I’ll wait to repot after they no longer bloom. I’m so afraid to touch the root system , make any cuts , and break it apart because it’s so compact

Can you please help me. I have had my orchid for three years now. I noticed the leaves dying the last month or so. I filed a video of yours and seen I have root rot on pretty much every since root 😭. I pulled off the slim roots and left the thin part. I think only one root was fine. I transplanted it. I am now scared to water it again. It has grown more leaves up both of the arms. But those are also now showing signs of to much watering. Can I save it ? It’s so special to me. Got it from a close friend who is no longer in my life. I would really like help ( and send a photo )

Hi Randy, thank you for this video. It wasn't quite clear, but after the roots soak in the jar and you pour it out,
do you just put the orchid back in the jar without any water or medium until the roots need another soak?

Hi Randy, What if your orchid lost all vibrant roots under the plant but has 2 air roots that are very green. I cut the roots off until I got to the bottom of the plant and now it still has very green leaves and the two air roots are strong only the ones underneath are not getting long, it has been 2 months. It just keeps falling out of the substrate. Did I kill this orchid?

    • @RandyMHarris
      @RandyMHarris  2 роки тому

No, you’re good, sounds like you didn’t have good drainage or air flow to the roots. The two good roots should sustain it. Maybe get it repotted and get the two roots inside.

I don't understand why people are saving and don't cut that flower spikes? They are just using the energy of a plant, for what?Maby one or two flowers? If the root sistem is week there is no logic to saving the flower spikes because it is draning the energy that is necessary to deweloping new roots and leaves!Always better to have healthy pant then poor blooms.
