VERY INTERESTING FACT: The composers of this song (Sivuca and Gloria Gadelha) were living in New York at the time they made this track, during a very harsh winter in the 70's.... all that coldness made them feel very homesick, So they composed this song to bring/feel them back to the local brazilian street markets of their region ;) Furthermore: They were in NY cuz Sivuca used to work together with Mirian Makeba , one of the greatest singer ever!! So The Kiffness and Maria Merenda may not even realized, but this song had already a south african/brazilian conexion even before this duet!!!!! ;)

we do consider the country of brazil as geographic part of "latin" america, although we just use south america most of the time
but culturally we dont consider ourselves latins, if you go to brazil and ask a street musician to play "latin" music, they will play a colombian track, a mexican track, but they will NEVER play a brazillian song.
everything that comes from other latin american nations we call latin, if you ask a brazillian what is a latino they will say "its the people from the spanish speaking nations"
and same goes for the opposite, they dont see us as the same as argentinians or peruvians
we are south americans, and we love our neighbors(and they love us), but we ARE not our neighbors, plus we're not fans of being seen as off brand americans, we're no more and no less americans as the northern ones.
we're just as american as germans are european.
edit: yep, i found the study, its made by a mexican center called CIDE, they state that in a survey, 79% consider themseves "just brazillians", 13% as "citizens of the world" and only 4% as "latinos"
i would put the study here but im afraid of being deleted as span(plus, the page i found, is in portuguese).
and i go as far as to say that many these 4% that said they are latinos are either hippies, hipsters or immigrants.
nothing against those groups, not at all, its just that its how the few people, that i personally know, that say that kinda stuff, are usually hippies.
