I was 13 years old in 1983 stuck in a hotel with my twin brother and little sister while my father and his new wife went out to shop while we were on vacation with them. I was truly miserable as I never really connected with my father. My step mother wanted absolutely nothing to do with my siblings or myself. Bored, I turned on the TV in the hotel room and switched the dial to MTV. I listened to the standard music video rotations of the day and then this song and clip appear on the screen. Watching U2 for first time was a transcendent experience that I still cannot adequately describe to this day. Here was someone in Bono both masculine and artistic who also appeared to have a strong mystic charisma .I definitely felt different watching this video but was unable explain why with my 13 year old intelIect , I just knew something was fundamentally singular with this band. A month later I bought the WAR album and in particular listened to 40 , the song based on psalm 40 over and over again. Listening to that song and the rest of the album was a religious experience for me.. Flash forward 40 years and I am now a Priest. I know God had a hand in allowing me to see U2 for first time at age 13 as a scared and unhappy child. Bono and the lads are far from perfect but the Spirit helped to use their music to speak to me and feed me when it counted the most....
Its magic, his voice, the guitars, the lyrics, let go back in time, but not be miserable, well maybe just a little miserable. Thank God for being stuck in the Hotel.
Definitely a timeless classic. U2 is known to be a secretive Christian band, so I'm thinking that may be what you felt when you first ran into this song. For me, I think about the time I was a student at a large university, and was involved with one of its fraternities. I miss those days, and I also wish I could have done better with the support team I had then. So in this song, perhaps God is revealing Himself to me, mandating that I secure my family and take great care of those who support me today. Not only that, but to also reach out and help others when I can. I apologize of the late response, but I wanted to take the time and think things out before giving a tribute to this magnificent song.
U2 is my oldest love in music. Bono's voice, Edge's great sound and guitar playing and the solid and original spine of the band with Larry and Adam who are always forgotten... He's a little too preachy for me. Love the band's music, some of it--I stopped listening at one point for no particular reason. Bono, sometimes egos get inflated, and perspective is lost. "Am I buggin' you? I don't mean to bug you". I guess he just started bugging me at some point. Great band. Charitable person. Nobel Peace prize..........no.
Yes, totally agree. What's even more amazing to me is how a-typical these intros are. Their best song IMO is Wire and the intro in that song is the best - intense, insane - straight to the brain and very melodic, it drives the whole song and takes you on a journey. Then there is ISHFWILF - simple and iconic and beautiful, Unforgettable Fire...sheer beauty, the heart beat of Beautiful Day, the majesty of Crumbs From Your Table, the exciting electricity in Electric Co., the melancholy of An Cat Dubh, the intense riff of Rejoice, Larry's awesome drumming intro on I Threw a Brick Through a Window, the iconic intro of Pride, and of course the playful pulse of Where the Streets Have No Name. There are so many...Even the end to Stay (Far Away So Close) is incredible...I almost forgot Heartland and All I Want is You, Seconds, New Year's Day, Drowning Man, 40, Promenade, Bad, Three Sunrises, Love Comes Tumbling, With or Without You...These aren't simple songs they are very creative musical experiences.
I remember driving around L.A back in the day with this in the CD player. The energy and power that they bring to a song is incredible. Unforgettable times. Their music is always on rotation in my head. Lol.
I was a couple hours north of you and too young to drive when this was released but since you said CD... The Joshua Tree for me, Joseph. It didn't leave my CD player for 18 months when I was 17. I had everything of theirs on vinyl including some bootlegs by the spring of '85. Like you, their music is always on rotation in my head. Those four guys along with Eno, Lanois, Lillywhite and Flood all have a great sense of melody, space, rhythm and groove. They can be raucous and they can be sleepy, hypnotic and chill. It seems like a simple recipe for those who play rock 'n roll but so few acts other than the greats are actually able to conjure up and display those awesome qualities in their music like these four guys on so many albums and on so many tours.
Is it true, nobody walks in La? A year ago i stopped driving, cuz i felt like it, after driving around in circles and paying insurance never used by me, for thirty years and ive never had so much spending money.
u2 needs to record an LP in Paris, I don't know why that is, but the city's atmosphere might be interesting in its effect on the band's creativity. Like Hewson's bomber-jacket
That crisp and purposeful drumming, innovative percussive guitar playing, and driving bass made for a force to be reckoned with. So different and exciting for that time.
Nickelodeon took a chance on airing Red Rocks in '83 with themes of bloodshed, heartache, unfulfilled potential and promise, isolation and dislocation. Real world happenings at the time and even still. This was MY first true band that felt like they encapsulated a wearied hope in a not so distant future. This 9 yr old picked up every word.
I’ve always been a casual fan of U2 but I had never heard this song until I heard it on SiriusXM and now I’m in love with it 😍What an energetic and catchy song! I’m going to check out some of their older stuff like this album and Boy

"Am I buggin' you? I don't mean to bug you". I guess he just started bugging me at some point. Great band. Charitable person. Nobel Peace prize..........no.
Adore these remasted videos. Brings back some fantastic memories. Cheers lads.
❤️❤️
Cheers , we are U2ers
two hearts and electric co. my favorite old school U2....
Also, is it just me or are U2 MASTERS at making some of the very best song openings and even closings??!
@@grsministries9830 I'm listening to Wire, and I agree!
U2 (at least from the 70s to early 90s and some of 2000s are one of my favorite bands ever.
Strange only 424k views of this I don't understand. Perhaps there's millions in another version but wow this is among U2 most vintage
The revolution on youtube channel by u2😎

Happy 40th anniversary Bono & Ali
Roots! Best era!
Outstanding! Looking at the guys and how young they were…wow! How fast it all goes away, I really miss those days!
Still the best U2 song.
Good god, this song still rocks. Timeless.
In México I lisent u2 very good vintage
Ridiculously brilliant
At 55 years old, man I get chiils to listen to their music again, man this ROCKS , I love this song, brought so many good memories of my youth ❤ 😊
I’ve always felt this song gets overlooked, in the pantheon of U2 songs (singles). Top 3, in my humble but correct opinion.
I remember driving around L.A back in the day with this in the CD player. The energy and power that they bring to a song is incredible. Unforgettable times. Their music is always on rotation in my head. Lol.
Red Hill mining town
Yesss
Unforgettable fire!
Like Hewson's bomber-jacket
the video at Sacré
U2 grazie di esistere!!
One of their best songs. U2 are a great band.
80s
That BASSLINE😍😍😍 Adam’s best and one of my favorites!!!
1. The Unforgettable Fire
2. Gloria
3. Two Hearts Beat As One
The song that made me fall in love with U2
Two words: The Edge
That was MY U2... Really.
That crisp and purposeful drumming, innovative percussive guitar playing, and driving bass made for a force to be reckoned with. So different and exciting for that time.
この頃のU2良いっすねー。
Nickelodeon took a chance on airing Red Rocks in '83 with themes of bloodshed, heartache, unfulfilled potential and promise, isolation and dislocation. Real world happenings at the time and even still. This was MY first true band that felt like they encapsulated a wearied hope in a not so distant future. This 9 yr old picked up every word.
I’ve always been a casual fan of U2 but I had never heard this song until I heard it on SiriusXM and now I’m in love with it 😍What an energetic and catchy song! I’m going to check out some of their older stuff like this album and Boy
Il faut écouter les premiers albums,je me suis arrêté a arthung baby..car après c'est devenu Une machine a FRIC,et ils n'ont pas retrouver le ROCK comme avant.
bands have signature songs. i would say this is definitely one of U2's many. but immho, their highly non-signature song 'like a song' is easily a top 10 of all time in their catalogue.
@@hervemauri6457comme la plupart ,Metallica en est un bon exemple.
