    TLDR Summary:
    1. Varies by individual.
    2. Watch your carb / sugar intake.
    3. CGMs (continuous glucose monitors) are helpful.

    My carb tolerance is 30g per meal/100g total per day. More than that and I get very strong cravings that will often trigger a binge. Continuous glucose monitors are great if you can afford them, but zeroing in on your craving response to differing grams of carbs per meal and per day is a good alternative (and free). For me that means that a bite of cake is fine but an entire slice is not. I may want the whole piece but I know I will have to battle the binge gremlins if I go there. The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result. If you need a CGM to help you figure out your carb threshold then by all means get one. If you already know full well that one Oreo is one too many and you just keep testing your limit then it’s time to adult up, draw a line in the sand and ignore the foods you need to ignore to keep the carb gremlins caged.

    I eat Pizza & I spike to almost 200 an hour after eating but I recently discovered that I can eat a WHOLE Sweet Potato (Skin ON) with my meal & not go over 120 :)
    This was an important test after an Insulin Response test I saw on sweet potato,... No skin produced a big sugar spike, skin alone produced a medium spike but the WHOLE sweet potato produced a low sugar spike & I found this to be true with my own test :)

      "Insulin Resistant" which is Pre Diabetic,... I have just seen my fasting blood sugar come into the normal fasting range for the first time in years.
      My HBA1C (90 day blood sugar) is almost in normal range,... Best thing you can do is use a blood sugar test to know what you should not eat :)
      See if you can get a Fasting INSULIN test done (not just fasting sugar) & compare it to the recommended range,... Mine here in USA came in at 16.8 & the "accepted" range here is 2 to 17 but Doctors who specialize in treating T2 Diabetics say it should not go above 4.
      This means I found out that my body was producing FOUR times the Insulin as "healthy" people just to keep my blood sugar in check & this high amount of Insulin is bad news & really means that you are T2 Diabetic.
      Doctors just check Fasting Blood Sugar but they DON'T check Fasting Blood INSULIN so they don't understand that your sugar is only okay due to the massive amount of Insulin which is a Hormone which one of it's jobs is to store fat,... You need normal Sugar AND normal Insulin,... If your blood sugar is high, the Docs will give you MORE Insulin to get the sugar down without even checking your Insulin level first.
      Cut out Carbs & you lower sugar AND insulin.

    I had started my Keto journey using Xylitol as my preferred sweetener. Then I learned to test my glucose - one morning I had chewed a piece of Purr gum. Just for fun I checked my glucose it was really high. Though that was strange for Xylitol products tell you it; slow on the glycemic index.. Not for me!! So I think no one should just "assume" everyone is alike in the foods they eat.

      Sweeteners can spike insulin, and can be worse than sugar since there is no dietary glucose for the insulin to work on.

    I use a Libre, really helpful. I would think if you are pounding carbs and shooting insulin, having alarms would be nice until you get stabilized. I followed what my libre said and went from 40 units long acting and 20 fast units per meal to zero insulin in a month.

    I saw Dr Hallberg's Ted Talk and was impressed as this was my thinking. I completed a form online to get more information. The intake is $250 and the monthly fee is $249. I told the lady that my income was limited and I perhaps could only do this for 2-3 months would that be ok. She said yes. We end the conversation with her telling me that she would send me the intake application. I was excited. I do have insurance in NY but she said that Virta does not have any agreement with insurance companies in NY. This means out of pocket. Not having a follow-up, makes me feel that because I can only afford a few months, Virta will not bother with me. I really want to start this and would continue whatever it is that I get and if I am able to return to the program, then I would. I feel so rejected.

    • @hugosousa2597
      @hugosousa2597 2 роки тому +1

      @@RobertaPeck I think that is not necessarily true. You could have a normal level of blood sugar due to high levels of insulin. Maybe you ate something that made your blood sugar levels very high and, to compensate that, your insuline levels are still very high, restoring the blood sugar to normal levels.

    • @RobertaPeck
      @RobertaPeck 2 роки тому +1

      Hugo, Yes you are right about insulin not always following sugar spikes. I just learned that eating in a window ,like before 2:00 PM helps the body maintain lower insulin; and increasing fiber at that time as well as monounsaturated fat and omega 3s further enhanced lower insulin, rather than same food later in the day,(something about circadian rhythm),And of course moving the body before and after eating pulls sugar into the muscle without needing insulin to push it in.

    Am I to understand that if I embarked on a ketogenic diet and attempt to reverse my insulin resistance and decide that I want to eat more of a flexible diet like If It Fits your Macros AKA Weight Watchers to maintain my weight loss that I'm going to put the weight right back on even though I'm watching my calories?

    • @Jan96106
      @Jan96106 5 років тому +5

      They are saying that it depends on the degree of your insulin resistance. If you are an individual who is genetically prone to high insulin levels, if you try to eat carbs like someone who doesn't have this problem, you will gain weight, partly because you won't be able to control your calories; once you add those carbs back in, you will become more hungry and start over-eating; the other reason is that the high insulin levels will send a message your body to store fat. Losing weight is difficult, but keeping it off is even harder. Ninety percent of people who lose weight gain it back again. I hope this information helps.

    • @marvinnelson5073
      @marvinnelson5073 4 роки тому +1

      Calories aren’t the controlling factor, not totally meaningless but more your hormones. If you have insulin resistance, unlikely you could maintain on a weight watchers, and the calorie restriction would mean you down regulate your basal metabolism so after awhile you will be sitting there freezing and when you eat, the weight comes back. Caloric restriction doesn’t work.

      Learn which macros mess with you. For me it's carbs, so I understand that I have to watch them very closely regarding my intake. I can't leave the Atkins or Carnivore diet and hop on the McDougall starch solution or Doug Graham's Raw-Til-4and think it's going to flow correctly. Whatever is causing your insulin to spike is what you either reduce or make a vigilant effort to avoid. Leaving the diet isn't the big puzzle. It's learning about your food triggers. I view Low Carb as training wheels for a nutrition-related bicycle. It taught me what I should and shouldn't do food wise.
