- Go back, back, back in time to 1975 and explore Hillcrest Mall located in Richmond Hill, ON.
I was studying photography at Ryerson University and while shopping one weekend in February, I decided to take some quick, practice "snap shots." I used a small, inexpensive, Sears rangefinder camera to be as unobtrusive as possible. Unfortunately, the camera had no flash or exposure control, slow shutter speed (everything blurs) and crude focus - giving the photos a unique, raw, photojournalistic look. While scanning the curled up photos, I couldn't help notice the level of human interaction and participation in the shopping experience that is missing from today's on-line, cell phone addicted culture. I was fortune to work for Sears (Camera Dept.) and Kinney
Shoes at Hillcrest, during the summer breaks.
Thanks for sharing this. It brings back so many wonderful memories of a much simpler time.
Fantastic to see, I love looking at the history of the mall. When I saw there was a loblaws I was confused where that would of been but seeing it was where the lenscrafters & mattress store (formerly bulk barn) it makes sense!
I was born in 79 so all of my memories of Hillcrest are from the 80s and early 90s (we moved away mid 90s). The interior was pretty much intact as the video shows above until their first reno which I think was late 90s? I remember the rounded ceiling awnings, the tree's with those grates, the 70s brick floor and those tiled pillars. This is why I relate to the 70s more than the 80s looking back even though I was pretty much an 80s kid. So many of the places I went still had old 70s interiors and exteriors.
who could forget those horrible green rounded chairs in the foodcourt? Great video!
Thank you for sharing

Thanks for the memories
Thanks so much for sharing! My friends and I would skip high school, just to hang out at Hillcrest Mall, until the truency officers spotted us. LOL
I used to go EVERY Saturday with my parents when it first opened. One week for lunch I would have Mr Sub Roast Beef Sub (They were so much better then) or the next week it would be Points east spareribs. I miss how it used to be there.
Donut Window had the best chocolate donuts. Wish there were some photos of the old Santa's Village (when it was a magical path and not just a chair).
Would you happen to have footage of Terry Fox in Richmond Hill?
Capt Submarine. MUCH Better than Mr Submarine will ever want to be. And I remember Leisure World, Dominion Play World, The arcade were quarters were used up all the time. And I remember seeing the Littlest Hobo dogs too
I can only imagine how amazing that was. I remember the Mr. Sub there, and from my memory even that was excellent.
@@nameless-user Capt Submarine. Wish that place was still around
Nuce
Odd, I did not remember a library there
If you pause the video, over the word “library” you can make out that this seems to be the Yorkdale branch of the Toronto Public Library.
@@barbaralowens4369 You are SO right :)
