HILLCREST MALL - 1975
Go back, back, back in time to 1975 and explore Hillcrest Mall located in Richmond Hill, ON.
I was studying photography at Ryerson University and while shopping one weekend in February, I decided to take some quick, practice "snap shots." I used a small, inexpensive, Sears rangefinder camera to be as unobtrusive as possible. Unfortunately, the camera had no flash or exposure control, slow shutter speed (everything blurs) and crude focus - giving the photos a unique, raw, photojournalistic look. While scanning the curled up photos, I couldn't help notice the level of human interaction and participation in the shopping experience that is missing from today's on-line, cell phone addicted culture. I was fortune to work for Sears (Camera Dept.) and Kinney
Shoes at Hillcrest, during the summer breaks.

Go back in time to Langstaff Secondary School 1989. Gregory Rice took a quick visit to the school with his GE VHS Camcorder one January weekend. The tape had been thought missing and erased for over 25 years. While the quality is poor by today's standards, there is still something special about preserving ANY past images. The tape suffered from stability and tracking control and required the us...

Fantastic to see, I love looking at the history of the mall. When I saw there was a loblaws I was confused where that would of been but seeing it was where the lenscrafters & mattress store (formerly bulk barn) it makes sense!

I was born in 79 so all of my memories of Hillcrest are from the 80s and early 90s (we moved away mid 90s). The interior was pretty much intact as the video shows above until their first reno which I think was late 90s? I remember the rounded ceiling awnings, the tree's with those grates, the 70s brick floor and those tiled pillars. This is why I relate to the 70s more than the 80s looking back even though I was pretty much an 80s kid. So many of the places I went still had old 70s interiors and exteriors.
