- This footage comes from "The Bear Bryant Show." The 10-0, #1 Alabama Crimson Tide and the 8-2, #14 Auburn Tigers met at Legion Field in Birmingham, AL for the 1979 Iron Bowl. This served as a de facto SEC championship game, although Alabama entered having already secured at least a share of the conference title. Alabama had a stranglehold on the SEC in the 1970s, winning the conference title 8 times (1971, 1972, 1973, 1974, 1975, 1977, 1978, and 1979).
As my father and his father before me, I am a diehard Bama fan and my children and their children love Bama football. Loved watching this show as a kid---68 years old now and can remember when the whole state would come to a stop to see this. Now years later I still can hear Coach Bryant's gravel voice in my ears.
Glad coach Bryant recruited Peter Kim for 1980. The age of the straight-on was just about coming to an end.
I can still hear my dad laughing and cheering at the screen during these games. This brings back great memories.
Back when chip bags were full and they didn't sell you air.
And also when coca cola tasted better and especially Pepsi. I dont know what happened to pepsi, it tastes terrible now , can't stand it. But Roll Tide anyway.
Lnor pal it's the cocaine they used to put in it.😉👌
They were probably still using cane sugar instead of high fructose corn syrup. Soft drinks were better back then.
Coca-Cola stopped containing any cocaine in 1929. Daniel Crowe is right, the change from cane sugar to high fructose corn syrup is the difference. The corn syrup is worse for you and tastes worse, too.
That was the first thing I noticed
The great Major Olgilvy.
There's nothing more American than Bama football, Coca Cola and Golden Flake!!
"Great pair, says the Bear!" Golden Flake and Coca-Cola, long-time sponsors of the Bear Bryant Show.
Coach Paul "Bear" Bryant A Real Southern Gentleman Friends! Hurricane Frederic had just Ravaged West Alabama! God Bless, Peace, Love and Knowledge!
Not to mention the eastern part of Miss coast!
One of the best Iron Bowls ever!
Bullshit
Watching the coach Bryant show brings back a lot childhood memories. I watched this show when I could back in :the 1970s. This program along with listening to games on radio with John forget made me an Alabama fan creating my passion.
Meant John forney
Our offense sure looks different today! 😂
Bear's last championship team.
Auburn lost, but they played Alabama a great game.

Those Golden Flake potato chips look pretty good!
Don't know if you've ever had them, but to me they taste almost exactly like the "Classic" flavor Lay's potato chips.
I've never had Golden Flake chips. They may only sell them in the Southern states. I live in Kansas. I'll buy a bag of Lays and pretend though! Thanks for the download by the way!
Bama Rewind Yeah, they're not the best chips out there, that's for sure. They're not as good as Lay's original, in my opinion. Golden Flake just doesn't have as much salt or something in them to make them a memorable brand. I think they survived for as long as they did off of being a Birmingham based company that Bama fans were willing to support more than anything else.
I think it's really neat that they remain the official chip of the Crimson Tide to this day. Bama could easily have some big name brand, but I'm glad they are supporting a local business.
My question is: Did they ever eat any of those chips on the show? I've watched a few episode,s so far, and noticed the bowl that they pour those chips on goes untouched. 😆
Were we ranked #1after this game? I've understood that we were #3 after this game.
Memory serves here: Ohio State was #1, USC was #2. But my Tide finished 12-0 while USC went 11-01. They had a legit claim to the National Championship that year. Screw this talk about ancient football! 2016 Alabama 52 USC 6.
No,we were #1 in UPI and #2 in AP after the game
I'm just basing it on what Wikipedia says
@@BamaRewind Going into New Years Day Ohio St was #1 at 11-0 Alabama was #2 at 11-0 and USC was 10-0-1(tie against Stanford) Bama beat Arkansas in the Sugar Bowl and USC squeaked by Ohio St 17-16 in the Rose Bowl. So going into the day three teams could win the National title.
Alabama was No. 1 in the AP poll from its Florida win until this gam. But when Ohio State beat No 2 Michigan at Ann Arbor, Ohio State jumped over Alabama. A lot of Bama fans who remembered the 1977 injustice were afraid that no. 3 USC would jump over Alabama for beating No. 1 Ohio State. Thankfully, it didn't happen.
Roll Tide!!!
Wow, Bama's ball security was crap in the old wishbone days.
Yeah, the wishbone tends to be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, it's tough to defend and it brought Bama's offense to a new level in the golden age of the 1970s. On the other hand, it basically guarantees several fumbles a game.
Not to mention the overall lack of aggression the offensive play calling seems to be accompanied by. Punting appears to have an inflated value as well since so much of the game plan seemingly revolves around the field position first and foremost when calling plays during this era. I can determine that there isn't much urgency on offense in this era either (as a peer down from my balcony seats high above in the 21st century)
It sure cost Bama in 2 games in 1980 in which I believe prevented in what should have been a dream match up for the NC with Georgia on Jan.1 1981 Sugar Bowl.
Guys, I respect your opinions and comments but there's an old saying in football; "When you throw the football, 3 things can happen and 2 of them are bad." Incompletions and interceptions look just as bad as fumbles on stat sheets.
@@danielcrowe9324 An interception is just as bad as a fumble. A fumble is much worse than an incompletion though. An incompletion is the equivalent of a zero yard run.
