#Norway #Russia #Energy
It's weird how they didn't even mention that Norway has had two underwater cables cut already. Or that drones are constantly being observed near oil platforms and energy infrastructure. Those are the two main reasons for hightened caution. It's because it's already happening, not because they're afraid it will start. It's just on a small scale for now. And this report doesn't even mention it by a single word, just that one random richmanson tourist who got caught using a drone.
Because it has not been proven that this was done by Russia. That's what sets our country apart from Russia. Sure, there is a very high probability that this was done by and for the Russian government, but until that has been proven, it's nothing more than speculation and rumours. Not going into those rumours and speculations is what makes DW a great news outlet. At least that's my opinion. Stick to the facts.
And we in Norway are VERY careful not to be overly aggressive and hostile towards our big neighbour to the east. A neighbour we have never fought, always traded and cooperated. Enemies not by design, via loyalties
@@kurtkurtson9111 It was done by someone.
So if it wasn't Russia, there would still be an increased need to highten the security offshore.
These incidents happened and they demand a response of increased security measures. Whether it was Russia that did it or not.
And this report were debating why Norway performed these increased security measures. And so they should have mentioned it, even if there's no evidence that Russia is behind it, it's still very relevant.
And I think DW would have reported on it had they known, I think they simply did not know about these incidents because Norway has done everything it can to done them down. But they're obviously taken very seriously by the government and military.
@@lampegutt123 Well now, that is relative. The only reason we never have been officially at war is because Sweden and mostly Finland is in the way. I remember my grandfather say Finland was a shield and when the Russians attacked them it was like being attacked ourselves. Its why many Norwegians joined the Finnish at that time.
Clear Russian escalation with attacks on NATO, time for NATO to increase military readiness!
The question NATO poses is how vulnerable to NATO attacks is Russia? If Russia attacks Norway then Norway will know how to instigate article 5 and Russia will be subjected to the full wrath of NATO's response. I doubt they will like it.
I do agree with you, but that would also mean Russia would know just how small of a fish it is, America probobly got a greater knowledge of what Russia is capable of then Russia does.
I hope you are right about Norway or any other NATO member being able to instigate Article 5 if necessary, but I fear that the Americans will block it in the event that it is a country that has the capability of hitting the continental USA. We have to remember that Article 5 has ever only been used once in NATO history and that was by the Americans. The second biggest problem is Turkey so long as Erdogan is in power.
@@andrewjones-productions , I certainly would not trust Trump either should he become president again. A horrible idea and it would not surprise me if he sided with Putin.
But as the optimist I am I hope Putin is gone by then.
PS. when was it used by the USA, to be honest I don't think it has been used at all.
And lets not forget that the best type of a defense organization is one that is never threatened.
@@hurri7720 NATO invokes Article 5, of course, not individual member countries... Article 5 was, for the first time in NATO history, invoked on the day after the 9/11 terrorist attacks against USA.

The power grid is likely pretty safe, the pipelines are another thing but we don't rely on those for our own use in a case there they would be destroyed it'd be way worse for Europe's energy than our. It'd hurt our economy tho
Think the electricity prices are bad as they are allready, allthough power grid sharing is possible between countries

Any exposed infrastructure should always be monitored.
Ordinarily, underwater electrical cables and pipelines should be relatively safe from sabotage but Russia has the capability to damage so the lines have to be monitored and protected. Still, you'd think that nowadays that the monitoring can be accomplished largely by remote means, and automated. The human factor should be minimized unless you want to put on a show as a deterrrent.
Exactly. That's what I thought too.
The North Sea underwater installations is patrolled by the German,British,French and Dutch navies as well.
Yep, and we sorely need that help. The Norwegian ocean is a big place with a lot of infrastructure to protect.
Still not enough. Norway have the worlds second largest coastline and vast sea areas. See how the Swedes could not locate the Russian sub in the Baltic ocean, now imagine the area in question here compared to the Baltic scenario.
Make Underground backup power grid.
Norway is a beauty. U lovely people, keep your good hearts active.
And try to be friends with all your neighbours.
You need them at peace with you to Flourish.
Be safe and happy dear Norway.
As a Norwegian !Tusen takk.
Time to look at more widely distributed and localised power and energy distribution networks. Renewables are good. Small nuclear installations look promising. Prepping on a national scale.
I haven't seen a small nuclear installation. Which country do have it?
I Trust in the norwegian Military 💯 percent.Really one of the most Professional Military in Europe
Professional, perhaps, but unlike Ukraine its not battle tested and it is not that large (it cant be, Norway is under 10 million people).
@@GnosticAtheist Sweden has deployed 3 of it's most advanced subs (Gotland class) to the North Sea. -But we keep the rest of them to close Kaliningrad.
@@GnosticAtheist 20 years in Afghanistan, Libya-campaign, Kosovo, Libanon, Northen-Syria and Irak and so on and so on ... to be honest after 20 years in Afghanistan we lost about 10 soldiers, mostly to IED's in combat however they proved very professional and they did their job well. Norway was also one of the last to leave Afghanistan and stayed to protect civilians to the very end. Sure we have not tested our complete defence against a invading enemy but still we do have plenty of combat experience. Our special forces have been in so many scenarios and most of that is still secret 20 years after.
@@arcticblue248 Libya-campaign? What has that campaign consisted of? Later on we may proceed to other "campaigns" and explanations what were norwegian soldiers doing outside of their own borders.
Who still talks about bellingcat?
We here in Norway have been and still are naive towards the possible national security threats that are occurying daily. And althought we are more cautious now and alerted. We still can't do as much as we hope when the people and the government hasn't provided the necessary funds for the Norwegian Armed Forces since the start of the 21st century. It's sad that as one of the founding members of NATO, we do not fulfill the 2% mark for military defense. And the fact that Norway is on a more international scale a notable force in economics, industry and technology. We need to be able to protect it!
So wake your people up, contact your government, let them know how you feel. Then fund what needs to be done.
Scare mongering. Norway should have 100% hydro power and export excess oil and gas
Hacking of IT systems is the big risk
As a Norwegian, this is actually the first time I have heard about this. Yikes
Oh jeez, I'm watching Occupied on Netflix and this feels very much like this situation.
Jeg elsker Norge!
It is not possible for Europe to be independent of Russia gas and oil without Norwegian gas and oil. The problem is that Putin is the kind of man who uses very direct approach on his political rivals as well as economic rivals.
That of course is not true. Many countries sell oil and gas. But I don't think there is any greater risk that Norway was unable to deliver.
I hope our navy could patrol like that diligently
Norway is as safe as...Russian infrastructure is as fragile too
There is no way in earth, Russia would attack Norway, only in a fantasy world.
they should fear Biden if anything
They're not talking about an attack. But an act of sabotage is completely realistic.
You never heard of Putins hybrid warfare, have you
A man with a dream to unify ussr should never be underestimated
I think what norway fear is not an attack like in ukraine, but sabotage on pipelines, hydropower and oil production.
People from this channel really hate Russia 😂
Norway is fine, let's focus on the actual war going on.
You never heard of Putins hybrid warfare i guess
@@apriqui5657 no, its more then that
Why did we never determine who attacked the pipelines? It seems like a core issue that was just strangely brushed away…
Do *you* want a nuclear war?
Pipelines can be rebuilt and are an awful lot cheaper then rebuilding after fighting a costly war on your own territorium...
Not to mention the lives cost...
No one has claimed the attack. There is no proof who did it.
Completely unsafe.
European are afraid sending tanks to ukraine will trigger Russia to be more aggresive, like blowing up the pipe. But Russia also dont want to cause more conflict with other countries because their hands are full.
Yeah for now their hands are full but once they are done in Ukraine they will venture again for their next country to denazify
No ones afraid of Russia anymore after seeing just how bad their military is...
Not true. Here we can clerly see that you do not know history and what was instambul pakt/deal.....
Well they have been disappointed because Germany has since lifted their attempt at preventing the Leopards being sent and Poland has responded by saying with or without German permission they will be supplying 19 Leopards. France is considering sending a number of LeClercs in consultation with NATO partners and of course Britain has already sent the first of the 14 Challenger tanks it has promised along with 30 AS90's, 200 Bulldog tracked APC's and 600 Brimstone missiles.
Norway got a few f-16's they don't need???
@@david4360 Well I for one would be interested to hear what you have to say on that matter. Go ahead, educate everybody.
Better get more submarines. 😒
Truthfully, at any place an aggressor can choose the point of attack. A persuasive and reliable consequence for those who commit these acts is the best defense. Aggressors have to know that counter strikes will result.
I don't know about that.
It's both in Russias and NATOs interest to not acknowledge any attacks made by Russia as Russian if they're relatively small scale like this.
A internet cable or gas pipeline can be repaired unlike dead humans and is an awful lot cheaper then fighting a war and repairing the damages that will result from a war...
Fighting a proxy war in Ukraine suits both sides well.
@@Luredreier Why in the world is NATO's best interest not to acknowledge the Russian attack? Russia should be accountable.
@@lawrencekling8598 Simple.
Nuclear war is extremely expensive, not to mention deadly.
It's cheaper to just accept the loss of some relatively cheap to replace infrastructure then to start a full on war.
A proxy war suits NATO well.
And that's why Russias attacks on NATO is all based around plausible deniability.
Because up to a point it's just better to let them get away with it.
And it has been for a long, long time.
They've been doing this since early in the cold war.
These pipelines contribute to import of oil and export of gas power to Europe and the UK. If they get hit a lot of countries that are not self supplied will struggle. Norway don't use a lot of gas power, due to the high range of mountains they run water turbines.
Intresting fact: if the norwegian fregats get hardly damaged norway wont then be able to repair em because of lack of spare parts and has only three fregats that is war ready. But not able to repairs

Safer than Sweden's power grid
After seeing what is going on in Ukraine, EVERY European country should start the task of getting their electrical grid underground ASAP!
Why would Russia attack Norway ?
Norway can afford to put up a much stronger defense but has not realized the danger from Russia at all. Finland has taken far more responsibility and takes their defense far more seriously. Norway must invest much more in their defense and can afford this with the colossal income that the war in Ukraine has given Norway.
Our income has not actually gone up that much if you consider everything we produce always sell, war or not. However, prices go up because of this nightmare thus money is coming in at a higher rate. That said, much of that additional profit will likely be used in UA investments.
Finland is and always will be our shield. Not because we hide behind them on purpose, but because of physical realities. Russia will have a hard time attacking Norway without first attacking Finland. Norway is also a NATO country and we certainly want Finland to join the alliance.
Our tiny border in the far north to Russia is heavily secured. The other border is Sweden and we do believe the chances of a Swedish attack is rather low, so we where not that concerned. Now however, that is changing.
@@GnosticAtheist Russia is a threat to all countries in the Nordics and Europe. In the Nordics, they constantly threaten attacks with military aircraft that violate the airspace and ships that jam our surveillance. Norway is making good money from their oil and natural gas during the crisis, but not investing in securing their installations that Russia will surely attack in case of war. Norway must secure their installations much better quickly. Russia is a constant threat and has abused Europe's trust.
@@rolfnielsen9644 Well, I am certainly not going to argue that we need to focus on defense but there is a shift in paradigm and money is being focused on military issues related to most such issues. If it is enough is another question that I cannot answer. If/when something happens we will have our answer in the result, and a lot of politicians will end their political careers if the result is bad. Hopefully that is enough incentive for them. All I can say is that the voting public is aware of the issue of terror from Russia and failure from anyone currently in power will result in a powershift, so they have no interest in doing nothing.
@@GnosticAtheist Norway's income hasn't actually gone up that much? Really...? There was "quite an increase" in trade and surplus of 2022, to put it mildly: Norway's 2022 exports gained the largest trade surplus in history, where natural gas export by value nearly tripled from the year before. Other exports (compared to 2021): oil +55%, metals +33%, electrical power +102%, bringing overall mainland export (excl offshore) to +26%. A year ago, SSB stated: "Tidenes største handelsoverskudd i 2021" (a record 2021 trade surplus), only to be beaten by trade year 2022. I suggest the DN business article published last week, on 16 January 2023: "Historisk høy eksport i 2022: Norges handelsoverskudd endte på 1574 milliarder kroner" (2022, historically high trade surplus of NOK 1574 billion).
