This song has the meaning of the reality of life. At some point we must have felt dumped, felt abandoned, felt lost, felt broken, and felt that no one cared. Yes, this song is about someone who is at the lowest point in his life.
I disagree, his voice cracks sometimes and let's not forgetting the fangirls with their awful vulgar voices who sing along, but fi we just count Pierre Bouvier, yeah, he is near as good than his studio perfomance, but the instrumental is less striking.
I think there are plenty of bands that sound good live, you can search UA-cam for "insert song live" and see the same comment about how good they are live. Plenty of good musicians working on their craft to sound good live too ;)

I unconsciously using this song as an anti-depressant back in my grade school and HS years, never fully understood the lyrics.(including linkin park, nickelback, goo goo dolls and Avril lavigne) . now I came back as an adult, reminiscing this song, it kinda hit me differently.. Didn't love it or anything. But now that I'm older, and have experienced life, being kicked when I'm down, being left out in the dark... all while being alone. I'm driving to work and I'm crying because of how much I relate to this song all of a sudden. God damn.
There are a few recording, but with the quality of those days... It wasn't worth it film it, nowadays it's something else, but anyways I think that's disrespectful for the artist.
