  • In this video I will show you how to input your GPS coordinates manually into the Icom IC-9700 and also how to program in manually your HotSpot. I have a SharkRF Openspot2 and the settings in this video are for a OpenSpot2 but most Hotspots you will need to put in very similar settings

    I’m wanting to get into D-Star, I’m just getting back on the air, but this seem so overwhelming to me. I just retired and was looking at the 9700 but only vhf radios I have ever operated were the analog fm rigs. Been a hame since 1977.

      I am glad to hear that you are getting back into the Hobby! Yes I am sure you have realized the big change from what you were use to in the past with Analog transitioning into SDR and more software based rigs! Do not get discouraged though!! When I first Got into to D-Star myself I have to admit it was a bit overwhelming at first but I watched several detailed videos on D-Star and how it works and how to get registered for D-Star, but ounce I got up and running with it I was very pleased and happy that I did as I love D-Star. I currently have several D-star Repeaters I can hit from my QTH but I also have my OpenSpot 2 Hotspot (which functions like my own personal D-star Repeater)! So just take it slow and take some time to watch some UA-cam videos to help bring you up to speed and ounce you have and get up and running I am sure you will be happy that you are! I really enjoy my 9700 it is very easy to use and operate and intuitive far better than some other manufacturers that have very menu driven radios! I don’t yet use my 9700 at it’s full potential but I like to know that the extra features are there when I am ready plus the waterfall display is useful in finding those Simplex conversations you may not otherwise even know were happening! 73’s and thank you for watching and commenting K4BBC

      Thanks for the reply, I just bought the 7610 for HF, and was going back and forth on the D-star radio. I was just wondering which would you suggest, the 9700 or the IC 5100a Deluxe? I’m considering two of the 5100’s, one mobile and one as a base station or 9700 as a base and 5100 in the mobile. Any suggestions?

    • @PrecisionGroupYT
      @PrecisionGroupYT  3 роки тому

      Congratulations on the 7610 that was the HF rig I wanted next but lately I have been leaning towards the Yaesu FT-DX101D or MP! While I do not own a 5100 I have heard they are excellent especially mobile but my suggestion would be get the 9700 for the house (as it’s all band all mode and would complement your new 7610) and get the 5100a for you vehicle! 73’s

      The 101D/MP are great rigs, the only thing that turned me off about it was the scope doesn’t have averaging and doesn’t have the connectivity that the 7610 does, you must have the external LAN for it and the Icom has its own ip built in. Otherwise it’s a great rig. Thanks for all the advice.

    Hi, I following your video to the detail. Hitting first problem. When entering the lat long manually it will not accept it. I live in North Wales UK, my Latitude is 52.942560 But the rig will not let me enter above 52.5999, do I need to have an Ethernet cable connected before starting the process. Bob MW0RHD

      @PrecisionGroupYT  Рік тому

      Hi Bob you should not need an either net cable! One issue I can think of is since I made this video Icom has upgraded the firmware which may cause an issue. Now without being there to try a few things to get the radio to take your coordinates I would put an email into Icom’s tech support or give them a call. I apologize that I can’t be of more help to you for this issue! 73

    So once I have the hotspot connected where do I go from there. Another words how can I find activity or do you have a video on changing rooms or reflectors as I think D-STAR calls them.

    • @PrecisionGroupYT
      @PrecisionGroupYT  3 роки тому +1

      Hi Kevin, in conjunction with your radio your hotspot basically functions like a Repeater so you would put the HotSpot information in your saved memory channels and then put the 9700 into DR mode and select your saved Hotspot memory channel and ounce you have done this then you will select what Reflectors or Repeaters you want to connect to! I may be able to do a short video showing how to do this with the 9700 on D-Star and a hotspot if you wish. 73’s K4BBC

    I seem to have to program my Callsign in the Memory as B or the Hotspot does not respond. Still not sure if I've got things right when it comes to trying to make a QSO - I can hear activity, but can't seem to find the right settings to make myself heard.

      Hi Stewart Wilkinson, What HotSpot are you using?
      Yes with different HotSpots you might have to put different settings in there then what I showed on the video! You would have to refer to your HoTSpot’s Directions. With the SharkRF Openspot2 that I am using the settings for “Call Sign and Gateway are as I showed in the video. Now ounce those settings are correct you should be able to get out on your HotSpot just make sure that when your on a Reflector that you change the “TO:” settings to Use Reflector other wise no one will hear you! I hope this helps you out and Thank You for Watching and Commenting 73’s K4BBC

    Good videos and this one, in particular, seems to be drop-dead simple but when I deliberately and carefully following the add a hotspot manually instructions when I'm done I have defined the hotpot unique to my call and frequency when I attempt to select it from the list of NEAR repeaters it doesn't populate the From portion of the DSTAR. screen and instead just stays highlighted in the NEAR repeater selection list. Does this mean it's not correctly defined as a repeater since I'm unable to properly select it?

    • @PrecisionGroupYT
      @PrecisionGroupYT  4 роки тому +2

      Hi Phil. Thank you for your kind remarks! First question did you Manually input your GPS position in your 9700? When entering your hotspot info did you leave the Duplex on (DUP-)? If you turn off the Duplex then your radio will not recognize your HotSpot with the near Repeater Function as it will not think your HotSpot is a Repeater. Set the Frequency offset to 0.000 and make sure you enter the GPS coordinates for your HotSpot when entering it in the Memory Channel. Also when using the near Repeater Function you need to be on 2M if your HotSpot is a 2M frequency or 70cm if it’s a 70cm frequency as the 9700 can not be on the same Frequency (2M or 70cm on VFO A & B at the same time! I hope this helps! Let me know 73 K4BBC

      @@PrecisionGroupYT - Yes I had previously entered my GPS Lat and Long manually.
      I was able to get it to work using the RTSystems programming software and defining it the same way you described and it worked. I'm not sure why I wasn't able to do this manually but following the same procedure in the RT Systems programming software the repeater I defined for the Hotspot works like a champ. I think I would Title the video "Icom 9700 Programming an OPENSPOT 2 Manually FOR DR MODE use" This would not be the way to use a PI-STAR MMDVM. Thanks for mentioning your Hotspot brand was an OPENDPOT2.

    • @PrecisionGroupYT
      @PrecisionGroupYT  2 роки тому

      Sorry you were disappointed! In the description it does state that this is for the SharkRF OpenSpot2 but perhaps it would have been better to state this in the title! But as I only have the Openspot2 hotspot I would not know how to program other hotspot types and had assumed others would adjust this information to work for their specific hotspot (ie frequency, repeater etc.)

    How do you pick the frequency? Does it have to link to another repeater?

    • @PrecisionGroupYT
      @PrecisionGroupYT  3 роки тому

      You can manually put in the frequency or for example for D-Star the 9700 has a list of D-star Repeaters that you can choose based off your GPS location or you can just manually choose them from a list in the radio! You can also load a list of D-star Repeaters and FM Repeaters to the SD card from the internet so you wouldn’t manually have to put in and save the Repeaters manually! I hope this answers your question 73

      @@PrecisionGroupYT I use a 9700 with a preloaded list of repeaters. Do i pick a frequency that is local on that list? So does my Hotspot link to their DStar reflector frequency? instead of using their "From" setting but my "Hotspot"? I tested it with a random freq and it failed to connect.

    • @PrecisionGroupYT
      @PrecisionGroupYT  3 роки тому

      Ok I hope I am understanding your question correctly! Are you trying to connect the 9700 to your hotspot? If so the Frequency you set up with programming in your hotspot is the frequency that is listed or programmed on your hotspot..... But when you Program the hotspot into the 9700’s Repeater List you are going to set the offset to zero this tricks the 9700 into believing your hotspot is a Repeater......I hope this helps 73.
