BTS also have the perfect formula for longevity, something other groups don’t always have. Lots of boy bands disband because they want to go in a new direction in music and being in a group limits them, but BTS have artistic liberty to do what they want. They can tell any story they want in any style they want. From the very beginning and to this day they release solo music where they can express their unique identity. I think this will help them stay together for a very long time.
exactly! they've had experiences before offically going solo. i see a lot of groups going solo, and they often dont know what they even like or want, they have to go through a full identity crisis/ discovery journey, before presenting their 'new' self. a journey like that, if youve never experienced before, can feel like such a rush, and end in an extreme. as in, groups disband completely, because the taste of a solo career was so overwhelming, or groups being completey disjointed, because members cant see themselves as non-soloist anymore, and want to remain the center of attention. bts is so cohesive and balanced, its genuineely amazing to see. and even when all members went solo, and talked about trying things out, in the end it always suited the member 100%, no one did an identity crisis 180 (if that makes sense lol). they already had their own sound, only developed and perfected it, where others completely lose or re-invent themselves, for better or worse, and changing their entire groups dynamic. sorry for the long comment lol
Girly needs a Million Subscribers. You’re basically the best Army channel on UA-cam in terms of Bts’s music! The editing, the voice over, and the vibes, REALLY TOP-TIER!🫶🏻✨
These words could easily be taken out of context to make you/us look bad but I think I get what you mean. Out of the groups in the video BTS is the only one that truly has 'it'. And that's not something a producer can just fabricate, that's why they keep failing.
I think the idea that 'authentic' and 'star' are opposites is completely false, and one of the (many) things that makes BTS stand out from the crowd is that they fully embrace this fact. So much of their work explicitly comments on their identity as artists, 'idols' and human beings, and they actually delve into the complexity and messiness of being a person with many layers, aspects, and personas, the interplay between 'performance' and 'reality'. They don't say "I'm a star, I'm untouchable, worship me" and they don't say "I'm the boy next door! I'm just like you! I'm nothing special :)" they say “I’m a star, and I’m going to use my finely-honed talents to put on a breathtaking show, but I’m also a real person working incredibly hard behind the scenes. I’m expressing my deepest emotions through music and writing about raw personal experiences, but no I’m not going to tell you who I’m dating. I’ll perform the most amazing dance routine you’ve ever seen, and I’m also going to vlog about the hours of gruelling practice that went into creating it. In photoshoots I look dramatic and otherworldly, but I’ll also show myself getting the makeup put on and talking about the concept of the styling, then you can flip to the other channel and see me going on a trip with my best friends, waking up with bedhead and no makeup." Another thing I want to emphasise is that Western groups have the luxury of appearing ‘relatable’ and ‘simple’ but BTS did not. Bangtan NEEDED to amaze people, they needed to put on the most show-stopping performance ever, because they had so many factors working against them. It’s the same thing many POC will recognise; they had to work 10 times as hard as these white American artists to get half the recognition. They had to make themselves impossible to ignore. They had to come up with something completely unique and memorable. If they had put on plaid shirts and jeans and stood on stage with an acoustic guitar singing cute pop songs, no one would ever have heard of them, they'd never have made it past performing in clubs for 200 people. Not only were they disadvantaged as non-white, non-Western artists, they were also coming from a situation with very few resources to back them up. They couldn’t afford any moments of failure. I was watching someone react to one of their early dance practices a while ago, and he was really amazed, leaning into the screen, and he said “wow, they’re just… so passionate, you can see it in their eyes and the way they move, it’s like they’re hungry for it” and I had to reply that yes I knew what he meant, but also they were literally hungry for it. They were sharing one room with as many as 11 people (as trainees), they didn’t have enough beds so some would sleep on the floor, their basement practice studio leaked every time it rained, and they pulled in an old mattress they found on the street so they could sleep over to get more practice hours. They’ve talked about spending hours literally practicing to synchronise their eye movements during choreo, to make every detail supernaturally perfect, because they knew they'd be lucky to even get one shot to perform, so it had to be unforgettable. Like…. these Western groups from big labels just don't understand what it means to NEED to impress people like that. Even if they were part of a competition or similar, the attitude is completely different. There's an underlying assumption that they can just 'be themselves' and that will be good enough. The world has always told them that would be good enough. BTS are not coming from that background, they knew the world wouldn't make space for them in the same way. Another thing is BTS have always had a very strong message in their music. They’ve always had a kind of ‘higher’ motivation to become famous, which is to deliver that message through their lyrics, videos, and performances. These Western pop groups might be concerned with making sure people don’t think they’re ‘cringy’ or ‘inauthentic’ and wanting to seem ‘cool’ and ‘relatable’ because that’s their primary purpose: to have people think they’re cool and relatable, to have a marketable image. BTS does not have the same purpose. They change their image frequently to fit the message in whichever song or album they’re currently promoting. That doesn’t mean they’re any less authentic, it means they’re putting the art first, before their brand. They’re here primarily to promote their artistic message, not their celebrity image. As Namjoon rapped in Ddaeng “we celebrate rather than being celebrities.” The truth is that Disney Channel ‘authenticity’ was never really authentic. Those clips you showed were great examples, the ‘good guys’ are wearing just as much of a costume as the ‘bad guys’. Their jeans and t-shirts are just as much intentional fashion choices as wigs and glitter. Their low-effort performances with acoustic instruments are no more ‘authentic’ than someone who practiced hard to perform a dance routine with a backing track. Neither choice is wrong, they’re both legitimate ways to perform. But by labelling themselves as "more authentic" for wearing basic American fashions, or singing in a particular style, or carefully curating their image to never seem like they’re “trying too hard” the protagonists actually show they don’t understand what authenticity truly is. They’re performing an image of authenticity based on a very specific set of standards... the aesthetic of 'authenticity'. What BTS do is lay the whole façade bare, they show the whole thing. They give you the performance of a lifetime, and also show you how the magic trick was done behind the scenes. They create moments of true emotional expression on stage, where you can see there are no layers of pretence at all, but they also don’t try to trick you into believing they’re ‘just some guy’ who stumbled onto the stage without practicing. They talk openly about how difficult it is to do what they do. They constantly write lyrics deconstructing the concepts of ‘celebrity’ and ‘authenticity’ and delve into the complexity and messiness of their own identities. They directly address those topics in their lyrics more incisively than almost any other artist I can think of, to be honest!
What a well written opinion, I agree. And that's why the Black Swan MV without BTS members or Domodachi exist too. Artistry goes first, even if that means not including themselves, their faces, into it
@@sarawho Absolutely! They've always prioritised art and message above all else. That reminds me of the whole promotion period for MOTS 7: they had a huge project called 'Connect, BTS' where they sponsored a bunch of artists around the world (a lot of whom were specifically from marginalised backgrounds) to create new works, and then put on free gallery shows for the public. I was so blown away and so moved by that, I've never seen anything like it from any artist! They really just gave a bunch of money to a bunch of independent artists, and then gave them gallery shows and promoted them for free, and let the public access it for free. Just for the sake of it. They put a lot of money into that, and didn't profit from it. They could have done a much simpler, more traditional promotion for their album and they still would have been just as successful. But they wanted to make a point about the importance of art, accessibility, and people coming together around the world to connect with each other through that experience... seriously, who else is doing things like that??
I want to like this 100 times. You write so well. 👏 BTS are just true artists and we are so blessed to live in this time where they are actively carving their own path and building on their already huge legacy day by day.
@@sarawho can you believe that what attracted me to BTS is a music video WITHOUT BTS!!! the incredible artistry of the Black Swan MV with the dancers in an abandoned building made me rethink my idea of a kpop group..unfortunately there are no other groups like them they are one of a kind..so, no, I am not a kpop fan..I AM A BTS FAN!
This video is how i found out that bigbang of all groups relased an english album nearly 17 years ago. The hypocrisy of kpop fans to lambast BTS for 5 songs entirely in english is even laughable with that context
As a person who was not interested in the music industry and everything related before finding bts your videos are very informative and helpful. The videos are well edited the information is well presented and explained so everyone can understand the message, I want to say thank you for your work 💜
seriously, the dichotomy between BTS's mind-blowingly intimidating artistry onstage vs. their puppylike regular everyday personas is super captivating. Nobody else does it like they do!
As someone who witness the music revolution from the 70's until now, I've never felt connected to the artist. I usually know groups but I don't know members' name (sounds familiar😅). I like some of their songs but I don't follow their journey. They tried to be normal but their lives is far from normal. I don't feel they are part of us. Maybe because most of the time they distanced themselves from other people. That was until BTS. I love their sound but I was forced by my kids to learn about them😂. The more I learn about them, the more I feel that they are normal people but with talent. The way they appreciate their fans makes you feel like you're special. Tq boracity for this video👍💜
There is a definition of genius: "He looks like everyone, but no one is like him." And this "more" ingredient is probably the most important one. Many artists tell stories about themselves, but BTS's stories are deeper and more beautiful, and in k-pop, many are good at performing, but BTS's performances are more memorable, they work harder, give more, and are more devoted to music. This ingredient of "more" may not be that big, but it's always present in everything they do - the video game and the amazing soundtracks to it, BT21 (I never thought I'd be able to cry like that over a puppy with a harmonica). And all this delightful and exhausting energy exchange with ARMY. "Whoever gives, gets. Whoever forgets himself finds himself again." The Phoenix always burns down.
BTS put SO much into their work. Their level of effort is amazing, from perfecting every detail and creating elaborate narratives with hours of extra content, to pushing themselves physically for a show-stopping performance, to writing hundreds of hand-written notes to fans for a birthday project, to opening up about their most personal and difficult experiences through art, allowing themselves moments of true vulnerability in front of millions of people. I'm a little confused with the example of video games or the BT21 soundtrack, since BTS weren't involved in creating either of those things... but having said that I think it's important to also give credit to the other creative people they collaborate with. The members are at the heart of everything, of course, but there are so many people working hard behind the scenes to give us the full experience of 'BTS' that we enjoy. That's something that comes with starting from the bottom at an independent label, and committing to a company culture of prioritising artistic output. Also just being lucky enough to meet some really talented and loyal people! Singers who start at a huge company are basically handed success, the company is much more likely to simply create an image for them, and direct everything they do, with a whole campaign worked out in advance to maximise results. BTS didn't have that, everything was worked out from scratch, gradually, and every new step they took grew directly from what came before. At each stage of their career they've written music about exactly what they were going through at that time. I really hope they manage to maintain their independence and always keep good people around them. Big Hit is still a creatively independent label, they negotiated a special clause for that when HYBE was created. I think staying true to their own vision, telling their own stories, and refusing to compromise on quality is an ethic which has brought them to this level of success, and if they stick with that they can have a very long and fulfilling career!
@shockofthenew Thank you for your comment, your words are so sincere and beautiful! Regarding video games, I'm referring to the full-fledged BTS World album and the sea of content for this game, practically a movie of seven mini-stories. Of course, BTS doesn't do everything by themselves, and their success is due to the efforts of many people. However, everything related to them has this one... vibe? It is difficult to formulate how the sign "Made by bantan". Of course, they didn't create BT21, they only gave it a direction, but again, BT21 has a lot of their personality, their stories, and cartoons are very deep in meaning, touching on many psychological problems and topics that BTS is close to - friendship, loneliness, haters, etc. But this is just a commercial project! Dolls that any k-pop band releases now! That's why I'm mentioning BT21 as another "more" BTS.
@@ludmilasimchenko239 Ah, yes I see what you mean! I agree, it's like the whole 'BTS' project is so well thought out, and they (the members, company, collaborators) go all-out putting so much effort in every detail, so the whole thing has a similar feeling and consistent message. They don't half-ass things or do quick cash-grabs, they try to make everything worthwhile for the fans. BT21 is a good example of that actually, when you compare it to a lot of other kpop groups who all created characters after BT21 was successful, most of them are pretty bland and just made to sell merch. But BT21 (even though it's obviously also made to sell merch) had a whole video series showing the members designing the characters and storylines, and then the team took those ideas and created so much original content that's genuinely really well-made and atmospheric, and all for free. I would enjoy BT21 even if I wasn't a fan of BTS honestly! You could say "well BTS is successful so they have lots of money to put into things" but actually it reminds me of the first ever little characters they made back in the day, the 'Hip Hop Monsters'. Back then they had almost no resources, but Big Hit prioritised paying a talented artist to come and spend time with BTS in their daily schedule and get to know them, so they could create characters that actually fit the members' personalities and lifestyle. They made a bunch of comics that were genuinely funny and 'in-character' for BTS. Paying for that must have been really expensive at the time, but they always made that extra effort for the fans!
Wonderful video!! With BTS I always think about how they each had different goals starting out. RM and Suga wanted to rap, write, and produce. Jhope wanted to dance and pursue hip hop. Jin wanted to entertain, Jimin wanted to dance, Jungkook and V wanted to sing. They all wanted to share their talents, passions, and personalities, and to be loved. All these men with different goals could have pursued the paths laid out to specialize in these things but they all would have remained small time. Instead they entrusted their goals to the idol world. They made sacrifices to learn the parts they were bad at, they leaned on each other, committed to each other and eventually skyrocketed to greater heights than they would have been able to achieve alone. Because they embraced the world of Idol-hood: the flashyness, the group dynamic, the pageantry, NOW they have the fame to show the world all the things they originally wanted to show. The rappers are rapping, the dancers are dancing, the singers are singing and they're all entertaining. They all have a highly diverse profile of skills they wouldn't otherwise have gained AND the platform to showcase the things they love individually BECAUSE they sacrificed the individualistic metaility and banded together to do it.
The last sentence is just right! Everyone is waiting for the grand return of BTS!)) Because it's going to be really Big! And I am sure that they will never shake up the entire industry in a way that no one has ever managed before!
Spot on again Bora. Tbh, you're fresh air to us. Always giving BTS their flowers and providing a very justified and truthful counter to the constant anti-BTS sentiment that still exists during their break.
Like you said, I'm also excited to see what BTS will do after they come back. As we all know, they are going to excel in whatever they choose to do but I know that they are going to a bit different in the sense that they have grown. Especially since they all have had solo releases (That have shown them in a new light and probobly deepened their artistry)
Fantastic as always. One thing I can say-maybe it’s unpopular- is: it’s too nice to only blame other groups’ labels and producers regarding creativity and capability. One way I’ve seen certain fandoms shoot themselves in the foot is claiming their group or favorite artist has majority rule over their own music…but then the music is stagnant, inauthentic, etc. or just plain uninspiring. Or “safe”. Sometimes, certain artists/groups simply don’t have much to offer in terms of songwriting, sound, or concept; and that’s fine for them, but, eh…we can’t pretend every single artist is a hidden genius being held back by higher ups every single case.
I can think of 2 groups that would greatly benefit from producers from outside the group making music for them, I’m not gonna name them bc my point isn’t to create conflict, but them being self produced doesn’t make the music good
This. For a long time people used to say BTS were special because they had more creative control than their peers (other 3rd generation kpop groups) but we're onto 5th gen now, and there have been several groups since who have been "allowed" to self compose, write and produce (and in one particular case as a way to directly position/market themselves as a BTS successor/ "next bts"). Yet their music is nowhere near close to BTS. Some of them are quite popular too and often cited as "authentic" kpop, but I listen to their songs and think to myself "wtf are they even singing about" sometimes. It's the same quality level of slop tiktok music and nonsensical/goofy lyrics that "manufactured" kpop groups make. Artistic freedom =/= Artistic talent or vision.
Yes!!! I agree so much with this!!! I am thinking from some things they have said about maturity and honesty that they may want to push in a more experimental and mature direction when they come back and im so excited to see whatever they do! I think it will be so interesting how they explore going through their 30s and continuing to be a successful group and how they will show their maturity in their self expression and their art while also keepi g their youthful fun...you think about boy groups in the past and especially in the west, they often break up for a while in their 30s and then come back as almost a nostalgia group, not really growing artistically anymore and just leaning on performing their past hits. In kpop too, you have the 7 year curse, but older groups exist but they are kind of put on a back burner while younger groups are promoted and the members go do other things and they perform together here and there for nostalgia. That is ok that they do that but I really think BTS are going to break this mold and still bring a ton of creative energy to the group as they simultaneously try new projects individually. You can tell by how they talk about their creative process that they all sound curious and excited about paving a new path as they figure out how to express themselves and perform as bts until they are old men and maybe they wont want to stop even then. I am really looking forward to them breaking more boundaries for what it can look like to age in a singing group. And im looking forward to experiencing my own 30s with them. :)
I agree with all of this! I really can't predict what kind of music they're going to make when they reunite, but that's what's exciting! I can foresee them making music in so many genres, ranging from fun accessible pop hits all the way to experimental genre-fusions. I really do believe they have potential to keep going for decades, expanding their range and reinventing themselves. They seem to have genuine passion for music, a lot they want to say... and they have a kind of restless energy about them, in a good way! I don't see them fading into comfortable irrelevance the way a lot of groups do, where they just rehash the same sound and do nostalgia tours to perform oldies. I also think it's very important that they all work well as solo artists, they have such different styles, and all of them contribute creatively to the group, bringing those styles together. A lot of groups have all their music created by a company, so when the company decides it's time to move on to promoting the hot new rookies, the older group loses access to their songwriters. Other groups only have one or maybe two members who contribute creatively, so it's very easy for them to get burnt out, or start recycling the same ideas. It also means the members who aren't creatively involved are more likely to get bored or dissatisfied, and that can lead to arguments, or members leaving. With BTS they have 7 creative talents, working in every genre under the sun, so they have endless opportunities to try different styles. And if in the future they go back and forth between group work, solo work, and subunits, that gives them some space to rest without losing momentum. One member can be promoting a solo album while others recharge and get time for their personal lives. Then the next member can take over, and so on. Then once they're recharged they can come together for a new group album. I think something like this could be sustainable long-term even as they have families etc. Most importantly, BTS have truly amazing relationships. The number one thing that usually tears groups apart is the members falling out, or just not being that close in the first place and losing interest in working together. I don't see that happening with BTS. Not only do they genuinely love and trust each other, they've always been willing to put their egos aside for the sake of the team. I really do have faith in BTS to avoid the fate of other 'boybands' before them. I don't even compare them to other boybands in my mind. I see them as being artists more in the style of David Bowie, who reinvented himself in so many different styles over the years, and remained famous and artistically relevant into his 60s (and would have gone further if he'd lived longer). Here's to BTS staying healthy, having a long career, and sometime in the distant future making that 'Bangtan retirement village' they once talked about, where they can all live with their families 💜
Well said! I've always joked that the only time I'll be able to see BTS is when we're both 50 and they do a legacy tour hahaha so don't discount that! We'll have to see what they do and how they do it but I think they'll all stay in the industry and be happy together. Whether as an active group or as 7 artists who love each other and cheer each other on and meet up for lunch once a week, we can look forward to many years of them. 💜
Imagine the ticketing blood bath for a legacy tour, all the folks in their 50s-70s who've grown with BTS 😭 But I'm looking forward to it. Think of all the armys who feel a little sad about joining "later" whether that was 2016 or during the pandemic or in ch 2 era - we're all actually getting in on the ground floor of a career that may well span several decades!
Never quite exactly articulated it that way how one of the factor of bts' global success was not just the void left after 1d but also how they balanced/outdid groups in both industries but especially both audiences (and beyond because as you also said i and probably many others never been into vocal groups like that before)! Super interesting take and convo that just further proves how bangtan is a once in a lifetime act !
On a side note, it's interesting how the western groups were focused on being their authentic self and be themselves, but couldn't so musically (as once said by Zayn). I also can't help but think, if individual members were focus on being themself and not be matchy/united, then wouldn't it suit them to be a solo artist than a group artist? A group artist, arguably, should be working together and look united to some level, instead of a mess for westerns groups. Yet, not so extreme like kpop groups where the individual members don't have their own identity withint he group. I truly believe BTS found a balance between the two; being a united team but also their individual talent and persona.
Nailed it... A-GAIN! - (And I cannot WAIT for BTS's comeback.) I agree that something, "ANYTHING", different would have been good for some of the groups hoping to break out during the BTS "hiatus". But the producers of those groups have no real clue how to do that! And this video hits the nail on the head: We laugh (hard!), we cry, we celebrate with them, we fight for them... and then they get on stage and are AMAZING to boot! It's the best of both worlds. One of the things that really drew me into the rabbit hole was all the "dichotomy" videos out there, lol. 'The dichotomy of this member and of that one." - Having their music & lyrics reflect their own inner life, and THEN seeing them be silly & complete goofballs one minute and sexy beyond belief the next minute is magic.
I think a lot of it also has to do with the fact that bands are built on community & community is almost mocked and not appreciated enough in the west while individualism has been put on a pedestal. Neither community nor individualism are bad things but West treats the former as an immature and childish gimmick. I remember once there was this tweet with thousands of likes tweeted by an American that said "do not contact me to help you move out if you are my friend" and people were shocked as to what US citizens considered friendship to be. This has led to a lot of nuanced and brilliant conversations online regarding the stance of western culture in this matter. These values are not inherent to Asia, our culture and values are deeply rooted in the sense of having each others backs and looking out for each other.
There are music communities which are not online, or which were created before online spaces were created. They are older communities. If you want to learn about some of those communities please go watch the Hope on the Street Vol 1 series by that brilliant j-hope
Oh this is gold... You explain BTS circumstances and impact so well and put it into perspective. Actually thank you so much for doing this: taking things about and aspects of BTS story (many ARMYs probably have thought about and maybe discussed before) but actually taking the time and effort to create well made cohesive videos about these important and interesting topics 💜 🙏😊
Boracity you nailed it again!! The fact that we don't know what BTS will do next always keep us on our toes!! Our anticipation combined with their exceptional comebacks always creates the explosive combination we all know! Thank you for your amazing videos !
To be honest I don't know any of this Boy- or Girl Groups since 2007. I heard of One Direction but I think to this day I never heard one single song from them. At some point of life you are just not interested in this concept anymore. I think when someone turns 30 one is looking more for serious music that will make you think/reflect not that you exclude fun dance music at all, but you don't get devoted nor buy the Albums. The more I think about it, the more greatful I am that BTS found me when I needed them. Our guys are a miracle. Love your Video. Since I am in Austria and it's about zero o'clock here I was hoping for a life from you, and I started looking every 5 min if it has started and then I saw a new Essay from Boracity🎉🎉🎉 Thank you so much for your great work. I can't wait for the next Live💜💜 Happy holidays
You managed to say every single thing I had in my mind all thso time. THIS is so true . BTS is a once in a life time big phenomena and their success cannot ever be matched by other groups and they are coming back soon to change the industry again
I feel like while western groups of the 2010s focused on presenting themselves as 'real' which well more or less translated into low effort homogeneity, bangtan kept a balance between who they were behind the scenes and how much seriously they thought of their art and performance on camera. I remember the biggest reason of me welcoming them was when I saw them live on SNL and I was blown away by the coherence and dedication they presented on stage. While I am not putting down other stars or groups by saying they don't care to bond enough or take serious what they do but with BTS, it's like there's a balance of their love for their work and their fans and both of those things keeps them going and relevant because they stand behind whatever they present rather than passing it off as just a phase or a trend. Not only do they present incredible art but it's also the connection they've built over the year with fans wanting to tell them how much they care and want to be listened rather than isolating themselves to the mold of being a star like famous groups did before them be in the west or the kpop world.
I love this and your videos! Keep on shining! Yes, they’re great performers and yet authentic. A big reason why I and many fans connect with BTS is their message and vulnerability. They’re not afraid to be vulnerable with us. They save so many Armys because we feel seen and heard and loved and we share all their frailties and human limitations which they’re not afraid to share with us despite being the biggest group in the world. Their underdog story is also very relatable. And their love yourself campaign really resonated and saved so many. They love us and each other dearly. I don’t see other groups do the same.
I learned so much about entertainment and music industry because of BTS . Am grateful to your intensive knowledge boracity, and for sharing your time and efforts so we know better. Carry on girl... I look forward to your BTS contents.
There is a lot I agree with here. However, SO MANY fans of BTS -- myself included -- have never listened to boy bands. We are aware of their songs (mostly ironically) but never sought them out and never took them seriously. So, in that sense, BTS isn't filling a "gap" for me -- they carved out something completely new. This doesn't mean I am now looking to be entertained by other boy groups, and I certainly am not a general kpop fan. BTS is something else apart entirely.
This is such a thoughtful analysis, and I love how you've explored the evolution of groups in detail, especially the differences between Western groups and K-pop. Although this video focuses on group work, one must take into consideration that One Direction's later imagery really reflected their transition toward solo careers. As the group was nearing its end, their individual personas naturally started to influence their group presentation. Their shift to a raw, real-world aesthetic didn't dovetail with trends at the time, simply because they weren't following them-they were preparing for their next chapter as solo artists. Which makes their approach all the more intentional and forward-thinking, even if nobody realized it at the time. Rather than calling it "ugly," it's almost interesting to note how their later group visuals bridged the gap with their solo work, in the same way RM's imagery now really connects deep with his personal artistry. Both approaches highlight the different ways artists balance individuality against group dynamics. Thanks for such an entertaining video.
I think BTS bridged the gap between the 2 industries and there was a need for someone to do that. I also think BTS has a dance troupe's level of talent and performance, all 7 members have it. They move and think as a dance troupe and that's powerful
I'm still a blockhead (NKOTB fan) and now a baby army too. So i can tell the differences, but also de influence of bts and kpop industry in my beloved NKOTB. Their last album has an special edition launched in a box with a photobook and photocards, polaroids and a board game. They made a challenge in a location and, when i saw the tiktok videos, i thought they were in a hybe practice room. Also i watched then making kind of an unboxing video of that special edition. It seems like Donnie is an army, too. And i love them more for that. Maybe in a couple of years a boracity video could be about how boybands in the western took inspiration from bts. Off topic: my bias in nkotb is Joe, who was the one covered I'll be there by the Jacson 5 and is a Frank Sinatra fan. They made a Disney's special called Wildest Dreams and Joey's one was him singing Please don't go girl in a Singing in the rain style location. And my bias in bts is V. I'm suprised by the coincidence, because Taehyung is my bias before i watched le jazz or layover tiny desk. Seems like i have a type. By the way, i love and respect your work and dedication a lot. Saludos, mi gente latino.
BoraCity need to rewarded for her hard work & also need to get paid big for these videos. The way she can break everything down is amazing. It speaks about the amount of research & dedication she does every time she pits out a video. It’s never half ass down. Army are lucky to have her as part of the fandom. I just hope more Army can watch & boost her videos because they are thorough & very on point. Thank you Bora! Always appreciate you girl for all you do. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I think I never say this but i love you boracity, thanks for always speaking the truth and supporting bts, me as army i feel so happy seeing how you can explain so well the impact that bts had and has in the whole music industry 💜
BTS is a story of achieving unity out of very different personalities, and yet the members never lost their individuality. But that required a lot more effort than putting forward "normalcy" and individuality does. I'm not saying the Western group did not put in effort, but it was certainly less, and it was misdirected.
It’s so interesting bc I think this is also inherent in cultural aspects, with the West leaning more towards individualism and the East towards collectivism. And somehow, BTS is the perfect blend of both. I think them being so well-versed in Western music, esp hip-hop, their roots in a collectivist country, Bighit’s direction and circumstances, and their love for each other just clicked together like fate and created incredible harmony and synergy while still maintaining individuality. And it’s crazy that the 90s’ Western groups need archetypes to create individuality, and I can tell that Bighit tried to do the same at first after Jin revealed that his image was supposed to be the cold and quite guy, and Jimin to be the masculine, charismatic guy. But BTS broke the mold after so many years in the industry and realized that they’re already different individuals themselves. Why need archetypes to distinguish one member from another when they can just be themselves?
It's funny now thinking they actually did try to fit certain archetypes at the beginning, but they really couldn't keep it up for 5 minutes! Their real personalities always came through, and they dropped that strategy very quickly. Honestly (as a long-time fan) I'd say Big Hit didn't exactly know what they were doing at first... They really were a small company with less than 20 employees and BTS was their first ever idol group, they'd only briefly produced for a couple of groups from other companies before that. So they tried a bunch of strategies like the 'archetypes' at the very beginning, but quickly seemed to realise that actually BTS' strength was in their real, unique personalities, and writing their own music with their own message.
@@shockofthenew yeah as BTS grows the label also grows. I think BTS in chapter 2 has even more artistic freedom than before, especially after they re-signed their contract. One of the most impressive things for me is how Bighit seriously considers their opinions and puts them into practice, like Namjoon's initiatives in gender equality study and music training system. I also remember him opposing transitioning into NFTs photo cards and the company (now Hybe) listened and dropped the idea completely. They also allowed the boys to cut their own hair (to an extent lol) and moderate drinking, which had been banned before. Tbh, I do understand the reasoning behind micro-managing idols from K-pop labels to avoid scandals. That's why I consider Bighit to be very lucky to find such understanding, smart and genuinely good guys like BTS. BTS understand the weight behind their actions, are hard-working, resilient and lovely people. They know their responsibilities as public figures and act accordingly on their own awareness that the company soon realized that there's no need to micro-manage them.
Boracity I hope you make a video also about: (This is only a request) People should acknowledge more how BTS played a huge role in making South Korean culture known globally. It feels like some people keep denying that they’re the main reason behind it. What’s even more frustrating is how so many groups-whether it’s their company, the government, the K-pop community, or even ARMYs sometimes-seem to want to control BTS. The truth is, no one should try to control them. They’re not superheroes meant to solve everyone’s problems or be a shield for anything. They’re artists, and they deserve to live their lives freely without being treated like tools. It’s just so unfair.
Loved this video. Your video essays are always so thought provoking. I'm just scared some big producer is going to hire you to tell them ARMY secrets they just don't want to accept
11:45 - 11:52 - Boracity is so on point here. Other groups had three years to climb to the top during BTS' absence. "Unfortunately for them, that time is basically over."
It is always fun to watch your videos! I think this advice just be yourself and do your own thing kind of unintentionally brought some shame to them and show them there is something to be ashamed about being in a group. Also leading them again unintentionally to strive to be solo artists and put oneself before the group even during group performances I think these words create some type of ego that isn't really needed there. But the artists were probably very restricted music-wise, including doing solo projects while in those groups, leading to them falling apart one day. Bts on the other hand are good at being team players, always having the group as a priority and having the freedom to experiment with music.
Thank you for all your work. Your research, your depth of understanding of process and how you weave it all together is admirable. Your content provides so much info as well as insight. For someone like me who became army after the members had gone into military, my search for their history, understanding of what's going on and other explanations led me to you, and I cannot thank you enough for introducing me to BTS in this manner.
Exactly, I can't wait to see how they are going to innovate again when they are back in 2025. Because, like j-hope said in the latest weverse interview "I think it's my job to keep being creative"
Bts, está muy por encima del resto de los grupos, son muy versátiles, profesionales, unos artistas completos, y no solo como artistas, como personas siguen siendo humildes y respetan y quieren a su fandom, eso se siente , por eso siempre los apoyo y sigo.
12:52 this! Yess!!! Ughh there are so many groups these days but none of them really feel that unique or relevant. They're all just similar versions of the same thing. It's boring. And the biggest thing is that they didn't learn anything from bts. No real lessons have been learned.
You are by far my favorite UA-cam channel!! Your videos are spot on and factual, and you show everyone what exactly happened along the way to bring BTS to the top - and I loved the part where you said that others had about 3 years to get to the top - but didn’t - and now their time is over. That’s right - our BTS is coming for everyone in just a few short months!!! Another great video!!! Borahae!! 💜💜
Wow, another awesome video. I love it. Thank you for making beautiful content. Every content or video you make, I watched it over and over again. I also watched those who reacted to your videos.
Boracity you did it again!!! This video's everything I've thought about throughout these past years being a person who always loved boy groups like I genuinly believe that "Be yourself" kinda mentality makes all the members of a group inevitably drift apart in the future. And a Boy group whose afraid to call themselves "A boyband" can never last long
great video ! i just wanted to add something as you’ve mentioned soloists like rain and psy. boa (female soloist under sm entertainment) released an english album in 2009 with promotions on her single and all… while the western world had a beyonce, lady gaga, avril lavigne and britney spears. it’s logical she didn’t break through this industry but she had already found success in the second biggest music industry (the first korean kpop act) the japanese one
she even went to cannes film festival with avril lavigne and bruce willis for the promotion of a movie she dubbed in korean and japanese… and he called her beautiful in the red carpet too 😓
Me waiting for you for another empecable honest reaction and summary of what is going on and what bts group is for kpop and music industry compare to other groups..❤
very well said and im also excited to see how they are going to make another history once they r out of thier service.they were drained of creative ideas before going in hiatus and during this hiatus so much had happen plus their experience in the military,im seeing how many albums are waiting to create.Ur video is as always very well research and organized.hope u get to 100k subs soon.
i love you boracity so much! i always look forward to the contents you make, they are very insightful and always make me love bts much much more than i already have. thank you for this
BTS also have the perfect formula for longevity, something other groups don’t always have.
GREAT point!!
Good point
exactly! they've had experiences before offically going solo. i see a lot of groups going solo, and they often dont know what they even like or want, they have to go through a full identity crisis/ discovery journey, before presenting their 'new' self. a journey like that, if youve never experienced before, can feel like such a rush, and end in an extreme. as in, groups disband completely, because the taste of a solo career was so overwhelming, or groups being completey disjointed, because members cant see themselves as non-soloist anymore, and want to remain the center of attention. bts is so cohesive and balanced, its genuineely amazing to see. and even when all members went solo, and talked about trying things out, in the end it always suited the member 100%, no one did an identity crisis 180 (if that makes sense lol). they already had their own sound, only developed and perfected it, where others completely lose or re-invent themselves, for better or worse, and changing their entire groups dynamic. sorry for the long comment lol
@ajlee2168 ouuu, I fear you ATE!!
You say this to solos, and they'll call you delusional and a bts hater
I totally agree. The more solo projects they have, the more they have to contribute to the group and the more interesting the group gets to us.
there's a saying ''IF YOU WANT TO GO QUICK, GO ALONE BUT IF YOU WANT TO GO FAR THEN GO TOGETHER'' I like BTS because of this
Well, if it applies to typical survival theory, then it applies to the music industry
Girly needs a Million Subscribers. You’re basically the best Army channel on UA-cam in terms of Bts’s music! The editing, the voice over, and the vibes, REALLY TOP-TIER!🫶🏻✨
A Million more like 90 Million every ARMY and BTS fan should be following Boracity!
@ for real!
AGREED!
100% agreed. Thank you again. ^^
💯💯💯💯💯💯agree
The fact that I started smiling only when BTS appeared on the screen tells me that I can never be happy without them
These words could easily be taken out of context to make you/us look bad but I think I get what you mean.
In photoshoots I look dramatic and otherworldly, but I’ll also show myself getting the makeup put on and talking about the concept of the styling, then you can flip to the other channel and see me going on a trip with my best friends, waking up with bedhead and no makeup."
Another thing I want to emphasise is that Western groups have the luxury of appearing ‘relatable’ and ‘simple’ but BTS did not.
As Namjoon rapped in Ddaeng “we celebrate rather than being celebrities.”
The truth is that Disney Channel ‘authenticity’ was never really authentic.
BTS are just true artists and we are so blessed to live in this time where they are actively carving their own path and building on their already huge legacy day by day.
This is so well put!
The videos are well edited the information is well presented and explained so everyone can understand the message, I want to say thank you for your work 💜
100% it is so well made and thought provoking
Same
seriously, the dichotomy between BTS's mind-blowingly intimidating artistry onstage vs. their puppylike regular everyday personas is super captivating. Nobody else does it like they do!
I wish more and more ARMYs watch Boracity video essays. She's very logical. She is doing an amazing job.
The way it ended-
"..... I'm honestly way more excited for the ways in which BTS is planning to change the industry again VERY SOON." 💅💅💥
💯
The way I ran here as soon as I saw the notification :)
So well put
People can say whatever they want, but BTS is different in many ways. What many in the K-Pop space don't have
totally agree!!!
@@lesliemcmc so true and well said
Couldn't agree more about the electricity over what Bangtan will bring next.
Thanks!!!! Your content is so BTS gold standard.
Bingo
BTS is authentic and genuine, thats what makes them different
@@NinaMarie7 yes yes yes exactly! I'm so excited!
Imagine the ticketing blood bath for a legacy tour, all the folks in their 50s-70s who've grown with BTS 😭
But I'm looking forward to it.
BTS took both kpop and western groups and combined elements to take them to Another Level!
Boracity is such an underrated channel, you deserve a million followers for spilling only facts!!! Keep going!!
another banger!!!
THIS!!!! American culture shaoes the industry
Gurl never leave this fandom.
No one does it like boracity magazine 💜
So excited to see them back in action.. 😂😂🥰🥰🥰💜💜💜💜
@@Whyyougottabethisway yes same here
Please never leave us boracity😭😭🙏you just nail it every fking time
EVERYONE WAKE UP THE BORA QUEEN POSTED 🗣️💨💥💥
Excellent analysis as always, queen Bora 💜. Much love and respect for your work.
Not "mi gente latino" 😂😂😂 but this was so interesting to read!
I checked your account 5min ago to see if we had a video or live and didn't get the notification, and ine minute later here you are 😭💜💜💜
BoraCity need to rewarded for her hard work & also need to get paid big for these videos. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
Very very interesting analysis bora. Really made me think abt the formats of these groups
Girl, you don't know how much I love your channel. Checking your channel is first thing I do when I open UA-cam. 💜💜love you BORACITY
I love this channle, unlike others she dont just give out her opinions, she state FACTS. I 100% agree with you~
It’s so interesting bc I think this is also inherent in cultural aspects, with the West leaning more towards individualism and the East towards collectivism.
Boracity I hope you make a video also about: (This is only a request)
People should acknowledge more how BTS played a huge role in making South Korean culture known globally.
I'm just scared some big producer is going to hire you to tell them ARMY secrets they just don't want to accept
omg the visuals are killing. you probably worked hard on this. Thank youuu
THE QUEEN HAS DROPPED 🔥🔥🔥💜💜
11:45 - 11:52 - Boracity is so on point here. Other groups had three years to climb to the top during BTS' absence. "Unfortunately for them, that time is basically over."
Damn, you are the best ARMY channel out there
Todo lo que quiero decir es gracias Bora por tus videos de BTS!!!!
💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
I also can't wait to see what BTS has got in their bags when they come home. Knowing them, we're about to be blown away 🤩💜
I also can’t wait to see what they do! Happy BTS Year!
Love to binge your videos
Exactly, I can't wait to see how they are going to innovate again when they are back in 2025. Because, like j-hope said in the latest weverse interview "I think it's my job to keep being creative"
Bts, está muy por encima del resto de los grupos, son muy versátiles, profesionales, unos artistas completos, y no solo como artistas, como personas siguen siendo humildes y respetan y quieren a su fandom, eso se siente , por eso siempre los apoyo y sigo.
I remember watching Camp Rock and liking the music the "villains" were doing xD
12:52 this! Yess!!! Ughh there are so many groups these days but none of them really feel that unique or relevant. They're all just similar versions of the same thing. It's boring. And the biggest thing is that they didn't learn anything from bts. No real lessons have been learned.
You are literally my favourite youtuber!!
Absolutely loved the video essay! Thank you for the detailed analysis
Nailed it, as always! Thank you for another amazing video!! 😊🫶🏻
Danke!
Love it 😍
Less than 6 months to wait! I'm very excited to see what BTS will musically and artistically do next cb but I know they will nail it ❤️🔥
You are by far my favorite UA-cam channel!!
Very insightful, very well said. I always enjoy your essays and I'm also looking forward to how BTS's new music is going to look and feel.
A part of me lights up when I see a new post
La vida junto a BTS es muy diferente 💜💜💜💜💜 que digan que camine con gigantes , que digan que vivi en los tiempos de BTS!!!!!!! I love bora❤❤❤
Bora posted! I had to click so fast! 😄😄
at 6:00, i felt literal chills when she mentioned BTS ❤❤
Boracity you did it again!!! This video's everything I've thought about throughout these past years being a person who always loved boy groups like I genuinly believe that "Be yourself" kinda mentality makes all the members of a group inevitably drift apart in the future. And a Boy group whose afraid to call themselves "A boyband" can never last long
great video ! i just wanted to add something as you’ve mentioned soloists like rain and psy. boa (female soloist under sm entertainment) released an english album in 2009 with promotions on her single and all… while the western world had a beyonce, lady gaga, avril lavigne and britney spears. it’s logical she didn’t break through this industry but she had already found success in the second biggest music industry (the first korean kpop act) the japanese one
she even went to cannes film festival with avril lavigne and bruce willis for the promotion of a movie she dubbed in korean and japanese… and he called her beautiful in the red carpet too 😓
9:38 that's true. Bcs the response from gp at that time was they're amazed by their performance/dancing which people haven't seen in years.
Me waiting for you for another empecable honest reaction and summary of what is going on and what bts group is for kpop and music industry compare to other groups..❤
Girl your videos are just so amazing!!
Wow the way you explain them so well
very well said and im also excited to see how they are going to make another history once they r out of thier service.they were drained of creative ideas before going in hiatus and during this hiatus so much had happen plus their experience in the military,im seeing how many albums are waiting to create.Ur video is as always very well research and organized.hope u get to 100k subs soon.
i love you boracity so much! i always look forward to the contents you make, they are very insightful and always make me love bts much much more than i already have. thank you for this
Bts was, is and will always be unique💜💜👑No one can copy their style👑👑...... Really love your videos though❤
I love how we're getting so much content from you nowadays! I don't know a lot about boy bands so most of this is going to be new for me
