And yes, Brian May is singing this song. He wrote it, and sang it. The ship left in the year 39 and returned the following century in the year 39. It had only been a year for the crew of the ship, but 100 years for everyone on Earth. And the ship he was referring to was indeed a spaceship
Brian wrote thi song. It is based on a theory by Einstein that if you travel forward at a certain speed, essentially time stands still. So the travelers took off for a year long mission to try to find other life in the universe. At some point they lost contact with earth but continued on their mission. After the year had passed they returned to earth only to find that they had only been going one year but that Earth had aged a hundred years and all of their family had passed on. The main character does find his grandchild and comments that he sees their mother's eyes in the child's eyes. Those on earth had thought the travelers were long dead since it had been so long with no contact. This is a great little folk song. Folk songs are generally written about things that happened in the past but Brian wanted to write one about the future and who better to write this one than Astrophysicist Sir Dr. Brian May?
Leave it to this Queen guitarist, future PhD in Astro physics, NASA consultant, member of the Star Fleet project, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame, & Songwriter Hall of Fame recipient to write this folksy composition!! ❤ Hey Brian, still waiting for that Time Machine! 💥🚀⏳😃
No One But You, (Only the Good Die Young), is a song the Three remaining members of Queen sang after Freddie died. It is the last time that John played with Queen. He left the group and never performed with them again. Most need a box of Kleenex handy for this.
You have developed a Queenie ear which shows you're a fan,it is Brian. Love watching this preform live ,where Freddie took lead vocals. All four were at the front of the stage very close together, Roger and Freddie hit some vert high notes live. They looked like they were having so much fun Next, Flick of the wrist live at the rainbow 1974,this was their warning song to their manger that they knew he was fiddling them out of money,he ignored them and that when Freddie wrote Death on two legs,a dis song and very harsh, there's no good live version so lyric version is best. x
Brian is a pure genius (astrophysicist with an IQ of 180 😮), his music is amazing, the lyrics are so clever but also one thing: Why the year of '39? Planet Mercury is 0,39 astronomical units away from the Sun... 😮
I saw Queen + Adam Lambert recently and Brian came out to the end of the catwalk and sat down on a chair with an acoustic guitar and played/sang '39. One of my favorite parts of the show! I also think I can hear Freddie in the background and DEFINITELY Roger!
Hey man, love your channel. I'm a huge Queen fan. Didn't know if you knew that this song was about time travel. Have a great day and keep up the good work!
I like to think that "The earth is old and gray" means all people were gone, not just his family. Also 39 doesn't say how many centuries passed. Maybe from 2039 to 4139. Just a thought.
Check out Roger Taylor singing "Tenement Funster" (or his "I'm in Love With My Car", I just personally like "Tenement Funster" better), Queen is talented in so many ways and blessed with not one but THREE capable lead singers.

Brian calls this type of music a "skiffle"... meaning folksy. You should catch this live, they have so much fun on stage with this song!
Brian also realized we had global warming. And this song serves as a warning. An absolute genius and brave song.
