Really good tutorial, thank you so much! This song connects so many and such deep emotions and memories for me it's unbelievable. Especially verse part 2 sounds even better than on the RHCP recording imo. I listened to this song and other RHCP songs and other bands during my high school time. I didn't have any friends but tried so hard to be part of their groups. I drank so much alcohol to feel good, to be courageous and to prove myself to the others. That I am such a tough person that I can handle even the greatest amounts of alcohol. I had so many dangerous blackouts. Like 6h blakouts, vomiting and nearly dying. I continued my downwards path using every drug known to man. From Cannabis, LSD, MDMA, Amphetamines, Methamphetamines, Heroin Benzos you name it. I ended up in a Methadone program. Then I quit. Everything but cannabis. But as time went I even had to quit that. Today I study medicine, and if everything goes well I will be a doctor in 2 years time. And I play the songs myself, the songs I used to liten to... And it feels almost as if i composed them myself, that's how connected I feel to them. All this to say, listen to your emotions. They don't lie. Thank you for your tutorial.
Amazing guitar lesson. Though many total beginners might not appreciate it, as there are no tabs etc (and I feel like that's what less experienced players are looking for the most), it's a truly wonderful lesson. I feel like you showed the correlation between chords and different parts of the song, which really makes it easy and fun to learn.
Thanks for not spoiling this tutorial with tabs. I know many players out there rely on them, but to me they're confusing rather than helpful. I've got ears to listen, so basically all I need is for someone to break it down for me because I don't feel too confident about my own ability to get it right just from listening to the original recording. Less than a minute in and you tought me how to finger pick and hold a pick...rip the first chord with your finger nails and if there is a pause grab the pick from your mouth. Wow, thank you.

just came across this. Superb tutorial, and great instruction about importance of the metronome. Whilst I understand why some people would want tabs, they are not necessary as there are only a few chord shapes and the principle with most finger picking is alternating the base notes with the melody notes. Beginners should learn the travis picking technique, and then learning songs such as this one comes much easier.
I should say a perfect way to teach anyone & anybody have to learn; Just watch this video.. I amazed bro, Cool& seriously I Can see the Dedication & Passion you have in... Appriviate it bro👍

It's very nice how you explain it in different phases but I didn't hear you mention what fret you put the capo on. I had to go back to see, especially with the markings that are different on your guitar. Just a tip for the next time...

Thank you and thank you for your feedback. I’ve tried different ways including putting notes in the screen. I can’t decide what’s best. Putting the notes on the screen gets across what to play but it can also make you overlook other aspects. Also it can look messy and it can take a lot longer time to edit. Here I teach it like you are in the room and that could have a certain charm as well. But yeah I’ll keep trying different approaches and see what gives the best results. 🤷♂️☺️
@@Vigi I think the notes should be included man.. Most of us aren't trying to jam and show off with a handful of songs (I hope), we're trying to improve on the guitar..

I also think that while learning, guitar tabs can be more destructive than beneficial to your learning as a beginner or even intermediate player. Maybe you could have a separate link with the tabs?

@@Vigi Hahaha :D . I played it exactly the same way but I didn't play two strings at the same time on the descending melody. For instance in the 10th second of your video I'd only pick the e string. After listening to the original again I realised that John actually picked both high strings. Good job, Vigi!
This is the first song I am learning that has finger picking in it and at first it feels a bit alien. It's like my brain knows what to do but my right hand fingers are clumsy and to thic. It feels like Iam not progressing, but the weird thing is afther I lay down the gituar and come back the next day I notice the improvement. So bottem line just stick with it and it will come.
Yes! I always have the same experience. Just play it through slowly and accurately the first day. Then during the night, I feel like it gets programmed into my muscle memory. The next day, I can play it better. And then continue like that until you got it like you want it. :)

Hmm, I remember researching what strings I should use on my acoustic years ago. I figured I check what John used, and from my research I concluded it seem like he just used the same as for the electric and it seemed like something that’s common to do in general. So I’ve just stuck with that since, keeping it simple. But it’s interesting you say you’ve found other strings on his acoustic. I’ll have to look that up myself sometime. ☺️
Have you played along to the original and does it sound good then? I think it’s clear it’s a high e note, relative to capo on the sixth fret, if I understand you correctly. Thank you! ☺️
Hello! Good question! The metronome is very helpful to learn keeping a steady rhythm. It’s easy to end up in a situation where you can play all the notes, without it sounding good. The metronome helps you avoid that. 👍☺️ Please let me know if it doesn’t make sense. 😃

Those guitar posers who want to play 100 notes a second all the time need to calm down for a moment and enjoy simple melodies ;) . I play the guitar for a long time but it wasn't very easy for me to perfectly reproduce this picking pattern. It's about finger coordination because on certain beats you have to use two fingers simultaneously. Once you figure it out it's really fun to play and you can be proud of yourself! Good luck with learning this beautiful piece of music :) The next challenge is to sing this while playing the guitar. I always lose the picking pattern when I start singing :D
@@timons7446 Yeah that's the magic trick really. Sometimes I can't play something and I think it's because it's too fast, but then I usually realise I haven't figure out how to play it properly slowly either. :D As soon as I can play it comfortably slowly, speed is usually not an issue. :)
@@Vigi sorry if this is a dumb question, but do you mean the same gauge strings (10-46), or literally the same electric guitar strings? They definitely don't look like the phosphor bronze ones...

D’Addario 10’s. I believe so. :)
@@Vigi I checked pics of his Martin and it seems he use wounded 4-th string so he probably uses some typical acoustic gauge sets, not 10s.

It's about finger coordination because on certain beats you have to use two fingers simultaneously. Once you figure it out it's really fun to play and you can be proud of yourself! The next challenge is to sing this while playing the guitar. I always lose the picking pattern when I start singing :D
@@timons7446 Yeah it wasn't super easy for me as well. I really had to practice to get things somewhat right. :)
@@Vigi Yeah I always slow down things and get it perfect on a comfortable speed and then you can always play it faster afterwards.
@@timons7446 Yeah that's the magic trick really. Sometimes I can't play something and I think it's because it's too fast, but then I usually realise I haven't figure out how to play it properly slowly either. :D As soon as I can play it comfortably slowly, speed is usually not an issue. :)

The thing is , ir doesn't sound so good... Sounds hard, and I tought I'd change the thickness of the strings as well as the everybrows that are plastic by others of tusq
Try changing the nut and bridge to better material. Also strings like you said too. ☺️
