  • Aloha,
    This compilation is bits & pieces of my last 6 months of whipping off the island of Oahu. All Trevally Jacks under 10lbs are referred as Papio or Omilu if its a Bluefin Trevally. I enjoy the action of whipping from shore. I do have a 20ft boat but still prefer whipping from shore. All catches were made using CHL (Completely Hooked Lures) soft grubs. Rods were either Fenwicks or Okuma Steelheads. Reels are Shimano Stradic CI4's or Sustains. Video was done by Contour Roam#2 & 1080P.

    Nice one!! You can tell it's a papio when you can feel their head shaking but there not pulling line. That's how I can tell without even seeing them.

      jledesmaf1 Fishing is a learning experience that you will enjoy. You don't need the best to enjoy yourself. I try to make my vids a teaching tool for anglers to learn by. I may not get it right all the time, i'm just trying to share my experiences & knowledge. If something i do can help you, i did my job. Good luck John:)

    what pound test do u usually use when whipping by the reef or beach (Like this vid)
    and do u use the same line pound test for leader line and reel line?

      Maalaea Life I'm using Seaguar 4lbs on my CI4 1000, Seaguar 6lbs on my CI4 2500 & Seaguar 8lbs on my CI4 3000. I'm sold on the thinner diameter monofilament lines. Less inner guide ring friction means greater whipping distance. Also more line on my spool. But i can't take credit for this realization as Brian over at Brian's Fishing Supply highly recommended this. That man is a fountain of information & every recommendation from him has worked.

    are weights better than floaters?

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  8 років тому

      +Glenn Gapor
      Good question. There are areas that floats are preferred. For me a lot has to do with the wind direction and strength. Times of strong Northerly winds i frequent spots that i'll have the wind at my back. I simply "spoon" the line out with my baits so i can reach areas that i can't cast to. Got to be aware of local boating traffic and surfers.

    Hey Chris, I enjoy your videos alot man! I've recently been trying to use lures more on my outings, mostly metal lures. I have a small selection of crank baits and a fee grubs. Caught my first papio on a small slab spoon, although it was just a juvenile. I will definitely play with the lures more! Keep sharing bro! You're a great teacher.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  9 років тому

      Maalaea Life When i plug yes. 30lb braid. i use the thinner type that's coated. Less inner ring guide friction means greater whipping distance as compared to the regular braid.

    Hello could you please tell me the weights that you oftenly throw with your rods??? Thank you

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  6 років тому +1

      Wow, that's hard to answer. Every rod has a "sweet spot". I roughly know what & how to put together a rig that compliments itself. The rod's rating vs the reel size & line used vs the casting weight needed. I do this for 2 reasons.
      !) To target a certain species.
      2) To use in a certain type of area (ie reef, sand, boulders).
      If your unsure of what to get i'd suggest a medium to med/hvy graphite rod 10-12ft that's rated at "Fast" . You can get cheap reels but i prefer Shimano. Most 6K-8K sizes for 10/11ft & 10K for 12ft. If you want to save money in the long run buy good equipment, not the "cheapo" stuff. In the long run you'll save money doing this. Also you'll need to know if you're going to use spinners, conventionals or both. This'll determine the type of rod you'll be ourchasing.
      Chunking, plugging, sliding. What type is your style? Need to be specific. Write me back with more info Evelyn:)

      Scuba Chris. Here in taiwan, I fish from shore...but because of the wind I need to throw heavy weight + 2'' grub ( like carolina rig, wipping rig) but there are a lot of rock and reef...so is not a good idea with slow retreive..i must retreive very fast and it's too fast for the fish. Hammer bomb is a good idea but I never see something like this here in taiwan. Only in france call bullrag( full plastic) or bulldo ( must put watet inside)...
      Note...wipping technique I want to use also in filippines.

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  6 років тому

      In those type of conditions yes, the Hammer Bombs will work. But also consider using Tough Bubbles. I fill mine with BB's & seal it to make "Rattling Bubbles", those work!

    Aye Scuba Chris! I noticed younjoplnupbyour grub different ways. Is there a specific reason why you sometimes put the grub all the way up the hook rather than just put the grub at the end where the shank is? Please let me know thanks!

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  8 років тому

      I'm always changing my game. When i thread the grub on the hook it runs straighter, when i attached the upper 1/8 of the grub to the hook it rotates more when retrieved.

    I watch your videos a lot and I love it! but I don't think I retrieve correctly, could you possibly make a video on that? Thanks (:

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  8 років тому

      +Randomchild
      There's no right or wrong way to retrieve. 2 main factors to keep in mind.
      1- Retrieve ratio. Lower retrieve ratio's require a faster pump action because on every turn of the reel less line is recovered. Lower ratios are better for plugging for my style of popping.
      2- Type of bait/lure used. Using fresh baits you need to reduce the retrieval speed so the bait doesn't rip off. Grubs you need to pick-up the retrieval rate. Also in shallower water a faster retrieval rate is needed so you don't snag the bottom (keep the rod tip high).
      Also the type of fish you're targeting may be picky on how the bait/lure is presented. You need to play around and try different styles and retrieval technics with different gear until you can figure out what technique is best for you.

      my gear ratio is 5.2:1 , is that considered to be on the faster of slower side? I also try to target papio, should I go faster or slower

    • @ScubaChris
      @ScubaChris  8 років тому

      +Randomchild
      My Spheros 6K is 4.7:1 & my Stradic 5K is 6.2:1. So i'd say it's more on the lower end so good for almost anything. You can vary your speed to whip by increasing speed to plugging at normal speed.

      For my grubs i prefer Completely Hooked Lures. First in Hawaii to use extended glow. What i like about these grubs besides the fact they work is the grub itself is resilient, doesn't rip off the hook when casted. This is the link at www.chlures.com/
