Thank you for another great video! Please post more beginner angler videos. I didn't know what the numbers for the reel meant, but I will look those up and am happy to learn. Casting and reeling techniques would be appreciated too! And also when to know when to let the fish take the line, how light to set the drag, what to look for in a good papio fishing spot, and what time of day to go fishing. :) Mahalo!
I was browsing youtube for popper techniques ect & came across this video. I realized I new exactly where this video was recorded. I ordered some Oh Baby CHL Bugz to try out myself. I ended up getting a 20 lbs Omilu, stoked!
Love your videos. Just got back into fishing and need a refresher. I spent 20+ years coaching and recently retired from coaching. Now I can go fishing!
Aloha Scuba Chris, I noticed in your leader vid and this one that you use beads. I'm curious as to what they are for. I'm still practicing with grubs and soft baits, and want to learn what would increase my strike chances. Thanks for the great vids.
It's purely a non-proven enhancement. For me i feel if i enhance the way the lure looks and is presented that my chances of strikes increases. In other words i feel more confident in my lure's ability to catch fish.
+byron lee I just use the smallest black ball bearing swivels i can find, never had a break at the swivel before so for now it isn't a concern. The stretchability of the mono, the bend of the rod & the drag combines in slowing the fish down & taking tension of the knots/swivels/line etc.
I agree with you on using black swivels instead of silvery ones. We want the fish to focus on the lures and not the swivels or any other shiny/attractive stuff besides the lure.
+byron lee This was a whipping rig. I used a 3/8oz lead egg which is enough to whip +100ft in cross-winds over 2-3ft of water. Any heavier would result in hang-ups unless you increase retrieval speed.
I've been out of it as an sportsman angler for over 20yrs. But i've been a commercial diver/fisherman most of my life & found the "old ways" has worked throughout the years. Only the equipment & technologies have changed. Thanks for watching my UA-cam channel.
Nice Catch!!! I am also planning to order J braid 6lb dark green color but they only have chartreuse color. Would the chartreuse braid line affect my catch? Also, wouldnt it be better to use 8 lb braid instead of 6lb braid if you are using 6lb leader? Chances are the braid will snap first because its less abrasive and weaker than flourocarbon? Thank you. Would really like to know your thought because you are the fishing master! :)
Impressive!!! Thank you so much for sharing this video and your knowledge with us! Grubs huh I wonder if they will work here in the south east US. Do you know what species it may attract? Never seen that papio here. Nice catch too!! I loooove fishing! Did you do anything to secure those beads close to the hook? Is the leader always about a foot shorter than the rod at use?
Never tried grubs in your neck of the woods. I've always felt if a fish is hungry, it's hungry. Lol. If you have Pompano then yes, it should work as it's closely related to papi'o (young Trevally Jacks under 10lbs). I don't secure the beads, water movement keeps it flushed against the grub. For standard leaders i usually go 1 full arm length plus a bit more. I'm happy going 7-8ft. This way if i need to cut the line to redo the line being chaffed by a fish at the lure, i'll have plenty of extra line to last awhile. By the way thanks for watching my vids:)
I'm averaging 100ft using a 3/8oz lead egg. Normally i use 1/2oz that can whip further out but this is shallow water. If i used the 1/2oz i'd have to increase my retrieval rate to keep it off the reef, most fish wouldn't be able to chase it down. So i use a lighter weight to maintain my retrieval speed. Drawback is i can no longer get the distance as before. So i hit it early in the morning before the wind picks up. Days like this the trades are blowing from left to right, South winds are onshore so i don't fish here on those days. The cooler Northerly winds are primo here, winds at your back so you can whip further out past the breakers. You can use braid to whip farther out as the thinner diameter line has less wind resistance.
I will be visiting family in Oahu this week and was wanting to get some general information for this time of year of fishing from the shore. What areas would you recommend? Thanks For all your informative videos and truly enjoy watching 😁
Almost anywhere is good now. Papios are all over whipping & dunking, dunking it's o'io. Are you bringing your own gear or you have access to gear here? Use grubs in clearer water, noisy plugs or metal plugs for dirtier areas.
Yes I'm bringing my own gear and I have a pole with my family there. I wanted to fish an area for easy access since my old lady is not too fond of long walks lol.
Hi Carlos, The brands of the best ones are always Japanese. I only use the larger US brands (ie 4.5mm) for metal spoons like Kastmaster or Krocodile. But for most grubs i use size#4 beads from 1-1/4in to 1-3/4in grubs. My preferred brand is Izuo Brothers for green & red (also glow beads). Recently i've tried Toho brand which is harder and more translucent which works better in daylight i feel. Thanks for watching my vids Carlos. Good luck:)
You talk about your hook/leader setup, but you don’t talk about what kind of weight/bubble you use. Can you explain? You put the two rod pieces together and it looks like the mono is already strung through the guides and there is some sort of weight on the end?
You're referring to a "whipping set-up". More or less a "Carolina-Style" leadering system. From your questions you sound like a first timer? Best to look around, pick & choose the styles you feel are best suited to the way you want to fish. That corresponds to your targeted species. I still prefer going for small game for the almost guaranteed action. Larger game requires more patience & a much larger pocket book. And i do explain everything you're asking. Can't do that in 1 massive 6hr video. That's why you create folders like LEADERING SYSTEM to BRAID VS MONO for example. The reason why the rod was like that was because it was pre-equipped for that day. The recommended products i use reflect why i do what i do. If you watched the video used you'd understand a lot of what you're already asking me. Nobody has the patience to watch a long "how to" vid. That's why everything is specifically segmented.
I'm definitely no expert. Different areas at different times of day to different species & lighting conditions is a science i could never crack. I just use the brands & colors that has produced day & night. Mostly i use CHL "Completely Hooked Lures". I do know when i use the orange "Oh Baby" that the Omilu love it. Papio & Moi like the green "Suki" during the day and at night i use the blue UV glow "Scuba Blues" for Akule. So i stick with CHL & certain colors & doing that correctly will most likely perform in the way i desire.
Scott, 100% of all your questions are all covered on my channel under different vids. Offset hooks offers the angler a quicker hook-up. Offers a faster hook-up & that "twisting" action that the corkscrew offset shape creates "locks" it in.
A 3/8oz lead egg on the main line that is stopped by a #3 ball bearing coastlock snap swivel. I then put the pre-made leader with the crane swivel end connecting to the coast lock snap.
For basic whipping i use Stradic. I'm sure the Stella is the best of Shimano but i don't have one. I do use a Twin Power which is basically a beefed-up Stradic.
I assume so. I had my drag set for lighter hits, wasn't expecting a big hit. I always try to set my drag lighter. I found if i set it to strong it rips the lips of smaller fish with thin lips. Noticed that on small Trevally hits here & Salmon when i hit the Columbia River. When i release small Trevally & Salmon from using a lighter drag there isn't extreme lip damage. Of course this is my observation & i'm not sure if this is a fact. It's my personal observation of years of fishing locally & abroad. Thanks for watching my vids:)
Sorry, i don't use a gauge to pre-set my strike. I go by feel depending on what i'm fishing for, strength of gear i'm using & area i'm in. I always try to go lighter because that's how i was taught so i won't lose strikes as compared to a heavier set that could result in the line breaking to damaging the fish if it's an undesireable species. For this to work i always make sure my hooks are sharp.

Getting back into fishing means a new avenue to enjoy! I hope my vids can help make that more enjoyable for you:)
Another useful video! Thank you Chris!
Great informative video Chris!

Thanks!
Great video and mean hook up on the first catch.
Thanks, it was! Rarely do i get a hook-up on the first cast And trying out new gear as well!
I believe the Tica Galant X 9'6 medium light rod 1/4 to 3/4 oz will be perfect for 6 pound test line. Great for casting 1/2 to 5/8 oz egg lead.
Yes it will be! The only place on island for me to get 5/8oz eggs are at POP Fishing, almost always sold out though.
Very Nice Chris
I catch plenty veke on that spot really good size, 12in and bigger. thxs for the video. I'll try go in the morning when can
I haven't caught weke there yet, mostly omilu.

Nice setup & Nice catch! How much did you'd spend on your setup, if you don't mind me asking?
+katty watty
$99.95 for the Galant, $159.95 for the Stradic from Charley's Fishing Supply-Cash Price.,
Scuba Chris nice thx for the info gonna go checkout Charley's
awesome fight Chris!
+Mark Smith
Thanks, was fun on 6lb monofilament!
Hi Chris, do you use a sliding sinker on this setup or a water filled bobber for weight to cast out the offering?
+byron lee
This was a whipping rig. I used a 3/8oz lead egg which is enough to whip +100ft in cross-winds over 2-3ft of water. Any heavier would result in hang-ups unless you increase retrieval speed.

Would love to have some hands on with you just got my 10 year old some gear for Xmas and we are both new to this

in this video, are you using a 6lb test monofilament yellow line with your 3/8oz egg lead with the leader line being 10lb? mahalo
Correct.

Yes it would be. Sometimes you need to use what's on hand. Thanks, you're very observant!
Man that off set hook really does work 🤙🏽 mahalos for sharing the knowledge Chris 🙏 hope one day can run into you whippin 🎣
Small island Royce:)
Nice

how far do you get with that set up during cast how heavy lead do you use

Try Haubush, Chocolate Beach, Nimitz Beach, Electric Beach, Kaiaka Bay, White Plains, Police Beach, Pounders, Makua Finger to name a few. Good luck.
Hi, just beginning to watch ur videos, can you please tell me brand, size, and technical color names for green and red beads?thank you.

wow i want set new one for me... nice share mr...
This is a nice light but strong fun casting set-up:)
Nice one 👍
Thank you! Cheers!

i use a lighter shade of blue almost like royal blue braid for whipping. would you say that's the wrong color?
I'm definitely no expert. Different areas at different times of day to different species & lighting conditions is a science i could never crack. I just use the brands & colors that has produced day & night. Mostly i use CHL "Completely Hooked Lures". I do know when i use the orange "Oh Baby" that the Omilu love it. Blue is a good day color by the way. Try the CHL "Scuba Blues". No wrong answer here.
Maybe some stronger line and some more drag will have the fish giving you less of a headache?
I was there for the fun of using lighter tackle. It was a fun battle!
where were u fishing at?
looks like a good spot
thanks for the tips
Sorry but i don't give out locations.
Why do you “offset” the hook tip? What is the advantage?
Scott,
100% of all your questions are all covered on my channel under different vids. Offset hooks offers the angler a quicker hook-up. Offers a faster hook-up & that "twisting" action that the corkscrew offset shape creates "locks" it in.
great video
Mahalo! Thanks for watching my videos:)
Hi .what do you have before the leader line, a float or a weiht?
A 3/8oz lead egg on the main line that is stopped by a #3 ball bearing coastlock snap swivel. I then put the pre-made leader with the crane swivel end connecting to the coast lock snap.
Scuba Chris thanks
What is the fastest model in Shimano Stradic family? By the way I am Crazy about GT fishing from the beach :)
For basic whipping i use Stradic. I'm sure the Stella is the best of Shimano but i don't have one. I do use a Twin Power which is basically a beefed-up Stradic.
Scuba Chris thanx👍
What is the weight of your egg sinker? Im guessing its 3/4 oz?
For the area i was fishing that day i used 1/2oz lead egg. Water is 4ft there & didn't want to snag the bottom, gets expensive loosing my rigs. Lol!
Where did you buy the rod?
Charley's Fishing Supply on Oahu.
Thanks. Now I gotta figure out where to go fishing.
Is it bad to reel in while your drag is giving out line?
I assume so. I had my drag set for lighter hits, wasn't expecting a big hit. I always try to set my drag lighter. I found if i set it to strong it rips the lips of smaller fish with thin lips. Reeling while the drag is giving causes the line to twist on the spool.
What kind of line are you using
270yrds 6# UFO mono from Japan. It's in the video.
how price this rod mr.??
what line is that called
Leader line is Sakura Fluorocarbon. I use 10lb & 12lb for light whipping. Also Seaguar fluoro is good to.
Mainline is 6lb UFO monofilament from Japan. Turns near invisible when it hits the water.
I'll say around noon time to evening time
Makes sense, i only go there in the morning.
scuba Cris, do you dive?
Used to be a commercial diver, retired from that now.
Scuba Chris where are you from
Will Mark Hawaii. Used to be a commercial diver & fisherman.
Scuba Chris cool
Scuba Chris first time a UA-camr replyed to me
Do you mind telling us the spot you whip at? But if u dont, i understand why. Mahalo!
Sorry, i show what i do but locations are the results from the angler's hard spent time trying out different locations.
How many pounds of drag were you set to?
Sorry, i don't use a gauge to pre-set my strike. I go by feel depending on what i'm fishing for, strength of gear i'm using & area i'm in. I always try to go lighter because that's how i was taught so i won't lose strikes as compared to a heavier set that could result in the line breaking to damaging the fish if it's an undesireable species. Thanks for all your videos Chris!

I think it was around a hundred but not sure, lost the original receipt.
