- Neville Southall has been described as one of the best goalkeepers of his generation.
He moved on to Everton for £150,000 in 1981 and established himself as the club's first-choice goalkeeper by the 1983-84 season.
He went on to make a club record 578 appearances in the Football League and Premier League (750 in all competitions);
In December 2004 he was voted as Everton's all-time cult hero and is named on the Gwladys Street's Hall of Fame.

The Greatest Goalkeeper of all time in my opinion. Doesn't get the recognition he deserves he won us games week in week out. Kevin Ratcliffe and Derek Mountfield both said if a striker got past us we didn't have to worry as big Nev was there. And to play at top level for over 17yrs is Astounding. GOAT

The greatest Goalkeeper I've seen. It was a privilege to watch him in the 80's . So many great saves, never forget that save at Tottenham in 84\85.
I was at that game as I lived locally.Long time EFC supporter, took myself off to the match. Maybe the best game i've seen. Fantastic night. The atmosphere was incredible and I didn't get the shi/t kicked out of me on the way home..marvellous. : )
His reflexes and reaction time were absolutely top class. Never mind his agility.

The term legend is used now to describe journeyman footballers, Neville Southall was an absolute legend he was without a doubt the best Goalkeeper in the world during his time at Everton.

Southall is my hero. It's no doubt that he is my all time favourite amidst the great players in Everton's history. I used to play goalkeeper in my school time. So I know deeply how well big Nev played in the 80s.

Me fucking hero, I played in goal all me life because of this man. My MA worked in Dublin city center in the eighties as a cleaner and I made her bring all the waste envelopes home so I could peel the 1punt stamps off them and use them to send letters to everton for pictures and autographs of Neville, they wrote back every time.
Not the most aerobatic keeper but Big Nev has an exceptional situation awareness and reads the game extremely well. Certainly the best keeper of his generation!

A pure genius Everton were a team great at the time but Neville Southall was some goalkeeper a joy to watch all those saves we were unindebted for those performances nil satis nisi optimum 1878💙💙💙💙💙
The header!! Such a brave keeper in the ruck as well as being so agile for a big man. Proper goalkeeper. In the days when they had little, if any, ref protection. Either you head it first or Nev smashes you. You choose.

Great keeper, remember back in the 80's whenever they reached a final at Wembley they always travelled down and stayed at The Bell House in Gerrards Cross Buckinghamshire. Us kids always got together off the local council estate and head a couple of miles through farmers fields and thick woodlands to go see the team board their bus on that Saturday morning. Great memories and what a great team Everton back then and doing well now.

Im a Wednesday fan and was at that first game, I've always been a goalie too, Nev was my hero but being on the kop end we all thought Imre Varadis header was in as he wheeled away in celebration. Absolute lej.

same for me i took being a gk late i was 19 now 45 still reckon i could be as good slower and older but still have not blow smoke up my own arse i was very good in goal hand like shovels and brave as a ox was not scared of making a dive 1 on 1 getting a kick to face body i would get up brush my self off and get on not like these gk now a days they say you have to be mad to be a gk its true i can vouch for that

The second clip was in the FA Cup, it ended 4-4 and my parents said I could watch the highlights (I was young and it was a school night), the clip with John Barnes it was actually offside however Big Nev didn't know it... he was my hero when I was a kid... reason I played in goal..

As a Liverpool fan, I always thought he was superb and definitely the best keeper I was aware of. We had Bruce G, also gifted but NS was more reliable overall. I always found it funny that him and Russie were fellow Wales players.

Fantastic goalkeeper: one of the very best. As as Evertonian, it's not nice to say this, but he should have left Everton in 88 because he was left to play with a load of shite brought in by Harvey. Harvey, was a good coach, but not a good manager; his transfer dealings speak for themselves.

People also forget that during much of the 90s, Everton had a very poor team. And, one of the main reasons, arguably the main reason, they stayed in the Premier League was Southall. A lot of people talk about Big Nev in the 80s yet forget the 90s.
