You bet! You and your team took excellent care of our buddy and improved her field performance exponentially. Can't wait for Sept bird seasons to begin. Covey will be finding the coveys! Thanks for all the great work!
So glad to see cubby is coming along very nicely Ron . Think you've got a lifelong hunting companion there. Looking forward to seeing your next installment. Stay safe and God bless 🇺🇸☠️🇺🇸!!!
Great video Ron! Really enjoy and look forward to your videos. Also look forward to possibly seeing you and Covey enjoying a successful hunt in the future. Long ride to pick her up but at least you had company on the way home. She really missed you! Thanks Ron and enjoy your loyal hunting companion.
That is one well trained hunting dog, she'll be a great hunting companion. Here in germany, dogs are deeply engrained in hunting. Even getting your license you get tested on what breeds are good for which type of hunting. When i get out of university i want to get a Large Münsterländer.
They're a beautiful breed! Kinda reminds me of a long haired German shorthaired pointer. I had an Irish Setter when I was a child. She was a great dog :) Now... I have a German Shepherd and a Yorkshire Terrier... definitely a fun couple 🙂
We had a female English Setter when I was a child, she had a very strong hunting drive. That dog was so nimble she could jump on to the lateral limbs from a peach tree inside her pen to get out. Was beautiful to see her lock on to a bird and go into a point. I'd throw bread out in the yard for the black birds and starlings, she'd stay hidden behind the shrubs surrounding out TV antenna tower. As soon as she heard the pellet gun discharge, she would run out from hiding and bring the dead bird back! Most fun I ever had with a dog when I was 9-12 years old! If I had a dog like her now I'd feel like a kid again at 60!
Very nice Ron enjoy. Love seeing great dog work. Now Ron I hope you don’t let her down as I hope you are on a Trap league. I always felt shooting Trap & pheasants were very similar as they get up in front of me and go away from me. Enjoy your Days Together as they are special. TC
Speaking of a tough dog training program ... a common site at my local mall are trainers and dogs from the nearby Guide Dog Foundation for the Blind. At least half of their "students" flunk out :)
Very cool Ron, just found this video of yours relating to Covey. I hope you guys have many years of enjoyable companionship. I truly believe a dog can be mans best friend. I know my Golden Lab Toby is mine. 😎👍
It’s hard not to take some of the dogs style and intensity when training. It comes back with confidence that you give her. I’m betting that she will look like a million dollars this upcoming bird season!
I'm sure you've heard this before, but in my limited hearing capacity, I thought her name was "cubby" Thanks for all you do, Ron, you are The Man! (And Covey is The Girl!)
Great video ! Got your pointer a head of the game their Ron !! On wild bird, we at the club (www.ccal.biz) have 3 rules : # 1) If the dogs does not make a distinct point and flushes the bird, even if the bird is branched, you take your dog away and do not shoot the bird ( no bird girl...) # 2) No point, no bird... and rule # 3) the most important of all !!! NO POINT, NO BIRD ! God Bless !
Covey is an English setter from Beirl Setters in Wisconsin. She's a bit larger than the little (30-35-pound) field setters I've had in the past, but not as large as some of the big Ryman-style setters bred after the mid-1960s. I'd define Covey as a classic, original Ryman-style setter: well proportioned, graceful, flowing gait, excellent endurance, and too smart for her own good, not to mention mine! She's a foot hunter's dog, working fairly close, often checking in, rarely disappearing. She and I have taken many pheasants and sharptailed grouse, a few ruffed and sage, a few bobwhites and scaled quail. Hope to collect all of Idaho's upland birds over her points this year! And if we fail, I'll have had the pleasure of watching her try!
I have hunted over gordon setters my entire life. None of them have had any desire to find and/or retrieve downed pheasants. WHY? Sometimes they run right past dead ones.
Danny, hunting ability was bred out of Irish setters a hundred hears ago. Some breeders have bred it back in. You probably just need to get the right bloodline. Most of my E. setters over the years were poor retrievers, too. Covey will fetch, but I wouldn't call her overly enthusiastic. You can train a dog to fetch on command, as Standing Stone Kennels did Covey, but it takes lots of time and patience.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors Thanks for the reply! But this leads to my next questions; why will these gordon setters point a live bird, but once a bird is down, they just runs off and won't even at least point a dead bird???? They are entirely useless in locations downed birds. I don't even care if they don't retrieve to hand, but at least help me find the bird!
Perhaps Ethan at Standing Stone Kennels can weigh in on this, but for me gunshot tolerance begins when they're puppies. In fact, raising pups in a noisy environment from day one can really help. A household of noisy kids, banging and clanging pots and pans, alarms, TV, etc. exposes them while they're safe in the den with the dam. Sudden, loud noises are as natural as air. Barring that, I break them to it by firing a 22 rimfire on the backside of the house (live on a rural property,) then calling the pup around, then putting down her food. With Covey three days of this brought her running to the sound of the shot. I then gradually moved closer, stepped up to 28 ga., etc.

Who the F would dislike this? You can easily transfer to et, et by using it before woah. She'll quickly recognize it as stop after only a few repetitions and woah won't be necessary.
grndzro, I've sued the et et for years, but Ethan has some fine tuning ideas regarding it. He's worked with about a thousand more dogs than I, so I'm listening to his advice on this one.
@@RonSpomerOutdoors I don't know what john's problem is, but Covey performed beautifully! There's always gotta be some detractor that wants to spoil everyone else's fun.
man this is sad to see. people need far more training than dogs do. you are not the dogs boss. these people scammed you and it is clear from just this video that that guy doesnt know much about working with dogs. seems like they just scam people that know even less than them
May God Bless you Ron Spomer, for showing others the "way", by example! Another fantastic video!!!
Thank you Phillip.

Thanks for trusting us with her Ron!

Outstanding! Pretty girl. I've always wanted an English Setter.
Cubby is one BEAUTIFUL hunting buddy ❤️
Congratulations to you both... I'm sure she'll be on point!
Thanks Mark. Covey came home and pointed some grouse within the hour!

Good luck with that Munsterlander, Florian. I've hunted over one or two that were pretty impressive. Not as pretty as Covey, but then few are.
What a wonderful dog you have...
Looks like fun

You've got that right, Ron. When she gets onto wild birds the intensity ramps up.

That was pretty neat .

Yes, lots of folks hear it as Cubby. I'm sure she'd respond to that, but Covey is the much more appropriate name!
Nice dog
Nothing like hunting with dogs no matter the game
Anything you can do with a dog is better.
Hunting dogs make a fun activity, amazing.
Points like a large munsterlander.....is she still retrieving?
I'm getting old, you got one that can fetch deer?
I've never seen a dog like Covey before. She looks like she's got a cattle dog merle to her but the ears of a spaniel? What exactly is she?

Wow, I never knew Ron was bald. The guy is always wearing a hat.
Bingo! Actually, the bald part is just on top middle. Classic. The rest is shaved. I call it my Covid haircut and... it is liberating.
Someone call the police because Cubby has stolen my heart
Oof
Covey has quite a collection of hearts!
how much was it , can a broke person like me offered it?
Bobwhites calling every where
Do you think you could train a two or three year old dog to gun fire? Or is it best to introduce firearms at a pup?
