Personally every loco I have with plastic cogs on ringfield motors I've taken off and binned the lot and fitted brass ones from the older motors and never had a problem since.
With further testing today, I found the solution wasn’t perfect,. There is still a slight noise and a little hesitancy. I checked the wheel gauges, liked all the parts and put a small amount of white grease on the cog. As an excersize I might open it up and clean the commutator which would cover all the maintenance. In the meantime I will order the brass cogs. Thanks all for looking and commenting
Hi, Same question for me I am having difficulty fitting the brass cog. Andy Russel spoke about using a small vice and C clamp. I have not tried it yet but have it set up. I even tried to heat the cog without success. So I would be interested in seeing your procedure
What I have been told is he took ill and closed the channel down. Mist likely he upset someone and was forced to shut it down. He has done this before. That is a great pity as he was so knowledgeable regarding the hobby and always willing to share. Check out Johns Amazing Trains if you need help with something
@@charlie1872 I just enjoyed his videos,. If it's not due to health reasons it's a pity he had to close his channel down. I had noticed it disappearing on another occasion, but for less time. I'll definitely look up that other channel. I guess your channel's name has something to do with Partick in Glasgow, I spent my early childhood in Hillhead just up Byres Road.
I was born in Vine Street and lived there until I was eleven when they tore down the tenements and we were moved to Knightswood. I scratch built a model of the tenement we lived in and it too is on my channel. Of course I know Partick very well.I now live in Toronto.
@@charlie1872 I saw you live in Toronto. I live in Padua, Italy. My dad's Italian and my mum's Scottish.... and part Irish... I'm a fine mix, but I've got a proper Glasgow accent.
I am generalizing here, if the cog is bad you would get a whining noise and the loco might not move. When was the last time you lubricated it with oil and grease and when was the last time you checked the armature ? It is entirely possible that the motor picked up something from the track. I could always do a zoom call with you.

How did you replace the brass cogs?
Brian, how did you get the brass one on?

Ayeee good to see it going again!
I've been looking for Barrie Davis's channel, but it's been taken down. Have you got any news? I know Barrie had some health issues.

If a cog has a split then it might jump and make that noise.
Update for @barrydavies I used a C Clamp to PUSH the Brass cog onto the axle. ua-cam.com/video/ND846DQs7Lw/v-deo.htmlsi=HD9QFRW7Pf0aqDtE
You ought to knock-up a track cleaning van or buy one.
I have one. Thanks for the suggestion 👍
Hand held cams sucks
It is challenging to find the best filming position. What IO need is an overhead adjustable support that works in the xyz directions. Cheers
