GMT400 4x4 K1500 Coilover Swap Update - Are They Right For Your OBS?

- So we threw some coilovers on Clifford a while back. Here’s how they are doing so far! Plus my thoughts on how they will help at the track and which trucks these may or may not be a good idea on. @atomic178

Love the GMT400 content, I am glad your doing this R&D for us. I am thinking about pulling the trigger on something like this maybe next year specifically for the weight reduction and shock tuning.
What I’m curious about is leveled 4x4 guys, it’s no secret that when you tighten your keys your truck rides worse. So I’m curious as to if you swap to a coil over set up on a leveled truck if it would improve greatly being that you don’t have the front end tightened up nearly as much
I am with you. i want to level my truck without the torr.reset as i also have heard this kills the ride. I would like to get about 1-1/2 -2"of higher front end
Felt that one. After pulling the trans in my dually 4 damn times I’d love for all the torsion bar shit to be out of my way. Although I’ve gotten good at it 🤣
Sameeeee
Main reason I wanted a coil over swap is because I wanted to put a 2 wheel 700r4 but since it’s shorter than the original with the transfer case on it the driveshaft hits the torsion bar crossmember.
Good video and spot on with the end about who this is and is not a good idea for. Installing coilovers on your lifted truck will not make it a prerunner than you can jump through the dunes like a trophy truck. Torsion bars are not the sexiest thing, but they are very tough and durable, so for heavy duty applications they are still a good choice.
People have to know where to draw the line.
Stop killing the game. Just take all my money now lol
Will the conversion parts for this be available at any point, I am looking drop the front of my tahoe by 2-3 inches, my torsion bar crossmember is cracked so I would like to get rid of it all together.
Mr. Atomic, any plans for a full front coilover conversion kit for us K1500 guys ? Or do you recommend this method?
I did a solid axle swap on my sled pulling truck and I
the torsion bar crossmember being gone is such a benefit
How are they as far as flex goes? For the 4x4 wheeling guys that don’t want to spend the money on full blown sas swap. This might be a great option?
It has been such a tremendous relief not have them dam things in the way ! And that’s weird about what ride quality, mine rode much much better. I think I agree with u on already having the Vikings on why u couldn’t really tell
Yeah, my truck rods very well already so I didn’t have much improvement to make haha.
@@DigginZ71 i agree, if you were already used to the shocks you wouldn't notice much, but the benefits are definitely still there!
Awesome video been waiting to hear how they ride. Are they off the shelf Vikings or custom valved?
They are off the shelf valving. They are some of Vikings “Radial Tie Down” valving.
Hopefully they make a after for the 4x4 gmt400 alot of people still have them
Could you pass over the part number or website where you got them ? Trying to lower my truck at the moment
They should just make adapter plates for the bottom shock mount
What shocks where u using before doing the coil over conversation, I need some drop shocks for my lowered k1500
I’m interested to
What's your rear lowering kit?
I'm really looking forward to doing this
AFP did a great job
Looks like you need some kryptonite suspension components...👀👍🏻
have you noticed front-back movement when putting the truck back on the ground? would like to put my truck on coils but I'm concerned with the fact that the coils are slanted back. i would think that it would push back on the control arm while there's weight on it
What size tires are on those 18" wheels. When you do the drop do you need lowering shocks front and rear? Looking for answers before I do this
Hey I have a question. I’m doing this lowering on my 4x4. I have the same wheels. I was wondering what size tires you are running on those factory wheels?
Best thing I did to my 97 z71 was replace the timing cover with an aluminum timing cover from summit racing.
I am really tempted on getting the AFP kit for a 3” Lift.
I plan to replace the lower shock mounting tabs with a triangulated mount which will be reinforced.
I run almost all gravel roads and two tracks so there’s a lot washboards and bumps I go over.
I really like Bilstein 5100s at stock height, but I wanted a little taller mud tire so I’ve went up to a 33 and did the torsion bar leveling kit with the keys cranked up with new 5100s and it really rides rough.
I have front and rear bumpers and also rock sliders. Do you think this kit has enough adjustment to tune it for my mods?
Thank you!!
Great video. Super clean. I’m thinking about doing this to my 99 2door 4x4 Tahoe and my 90 k1500 shortie!! The Tahoe I may be putting in a Lt4/8l90 in soon! Anyone who knows all of the correct parts I need ,, there’s money in it for you$$$$$$$$$$$$$!!!

How did you install then ?
I’ve been doing some research I recently studying these trucks, witch brand shock is that?
What was the part #s for the coilovers?

Hey I haven’t seen another video about the coil overs, I really want a set for my truck but not sure where I can find them, any help is appreciated, thanks
Could you please put the links for all parts you are using it in your conversion
Is that top side down?
do you happen to know the part # for those coil overs.
Yes, but I would like to do more testing before I recommend them.
@@DigginZ71 ok thanks im changing over to a k1500 frame on my 97 and im boxing the frame where it curbs under the cab because my c1500 got bent and the cross member that holds the torsion bars is a bit on the way so thats why im looking to do what you did with coil overs.
I understand u don't want to recommend parts # do u remember the travel and ride height measurements I getting read to do this and would like to order some before I start so I don't have to wait also do u know what truck weighs for spring ordering
Were did you happen to order the coil over set up and what size did you go with
atomicfabandperformance.com/product/obs4wdcoilovers/ use "KeepDiggin" in the checkout notes!
How low are the coilover drop
Badass could I get info on the parts and pat numbers
are those coilovers shorter than the original? if you were to adjust it all the way up how close to factory ride height do you think you would be?
Yes, these are much shorter than factory. But luckily, there are factory heigh options available at AFP’s website. 🤘
Were can i buy the coilovers ? Or parts number can u help

are we ready to share our findings with the world I'm ready to order these asap lol

What are the part numbers for these??
atomicfabandperformance.com/product/obs4wdcoilovers/ use "KeepDiggin" in the checkout notes!
What about keeping the torsion bar crossmember just as a brace👀just a thought.
Richard at AFP doesn’t think it is needed. I am no expert, but I trust what he thinks.
What’s the brand
About to find out if this works on a suburban 😂
Haha jump it!
How’d it work out for you??
@@TheRavDaddy I don’t know I’m trying to put them on right now
@@Stapleton42 I wanted to go for more of a long travel setup, ended up doing a 6” rough country lift and I’m gonna end up having to do shock hoops and a custom upper control arm in order to do the coilover swap on mine. Good luck!!
All over this video😇
How much?
How are the shock towers looking? Any cracks or anything? Been wanting to do this for awhile
So far, so good!
@@DigginZ71how are the shock towers now ?
Where did you get that kit I would like to purchase one

Does the 4x4 still work doing this to it because I want to lower my 98 z71 as well
Yep, Works great!

Any tips on lowering the front of a 4x4 obs? I got a 4x4 obs that I want to drop but I don’t know how to go lower
Checkout wayyyy down on my videos. I have one detailing how I lowered mine.
@@DigginZ71 what center link and tie rods are u running? Can u send links, because I think my truck still has a center link for a 7 inch lift truck, and I’m at a 6 inch or 7 inch drop in the front now
I just have the stock center link in mine and the tie rods are mevotech ttx with Cunningham machine tie rod sleeves
@@DigginZ71 ok thanks a lot once again 😁
Wjat exactly were the part number for. You because everyone says they have nun.. So if I could get. Your part number because I need. Some. For. Mine also

So I'm guessing the coil over are holding up very well...is that means ur gonna tell us the part number for the coil overs lol
Haha so far, so good! I am still unsure if it’s something I would wildly recommend to everyone but in a street truck application, they seem to be doing just fine at this point.
@@DigginZ71 what’s the shock
Whats the model number for those coilovers?

Part number for the coil over?
atomicfabandperformance.com/product/obs4wdcoilovers/
what shocks did u originally run when lowered
It had some cheap competition engineering shocks on the front of it and the original front shocks relocated to the rear.
@@DigginZ71 got a part number for what u recommend up front for a shock?
Your best bet is to put the truck at the ride height you want and then measure the shock lengths you need. I just got on summit and found something that was the correct length extended and collapsed and ordered them. Super easy and guarantee perfect fitment!
Do you have the part number?
atomicfabandperformance.com/product/obs4wdcoilovers/ use "KeepDiggin" in the checkout notes!
Failure waiting for a place to happen.
Where can I find parts for this conversion? AFP?
Yes, if we determine these to be good to go, then everything will be available through AFP.
Can a get a name and part number I wanna do this to my 92
atomicfabandperformance.com/product/obs4wdcoilovers/ use "KeepDiggin" in the checkout notes!
lol if it rides like a shit brick house coil overs will still let it ride like a shit brick house
Haha the coil spring won’t fix bad suspension angles and worn parts.
Your method of weighing the torsion bars and cross member is absolutely ridiculous.
