What's really great about a pro drummer like you doing a virtually note for note cover is that it shows the same parts can still sound vastly different based on the musicians own feel, technique, and equipment. It still feels like your take on playing the parts because it encompasses your immense technical precision and how rock solid your internal clock is.

With Estepario he can definitely play a song almost note for note. On the other hand like for a stringed instrument such as a guitar or Dobro (like I play), I can play pretty close to what I recorded on stage but I’m not sure that I ever played a song note for note as interpretation, mood, accents from band members maybe playing some other runs, licks, etc., that you feed off of & it can change exactly how you play it for that night. I’ve been playing music for 41+years & that’s just my 2-cents worth!

The sheer endurance of sustaining that takes a lot of practice. I've been working on this song a little bit at time for better than a decade and wrist motion helps keep the extra juice to keep going but shooooo it's a workout. I wish I could do the fills. More time and practice

    • @mogglie

It’s ok. Drummers should work their single strokes up to this level. And a bit higher. Just to be safe. It takes some work. But it’s not impossible. Start slow and remain relaxed. I think this song is 160bpm or something.
Being stabile in the all mighty RLRL is a by far a drummers most important tool. You won’t go far without a mastery of this.
I’ve actually played this very song many times just to practice.

To think Hawkins played this night after night, as the last song of every single live set they ever did, playing almost non stop 16th notes on that high hat... I think I have listened to this video around 50 times. Let me see how to say this. In the world of music, there are not a lot of musicians who know what the music is supposed to sound like. When you find the ones that do it’s a treat to listen to them, because you know they’ve got it. This song doesn’t need any tweaking, but only a person who knows what it’s supposed to sound like would know that.
