Damn Frey, awesome video. You're right they bite; you have to put in the work. Salmon/ Steelhead fishing is as addicting as it gets. They absolutely will kick your butt. Check your gear, make sure everything is right and tied right. When you hook one it hurts if you lose it because something wasn't right. Hope to see you out and about in the coming weeks!! I noticed there are a lot more males hooked up than females. I get that a lot too over here on skein and cranks. Not sure if the males are more aggressive and territorial or the females are further back and coming in later in the season. Great video once again, love the bobber downs and reel screams. Great start to the season for you, Fray.
More males run first larger number of females coming behind.
It's the aggression in the male salmon. You know how they're constantly looping around holes biting at the other males and trout? Same idea with spinners, cranks. When it comes to skein I'd say it's about equal for hits in my experience both in Ontario and out in BC
That’s crazy cause this season has been all hens for me I’ve only got 2 bucks lol and all the rest hens
Males push up river first before females make their way up
I do get a lot of hens on the spinners. However, all bucks so far this year

Usually 30-40lb braid mainline, 20lb fluorocarbon leader
Chartruese n pink n orange n purple n red spinners n cranks work well...Always love early smashes... more power n acrobatics...Let me know if you ever come to Ontario... heaviest leader i run is 8lbs... n drop down to 3lb in gin water

So this is my first year I’m gonna use a centerpin, I’m using an okuma aventa on a 13ft centerpin rod with 10lb test, would this be good enough to land some kings?
I would strongly recommend upping your mainline so that you can run a minimum of 12lb leader for kings. However, anythings possible, you definitely could land one on 10
@@FishFray it would definitely be possible, but probably wouldnt work when your around a bunch of people. Sadly my rod is only rated for 4-10 lb lines so I don’t think I would be able to push in the 20 lbs like yours

I like the stock trebles! They bend out of snags easily, but land fish well

Yeah it's not generally very fast. Very small operation

Hello I am a student at MTU and am wondering about different baits. I have never salmon fished before and am wondering what casting baits like spinners or cranks work for the fall run. Also I know you recommend Arctic spinners for a brand but are there any other brands that you have has success with? Any info will be helpful. Thanks so much!
I only use arctic spinners for king salmon! For cohos I will throw a #3 mepps
Size up any mepps spinners and they will work for kings

Keep them in the water until they start kicking! Usually they come around pretty quick

Your “buddy” Ryan was keeping, taking the eggs, and then dumping the fish in the woods at river 2 launch. Don’t believe go look at the carcasses in the woods to the right of the boat ramp if your facing the river. He was also running about a 15 foot set in a hole that was no deeper then 8 ft with a 6 ft trailer to a hook with nothing on it off his skein, just your average discount guide doing discount guide things.
If that's true, then that is poor. He was fishing legit when I fished with him.
@@FishFray I didn’t take a pic of the dead fish, but next time I’m there I will. He had 3 hens on stringer that were chrome when he passed us, then as we got back to the launch we heard what sounded like logs being thrown in the bushes. But, once I got up to it I found him curing the row without a cooler or fish carcass in sight. He was also parked in the center of the turn around for the launch and I could barely fit by him, once he left my buddy went and looked where we heard the sounds and saw the carcass barely covered up.
@@FishFray the reason Ik he was snagging is cause your set about half the depth he was in the same hole 😂😂😂. And the water looks even higher then when I was there 😂😂.
