  • I am reacting to Saberspark's video, "The Disney Remakes Problem (Is Disney Selling Out?)" to discuss if Disney's live-action remakes are any good. With The Little Mermaid coming out soon, I thought this was relevant.

As a woman of color, I hate how many people are rallying behind the race-swapping in Disney’s remakes. Instead of giving us original stories with the same love and care that went into their previous movies, Disney is throwing us their table scraps, and we’re defending it. Disney is a multimillion dollar company. They need to do better

I agree. I mean, they pat themselves on the back for race-swapping Ariel, but yet there's still no live-action remake of Princess and the Frog to bring Tiana into the spotlight. I believe she's getting a tv-series, but that's not the same. Also, it's been 14 years since that movie came out and Disney hasn't given us another (original) black princess. That shows how much they really care about 'representation'.

    • @cat0fp0rtals39
      @cat0fp0rtals39 Рік тому +38

Some new originals with people of color would be great and is very needed. That said, I might just be ignorant but I don't like to assume that Ariel is black for representation reasons. I like to think it's because she was the best actress for the job, and I'd hate for a good actor to be denied this fun role just because they're not white. It's stupid to me that her skin color is even an issue to so many people. I don't see why race swapping is a bad thing unless the film is centered around the experience of a particular group of people, which The Little Mermaid is not. For that reason I defend the choice of a black actress, pending when I actually get to see the movie and develop my final opinion on if the movie is actually good and if the actress is actually good in the role. I could be overlooking something though. That's just my opinion as a white person.

@@cat0fp0rtals39 I totally respect your opinion, but I truly don't think that's the case. Surely, Hailey is extremely talented and her voice is great for the role (I don't know anything about her acting). But there are other factors at play here: The movie has Lin Manuel Miranda working on the music, a man who is famous for Hamilton, where they race-swap real people in history who were white. Before this, Disney worked with Beyonce (as the voice of Nala) in the CGI version of the Lion King. Hailey and her sister are musicians under Beyonce's label. Surely there is a connection there. It is only an assumption of mine, but I don't think Hailey had to audition and compete with white girls for the role. I think they knew from the beginning that they wanted to do this. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I doubt it.

What Disney and a lot of their media companies are doing is pandering to queer communities and POC in hopes of getting more money out of them. I wish more people would take note of that. People have to go without sleep or family to make a lousy version of somethinhg they put heart and soul into. It stays true to Cinderella's approach on feminism without making it too woke, they actually managed to give Prince Charming a personality, they established more plot that was both relevant to the story and to Cinderella's character, and the costume designs were amazing. @@Evening2458 Live action Cinderella wasn't bad or anything... It was pretty good as *A* Cinderella movie... But as a remake... I really prefer the original.
Animated Cinderella was _so_ strong. She was a young woman trapped in an abusive home since she was a child. But she was still sassy, and proactive, and hopeful. She worked hard in all the ways she could to make her life better.
Live action Ella was kinda... Passive and dreamy tbh.
Like, there's one scene that says so much about the differences between the two movies imo. When she gets locked in the attic by the Stepmom while the Sisters are trying on the glass slipper at the end of the movie.
Cinderella screams and shouts and bangs on the door, and then when it seems hopeless, she hears her animal friends and begs them for help, and with that help she gets out, and runs down just in time.
Ella... Sings a cute song while sitting by the windowsill... And the only reason the Prince and servants hear her and realize there's another girl in the house, is cause the animal friends decide to open the _unlocked_ window all on their own. (And if the attic is so far down they can hear her singing to herself, I'm pretty sure they'd have heard a "Excuse me! I've been locked in the attic! Could someone get me out? I'd like to try the shoe too please!")

I disagree with this. That would hammer it in even more that south asia and the middle east are just interchangeable to Disney and to Hollywood in general apparently. The fact that Jasmine is not played by an Arab is bad enough. That's one of the reasons that people complaining about Ariel being black in the live action pissed me off so much because I don't remember a single complaint about Jasmine's casting but that was fine because all brown people are the same right? Apparently "accuracy" only matters when it concerns white characters. I love Naomi Scott but she should not have played Jasmine. She is the only Arab princess we have and the role should have went to an Arab actress. Bollywood has nothing to do with Arabs and the middle east, Aladdin is not an indian character but after watching the movie you wouldn't know the difference because it treats us as interchangeable. This is why a lot of Arabs refused to watch the movie, it's erasure and frankly insulting.

She’s now in her teens and we’ve seen the more original movies in theaters, like Tangled and Frozen, but none of the Live-action, those we watch on DVDs from the library. She kind of grew up watching what I did growing up in the 90s.
A lot of her friends though, did get inspired to watch the originals because of the Live-action. A common opinion was that the animated ones were better and that they wished they’d seen those in theaters. Which makes me wonder if what Disney wants is money, why not rerelease the animated ones in theaters every 10 years or so. Market it using that nostalgia “Now you can take your kids to experience the classics of your childhood!” They’d make so much money from that.

Gobbling up IP's left and right has caught up with them, along with other issues that I don't need to get into. If Disney still wants to make money off of nostalgia, that's the route to take.
They could even clean up any animation that hasn't aged well so that it'll still look good in something like 4K. I imagine that would still be cheaper than having to hire new actors, rewrite the script, build sets, abuse CGI artists, etc.

With maleficent, it worked for me because of the original fairytale - the fairy that curses sleeping beauty was the only one out of 13 to be not invited to the baptism of the baby, which was a huge insult.
Some movie fairytale versions also make the King be even more insulting - in the story, the reason he doesn't invite the fairy is because they were going to let the faes eat from golden plates, but one was missing and their creator was dead. No one else could remake them like this.
The King in the movie fairytale version doesn't invite the fairy of diligence, saying it's an unnecessary trait for princess. It's this added resulted of diligence being called useless that she curses the kid. She goes through a redemption arc later by guarding sleeping beauty and letting a prince in who she tests and knows is worthy.

Oh, I bet you there are a TON of people working for Disney who have some truly stunning ideas for films. Companies don't want to take a single "risk" anymore, because it's not about making good film...it's about shutting up the stock holders, keeping them quiet and content, so they keep shoving more money into the C-suite's pockets. Because that investor money, hell ANY of the money Disney makes, sure as shit isn't going to the people who do the actual labor to make all this shit. These movies aren't made for humans; they're made for shareholders. Since almost the entire stock market is held by a few giant financial firms, it's not real people these movies are for. It's just one soulless company making films for the pleasure of another soulless company. They're not really meant to be watched as we understand it. Plus, the far right, in the US at least, will cause a huge noise if there's even a hint of "wokeness", whatever the hell that even is since it seems to constantly change to fit a narrative. So I'm sure there's truly amazing stories floating around Disney that won't be told because there are giant forces making the company do the same derivative garbage over and over. I mean, look at the giant stink that was made over a film talking about, GASP, PERIODS! Now imagine if, good forbid, A TRANS is anywhere near the camera! So don't expect Disney to ever tread new ground because it'll never happen in the current climate.

But this, in my country, makes no sense. The majority here is mestizo and mixed race. And because of Disney's decision to mix political and racial agendas in a poorly done way, taking advantage of actors suffering hate and trying to pass a false image of those who care about diversity, this collaborated even more with the polarization of something so serious.

I have SO many memories of babysitting my niece, dancing around and singing that i couldnt being myself to see these LA ones. Beauty and the Beast is my fave but i can probably recreate every scene of Aladdin. To this day i can reenact the entire Friend Like Me scene lol!! But even as an adult without my niece i loved Disney princess movies. I own The Princess and the Frog. I loved Brave (i know people dont like it but i do). I own a lot of the old ones and love them. But i will say Disney no longer makes memorable songs that you love to sing that never get old (or annoying). I miss that 💔.

I haven't seen the Mulan, Dumbo or Aladdin remakes; heard such negative things about them that I was afraid to see what they had become. I did see Cruella, since it's a familiar character with a different story. It has serious moments yet doesn't dwell on them for long, it made her character understandable but didn't make the audience feel too much empathy, keeping a quick-pace (sort of the Disney Harley Quinn). Overall it was a fun ride and I recommend it👍

The only live action that I think should have been made was Pete's Dragon. It was significantly different from the original, had something new to say, and fankly, the original wasn't exactly that good. All the rest were too similar to justify a whole remake. Maleficent and Cruella were the only others that told a different story, but they felt like they should be in a Wicked series, where they explore the classic villains. Cruella would have been the second in that series if they leaned into it. I would much rather they leaned into these live action alternate universe versions of their villains to tell a different story about them than basically copy/pasting their old stories.

My favorite movie growing up was Mary Poppins. I feel bad for my poor parents that had to sit through that long movie that many times. When I got older, they made Saving Mr. Banks. That movie is basically about how Disney bought the rights to the Mary Poppins book and changed it to the point where the author completely hated the work. It painted Disney as the bad guy in the situation, actually. Being interested in creating films myself, I found the movie to be very interesting and I definitely recommend it to those interested in that story, but at the time it felt like an apology from the company to the author of this book. When they made the new Mary Poppins, I got upset. Though I can't speak for the quality of the movie, knowing that this universe has been expanded felt like a kick in the junk. Why make a movie saying that you completely changed someone's source material and mostly used the popularity of the book to sell tickets to something kinda like the book and that Disney did this woman wrong here and then go and make a new movie?
These new movies can be entertaining, but not everything that is entertaining is art. Art is what can change people and bring them together. One of my screenwriting professors used to say something close to "Really bad movies and really good movies have one thing in common; you talk about them after you watch the movie. Mediocre movies won't even be discussed on the ride home from the theater."
Drop some good film or show recommendations if you made it this far. It's hard to find them these days.

Brittney, perhaps you should watch old videos of the soap opera "Dynasty" from the 1980s, and watch Joan Collins in her role as Alexis Carrington. My Favorite Disney Remakes:
    1. By the way: Cinderella (It has become generally one of my favorite films. It is beautiful, cozy, fabulous. I can watch it under any mood)
    2. Aladdin (A huge plus of this film was Jasmine, played by Naomi Scott. I liked the character in the movie much more than the cartoon character. And so the film itself is quite gone. It is bright, musical, very aesthetic)
    3. Maleficent (This is one of my mom's favorite movies, but it also came to me. Cool dark fantasy)
    4. Cruella (After this film, I went in black-white-red colors for two more weeks. And also this movie is very fashionable and cool)
    5. Alice through the Looking Glass (He was bright and witty)
    6. Christopher Robin (He was very sweet and sincere. Just the feeling of childhood began to play. Not my personal childhood, the excerpts from it, but the sensations of this childish state)
    7. Beauty and the Beast (It probably helped me that I watched the Russian dubbing and all the actors could sing (although I listened to it in English and it was quite normal, maybe I just had a bear on my ear). And so it's quite normal. Although Gaston was supposed to be played by Henry Cavill and the yellow dress, as if not from this movie...
I think I liked a lot of remakes, one way or another. And it will probably be easier to name which films I didn't like.
It will definitely be: The second Maleficent (I liked the outfits there... I can't remember the other advantages... Aurora is good there... That's all I'm afraid of.); Pinocchio (They certainly gave the kid a lot of shit, literally and figuratively. He is very cringe-like in places); the Lion King (a burden that I have already seen. And that's where all the dissatisfied reviewers hit the bull's-eye, so it's that realistic, emotionless animals will not look organically in a musical number!); and Mulan did not roll me in (There was a lot of things that were wrong and not logical both in the film and behind the scenes).

That studio at least has a respect for animation and is still producing new shows and IPs that everybody could appreciate, like The Owl House, Amphibia, The Ghost and Molly McGee, Hamster and Gretel, etc. Their future projects look even promising.
