What I'm most excited about is that the guy has played the games extensively and it's a fan. Not necessarily an indication of success, but I think this has potential.
With Nathan Fillion's Uncharted short and all the info about MGS movie it really seems like we're on a verge of finally getting a proper game adaptation. And there needs to be only a couple done properly for studios to begin making more of them. What a time to be alive.
The biggest problem with videogame movies is that no one making them seems to remember they're movies. The one thing a movie can still do better than a game is deliver a tight, focused story. But for whatever reason, game-based movies throw away that home-court advantage in the planning stage. It may be a result of trying to please too many masters, the producers AND the game publishers. Regardless, it's what kills every game movie. No one cares that much that DOOM: the movie recreated DOOM game-play. No one cares that we saw Lara Croft do stuff we can do while playing her in the game. None of that matters, because they aren't doing the real work a movie needs to do to engage us. A game engages you by giving you direct control over whether the character succeeds or fails. Whether the story is good or not is secondary. Bad stories can still make for good games. Which is why MGSV works regardless of its broken story. But a movie adaptation ONLY has the story. Will Jordan Vogt-Roberts be able to do it? Sadly, nothing I've seen so far indicates this. No matter how great Skull Island was as a visual feast (and it was truly great in that regard), no matter how closely his skill at dramatic cinematography matches the cinematic style of the games (really closely), he still hasn't proven that he can shepherd a movie script that makes any more sense than MGSV's story (the result of Kojima being fired off his own game in the middle of production). And that's just not enough for a real movie. Or at least, not a good one. Skull Island didn't prove that Vogt-Roberts can make a great MGS movie. It only proved he could probably make a great King Kong game. I mean, the bar is low. It's safe to assume that he can probably make the greatest videogame-based film in history. But a genuinely good film? I'll believe it when I see it.
I want a Johnny Joke All the classic lines like Snake Snake SNAAAAAKE! Your pretty good la li lu le lo kept waiting huh A post credit scene that's just Ocelot on the phone with some one Boxes Rations Key cards Cigarettes A cyborg ninja
It'd be super interesting but I'd rather have it remade as a classic MGS game with MGS2's mechanics and such. Sure we could have both a film adaptation and the game but the game might be seen as a cash in..
With a series like Metal Gear, I think a miniseries would work best. Maybe 4-8 one hour episodes? They would benefit from being between games and add some nuance to the progression. You can't really set it after Metal Gear 4 since that would be too far ahead and remaking the games as a movie would be redundant. I think an episodic miniseries may work however. Kojima wouldn't be on the project, which would suck for the atmosphere of the set as well. All in all I do hope it goes well. Best of luck!
By making anything "between games"(or including them in games' timeline at all) you're cutting off everyone, but hardcore fans. This is a terrible approach that will never make any money.
I think people are over complicating this too much, People want to see everything the game showed into film but it just wouldn't work, We need to see a film with a SOLID main character Solid Snake, a few villians Sniper Wolf, Ocelot and Rex showing the reason why Rex would be so devastating in real life and some great action scenes. When you start over complicating things is when things start to go to hell.
Zen, you couldnt be more correct imo.. A movie based on"MGS" would be the perfect candidate. The Metal Gear franchise as a whole is heavily inspired by cinema to begin with. To me it makes perfect sense to see this franchise come to the silver screen.
Jordan Voght-Roberts is the filmmaking messiah that was prophesied to not only enlighten the masses to the story of Metal Gear Solid but also finally make a great movie based off of a video game. 🙌🏼🙏🏻
From what I got from him, He will begin the game with MGS1 (PS1), and progress from there to the future MGS2 & MGS4, with interval flashbacks to the past MGS3 and the first volumes ever release. don't think he will go into MGS5, although it might become a sequel. Very interesting to see the final project completed.
I feel that ‘Fillion plays Drake’ Uncharted fan-film is a fantastic example of HOW to adapt Metal Gear. Not a straight remake but very loyal to the source material.
Considering David Hayter is a writer, actor, and director as well as being heavily involved with MGS up until the latest games, I'd say bringing him on to the project would be a good idea. I'd say the best way to do the game would be to use the source material as basis: Big Boss and Solid Snake are supposed to be the world's greatest soldiers and the way to get the Big Boss emblem is being incredibly good at stealth. Have those tense scenes where whoever is Snake is sneaking around and being that elite stealth combatant, then shift to the bigger scenes where he interacts with other people or fights whatever boss he runs into.
It will be amazing. The source material already is based in cinematic style and narratives so will play out perfectly. Mgs has a formula just like the greatest franchises on screen already have. Can not wait!!

I feel like you gotta do what the MCU has done for comic book characters. There's movies that *draw* from arcs/memorable stories but its more a distillation of everything that makes that character and their stories so memorable presented in a new way/as its own. So I think Vogt-Roberts is on the right track. Taking elements of what *makes* Metal Gear Metal Gear to us as its fans, and re-presenting it in a new format as a new story for both people that are completely unfamiliar with it and that also hits all the notes that makes a Kojima Metal Gear story. Its a delicate dance, but I feel like Vogt-Roberts is walking the line well, with what he's said about the project so far. Just make a new story about all these familiar characters. A new "continuity," or however you want to think of it. I'm on board. I really hope this project see's the greenlight.
as a huge fan whose played every metal gear at least 10 times (excluding the nes versions)I have high hopes of this movie after watch an interview with the director ( Jordan V. Roberts)It’s obvious he has a very strong passion for metal gear so I’m excited as hell tbh

Would've been cool if they got David Hayter to do the screenplay. I'd be down with that sorta realistic, takes-itself-self-so-seriously take on a completely absurd notion that Watchmen did. Not to mention, Hayter actually appears to genuinely love the series, has played it, and seems to know it very well. Also, let's be honest, it would've just been cool if the actual Snake wrote the Metal Gear movie haha.
I think what I'd want from any video game movie is expanding on the story points of the game, while replacing gameplay with more character development + a few action setpieces that feel like it would fit organically into the game's universe.
I'm cautious but I'm optimistic. Vogt-Roberts clearly loves his Metal Gear and knows what he's talking about: If he can find a group of executives to trust his vision then I think we're in for something really special.
I'd be ok if he took a MCU approach to Marvel movies vs comics. They dont directly copy the comics yet they stay true to them leaving you not exactly sure which direction they're going. It could spawn off to other mgs character centered movies. The Boss, Shalashaska, Liquid, Solidus, even Riaden could make good movies if this first one is done right
IDK im pretty damn excited for this..... And i think hes the guy for the job since he is such a genuine fan not just of games but of the franchise and Kojima...and wants Kojimas involvement and feedback. I think MGS IS super cinematic and Kojima has talked about how many cut scenes his games have, so for there to be a movie dedicated to the story i think is amazing and something Kojima has wanted to do. I don't know, but I really think it would be a great ideo if he did a movie based on the original Metal Gear for the MSX! That would be pretty damn awesome as most of the MGS fans have never actually played it or even know it exists.
No reason to mix up the games. Just do the Shadow Moses incident in like a 2.5-3 hour film then go from there. MGS can be like a MI/007 type franchise in the film world. I’d also make MGS 5 a tv series on FX of HBO. Even with cutting out the extra fluff in MGSV you’d still have enough for a good 4 seasons with great cliffhangers. You’d bring a whole new fan base to the franchise with film adaptions that are done right, the same way the MCU did. Hell I’d be ok with an animated film of sorts based on the games similar to the Final Fantasy film years ago, just hopefully better lol
Metal Gear really needs an auteur director to handle the storytelling, characters and visual scope. Stanley Kubrick would've had a field day with this material if he was still alive, but maybe guys like Christopher Nolan, Denis Villeneuve, or even Cary Fukunaga would've probably been best. As long as the script is top notch, I would trust any of those directors with Metal Gear.
I so want this to be great but im sceptical. If i had a dream director it would be Quinton Tarantino, he would make a great cinematic movie with a deep story in his own style. Even tho MGS has elements in his style from music to cut scenes\shots and even enemys.
Robert's is going to try and put stuff from all the games, which is a fail, imo. The Boss & Big Boss needs character dev. So does Solid. So does Venom. So does Master. Unless there's sequels planned. The story is going to crash n burn.
* Seph - he needs to make a solid movie that could stand on its own then if it's successful he could branch out. I don't think it's that hard to make a movie if they start at the twin snake story line between solid vs. liquid
In the eyes of any fan yeah it would be because it's not a coherent timeline but you have to understand he doesn't believe that this will be made into a trilogy of franchise, He's giving his best at 1 film, So yeah guys like Big Boss and Solid Snake need dev and frankly Venom Snake is fairly irrelevant. But there's only so much you can do with a series of games that is so complicated.
i'm absolutely convinced this movie will switch between the timelines of big boss and solid snake, something we haven't seen in mgs and that (arguably) logistically can't be well executed in games; films however excel at this sort of mechanic, better than books even for similar logistical reasons, so this idea that we don't need an mgs movie because cutscenes is mostly invalid to me. also the gameplay in mgs is aggressively segregated from the cutscenes, if there is one film adaption we don't need it's unchartered because they are trying their best in those games to make the gameplay and cutscenes seamless and film-like, the mgs mythos however can be approached in a myriad of different ways, and i am somewhat apprehensively excited for this movie.
I think the comedy aspect will be the hardest thing to nail without looking stupid. In MGS it seems like all the characters are in on the joke and it’s up to the player to decide if it’s funny or not.
Idk man, i just don't want it to turn out like the Mario movie did way back when... i feel like that might have been the first ever attempt to make a movie out of a game, and i feel like it pretty much fell on it's face... on the other hand, ive seen the one interview and I do believe that the guy might be onto something that might actually be good, i mean the way he talks about it, its like its gonna be done his way, but it's with the most respect he could give to the game series, im a huuuge fan of the game series btw, Big Boss is a beast, i just hope the guys at Sony Productions give it a green light, cause I'm excited as all hell here!! yeah, i get what everybody else says, "I'd rather just play the game." dude, i hope you guys realize that nobody has really done this the right way yet, so this movie could actually be a ground breaking event for the entire franchise of Metal Gear.. we should all try to encourage Sony to say yes.
shit, i almost forgot about Resident Evil, honestly that series was pretty good to start, but they let the movies kinda take over, so now the games have kinda... lost the feeling they used to have... idk that's just my personal opinion, after the games got killed by the movies, i feel like the movies kinda killed themselves... i haven't really looked at anything RE related in a while though, so idk if im correct about it or not... either way though, lets give this guy a chance to change history here!
your central negative point - that an adaptation is unnecessary because the original was so good - is kind of moot since it essentially renders any and all movie adaptations redundant. the appeal of a big screen adaptation shouldn't need to be spelled out, it's obviously a more immersive experience than the source medium, yes even a very cinematic game, so yes they're all by their very nature unnecessary but if a good movie come out of it then no harm, no foul. also adaptations don't tend to be verbatim, it's an opportunity to change things up so only the most well-known and beloved stories (think the lord of the rings trilogy) will be adapted strictly close to the source material. this partly justifies an adaptation's existence since it generally doesn't simply repeat the original but in movie form; it strikes out on its own at least in some ways. basically it doesn't matter whether it's necessary or not, just if it's good or not
It can work... Set up a mini-series, that may lead into the film, but maintain its narrative. 4 episodes should be plenty, have it wrap up some loose ends but not answer all the big questions. Release the film as a globe trotting thriller, like the Bourne series, Captain America: Winter Soldier, or take queues from the Bond series. Do 4 more episodes to set up another arc, and sequel.
Exactly, what can a movie offer to the Metal Gear story that cannot already be as effectively expressed in the games? If a movie has nothing unique to offer, then really do we even need the movie? Because that would just end up being a watered down version of the Metal Gear experience.
Perhaps movies are not the way to go for adapting video games. May be Hollywood should try adapting them as television series. Characters could be flushed out more and you dont have to cram everything into a couple of hours. Also you could fit side quests in a series.
As a heads up for people from the future, the screen writer has a terrible track record loaded with flops and Vogt Roberts has only succeeded at action shlock ala Miachael Bay. Both have only worked on over the top (bar one indie film by Vogt Robert) films in which giant monsters or dinosaurs fight.
Treat it as a comic book movie like marvel have done use source material but make the movie it’s own universe keep the locations tech lore and stealth from the games but don’t follow the games from 1 to 5. I like the idea of doing the original mgs before ps1 as I didn’t know they existed lol but again make there own story with the dramatic moments should make a good franchise
Best way to do a movie would be to make it a continuation of the story rather than a reenactment of what was already in the games. Kinda limits the reach of who would want to see it though.
Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain could be made into a great movie. Take away the White Mamba and the Venom Snake doppelganger twist and you're good. Just focuse completely on SkullFace.
Liquid and Venom Snake are not important? Jesus christ, if this is the level the movie is gonna be at then it's already a failure. Among those story elements the least important is Skull Face, even though he is apparently the villain.
its kind of hilarious how EVERY SINGLE TIME, a new video game movie is being produced, the director comes out and talks how his movie will be diferent than the others, because he will do things "his way", not realising that THATS EXACTLY WHY THEY FAIL, its almost like a self fulfilling profecy at this point. see a game, say will do things diferently than the others, by aprouching it the same way every other failed atempt did. also, how many times have we heard them describing the games as "inspiration".
You know what needs to happen in regards to the film? The fans need to step back and stop being so critical. I really care about Metal Gear, but the film is not the game, and we should honestly be thankful that someone who really understands the source material is handling the project, WITH Kojima's 100% belief and consent. If it happens, just enjoy the ride, it's okay to be critical, but this isn't just some no name guy doing it for a quick buck. Jordan is a fan like us, so we need to support him, instead of judge the film at every turn. Open up your minds a bit, and separate game and movie.
That definitely won't happen with some, but it can happen with others. I am a prime example actually lol. I've loved Metal Gear for over half my existence, 20 years, and here I am able to separate the two, and be open minded. It's not like Hollywood is just picking it up out of the blue yeah? This movie is in the hands of Jordan Vogt-Roberts, this is beyond the ideal situation for a MG movie, we need to rejoice in that, not just beat it down at every turn. It's happening whether we like it or not, enjoy it and go for the ride. Same shit happened with Ghost In The Shell, and people couldn't let go of their love for the original and accept this is different.
Please do not forget about the Italian fan movie It really mixed live action with CGI like it belonged.. with an actor that did look close to Solid Snake and it had a decent story that differed from the games
Konami is showing every indication of doing their best to destroy the Metal Gear game series reputation and future. That leaves movie as the only current hope for the future of metal gear. But it's a movie adaptation of a game, they have an unfortunate habit of failing. But we can hope. Metal Gear Pachinko Metal Gear Survive There is no indication of Konami taking the game franchises future any more seriously than that going forward. It is neither truly alive nor truly dead
The video game movie can bring entertainment in a film form.. It becomes a problem if you perse want to do something that the games didnt. I think is exactly what made all the video game movies suck.. besides that Metal Gear Solid is very suited for a movie. No doubt that a MGS movie will be awesome if produced by Jordan.
I honestly don't think this guy knows what he's talking about and maybe never even played the games.. I think he read cliff notes and has been trained on what to say to get us to back him.. the picture of the cyborg ninja battling the Walker gear I think either he or the artist heard, do the "ninja" battling the Walker gear and put the wrong ninja.. they didn't realize it and people were like wtf and so now it's in damage control.. this is seriously demoralizing.
A Metal Gear movie sounds too good to be true, just because of how convoluted the whole series is. Hope the studios don't interfere, a true Metal Gear adaptation is definitely not going to pull in the non-gamer crowd.
I don't want to see video game elements in a movie.. I think that's where it goes all wrong.. it's like taking a college class on video game elements and saying that's what will make a great game movie... No.. nonononono.... I want to see a great video game.. turned into a MOVIE..... A fucking movie...
What I'm most excited about is that the guy has played the games extensively and it's a fan. Not necessarily an indication of success, but I think this has potential.

Chris Evans. He looks just like him, and listen to his voice in Scott Pilgrim. It’s basically a David Hayter voice
i'd watch the movie as long if jordan includes a david hayter cameo
He should make the story based on the original msx games. That would make sense canon wise and it could be meta as fuck.
nervous bc kong skull island was trash, the way he talks about the project makes me hopeful though
More importantly who will play Solid Snake!!?? Bradley Cooper would be my pick any other suggestions?
Cooper doesn't come off masculine enough. Christian Bale?
Scott Eastwood would be perfect.
If it's not David hayter then I want a no name actor.
Tommy Wiseau lel
My allstar fantasy cast Snake is a younger Clint Eastwood. Todays actors; Bradley Cooper would be great, Bale, Chris Evans.
Does it take place before or during Twin Snakes?
i'm absolutely convinced this movie will switch between the timelines of big boss and solid snake, something we haven't seen in mgs and that (arguably) logistically can't be well executed in games; films however excel at this sort of mechanic, better than books even for similar logistical reasons, so this idea that we don't need an mgs movie because cutscenes is mostly invalid to me. also the gameplay in mgs is aggressively segregated from the cutscenes, if there is one film adaption we don't need it's unchartered because they are trying their best in those games to make the gameplay and cutscenes seamless and film-like, the mgs mythos however can be approached in a myriad of different ways, and i am somewhat apprehensively excited for this movie.
My favorite game of all time solid snake!!!!!, Mgs 1 ,, snake eater , guns of the Patriots, sons of liberty , the phantom pain
I saw 'Metal Gear' and dropped dinner to watch.
Now my cat is covered in spaghetti.
Yes we do
I think the comedy aspect will be the hardest thing to nail without looking stupid. In MGS it seems like all the characters are in on the joke and it’s up to the player to decide if it’s funny or not.
If they have Big Boss, get Michael Biehn or Kurt Russell. They were original inspirations and can still be bad ass.
Jordan k Robert my son loves Mrtal gear.He looks like Snske.Micheal would be perfect for the part of BigBoss
Please condider him.Thank you
If Kojima is working with Jordan Vogt- Roberts, then we are in luck.
WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT (x)!!! Why do news outlets keep using this phrasing? It makes me cringe, for lack of a better term.
If it bridged the gap between MGS5 and MGS it would be the best case. But if Hideo doesn't get involved in some way I'm going to fucking lose it!
Half the reason I watch this channel is just to see which band T shirt Scott is wearing
Can be Optimistic. Hope the bring Kojima in without Konami being assholes.
your central negative point - that an adaptation is unnecessary because the original was so good - is kind of moot since it essentially renders any and all movie adaptations redundant. the appeal of a big screen adaptation shouldn't need to be spelled out, it's obviously a more immersive experience than the source medium, yes even a very cinematic game, so yes they're all by their very nature unnecessary but if a good movie come out of it then no harm, no foul. also adaptations don't tend to be verbatim, it's an opportunity to change things up so only the most well-known and beloved stories (think the lord of the rings trilogy) will be adapted strictly close to the source material. this partly justifies an adaptation's existence since it generally doesn't simply repeat the original but in movie form; it strikes out on its own at least in some ways. basically it doesn't matter whether it's necessary or not, just if it's good or not
It can work...
Apparently its a new story and hideo is helping him out for the movie! Who do you see to play big boss,Snake?
Perhaps movies are not the way to go for adapting video games. May be Hollywood should try adapting them as television series. Characters could be flushed out more and you dont have to cram everything into a couple of hours. Also you could fit side quests in a series.
If the movie is an adaptation of the old Metal Gear game/s, not Metal Gear Solid, that'd get around the "treading old ground" issue.
Please make it like The Lord of the Ring series: Don't cram the whole Metal Gear lore and saga in one go.
Yes. So much yes.
A good movie is the only way we’ll get MGS6.
Kinda limits the reach of who would want to see it though.
could be good. as long as they dont try and over-complicate the movie script like they do with the games
Metal Gear Solid 5 Phantom Pain could be made into a great movie. Take away the White Mamba and the Venom Snake doppelganger twist and you're good. Just focuse completely on SkullFace.
>remove all the important plotpoints and you have a movie
lolno gtfo
Ara Ara lol those plot points weren't important. Who are you?
Liquid and Venom Snake are not important? Jesus christ, if this is the level the movie is gonna be at then it's already a failure.
Among those story elements the least important is Skull Face, even though he is apparently the villain.
How in the hell can you make solid snake without david hayter voice
My little sister listened to Bring Me the Horizon, then she turned 12.
Lolololol
its kind of hilarious how EVERY SINGLE TIME, a new video game movie is being produced, the director comes out and talks how his movie will be diferent than the others, because he will do things "his way", not realising that THATS EXACTLY WHY THEY FAIL, its almost like a self fulfilling profecy at this point.
see a game, say will do things diferently than the others, by aprouching it the same way every other failed atempt did.
also, how many times have we heard them describing the games as "inspiration".
What a sick shirt though
You know what needs to happen in regards to the film? The fans need to step back and stop being so critical. I really care about Metal Gear, but the film is not the game, and we should honestly be thankful that someone who really understands the source material is handling the project, WITH Kojima's 100% belief and consent. If it happens, just enjoy the ride, it's okay to be critical, but this isn't just some no name guy doing it for a quick buck. Jordan is a fan like us, so we need to support him, instead of judge the film at every turn. Open up your minds a bit, and separate game and movie.
ScotlandSlag that definitely won't happen but I applaud you for being an idealist
Please do not forget about the Italian fan movie
It really mixed live action with CGI like it belonged.. with an actor that did look close to Solid Snake and it had a decent story that differed from the games
Time to start playing from the first game then, i guess there are 5 of them?
I’m concerned that it’ll feel rushed. How can they fit enough stuff into a film to make it MGS without it being 5+ hours long.
Konami is showing every indication of doing their best to destroy the Metal Gear game series reputation and future.
That leaves movie as the only current hope for the future of metal gear.
But it's a movie adaptation of a game, they have an unfortunate habit of failing.
But we can hope.
Metal Gear Pachinko
Metal Gear Survive
There is no indication of Konami taking the game franchises future any more seriously than that going forward.
It is neither truly alive nor truly dead
Silent Hill is the first truly great video game movie
and then the sequel happened. Ugh, loved the first one.
Justin Miller second one was all right
True that. It's sad they fucked up the sequel so hard.
Yeah Silent Hill was a great movie. I've watched it many times. Sean Bean's in it and he goes "Bastard!"
It's good.
I agree
The video game movie can bring entertainment in a film form.. It becomes a problem if you perse want to do something that the games didnt. I think is exactly what made all the video game movies suck.. besides that Metal Gear Solid is very suited for a movie. No doubt that a MGS movie will be awesome if produced by Jordan.
Sempeternal is the bees knees SCOTT!!
Good luck with a stealth movie where the main character interacts with others 90% of the time through codec/
Silent hill movie merged the "feel" pretty good.
just to debunk. None of the art was concept art for the movie. It was all fan art as stated in the Codec.
Mgs 3 is the one to make, I mean come on its basically MGS 007
I honestly don't think this guy knows what he's talking about and maybe never even played the games.. I think he read cliff notes and has been trained on what to say to get us to back him.. the picture of the cyborg ninja battling the Walker gear I think either he or the artist heard, do the "ninja" battling the Walker gear and put the wrong ninja.. they didn't realize it and people were like wtf and so now it's in damage control.. this is seriously demoralizing.
It's called a gekko not walker gear
A Metal Gear movie sounds too good to be true, just because of how convoluted the whole series is.
Hope the studios don't interfere, a true Metal Gear adaptation is definitely not going to pull in the non-gamer crowd.
I don't want to see video game elements in a movie.. I think that's where it goes all wrong.. it's like taking a college class on video game elements and saying that's what will make a great game movie... No.. nonononono.... I want to see a great video game.. turned into a MOVIE..... A fucking movie...
can it? well he show concept art for the gekko, so that tells how close to the original it will be... expect the new tomb raider approuch...
I wish, no I hope, this seriously doesn't happen. Please. God. Don't let this happen.
