I have a neighbor with blue grass here in St Louis and he cuts it with a reel mower and cut it below 1 inch and it get very hot and humid here but his lawn always look great. He works for a golf course and takes care of the greens so he knows how to take care of it.
Golf course superintendents are more scientist than anything. I have a putting green in my backyard and without the help of a local superintendent I wouldn't have a single blade of bentgrass. Maintaining grass cut at 1/8th of an inch is seriously difficult. I have 1,000 square feet, the superintendents have acres. It's impressive.
For years I targeted using KBG. I love it. BUT once I tuned into Pete a few years back, I tried his TTTF and never saw a grass germinate like this ever before. I love both grass types. I love the super dark KBG and the super thick, more heat resistant TTTF. That’s why Pete’s TTTF/KBG mix was and is perfect for my yard.
I live in Colorado and bluegrass is the primary turf here. Definitely needs a lot of water in the dog days of summer. I keep it short in spring and fall, middle of summer 3”.
HEY PETE! I think I finally got my dirt right. I've been watching your videos and I put in some work. I bought some Blue Heat, and man oh, man... my neighbor is MAD at me. I now have the best lawn on the block. The Blue Heat, to use my buddy's words is like a really nice shag carpet. My niece came over and said, "now that's the kind of lawn you just want to take your shoes off, walk around a bit and then lie down and look at the clouds on.". BEAUTIFUL!! I can't say enough about GCI Turf, the products, and the seed.
Great video Pete! I have Kentucky Blue Grass in Philadelphia. It is a beautiful lawn. I water the heck out of it in the summer when temps start to go above 90. Because of the constant watering during that time I also have to battle fungus. It is a lot of work but it’s the best looking lawn on the block.
Your KBG Blue Heat is the best KBG I've grown, and I've tried FIVE gosh darn KBG blends and monostands over five years. I struggled to get a thick stand of KBG surrounding my bentgrass putting green. I seeded three weeks ago and I already have coverage. I used a Lesco greens grade starter and it popped quickly. Great, great product.
Been waiting and checking on the daily for that cool blue mix to be ready. Got the email today and jumped on a 25lb bag. Thanks Pete, I support you when I can. God bless.
Pete the way your feeding it this year I hope your prepared to mow every or every other day. Also I've found that new bluegrass looks best at 2in or less and it less has problems like fungus, laying over problems etc. If you have really old bluegrass lawn it wants to be mowed at 3in cause it grows up fast and has less lateral growth and more vertical. Tip: if you want to make bluegrass pop give it heavy app of iron.
I have a bentgrass putting green in my backyard in Maryland, similar climate to NC. 1,000 square feet. It's a 007/777 blend if Pete sees this. I'd love to see it too. The maintenance on a bentgrass green mowed at .145" like mine is massive. .1lbs of liquid N and K every week plus monthly granular nutrition, daily mowing, rolling, a specific fungicide program, pest control like mad, topdressing every two weeks, and basic cultural practices. The area must be perfectly smooth also, or it will not work. I would love to see him give it a try, it would be a great series. It took me two years to actually putt on my putting green but it's amazing to have now. I actually got in touch with a local golf course superintendent near me who has been a huge benefit. It's tough.
I'll be sewing bluegrass into my fescue lawn late this summer here in Louisville after seeing this. Great video! Keep the good content coming and thank you Brother!
How did these turn out for you two? I am in Louisville and currently have KBG which was here when I moved in. Love the color but it struggles in the peak of summer. Thinking of over seeding with GCI Turf Blue Heat.
Hey Pete! The bluegrass is looking great! It's awesome how your family is helping you with ideas for the business. Your children are blessed to have a smart business minded dad! Awesome content! God bless
Anyone that’s bought it and used it correctly knows Pete’s seeds no joke! Best seed I’ve used. Thanks for the prayers Pete, everything went well today hopefully headed back home tomorrow.
Hey Pete! Hope y'all are safe down there. Would be interesting to see how Hydretain sprayed on your KBG would help with drought tolerance! Blessings as always!
I would like to see how the Louisiana yard does over time! I’m wanting to put down the blue heat bluegrass in my yard. Thanks for the info and answering questions.
Bluegrass is the best! If this Blue Heat holds up to the heat, it can be a game changer. No more six months of Bermuda looking like crap, in Georgia, and you don't have to overseed Bluegrass, like you do Fescue. It's great to walk on and play on. It's best to cut it longer though. 1" is far too short. 3" to 3-1/2" is probably much better.
I can get away with 1.5 in cooler weather, nothing less than 2 in when things heat up here in central Mass. That and I find from my experience the shorter the cut the more water it needs to stave off needling/heat stress. Maybe a shorter cut provides less shade to prevent water evaporation from soil?? Pete’s 100% right, KBG is a water hog (even in cooler climates) and I think your rate limiting step to grow a thick KBG is going to be access to sufficient irrigation
I have sandy soil so I apply fert at 1/2 pound every 2.5 weeks. I tried applying 3/4 pounds every 5 but soil testing revealed it was washing through before the grass could absorb it.
This year im mowing my Midnight, Blue Note & Bewitched combination i grew last year at 2.25" my blend grows well in shade and sun. It cost me 250 for grass seed but it will be worth it this year. I apply 1 pound per 1000 and only use Milorganite and I only hafta spot treat broadleaf weeds. 4 years ago it was a crappy weedy lawn with dandelions galore. Last year I tried Ironite granular for the first time I will be applying more this season along with that black liquid seaweed or whatever LCN and Ryan Knorr sells
Sachi WI ...Sounds like you purchased it at the Seed Superstore, I did the same, the transformation of my lawn has been amazing! KBG loves nitrogen though, it needs it like it’s hooked on Meth. Don’t forget the Potassium, it helps a lot, especially a needy grass like KBG.
Milorganite serves its purpose but you’ll find over time you’re going to have to supplement with a more balanced fertilizer A KBG lawn is as nice a lawn as they come when healthy and established but from my experience it needs three things to really thrive: water, water and water Also, spoon feed throughout the season with a balanced fert, keep weeds down, mow regularly, always use a sharp blade, mulch clippings and treat pests (grubs). You can’t go wrong with soil amendments, I guess
Man, I’m eating your videos up! I’ve done some research on what you’re talking about, but they have no real on-site data like (real life) like you. Thanks for all you’re doing. God bless you and yours!
Man I wish we had a warm season turf that could stripe like those cool season grasses. I know Bermuda can be striped, but it doesn’t stripe like bluegrass.
We grow a lot of Kentucky bluegrass here in Reno Nevada. Too cold to grow warm season grass but the Summers can get over 100. Like you mentioned though Nevada is not humid and most people run irrigation here.
In PA I seeded with GCI TTTF and it looks great now. Was thinking of overseeding in the fall with blue heat just to add some variety. But i don't want to keep up with the watering so I think Ill stick to TTTF. I don't think the variety benefit outweighs dormant kbg that might make the whole lawn look sickly.
Been watching your videos all evening and just subscribed and ordered the GCI Turf Cool Blue Turf Type Tall Fescue/Kentucky Bluegrass Grass for Fall. I am having no luck with the big box store grasses (Transition Zone) keeping my fingers crossed lol
When you mix the blue grass with fescue, will the bluegrass eventually become the dominant plant if watered and fed properly? In other words, will it take over?
HI PETE, GREAT VIDEO, I MIXED PERENIAL RYEGRASS, WITH HEAT TOLERANT KENTUCKY BLUE GRASS , AT 50/50 RATE, 3LBS OF EACH FOR MY 1300 SQ FT OF GARDEN, AFTER 6 DAYS RYEGRASS IS UP BUT NO SIGN OF BLUE GRASS YET MY FRIEND, I WILL KEEP YOU UPDATED, FROM PAUL IN THAILAND.
I live in Washington state. Looking to overseed next month with your Blue Heat. I have a couple areas (approx. 2' x 7' patches) where I have compact soil that browns some when the temps get in the 90's. I think I need to kill off those areas, put new topsoil in, then reseed. When should I do the renovation part? Let the new seeded areas sit over the winter keeping in mind I do put down pre-emergent in the spring or reseed in August with my overseeding?
@Pete....whats your opinion on overseeding a KBG yard with fescue? Or is it better to kill and just go with fescue....I live in upper transition zone and can't handle 100% KBG anymore
I did my fall renovation with 100% Blue Heat....im not yet satisfied with my germination rate and fullness at no fault to the seed. As of late Sept. 22', this seed os sold out everywhere. When will GCI Turf Blue Heat be available and back in stock again, so I can either dormant or overseed in the spring?
Your friend is right in that by year two, KBG makes its mark and in full swing. But like you said, you need to water and keep a watchful eye on it especially in warmer climates. Look forward watching the test plot renovation down the road. ~ mike in VA
Something else to keep in mind is summer dormancy with blue grass. If you don't want to do a ton of watering, you can let it go dormant and turn brown, but it will still need some water to keep from dying off.
I have a crappy, “new construction”, Bermuda sod yard and I am looking forward to seeing the shop renovation! I am also near Mooresville NC and I want to stop by and get some seed to over seed soon! Thanks for the videos!
My neighbors want to know what kind of grass I have. They’re floored to find out it’s the same “crappy” Bermuda they have. Just reel mowed at .500” and well taken care of!
Another great video Sir. I am over here in Southern California with an established tall fescue lawn but I would like to mix in some Bluegrass for some more color and thickness throughout the year. I understand that you are on the other side of the world but will your seed work over here ... and which one would you recommend?
Here in the KC area (hot summers) I've been mowing my KBG sod at 3.5" and it's been laying down on the job. I have to rake it up to cut it in the shady areas and even in some of the areas where it gets more sun. Should I be cutting it shorter? I thought the taller the better with the summer sun shining on it.
That tall fescue is looking really nice. Makes me want to kill off my bluegrass. Even up north in Canada we have a hard time with bluegrass in the summer if not watering June-September. Think the a rhizomatous tall fescue might be the sweet spot between KBG/TTTF if cutting around 3”
What is the best HEAT TOLERANT SEED for VIRGINIA, I bought the GCi SEED LAST YEAR to reseed my lawn and now the whole lawn is brown even after heavy watering for this JULY
Its spring right now, do you recommend only planting Tall fescue right now and bluegrass in the fall? I wanted to do a 95% 5% mix. I live in Maryland. summer weather is around 80-98 and will have an irrigation system running at least twice a day, I live in transition zone as well. thank you in advance
Last year, I mentioned about blue grass and questioning if you’re going to have it watered?? Your response was ‘hey buddy, of course’. I live in SE Michigan and my water bill is outrageous during the summertime. But I do have a beautiful yard! Kentucky Blue Grass needs a lot of water
Rob Volpi , I am in SE MI as well with 100% KBG also. Ok soil over sand. Sprinklers run everyday almost since the ground doesn’t hold moisture. By my estimates I am using 11,000 gallons per day. The water bill sucks. Days over 80-85 it also gets a short cool down water in the afternoon. KBG is a water hog, if I do it again I am going to try TTTF after watching Pete for some time now.
Yes sir...you are correct...I am VERY fortunate to have a very strong well so the water bill does not affect me...again...very blessed to have this well
Hey Pete. Great video. I'm on the horns of a dilemma trying to decide whether to overseed my KBG lawn (new home, one year old sod) with more KBG or overseed with a blend of KBG and TTTF. I need to soften the compact clay first, but I would respect your opinion on which option would be best in the KC area. I like the spreading of the KBG and I'm not crazy about the clumping aspect of the TTTF. Any info would be helpful but I need to do something pretty soon. Thank you sir.
I thinking about this, but I'm in South Florida lol. I seeded a lawn that was bare dirt with rye. It looks great, but rye will die. I wonder if this would have a chance here. July till August it will be 80 min and 90 max. I have some shade, lot's of rain, and irrigation. I don't think this will work, especially bc I would have to seed it now. But I was checking seeded zoysias and they all have a medium green, nothing came even close to the dark green of the rye. Any suggestions?
hey pete long time fan, love the vids. id say the sweet spot for kbg is 5/8"-.75" nice comparison if you were to divide the kbg lot for two heights or even three
@@GCITurf .25 i think is just way too short and too close to the crown, but that would be something to talk about though lol. How about 0.25", 0.5, 0.75, 1". I also notice when i cut and maintain at 0.5 for a few weeks and then let it grow to 0.75 or even 1" and maintain it there that i end up with what seems to be an even greener thicker lawn.
Hey. So i have to seed in the spring beacuase lawn is thin in back yard and clovers took hold. I just bought a 45lbs bag of cgi blue heat i know fall is optimal time to over seed but i have to do it now. What can i do to maje sure it all goes good?
I love my bluegrass but I don’t understand why everyone is cutting it so short. I have mine at about 4” and love it. I would feel robbed of the experience you get when you walk on it barefoot.
Hey Pete I'm in zone 4a and looking to overseed this fall. I mainly have bluegrass I'm assuming with fescue. Front yard in sun all day and back mainly in sun with some shaded spots from trees. Any seed recommendations ? I'm new to this. I was told perennial rye in front, and a rye/fescue blend in back, but I have no idea! Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Pete, Had a question. Do you have any thoughts or knowledge on Titan RX/Titan Ultra/Titan Ltd turf type tall fescue? Seems like it produces rhizomes (self repairing like Kentucky Blue grass), but has a darker green color and a MUCH deeper root system. From the 2012-2016 NTEP results I reviewed, it seems to have good Sun and Shade tolerance, and excellent heat/drought/cold tolerance. Since I know you have your own GCI TTTF seed mainly with Falcon IV cultivars, I wanted to know why you dont also use Titan RX/Ultra/Ltd in your blend? Lastly, it seems there is also a grass seed blend called TLC Blend turf type tall fescue, with some big name Cultivars in it, such as Titan Rx, Titan Ultra, Titan Ltd, Hudson, Rendition Rx, Rendition, and Covenant II. I would be VERY interested if you could to a "Test Plot: of either the Titan RX/Ultra or of the T.L.C. Blend? Your Kentucky Blue Grass looks amazing, but man is it needy (with watering, fertilizer, Ph, brown patch, and bi-annual de-thatching). Just seems like a heat-tolerance TTTF would do better! Let me know your thoughts! (Also, I plan to plant Titan Rx and T.L.C. Blend grass seed in my backyard this year). I would love to do a collab with you and share the results for the benefit of everyone interested in TTTF grasses. (FYI I live in SW Ohio - Transition Zone. Most lawns are Kentucky Blue Grass but I'm thinking TTTF might be the winner here!)
I follow your channel now and going out about y’all through Cole the Cornstar. I need to order some of this amazing seed! I live in N.C. How can I get in touch to order some seed??

tall fescue has a longer leaf 4 1/2", causing the water to set on leaves longer causing fungus and disease.

I like the spreading of the KBG and I'm not crazy about the clumping aspect of the TTTF. Any info would be helpful but I need to do something pretty soon. Thank you sir.
look how blue the sky is, without all the airline exhaust, automobile exhaust.
Been waiting on the blueheat. Im surprised the coolblue no longer contains midnight.
Pete, since you have put out these videos do you get requests from your customers to have a lawn as you have?
For Zone 6b would you recommend Blue Heat or Cool Blue seed?
I recommend Blue Heat,
Oooo that looks so good!
I love your vids
What grass type would you recommend in Wisconsin?
Looks great!!
Amazing...I filmed this 4-5 days ago and the Hyr Brix app has made the Blue Heat 2 shades darker already...LOL
Buddy that fescue is unreal. It looks good at that height. If you cut that down some would it still hold that dark green?
I don’t see any reason it wouldn’t 😎
What type of bluegrass would work well in conjunction to bermuda, in a shaded area that only gets about 3 hours of sun?
hey pete long time fan, love the vids. id say the sweet spot for kbg is 5/8"-.75" nice comparison if you were to divide the kbg lot for two heights or even three
Now this is a good idea! I might just do this! .25, .5, 1, and 1.5" ....what you think?
@@GCITurf .25 i think is just way too short and too close to the crown, but that would be something to talk about though lol. How about 0.25", 0.5, 0.75, 1". I also notice when i cut and maintain at 0.5 for a few weeks and then let it grow to 0.75 or even 1" and maintain it there that i end up with what seems to be an even greener thicker lawn.
@@GCITurf Connor mowed at 3/8 on a dare, didn't go terrible, but didn't go well either lol
Any update on the guy in Louisiana growing blue heat? I want to over-seed a small area of Bermuda and want to see how this will work
Good to use for over seeding in the fall?
What bluegrass do you reccomend to overseed with a lawn tbat is Scott’s bag kbg mix and per Rey ?
Richard Christian oh man! I had it at 3.5 a couple months ago! Sooooooo soft!!!!
It's because you can! If mowing your lawn was sex, mowing low with a freshly sharpened reel mower is the orgasm. KBG gives you the opportunity.
3-3.5 inches and love it. Sometimes 4+ and it is green and soft. Love it. Also have TTTF and is great too!
I like walking on it short better. Its like carpet that way.
For your next renovation just use a sod cutter and sell it. Lol. GCI turf sod! Limited addition.
I wonder how kgb would do during an Alabama winter...
Think I'm going to pull the trigger and mix this into my tttf only backyard. Need some self repairing due to kids.
Will the blue heat handle Chicago and NW Indian weather ?
Ohhhhh I like it!
You DA man
Hey GCI - I don't know what species of grass I have in my current lawn. Do you recommend tearing everything up before over seeding with Fescue?
My yard has a bunch of poa compressa. I wish I could get my whole yard to be poa compressa
Pete,
Had a question.
I live right on the line of zone 7a and 7b in east Alabama. Is this a good grass option? Don't see anything online about preferable zones
Update: This summer has been TERRIBLE! Too much heat and humidity. Houston, your weather is up here in North Carolina. Please come and take it home!
I follow your channel now and going out about y’all through Cole the Cornstar. I need to order some of this amazing seed! I live in N.C. How can I get in touch to order some seed??
I wonder how this will do in Greenville Sc? 💁🏿♂️ just wondering
when will 50lb bag of cool blue mix be available?
Heck yeah buddy. I'll take some!
I want a house with a lot like yours.
I live in Michigan. It does get pretty darned hot in July/August. Could I get the Blue Heat?
Number 6💪🏾😂 NC holding it down
