- Different Mowing Heights For Different Grasses
Different grasses perform different at different mowing heights. Some prefer taller heights of mowing and some can tolerate shorter heights of mowing. I feel it all depends on how much you are willing to put into your lawn as to how high or low you mow.

“It’s as thick as the hair on a dog’s back.” 😂 Your level of detail supports my geeking out on my lawn. 🤓 Thanks, Pete!
We gotta get that thing shining like a new penny 😂 -Pete D.
My St Augustine seems to love the higher I go I started at 3.5” this season and now I’m at 4.25 to 4.5” and it looked the best it ever has
I would love to reel mow one day. I start the season at 1" raise the deck 1/2" increments once I start seeing turf burn from the rotary blades. Toward the end of season I try to let it get tall so it will have better protection from freezing temps. I had a guy waiting for me to get home last Friday, he wanted to know who took care of my fertilization and herbicide treatments. He then wanted to hire me. Best compliment I got that day! Pete, you are a big part of my success in the yard. Thank you sir! 🇺🇸💪

Pete,
I appreciate that you’re willing to fight the Internet and lawn company norm that KBG cannot survive in the transition zone. KBG really gives a much more beautiful lawn than people give it credit for with how fine that blades are versus TTTF.
There’s certainly too much emphasis these days in that during the summer you must mow at insanely high heights of cut, but they are just leading themselves to more disease pressure.
Pete, used your TTTF for two overseeding projects so far. Having great results. Been mowing this summer between 3.5-4" and the lawn has withstood some killer heat waves and an unseasonable amount of rain (2nd rainiest July on record, close to 10"). It performs far better than the old KBG that was planted long ago. Will continue to use your product for my overseeding projects!
Turf type tall fescue here. Greatly appreciate all the knowledge that you share. You are definitely helping me get my Virginia lawn in proper shape.
I love your channel and your seed. Glad to see the man behind the great seed.
Pete, this is one of your best talks.
For people in the comments
Keep your st. Augustine at 4inches
Stop mowing it to 2 inches. Your killing it
I cut my St Augustine at 2 and half in the spring but when the warmer weather hits 👍 4 inches is ideal . Texas heat is rough on the grass
Always the ultimate professional. Very thorough and honest. Much appreciated
Perfect timing for this video. I've got a 750sq ft section that is separated by concrete from the rest and I just started killing off the fescue to level it well, and plant the 5lbs of kbg I just got from you! I'm in central kansas so can't wait to see what happens!
I’m a landscaper and I love the videos! Keep up the good
Pete is definitely "The Sod Father". No doubt about it!
Very informative video Pete. I’ve been following your videos on the KBG, and I think I’m convinced that I want to over seed with Bluegrass only this year. I’m hoping over time my turf becomes more Bluegrass than fescue, and allows me to mow a little shorter.
I just ordered your Cool Blue Tall Turf Type. Cannot wait to share what my yard looks like now vs what your product(s) so to it with you video help!! Love your content and I’m I straight soil to plant no over seeding.
I love my Bluegrass I can't wait to see your renovation Pete!!!!
GREAT VIDEO! I always heard that for kbg, cutting it low will make it more dense (lateral spread), but haven't had much success with that on my midnight/award mix. Maybe the stress when cut short is counter productive to some extent.
Excellent video! Great information Pete, thanks so much.
Looks awesome Pete and I have a mix of grass in my yard so I cut my grass at 3”
I keep my backyard at 1in- 1.5 and its literally a mix of every cool season known to exist. Bent, TF, Rye, Kbg, fine fescue, creeping fescue, everything all the above. Most of it was existing i've only seeded a few spots that have died over the years with just the cheap big box store blend, bc I don't care about it unlike my front yard. The tall fescue handles the 1 in cut but it doesnt like it but the other grasses have blended into it and its not noticeable and in some cases especially where there's bent it has taken over and smothers it. The bent likes the 1in cut the most as it has really spread since i started keeping the back low the past few years
Thanks Pete very informative video on cutting height ! 😎👍🏻
Undisputed King of Lawns. I’d pay to watch these. Such a great guy, kind of man you’d trust to walk your Grandmother home from the grocery store.
Love your videos, have followed for a couple of years now. Also in North Carolina. If you could , next time you do one like this, specify what type of Ryegrass. There's the annual ryegrass and perennial ryegrass. Annual is what I use to overseed my bermuda fall through spring, it does not tolerate low mowing at all. It's like fescue as far as height. Perennial ryegrass is different and likes low mowing in cooler weather obviously lol. I made the mistake of trying to mow my annual ryegrass to low haha.
🌞Excellent video, Pete! Love seeing that Allett on the Bermuda out in front of your shop! 👍⛳
GCI Cool Blue TTTF/KBG arrives tomorrow. Thanks Pete!
Hi brother thanks again for your 6-0-0 the lawn looks great 👍 NYPD support 100%. Brother thanks
I had a Scag when I had my own house. I loved it. Really rugged.
Before you kill the tall fescue… can you cut it to less than 1 inch please please please? I wanna see how it looks for a big renovation Im doing and I would like to see how the tall fescue looks short
It will just turn brown.
I think that would be a interesting video.
It will look yellowish brown. It doesn't look good.
Great work Pete!
Up north in the Pacific North west if you plant rye grass or it spreads with our major droughts you can easily see it the first to go dormant. And if there is minimal recovery in fall and you start clean ups around trees the grass gets all torn out. Nothing beats a good thunder storm rain every 2 weeks to keep things alive. With out that you pissing in the wind.
You have some great looking grass your cutting.
Your information is key. Thank you.
Pete! Ya gotta scoop you a Ferris push mower now that your riding red wit your new z3x. The fw15 push mower is NO JOKE brother you’ll be a big fan dude check it out. I think it runs circles around the skag 30” my boys got
I appreciate your videos so much!
beautiful turf ! Turf therapy !
Our lawn got the awesome builder grade leveling job, so the Bermuda gets cut at 2 1/2” to get a nice smooth mow without scalping high spots. We will start leveling incrementally next year. With the amount of clay in our yard, we have been focusing on following a routine program of liquids and granular products to improve the health of the lawn. Having the best yard in the neighborhood is nice, at least that’s what all of the walkers say when they pass by. It’s fun to learn and try new things to see if they work.
Pelletized gypsum at Menards is your friend.
Thanks Pete
Pete, the new camera looks amazing! 👍🏼
Great video can’t wait for you to get some more rye grass in stock
THANKS BROTHER. HAVE A GREAT DAY
Good stuff thanks Pete.
Thanks made me feel confident in my midnight/everest kbg blend I'm about to throw down...way north in upstate NY
I just ordered a sample size of the Everest KBG from Seed Super Store. I’m going to grow it in a pot to see how it looks.
Pete the new camera is awesome!! Looks great man!
Rye grass sucks in the heat. I’m way up north, we are in a drought and extremely hot. My Rye checked out 2 months ago, KBG is doing decent. Gonna overseed with some cool blue 🤘🤘
Read my comment 100% true what I wrote CUT HIGH I took risk and spike shoe aeration overseeded in spring no chemicals
Same here, I’m here In Michigan. This heat is doing a number on my Rye. But if what he says is true, If I can cut TTTF at 2.5, I may be switching this fall.
@@lextalionis8992 glad it’s doing well. I cut 3.75 to 4, you may have a better variety than i do.
@@mtb7018 Its just crazy I bet next year I won’t be saying that cause that’s just how things work with grass lol
Great video Pete. After the "I wouldn't dare cut the tttf that short," it only intrigues me to see how the tttf would actually look (maintained) at at shorter height like 2.5". Emphasis on the (maintained), since a 1 time cut to 2.5" would undoubtedly look unsightly
in michigan, i cut my tttf at 2.5" in the spring/fall. Honestly it looks awesome! Raise it to 3 or 3.5 in the summer. If you have top performing tttf cultivars, they can do 2.5" all year!
@@Stegs Livonia here, what about you? I have TTTF and like you, it’s only under 3” for start/ end of season and overseeding. I’ve kept it at 4” this summer and Disease pressure has been somewhat moderate. Might try 3.625” next year.
You have some badass mowers.
St Augustine here. I leave the mower on the highest setting all season.
I live in so Southern California, my toro is on an ABC cutting height what should I be cutting?
@@SuperBobbilicious whatever the highest setting is!
@@SuperBobbilicious highest notch. St Augustine here in central valley CA
I’m a beginner dyi homeowner, well my aunts house and get complements all the time but I don’t mow my yard, the gardners do but I do other peoples crappy yard, my grass is on a slope so I’m hesitant…
Texas here. I do the same. Mine is 4 inches And it’s thick. My neighbor cuts it at 2 inches (I measured theirs) and it’s filled with clovers and it’s thin. You can see dirt
Thank you
Just bought a bag of cool blue for my Reno. Cannot wait
@Brandon Mitchell I would absolutely kill of the Bermuda.
8:04 Great day in the morning!!!!
Glowing like a new penny!
@@GCITurf YESSSS LORDDDD!!!!
Great information.
I have Kentucky Blue and I prefer it lower, but something you didn't touch on in the video, is if you want it cut low and your ground is not very level, some areas will get scalped. So I cut mine at 3 ¹/⁴ and it looks beautiful. It also kinda hides the uneveness.
Great video
Bluegrass blends at 3” looks great!
When it comes to St Augustine! As high as your mower can go! The higher the better!
Man I love this channel!
Fescue here in Iowa and I keep my setting on my lawn mower up high I think it's around 3/1/2 to 4 inches
Thanks for the info bro.. and your tall fescue is amazing looks damn good 🤙. I’m in south Oklahoma I have Bermuda/ tall fescue, I’m trying to get rid of the Bermuda but I’m scared 😕 man. But it will be gone soon guaranteed.
Looking forward to seeing how the kbg works out in your climate. TTTF lawn in 7b (OKC).
Got my bag of GCI KBG about 2 weeks ago (used Barenbrug in the past but its unavailable). Before dethatching, aerating and overseeding this year, how low would you cut? I also have some Anderson's Barricade Professional-Grade Granular Pre-Emergent weed control and PGF 16-0-08 with Humic. Kind of unsure how to overseed using all together. I also have a bag of Andersons PGF balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer with 2% iron. I use "Get Sunday" throughout the year to try and keep it healthy, but htinking baout discontinuing that subscription. Any feedback would be helpful.
I'm looking at getting some of your seed. I have KBG from a sod farm but looking at overseeding this fall. I was wondering what you would recommend I for seed I live in western Minnesota. Thanks Pete
Great video as usually. Side question: what is you opinion of the new scag 30in push mower you had in the video?
Good info
Thanks buddy! I need a Bermuda at the shop update when you get time.
There's a reason he isn't showing it...🤣
@@saynotolagoona true this. It looks very very very very very very very bad right now. When I get back home I plan to get it straightened out
Pete, I hope when you show it to us you tell the entire story, and how you fixed it. That’s my favorite type of video.
@@GCITurf I saw it when j stopped in the other day. I know I'll be amazed at the transformation you do on it. I wish I had as much talent as you do in your pinky finger.
Trying to overseed lawn should i slit seed my TTTF on my existing or should I core aerate it?
KBG here in Colorado, 2 inches here n looking good
Ok. You got me hooked. How do I get a yard like that in mississippi?
Do I need to roundup the whole yard?
Love my fescue, but it’s been a struggle this year between the heat and the fungus. Come on fall weather!!!
I was really struggling and was late with my fungicide. I threw down some Scott’s disease ex and 4 days later I started getting some new growth. 9 days later lane is looking back to normal and even better.
I keep mine at 3 inches. I live just outside of Chicago. :)
The best height for the zoysia in my yard is 2 1/4. Most of it is taller though because I have a mix of zoysia and fescue. Ultimately the zoysia will take over but I want the yard as a whole to look good.
My neighbor loves mowing dirt.
Pete, I have KBG, rye, fescue mix. I have been battling poa. Have you tried or used ETHOFUMESATE 4SC or Nortron® SC Herbicide?
You must be hammering the KBG with water to keep it looking like that in this heat. I live in the Northeast and have elite cultivars of KBG. Mine can't take the heat and that's with temps in the low to mid 80's. When it hits 90 like it has for the past few days, it wants to go dormant. I have irrigation and water at least 1.5 inches a week. I have it at 3.5" all summer. How much are you irrigating that?
I was thinking of changing over to TTTF but from everything I've seen and read, it doesn't handle fungus well. Most channels I've seen have severe brown patch issues each summer. I know KBG is also susceptable, but I don't believe it's as bad.
I live in Iowa and we've been getting hammered this year with very high temps of over 90 with no rain. We are in an extreme drought. I water 1.5"/week and my KBG has stayed pretty green. I increase the mowing height a little and hit it with high potash fert with some slow release N in mid June and again toward end of July. I know the common wisdom is to not feed cool season turf in the summer, but feeding it during this time has always served me well.
I water it really no more than fescue. But I do have it on a systematic lawn care program that really helps to minimize stress.
Great video, If you're over seeding in the fall for tall fescue, what height do you cut it so really get that seed to soil contact? Thanks
What frequency are you on to keep the KBG that low?
I have TTTF in my yard as well. It’s actually a sod I had a guy put in this past Sept. it’s very dark green and most is thriving.
I live in Northern California.
When I watched this video you posted I noticed toward the end when you put your hand down in your fescue there were some yellowish blades of grass. I noticed parts of my grass doing the same thing. Should I be alarmed ? Is it some kind of fungus? And can I spray any fungiside down now, being that the grass is only been down for three months?
I bought a sack of your TTTF to overseed my lawn , cause there are few small spots the sod didn’t take to well. But probably won’t till spring time.
Is it best to bag clippings on KBG when cutting at 1.5” or below?
How about mixes (blue, rye, tall fescue, creeping fescue) - what size for those? I've always subscribed to taller is better but the mixes tend to flop over at 3.5"+ and don't cut as clean.
I have the same problem. I can’t seem to fix it.
Are the areas that are flipped over in shady areas or potentially impacted by fungus? I have that issue but only where it doesn’t get adequate sunlight and/or some fungus problems
I usually just grab my pack back blower and blow the grass so it “stands” up before I mow. Currently have Perennial Rye, TTTF, Kentucky blue mix. Trying to train it to seek the sunlight. It is a weird occurrence indeed
4” is best 😎
Pete I know you're a fan of Wright Mowers...any chance you could do a review of a smaller 32 or 36 Stander B??
I love my stander b 32”
Mathew any issues with it?? Cut quality good? What kind of grass do you cut with it? I have kbg and rye mix.
@@erinpackard9768 After 150 hours of use the only issue is a squeaky front caster wheel. It has a small learning curve to turn without tearing grass because of how narrow the small wheels are plus the weight of the machine. You have to be very delicate. Otherwise I love it.
My KBG cannot tolerate the heat like my TTTF. I wouldn't smoke off your Fescue. I am in Missouri too. You will get more heat than we do in NC.
The kbg planted at my home looks phenomenal. Zero fungicides and is taking the heat extremely well. I also hate to see the tttf go but it’s already been sprayed. 🥳
Great video!!! I kinda like that Tall fescue and Kentucky blue I am gonna renovate my lawn not sure which one I should go with
Where do you live and do you have irrigation?
@@GCITurf Pittsburgh and yes I do my yard is 3000 square feet. I was gonna scalp it, then spray some glyphosate, then level with new top soil then seed end of august
@@TheLawnFellas spray then scalp. You should be able to have either of you can water consistently
@@GCITurf ok thank you I really appreciate it. I will definitely spray first thanks for the tip.
How’s it going Brother Pete. I think you just convinced me to go on with my original plan to seed Your KBG in my front yard. Just 2 questions. How hot does it get over there.?And how many days continuously is it over 90? Your Summers. God Bless You 🙏🏽
I don’t live far from Pete. Our summers vary from year to year, but I would say its not unusual to see a couple of weeks straight in July and August with days in the low to mid-nineties. You may see longer stretches without rain or a cooling front, and you will most likely get multiple over ninety stretches in a typical summer.
@@mburke1211 Thank you 🙏🏽. I live here In Fresno California and our whole month of July has been in the 100’s. We’ll get a break I’d say one day out of the week where it will be 93 to 97 but that’s what we’re going through right now. 🥵 Dry Heat !
Whoa whoa whoa, you’re telling me TTTF can be cut at 2 1/2 Pete?! I was looking at seeds and noticed your website says 3.5. Which has always prevented me from going TTTF.
If you have irrigation. I would recommend the use of a stress blend during the summer. Otherwise, it'll smoke itself out.
I cut at 3.5" with TTTF 2-3 times a week, but when we hit the heat of the summer like now, it gets a 5-0-20 fert, cut at 4" (my Honda seems to be higher at full tall) and usually just a single pass and get off of it...sometimes doesn't get mowed for 7-10 days. Between vacations and camping trips, I fell behind on watering and just letting it go dormant if it wants. If it was at 2.5", it probably be thinning out. Instead, it's a shaggy 5-6" for days...
No. I said it all depends on the growing conditions as to how high or how low you could potentially cut TTTF at.
Still say u should play with some fine fescue Pete. It would really round out your grass seed offering
Anyone rocking centipede? Was really hoping to get some insights. I’m located in the transition zone of S.C. I’m currently feel mowing (non-motorized) at roughly 1.5 inches. Can’t go lower as the lawn isn’t level enough.
Using a Toro greenmaster reel. Cutting at half inch on Bermuda.
I bought a house yard neglected I killed what grass was left cause I had a newborn at the time cut the grass at 1 this year I overseeded my sun exposed front yard used spike shoe aerator had some doubts but that Perennial rye is holding up very well at 4 inches and Surprisingly I don’t have irrigation I water the grass if Mother Nature can’t help and honestly it’s one of the better yards on the block here in NY also do not have tree shade as the sun is 100% all day on my front yard CUT HIGH if you can’t maintain with watering. No soil test no pre-emergent no per post Emergent no chemicals all I did was weed and feed for Clovers
Can you autograph some of that grass and send it out. I’m jealous.
Do you think KBG would mix well with tall fescue??
I live in Nevada. Real hot summers, I have Bermuda that I planted this year. I want a shorter feel, but a lush look. What’s a happy medium between short with that lush and dense look?
For Bermuda 1” seems to be a nice HOC
Pete, how often do you think you’d have to mow a non-irrigated Bermuda turf in northern virginia if you kept it tall 2.5-3.5 inches?
Very hard question to answer. All depends on how you feed it and how much rain you get.
Fine fescue might be worse than rye when it comes to heat
My fine fescue that’s in the shade has been somewhat blah.
where can i get your bluegrass in canada?
Sound like the dude that says
“Open the door… ooooopen the door!…”
Would love to see a video on blade setup. I read some people run 2 high lifts and a mulching blade some run the x configuration. What's your thoughts?
The factory blades work great. That’s what I use
Also the longer your grass blade is the longer your grass roots are going to be which makes it more healthier
Fescue rocks...but bluegrass rules. 👍
What brand is that orange push mower
So how's the scag doing for you? Pros and cons
It’s a pretty good mower. I’ll have to do a follow up video
When is blue heat back in stock, getting close to fall seeding time,
Should be any day now
I have my KBG at 1.5 inches, and it looks amazing. I used to cut it at 3 inches, but it never looked as good as the 1.5 inch.
