If you know how to tune a maple set in it's entirety, these are "hands down" the absolute BEST shell pack you can buy.. Money aside, a very simple moon gel addition on the 12:00 o'clock position of top of the" Very Reliable Stock 2ply Heads" will give you a raw sound, with No Mic's attached, like you've never, ever heard before!!! Don't buy into new heads, you Do Not Need Them! Just a simple twerk of the lugs "top a little tighter than the bottom" will get you what you want...a simple $5 pillow in the bass drum and your sounding like a PRO! Take some time, use these " very cheap methods" and I promise you'll get the sound that's right for you...
I bought this set in the Mahogany Burst 5 years ago in October of 2017 for my son. He was 9 years old at the time and just starting out on the drums. I think I paid just under $2,000 for the whole set with tax after I bought a thrown and few extra's like a cow bell and cymbals. He has since upgraded a few other things on it like double DW pedals on his bass drum, new heads of course, more cymbals, and a new DW hi-hat stand. He loves the set. It has served him well over the past five years. It sounds very nice. I love listening to him play on them. I'm so glad I bought him this set.
The Ludwig Evolution maple may be just about the best bang-for-the-buck drum set on the market right now. These shells are 100% North American maple, as opposed to the cheap Asian maple that Tama, Pearl, and Gretsch are using in their mid-line maple kits. There is no comparison as far as shell quality goes. Usually, North American maple is reserved for high-end kits that cost MUCH more than the $1000 price tag of this kit. I'm not sure how Ludwig can sell this kit so inexpensively, but it is definitely a winner. I would like more finish options, but looks definitely come secondary to sound and build quality. IMO, the Evolution maple is head and shoulders above anything else in this price range. Ludwig knocked it out of the park with this one.
No doubt about it. With the stock pinstripes, PS3's on the snare and kick, this thing puts anything in it's price class to shame. A 10x13 is also available.
I just bought these as well. I got the Trans Blue. I wish it was included as well. But I had several gift cards to cut my out of pocket expense by 55%. So I went on eBay and bought the 8x7 tom brand new! Everything arrived this past Saturday. Stunning set!!
It’s because they want you to spend more money to get the extra Tom it’s all marketing it shouldn’t be that way but unfortunately that’s what time we’re living in get the Tama superstar classic 7 piece you’ll be happy you did
I bought this kit in the blue finish yesterday on Reverb. It did come with the free tom and a complete set of Zildjian ZBT cymbals. The total price including shipping and taxes was $945.
I bought this exact set from Reverb and got the free tom tom. This set is more bang for the buck than I ever expected. It may still be available, but you have to really search for it. The Zildjian ZBT cymbals were entry level, so I upgraded them to the Zildjian S cymbals. Great sounding set!
I’m thinking of buying this kit as well? I’m a first time buyer how much should I expect to pay for all of the hardware that would go with this kit including symbols? Really appreciate your reply
@@patrickwhelan3079 I paid $945 for the complete kit, hardware and cymbals. But Ludwig has discontinued this line of drums so you will have to move FAST to buy whatver sets are still available in the stores. They sound incredible.
I like the mic'd version of the video, you can hear indvidual drums. plus, you dont obviously watch the entire presentation when he plays the kit WITHOUT the music. You're ignorant. These aren't mixed with EQ :-p
Jose Vera Trying being the key word. Tama is the most consistent company of all the brands, they are really smart about what they produce and how they price it at all levels. I just dont like PDP or DW at all, so overrated and priced. Ludwigs are definitely older sounding, fatter and good for classic rock, but not a fan of the hardware or design. But them Sabians, so nice. As usual :p
I'm debating whether to get the Tama Superstar, Ludwig Evolution, or the Gretsch Catalina.. Any suggestions? (My style is classic rock and hard rock) I have a Pearl Session Studio classic, but I'm selling it cause I don't like it that much tbh.
Slicin' N' Dicin' you can't go wrong with the Tama Superstar classic Satin tamo Ash kit they just released, the 7pc kit cost $900 and they might have it in less pieces for cheaper and it has a beautiful look too, Sweetwater has a video on it. good luck with your next kit 👍
Can the rack toms also be mounted on a accessory tom stand? I prefer that method over the rod that goes into the top of the bass drum. Thank you. Great product reviews!
As much as I don't want to spend the money he talked me into buying the mapex saturn v and now I'm gonna have to save for those beautiful sounding mics
I would guess the Emperors would sound almost as fat, but slightly more articulate than the Pinstripes the drums come with; and a bit fatter and rounder than the UV1s Nick used here. Of the three options we are discussing, I think I’d prefer clear Emperors on these toms. Evans GPlus is a great option for the in-between range too. It’s one thick ply, and it sings beautifully at low and medium tunings, without the dullness that comes with the Pinstripe’s fatness.
I'm thinking of going back to ludwig. Anyone have an opinion if it's worth the money specifically sound wise to go with the ludwig classic maple or this kit. Hard to tell the difference by these videos. Thanks.
Sound wise.....no. What you get with Classic Maple is made in USA. If that means anything to you, then pay the extra. Drums are drums....it's not like the machines/molds used in China are out of round, or they use some cheap ass glue. Plywood drums especially are pretty much all made the same way. The wood used on these is even North American maple, which is supposed to be the best. The difference comes in labor costs, hardware costs, and some may say quality control. But to me, if a company cares about its products, their quality control should be the same no matter where they're built. The quality from Chinese made drums that I've seen (and own) is just as good as any other. These were the best deal going by far when they were being liquidated directly by Ludwig on Reverb.
You know your getting old when you start using words like " new fangled ". Im just busting your chops. It's just that I said that word a couple of days ago and my wife says " how old are you babe, 75 " im 42. Love ya brother!

Yes! Depth × Diameter... I spent my entire life with depth × diameter, ordering drums from the companies, and when helping customers. Then Pearl came out with diameter × depth in the 2000's and messed it all up..
sounds to much better than a lot of drum kit too much xpensive you review, the blue is really beautifull, sad the bass drum only have 8 division like the snare, if not i buy it...
They sound identical but the Ludwig snare sounds better to me. I wanted to save some money with the Ludwig not buying a seperate snare but they got discontinued (in Europe at least i can't find any)
Why demo an "upgraded set"? You say it sounds good right out of the box? Then that's what we should be hearing. That's what we are buying. Right? We don't all want the heads and setup that you like. And it could be a while before we get the chance to change things if we even do. Less production and more emphasis on the product, please? You can always do an upgrade tag to the video if you want to be more complete. Great drumming though.
Snare is included...from the sweetwater website - "Sizes (depth x diameter): 8x10" and 9x12" toms, 14x14" and 16x16" floor toms, 18x22" kick drum, 6.5x14" snare"

That’s why the boss pays him.
I agree 100%. He makes the 1,000$ kits sound just about as good as the 3-5,000$ that it’s hard to justify buying a “ high end “ kit lol

Great sounding drum kit.I still have my accent power tone from the 2000’s for fourteen years and still looks like new
I love that opening instrumental.
Aw hell yeah. All that is needed for reviews is this dude's videos.
amazing sound Nick.

Literally the God of tuning drums
They sound great!
I’ve got a 7 piece tama set that I love because it’s maple these are the best sounding drums the maple in drums effortlessly sounds great .

Shame they discontinued these.
Hey Nick how would Evans hydraulic sound on this drum set
Great sound...nice hair!
Music that started in the video, where i can found it please...?
Nick, who creates the tracks you play along to?
is ludwig better than pearl?
and are these a good buy for a long time?
Yes sir 100% guaranteed it will last forever, my ludwig classic is 17 years old now
it depends on Hardware, Ludwig Hardware its good, but idk about pearl, if u looking drum, make sure drum hardware is good too.
Sounds good....but too studio. I would be curious if these drums sound anywhere near the Classic Ludwig sound...
There's no EQ on the drums.. wtf are you talkin about?
Lindos dimais,eu amo bateria
Wait will I get 7 if I get it from anywhere like let’s say amazon, or will I only get 7 if I buy from sweetwater?
I just bought this kit from Sweetwater and I didn't get the seventh piece. definitely impressed with the kit though and happy for $800
It wasn't advertised with a 7th piece though just thought I'd add that
this sounds exactly like one of the kits in Logic X’s sound library
Imagine how good it would sound with some new Remos
Larry, they come with upgraded Remos, Nick has a thing for Evans. You can also get a 10x13 rack tom.
Scott Elkin I would rather have a 10, 12, 13 rack Tom and the 16 floor. Only reason I wouldn't get this Ludwig kit.
How much ...... ?
Nice. Lol. I had to do that on my mapex snare too
i know these are 7 ply but anybody know the thickness
