      Qualcomm is entering the pc market, not at the best time. (Ignoring previous releases). If they entered PC market in 2019 or 2020, it would have been a different story. Now for Apple there is M series chips and intel has already come out of their 10nm debacle. The core ultra series seems quite impressive and the next core ultra (lunar lake and arrow Lake) are around the corner. There is very little that we can gain by going to Qualcomm now. Secondly, for Qualcomm, it's going to be a real struggle now with application compatibility. Nobody buys a laptop for the benchmark scores.

      Apple has a much better eco-system to rope in developers. If there isn't a protocol in hardware/software to get good x86 performance on non native ARM apps it will be junk. All of which Apple had at launch. Microsoft launched the original surface on ARM more than a decade ago and even had ARM variants of windows. Yet despite more than a decade of developing on ARM and having first adopters advantage they're still far behind the curve in software. I trust Qualcomm a lot more with hardware than I trust windows to get their software optimized for ARM near term.

Apple could make the switch be ause they didn't power anything but apps on the laptop and word.... Easy to change the game when you're basically not in it as a real player. M chip is not available for Windows so the real interest is the comparison in term of power and consumption between an Intel 14th gen and the ARM version. That is what consumer wants to know. In term of comparing with Apple, first, Apple has no hybrid like a Surface. And speaking only of laptop then, the question will be to see what offers a 1700$ Samsung Galaxy Book Edge 4 with this Snapdragon compared to a 512go, 16Go of RAM 1700$ 14" Apple Mac. What chip do you have in a Mac Pro for this price? M3 Ultra?

    • @JohnSmith-pn2vl

    I did not see performance per watt or efficiency. The lack of data suggests something may be less exciting . Of course, by having 12 performance cores, 50% more than the M3 chip it would be a shocker if the multicore score was not better! I do not think Apple is worried about this. Maybe Intel, but they have been worried for years due to their poor record of upgrades over the last 5-7 years. Then we have to understand these tests are done in perfect condition on reference devices with fans and large casing probably with max RAM and the fastest SSD. When we test with Macs with the same configs when in a retail unit running on Windows in real world tests maybe with non-ARM software, then the reality may not be as rosy.

    • @shitvideoquality4856
      @shitvideoquality4856 Місяць тому +12

      Exactly, that’s what I’m most curious about. In the cinebench multi core test what matter the most in this situations is not how many score you can get out of it, because anyone can just clock up or put more cores in. Rather it’s more about performance per watt

    • @jeanbaptistelabelle
      @jeanbaptistelabelle Місяць тому +15

      That is why the real comparison will be against Intel 14th gen. Last year, a Surface Pro 9 in ARM flavor was like less than half the performance of the Intel version.
      If this year, the ARM version is at the level of the new Intel chip (quite more powerful that last year), this is a giant LEAP and if the ARM chip has a significant advantage in term of consumption, we may be for an "M chip moment" on Windows side. Very interesting.
      And yes, I do think both Intel and Apple are worried. Apple gained suddenly market share because of the M chip. If Windows machines can offer the same level of autonomy (performance was never an issue but rather performance per watts and therefore cooling/form factor...) than Mac, then, Mac sales will become again a tough sell for most.

    I think a bigger question would be apps: Mac is sufficiently popular, especially amongst power users, to where it can force companies to make an ARM native solution. Uncertain if Windows has that leverage as it is a question of how many will buy computers with the X Elite, and is it worth their time. I assume if it compiles for the M line of chips it doesn't necessarily mean it will just be a plug and play for X Elite.

      Windows is far more popular on the desktop than Mac, and with Microsoft backing ARM, we've already seen all the big software packages provide ARM versions. I believe all the game devs are going to be providing ARM versions soon, particularly indies like me.
      Most internally developed business apps in the last decade are .Net or Java based, which are processor agnostic, so those aren't much of an issue. The biiig lagger here is going to be companies who make security and management software to sell to other business, and big corporations, who move super slowly. But consumers are not going to be a problem IMO.

It looks like a decent chip but there's plenty of work to do. They'll need to execute flawlessly to ensure it's relevant on the market. Ultimately this first chip will lose money, you'd think. The instruction set balloons and gets less efficient if you scale it to high performance compute no matter if Arm, X86 or any other even like RISC-V.
      Latest arch from AMD can scale from low power mobile up to 400W+ server.
      The real efficiency savings come from accelerators like NPUs, hardware codecs, vector instructions and GPU compute.

      What "performance" do you mean? Normalized to what?
      As i said, real world performance of Apples (and most other vendors today) chips is NOT achieved through some mystical non existent advantage of Arm vs X86.
      But by custom ASICs for codecs, vector math/NPU/GPU compute.
      And this is exactly where the gap has closed in 2024.
      NOT by CPU compute on Arm cores.
      Not that hard to understand.
      On top, while Apples lead CPU designers have left to Nuvia and now Qualcomm, leaving Apples IPC improvements lackluster since M1, AMD has consistently delivered higher IPC increases, while also enabling 512 Vector and NPU compute.
      Arm only locked like a better ISA because Intels lack of innovation and AMD was no competition due to lack of cash until a few years ago.
      The only benefit Arm brings is a license that is a bit more open than X86, and thus enabling new players to compete.
      But with Moores Law being dead in a traditional sense, its accelerators and accelerators ONLY where performance innovation can still happen.
      The ISA is basically irrelevant outside of licensing.
      With enough R&D and software support one could make a competitive RISC-V laptop class chip in 5 years.

    While a Snapdragon X Elite may do some benchmarks well, it runs Windows 11 ARM but most applications and games and Intel coded so while Windows 11 ARM can run 64-bit Intel code, the majority of the software out there, how does that run? And put the chip in a real laptop, how is the throttling? You have to come back to the real world when you test this option.

    This is a game changer, but it drains a lot of battery on the intels. I'm interested in the Mac M2-3, but it's expensive, and since we use Windows at work and there are more games available on Windows than Mac, I'm considering waiting for the Ultra 185 instead. It might be better for video encoding, so I'll wait to get that one for sure.

    This processor together with a dedicated graphics card will be incredible

    While arm chips are really cool, what I'm most excited about is handheld PCs (e.g steam deck) getting ARM processors.
    I'm a bit weird and willing to tolerate the crappier battery life laptops have to offer, but having killer battery life on handheld PCs would be great for gaming on flights without needing to charge or whatever

    I really hope that when they start to mass produce it they will offer mini pc-s also like mac mini or even passive cooled mini pc-s not just laptops.
    Exciting future with ARM technology. I like apple's technology but I really don't like that the SSD is not replaceable manually.
