Alex Rudinger - Whitechapel - "The Void"

- I'll be continuing to fill-in for Whitechapel on their upcoming European dates (flying across the ocean tomorrow, actually!). While I was home between these two tours, I recorded a few new videos playing some of their stuff. Here's the first one - "The Void", off of their album 'Mark Of The Blade'.
This is one of my favorites to play live. It's got some really cool drum parts, & is "tech" without being TOO difficult. There's also a pretty rad tempo change towards the end with a drum fill right in the middle of it (love that kinda thing!).
You may notice that I'm using ProMark sticks, & that the Vic Firth logo is gone from my intro. I've officially left Vic Firth - I have something new in the works that I can't tell you all about quite yet (but am very excited about!). In the interim, I've been using ProMark sticks (just to try something new, honestly). Plus, I thought it was more professional to be honest with a company that has treated me so well over the years (Vic Firth), instead of waiting until this other thing is ready, & then telling them last minute / very abruptly that I won't be working with them anymore (which to me just seems sketchy & rude). I have nothing but good things to say about Vic Firth, & my departure is truly nothing personal. They treated me well for many years, & they know how much I appreciate them.
Since they're aware of the change though, & I'm technically without an official stick endorsement at the moment, I've been using this in-between period as an opportunity to just try a bunch of different stuff out. So, while I am not "officially" endorsing ProMark, I've been using them for awhile now, & I must say: I'm VERY impressed with them. I've been using the standard 2B (with wood tip), & they absolutely rule. The quality & consistency is top notch (seriously, it's actually crazy how consistent they are). So that's what I'm using for now, & regarding the other thing... well, you'll just have to wait & see ;) !
Mixing was done by Adam "Nolly" Getgood. As always, Nolly handling the mix was an absolute pleasure. He's always able to get the most out of the drums I track at home. If you're interested in mixing, engineering, or general audio work, please contact Nolly using the email address below!

Drums are all natural except for the kick, which is a natural/sample blend. Altho... it's mostly sample (I think - didn't actually ask Nolly what percentage he blended). I didn't personally love how the natural kick turned out, & a trigger is generally more suited for this kind of music anyway. So I assume the natural blend is pretty low.
& you may ALSO notice the internally mic'ed toms (visible from the overhead angle). These mounts (which are custom made, actually) & mic's belong to Brandon Cagle - Whitechapel's Front of House engineer. Brandon put them inside my shells before the first tour I did with them, & since I was coming back down a few weeks later to rehearse again before Europe, he let me take them home temporarily. The foam inside is to defuse the internal sound waves a bit (so it doesn't get as much of a "beach ball" effect... it actually REALLY works wonders). I'm always stoked to try something new, & it turned out pretty rad. I felt that there was a bit less attack, but far more cymbal rejection (which is great). I'm not sure if it's something I'd always do when recording, but it's great for live performance. Was definitely fun to try in this environment though, & has some cool benefits. Big love to Cagle for being a sick guy & doing SICK stuff.

As always, thanks for watching & stay tuned for more!
Definitely one of the best cuts from "Mark of the Blade" and you knocked it out of the park!
Alex needs a home band like this to pick him up.
Something to show off his phenomenal talent.
This guy is a beastly drum player. Hope nothing but the best for you Alex.
It'd be so awesome if Ordinance was able to pull together and tour somehow. The Ides of March is such a killer fucking album and showcases a ton of talent from everyone, but especially that boi RUDI!
@@MattJFilms dumbest comment on here. Whitechapel isn't bad but Alex is far to talented for these dudes. He may stick out more for doing some awesome shit to there boring music but that's it.
comment was actually toward you lol
@@brandonmadden199 then let's see. He's tracking drums on their current record. Have your wish my man.
Words can not describe how badly i want you as a member of Whitechapel. I can't even imagine how insane new music would be.
Agree 🤘🏼
I mean.. They're currently recording their next album, with Alex behind the kit.
Gonna give up drums and take up gardening after watching this.
Bro for real xDDD
Haha comment was gold
You can do both!!!
Just don't look up epic gardening videos and you'll be alright
Every person that got to play with this magnificent musician is incredibly fortunate for sure! What a great fucking drummer!!
So fucking clean as always.
And the kit sounds incredible.
And that snare is one of the best ive heard.
So much room sound on it. Can’t get enough!!
Can we take a moment to appreciate the production/mix of the drums in this video. Amazing
When I'm out of practice for months, I watch Alex's video and follow until I'm perfectly matched.
This man is The Bar.
It's a real pleasure watching you play. W.O.W 👏🤘.
I didn't know you were filling in for Whitechapel, it was a pleasant surprise when I recognized you at Graspop! You guys really killed it, it was awesome!
You're a machine. I saw you a feeew years back when you toured with Conquering Dystopia. Had to be some of the best live drumming I've ever seen. And I've seen many.
Stay amazing, sir 👌
Ben was/is an absolute beast on the kit.. so many creative moments.. great job Alex!
Whos Ben? Navene tracked this album
@@lastditch727 wrong. Navene tracked The Valley but this song is from Mark Of The Blade which the former drummer Ben Harclerode was playing on. Ben was great, was sad to see him go but hope Alex stays permanently!
@@harrygaylordrums i am indeed mistaken, i guess i assumed this was a new one
Alotta commenters saying they want to quit. Ha, he's an amazing drummer of course but it should encourage you to become better not discourage.
True. And besides, he is that good not only because of his talent but also because DRUMMING IS ALL GUYS LIKE HIM DO...ALL THE TIME! Lol. I think a lot of people forget that point. If we all did this as a full time carrier and just worked non-stop...like MJK worked non-stop, hell we'd all be chop masters lmao!
It's a joke. I say it all the time
It's called a joke you stuffy bastards. None of them are seriously going to quit. Sheesh.
Yeah, I never understood that and it isn't funny either.
You know most of those comments are meant to be funny and the people who make them probably get annoyed when people take the joke too seriously... I know I do. 😐
Funckiing incredible! My god!!! This might be my favourite performance from your channel dude!
That song is gnarly and Alex plays is so we'll.
That's a whole workout right there.... BEAST!
I never stop to watch it! The very hard parts are on the beggining and chorus! By myself I want perfomance this song live! With my bass
Love this snare sound
Oh my godddddd those internal mics!!! I don't understand why more people don't embrace them or make an effort to either build or buy mounts for them. I handbuilt a mount to put my 91a in my floor tom a while back and it was the most amazing thing I'd ever heard. I swear, there wasn't even a smidge of cymbal bleed.
Absolutely amazing - possibly the best video of yours I've seen. Incredible work - great sound as well.👍
Incredible performance as always Alex!
Such a killer mix on this one! And dude you never cease to amaze us with your performance. Killing it!
That kit sounds soooo incredible!!!🤤🤤
So many great awesome bad ass drummers out there, but Rudi is definitely in my top 5. I'm 46 and seen and met alot of awesome musicians. Top 5 Rudi!
Just can't get over how good your drums sound! Killing it like always
The quality of everything in videos of Alex, image, techniques, and sound.... are INSANE! Congrats from Brasil!
What the f*** ... by far my favorite drummer. Hard hitter, awesome sound, so much focus in audio details (acoustic treatment of the set, mic placements, drum mix and process...), drum setup, technique...bla bla.
Alex you are huge inspiration!!!
These whitechapel covers really give whole new perspective to the songs the parts are so much cooler than I first think!
So awesome, I could watch on a loop all day.
Man alive, awesome job!! I love the sound of your snare!
Such a bright sounding kit! I love his style !
My face melted! Good job Alex!!!
You leave no void for me wanting to see inssaaaaaaane drumming 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Best UA-cam metal drummer? !

That overhead of the cymbal array is sickkk!
This gives me the most motivation to get behind the kit...your a beast alex!!!
Got to be one of your best videos yet. Awesome work sir, snare sounds killer. One of my favourite drummers, am trying to practice open hand playing like you. Keep up the great work.

Alex is amazing, basically he can do what he wants on the drums. I'm a super fan, it's my dream one day to be able to play like you. I feel very happy to see you play with Whitechapel.
That was just sickkkkk
The new new-guy! Loving it! 😍👌
This is like rehearsal footage, and you're knocking it the fuck out since Section 8!!!!!
You're so good it's gross. Every drum video you post is cleaner than the last, keep up the good work!
Spot on m8. Looks like you have made some upgrades to your kit. Love the set up.
Badass! As usual.
I have a tendency to watch these videos on repeat at like 2 AM and all it does is make me wanna go play my own drum kit and or jam out to whitechapel or anything equally heavy, but i cant even compare closely to how talented Rudi is, like for real man amazing job, i hope you stick with Whitechapel for their future records you killed the drum tracks on The Valley
I dont know what you mean with the fact that he killed the tracks on The Valley.. He didn't play them on the record. He's putting down the tracks for their upcoming album though.
Super cool Alex!👍🏻
My God that kit sounds nuts!
Damn, finally you look like you´re REALLY having fun!
I have now fallen in love with whitechapel
Rüdi is love, Rüdi is life
Whooo boy that's clean!
Incredible.
Pure motivation. U the best
🙌🙌 badass Drumming!
That fill at the 0:20 mark is by far the coolest fill I've heard you play - well for me anyways - and you've got a lot of them... given the smirk at the end of it - you enjoyed the hell out of it too!
Ben really out down some amazing fills for Whitechapel. The fills in Our Endless War are also just.. Amazing.
NOW, THIS IS MY CUP OF TEA! THANKS, BUDDY! 👏👌BY THE WAY, THE DOUBLE KICKS LOOK PHENOMENAL! 😍👌 I DON'T WANT TO BORE YOU ANYMORE WITH MY BLAH BLAH ABOUT YOUR PLAYING AND ALL! JUST KEEP BLASTIN, RUDI! 😎👍✌🤘😁
Incredibly tight man!
Amazing!!
That snare sounds awesome, like usual. \m/
I'm digging the new setup, with the rack and 2 kick drums !!!!!!!
Dude you´re a clockwork !!!! amazing O.O
Ay yes, the cyborg releases a new cover..... Always amazes me at the level of precision in your playing. Incredible. Love that little blast beat at 0:34 and 2:01 too.
A true master❤
damn one of my favorite drummers forsure
Damn dude..... those toms sound sick!! Sounds almost exactly like Ben’s kit live from the warped tour vids. Dooooooppppee!
was super dope meeting you at the show in New Orleans! You def rocked for Whitechapel's set.
Shawn Fee Thank you kindly my friend!
Brutal 👏
This dude can play anything.
this is sick!!
Damn! Tight👏👏
BAD ASS!! 🤘🏼
