I was born in 1956 and we had mesh bags of these coins every Christmas. Plus they used to make cardboard "books" that held assorted flavors of Lifesaver rolls.
I still buy bags of chocolate coins and lifesaver books for kids every year (I think no-name lifesavers). 😎

I imagine the chocolate left over when punching the coins is a sign of inefficiency. To solve that problem, the coins should be made hexagonal. Or tubes should be filled with chocolate, which would then cool and be ejected to be cut into coin-sized pieces.
