    I'm from Brazil.
    This airline, VoePass (which used to be Passaredo) is not an unknown airline.
    They've been operating for almost 30 years and this is the first in their history (counting the time they were Passaredo). It's a regional airline (if I'm not mistaken, it's the only regional airline that operates out of São Paulo airports). So yes, it's a serious airline.
    This is the first accident involving an ATR airplane in Brazil and the first commercial airplane accident in 17 years since the accident involving the A320 of TAM Flight 3054 (which is now LATAM, which even has codeshare with VoePass), an accident that happened on 07/17/2007.

    Some information about this terrible tragedy. Firstly, I want to say that all of us Brazilians are devastated. Such is the pain, as it had been years since a plane crash had happened in Brazil. Today is Father's Day Sunday here. 08/11/2024 On this flight, it is worth mentioning that 61 lives were lost. And that includes around 21 doctors who were traveling to São Paulo to give a lecture, people who spent their lives saving lives, lost it on this flight. In addition to a father, who was traveling with his 4-year-old daughter, to celebrate Father's Day with her, he had picked her up especially to spend today with her, and I can't imagine the pain of this mother who lost a daughter , and the father of her daughter. I can't imagine the father's despair in those last seconds. There was also a Venezuelan couple on this flight. They had adopted a dog here in Brazil called Luna, everyone had helped so that the dog Luna could board with the couple, as they had fallen in love with her. The dog was found near the couple. In addition to daughters, mothers, grandmothers, many family members, on this plane was someone's love, someone's life that was gone in seconds. I couldn't bear such pain. All we Brazilians want is respect and prayers, as we are a people of faith, a united people, and sensitive to each other's pain. I'm very proud of my country. When one goes off course, everyone feels

      Many ages ago, we lost an F4 pilot and radar men due to a flat spin. It was at low altitude, and just barely on radar. Made a hellva crater. And the crew, they didn't make it. And it was the squadron's best flying aircraft with the least amount of problems. As for the crew, the G-forces were so high, the accident investigators suspected the crew was instantly pinned to their seats and couldn't do anyhting.

Even with complete engine failure the expectation is that the plane would still have some amount of forward glide during decent, but that plane was just going straight down. There was also a Venezuelan child who was with a puppy, all of them were found charred (including the dog itself), all the passengers were found charred. This accident was very tragic and much heavier than you guys imagine and the families are devastated, there were many people whose dreams were interrupted and they lost their lives. The aircraft stalled for some reason and was in a nearly flat spin. With no aerodynamic lift, it literally became a brick. That type of thing is all but impossible for a pilot to
    recover from. The question is why it happened--all but unheard of with a trained and experienced flight crew, unless there was a critical mechanical issue of some sort.

    • @andredarin8966

      It's a "T-Tail", one that clearly entered a "deep stall", from which it is almost impossible to recover. I'm going to presume it was another example of an ill-advised turn at some point in the approach. Straigh-on, approach to landing stalls have become rare.

      It is possible to recover from such a situation, (counter the spin with the rudder, while turning the nose down until the plane goes into a dive - then once there's enought airflow over the wings again to produce lift, then it can pull out of the dive) but of course you need enough altitude to be able to perform that maneuver.... which it clearly didn't have anyway. From the crash investigation from american eagle flight 4184: The National Transportation Safety Board determines that the probable causes of this accident were the loss of control, attributed to a sudden and unexpected aileron hinge moment reversal that occurred after a ridge of ice accreted beyond the deice boots because: 1) ATR failed to completely disclose to operators, and incorporate in the ATR 72 airplane flight manual, flightcrew operating manual and flightcrew training programs, adequate information concerning previously known effects of freezing precipitation on the stability and control characteristics, autopilot and related operational procedures when the ATR 72 was operated in such conditions; 2) the French Directorate General for Civil Aviation's (DGAC's) inadequate oversight of the ATR 42 and 72, and its failure to take the necessary corrective action to ensure continued airworthiness in icing conditions; and 3) the DGAC's failure to provide the FAA with timely airworthiness information developed from previous ATR incidents and accidents in icing conditions, as specified under the Bilateral Airworthiness Agreement and Annex 8 of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

    Apparently, there were reports of heavy icing in the area.
    What you're looking at is a spin from a deep stall. The pilot almost even manages to recover from it, but the plane just stalls again.
    This is a symptom of heavy icing on the wings, since once its shape has been altered too much by ice, its stall characteristics change drastically.

      Yes they do, all the time. It's called a flat spin and results from not being able to recover from a stall at altitude. There was a SIGMET for severe icing over the entire area at the time, and ATR's handle terrible in icing conditions. Icing leads to stall leads to flat spin, rip.

    When someone says stall the average person thinks the engine has stopped . A stall is when a wing loses lift caused by too low speed or wings angle of attack . The wihg stalls stops producing lift resulting in a spin .

      So not being an aeronautical expert was there some sort of way to glide it on the descent instead of falling like a rock?

    • @philipr.6090
      @philipr.6090 Місяць тому

      The wing stops producing lift, resulting in a STALL. It only becomes a SPIN if it's stalled AND a rotational force is present, and the pilot allows the situation to continue. If the pilot properly manages rudder during the stall, he can prevent the spin, or, even better, breaks the stall by reducing the wing's angle of attack while maintaining proper rudder control. Of course, all of that still doesn't tell us how the pilot managed to stall and spin a transport category aircraft.

    • @philipr.6090
      @philipr.6090 Місяць тому

      @@Tom-ok2rhFormer flight instructor here. Yes, all planes glide, even if all the engines fail. You simply have to lower the nose of the aircraft so that gravity will power it forward, allowing the wings to continue producing lift. Because you are descending you must, of course, find a place to land. In this case, for some reason, the plane entered a stall (which is loss of lift over the wings, not an engine event), and, during the stall, there was a rotational force present, which resulted in a spin. Now, some aircraft are approved for intentional spins, and can be recovered from them even after multiple rotations in a stabilized spin. However, many aircraft, such as airliners, can only be recovered if the spin is caught immediately, in its incipient stage. For some aircraft, once a spin goes past one turn or so, it becomes impossible to recover. The question here is how the pilots allowed the aircraft to stall and spin, and whether or not there were factors beyond their control.

    "According to aviation experts around the world who watched the videos showing the 89-foot plane spinning slowly as it plummeted before crashing almost directly on its belly the question of what had happened was simple to answer: The plane had stalled. In other words the plane’s wings had lost the lift needed to keep the aircraft aloft causing it to stop flying and start falling. “You can’t get into a spin without stalling,” said an airline pilot for 25 years who now aids plane crash investigations. “It’s A plus B equals C.”

    Someone posted a comment stating that _anyone who doesn't know what a SIGMET is doesn't belong on this thread_
    As a commercial pilot with several thousand flight hours and two aviation/aerospace university degrees, I was gobsmacked by this!
    People just watched videos made from multiple angles of a Part 25 transport category aircraft thundering into the ground during a common carrier flight full of non-pilot passengers after a complete departure from controlled flight.
    They understandably have questions and this is a reasonable place to ask them. Do we, as aviation professionals, believe the non-flying public should just look away, quietly continue to go about their business and leave the crashing to the pros?
    In this instance, if you *do know* what a SIGMET is but are unwilling to patiently share that expertise and knowledge with others, you don't belong on this thread.
